Amarillo Globe-News: How Did Gene Howe and the Globe-News Help Guide Amarillo, Texas through the Dust Bowl and Great Depression?Hasman, Gregory R. C. 05 1900 (has links)
For many years newspapers were locally owned by editors and publishers. However, today many are run by corporations from out of state. As a result, many communities have lost the personal relationship between the family owned publication and the community. Gene Howe, who served as editor, publisher and columnist of the Amarillo Globe-News from 1926 until his death in 1952, believed the community was where the focus should be and the newspaper should do all that it can to help their readers. Despite the fact that Howe was not born in Amarillo, Texas, his passion and love for the city and its inhabitants compensated for it. During the Dust Bowl and Great Depression Howe and the Globe-News helped Amarillo survive the dust and economic storms that blew through the Texas Panhandle, an area that has not been written as much as other parts of Texas. Through his “Tactless Texan” column, which served as a pulpit to the community, to the various contests and promotions the newspaper sprang up, including the creation of Mother in Law Day, Gene Howe gave the newspaper another dimension little has been studied about, the role of the editor and publisher in guiding a community through a dramatic era. Understanding Howe’s ethos can allow others to examine the roles editors and newspapers play in communities throughout the country.

Modelovanje i analiza fundamentalnih svojstava sumanena / Modeling and analysis of fundamental properties of sumaneneArmaković Stevan 16 October 2014 (has links)
</p><p>Potencijal sumanena, posebno u oblasti organske elektronike, dodatno ističu i rezultati ispitivanja uticaja spoljašnjeg električnog polja. Naime, dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da se specifična (posebno adsorpciona) svojstva sumanena mogu dodatno poboljšati primenom slabog, i eksperimentalno lako ostvarljivog, električnog polja, jer se intenzivira razdvajanje naelektrisanja.</p> / <p>Theoretical investigation of physicochemical properties of electron subsystem of sumanene molecule has been conducted in this doctoral work. Calculations are performed within DFT and TD-DFT with B3LYP functional and 6-31Gd, 6-31Gdp i 6-31++Gdp basis sets. For all calculations, on the mentioned level of theory, Gaussian03software package was used. Investigation encompassed: structural and optical (including nonlinear) properties of sumanene and its derivatives obtained by modification with boron and nitrogen atoms, aromatic and bowl to bowl inversion properties of sumanene and its derivatives, adsorption properties of sumanene towards H2, CO, CO2 i NH3 molecules and the influence of external electric field to the properties of sumanene.</p><p>According to obtained results, fundamental physicochemical properties of sumanene molecule could be efficiently and finely adjusted with the monosubstitution and disubstitution with hetero-atoms of boron and nitrogen. Bowl depth and bowl to bowl inversion barrier could be tuned in both directions. It was demonstrated that these two parameters are correlated, since bowl to bowl inversion barrier principally depends on the fourth power of bowl depth. Similar situation is with aromatic nature of sumanene rings, which change, depending on the number of introduced boron and nitrogen atoms, from aromatic through non-aromatic towards anti-aromatic nature. Thanks to mentioned modifications, optical properties are improved as well: absorption peaks in UV/Vis spectra shift towards visible area, while hyperpolarizabilities of sumanene and its derivative containing one boron atom are higher than hyperpolarizability of referent molecule of urea, respectively, 9 and 49 times. </p><p>Thanks to significant dipole moment due to the specific geometry, nvestigated adsorption properties of sumanene are very competitive to the other organic molecules such as carbon nanotubes and fullerene C60. Positive adsorption properties of sumanene towards H2 and CO molecules are distinguished. While the H2 molecule is important from the energetic aspects, specificity of CO molecules is that it can’t be adsorbed by carbon nanotubes.</p><p>Potential of sumanene, especially in the field of organic electronics, is emphasized through the obtained results related to the investigation of the influence of external electric field. Obtained results indicate that specific (especially adsorption) properties of sumanene could be additionally improved by application of weak, and experimentally easily achievable, external electric field, due to the higher charge separation. </p>

Reading the late JamesValihora, Karen January 1991 (has links)
This thesis examines the structures guiding and informing reading intrinsic to James's "late" style. It seeks to explore James's analogy between reading as an ethical activity and his own and his characters' acts of storytelling. It looks first at the necessities of reading as they are presented through the character of Isabel Archer in The Portrait of a Lady, to find that reading for James is itself a form of storytelling. James's concept of "revision," which replaces the concept of "re-writing," unites the activities of reading and storytelling because both activities, to be free, must be guided by the contingencies of experience. James's emphasis on the determinations of experience, which yields changing apprehensions of the same material, at once makes reading a test of the reader's resources in dealing with unexpected and complex situations, and storytelling an act of improvisation if it is to be faithful to the demands of its subject. The second half of the thesis examines Maggie Verver's command of storytelling in The Golden Bowl. It finds that ethical storytellers must have the same faith in their subject matter as ethical readers must have in the texts they engage. Finally, the thesis unites the study of reading with storytelling by examining the ways in which stories are exemplary performances whose the most significant subject is the audience. It is the forms of judgement that a work of art elicits which are essential to establishing alternative conceptions of the good and new modes of valuation in a community.

Winner Prediction of Blood Bowl 2 Matches with Binary ClassificationGustafsson, Andreas January 2019 (has links)
Being able to predict the outcome of a game is useful in many aspects. Such as,to aid designers in the process of understanding how the game is played by theplayers, as well as how to be able to balance the elements within the game aretwo of those aspects. If one could predict the outcome of games with certaintythe design process could possibly be evolved into more of an experiment basedapproach where one can observe cause and effect to some degree. It has previouslybeen shown that it is possible to predict outcomes of games to varying degrees ofsuccess. However, there is a lack of research which compares and evaluates severaldifferent models on the same domain with common aims. To narrow this identifiedgap an experiment is conducted to compare and analyze seven different classifierswithin the same domain. The classifiers are then ranked on accuracy against eachother with help of appropriate statistical methods. The classifiers compete onthe task of predicting which team will win or lose in a match of the game BloodBowl 2. For nuance three different datasets are made for the models to be trainedon. While the results vary between the models of the various datasets the general consensus has an identifiable pattern of rejections. The results also indicatea strong accuracy for Support Vector Machine and Logistic Regression across allthe datasets.

In Between the Dots and Dashes: Telegrams and the Mediation of Intimacy in The Golden BowlJemison, Sean 16 May 2014 (has links)
Using a poststructural and reader-response theoretical framework, the author explores competing ideas of interpretation, epistemology, and the problematic nature of truth and meaning in Henry James’s novel, The Golden Bowl. The author analyzes the ways in which emergent nineteenth century communication technologies, specifically how telegraphy both mediates and facilitates intimacy in a modern landscape. James anticipates modern forms of social media by exploring the nuances and the potential erotic nature of mediated communication and knowledge.

A Study of the Effects of Operational Time Variability in Assembly Lines with Linear Walking WorkersAmini Malaki, Afshin January 2012 (has links)
In the present fierce global competition, poor responsiveness, low flexibility to meet the uncertainty of demand, and the low efficiency of traditional assembly lines are adequate motives to persuade manufacturers to adopt highly flexible production tools such as cross-trained workers who move along the assembly line while carrying out their planned jobs at different stations [1]. Cross-trained workers can be applied in various models in assembly lines. A novel model which taken into consideration in many industries nowadays is called the linear walking worker assembly line and employs workers who travel along the line and fully assemble the product from beginning to end [2]. However, these flexible assembly lines consistently endure imbalance in their stations which causes a significant loss in the efficiency of the lines. The operational time variability is one of the main sources of this imbalance [3] and is the focus of this study which investigated the possibility of decreasing the mentioned loss by arranging workers with different variability in a special order in walking worker assembly lines. The problem motivation comes from the literature of unbalanced lines which is focused on bowl phenomenon. Hillier and Boling [4] indicated that unbalancing a line in a bowl shape could reach the optimal production rate and called it bowl phenomenon. This study chose a conceptual design proposed by a local automotive company as a case study and a discrete event simulation study as the research method to inspect the questions and hypotheses of this research. The results showed an improvement of about 2.4% in the throughput due to arranging workers in a specific order, which is significant compared to the fixed line one which had 1 to 2 percent improvement. In addition, analysis of the results concluded that having the most improvement requires grouping all low skill workers together. However, the pattern of imbalance is significantly effective in this improvement concerning validity and magnitude.
