Meu objetivo fundamental foi explicar a organização de grupos de escritores, por meio do caso deste grupo em especial, apontando para as variadas razões que levam indivíduos ligados à produção literária a escolherem seus vínculos, mas também explicar a complexa relação entre gerações literárias distintas / Abstract: This thesis focuses on a group of writers born in Rio Grande do Sul in the late 19th century whose careers were mostly constructed in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the first decades of the 20th century. The group was known as group from Misericórdia Square as it was formed in the homonymous square in Porto Alegre. I attempted to understand how the group constituted its own aesthetics in relationships established with contemporaneous writers and their predecessors: in this sense, the notion of generation grew in explanatory importance in the analysis. My fundamental objective was not only to explain the organization of groups of writers by considering this group in particular and pointing out several reasons why individuals acting in the literary production choose their links, but also to explain the complex relationship between different literary generations / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutora em História

[en] THE VOICE OF THE OTHER IN CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN CINEMA: THE PROBLEM WITH THE FIRST PERSON / [pt] A VOZ DO OUTRO NO CINEMA BRASILEIRO CONTEMPORÂNEO: A QUESTÃO DA PRIMEIRA PESSOAEDUARDO MIRANDA SILVA 29 October 2009 (has links)
primeira pessoa, neste início do século XXI.
[en] The goal of the dissertation is to investigate the construction of narratives in the
first person in contemporary Brazilian cinema, considering the criticisms made in the
1970’s against the Voice of Authority and the use of the third person, predominately
in Cinema Novo - the fruit of a period in which the arts traveled in consonance with a
collective and egalitarian project of the nation, confident in the importance of the role of
the artist to educate the people. Starting with the hypothesis that, in the post-Military
Dictatorship, between the autocracy of intellectual directors and the rise of Direct
Cinema, using the direct capture of image and sound, to analyze the consequences of
giving voice to other classes in current cinema. The rise of the first person in Brazilian
documentary, with emphasis on the interview, provides means to comprehend the
ethical debate that surrounded cinema in the first person, in the beginning of the 21st
century. In the selection of the dissertation the following films were chosen for
analysis: O homem que copiava (2003), by Jorge Furtado, Cidade de Deus (2002), by
Fernando Meirelles and Tropa de Elite (2007), by José Padilha.

The production and perception of English vowels by native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese living in Victoria, CanadaRomig, Silas 28 August 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the production and perception of ten English vowels (/i, ɪ, e, ɛ, æ, ʌ, ɑ, o, ʊ, u/) by native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) living in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The participants consisted of 14 native speakers of BP (divided into intermediate and advanced second language (L2) English proficiency groups), plus six native speakers of Canadian English (CE) as control participants. Four experiments were carried out: two pertaining to production and two pertaining to perception. The production tasks consisted of CE and BP wordlist reading tasks in order to measure the duration and first two formants of the participants’ vowels, while the perception tasks consisted of an identification task and an oddity-discrimination task. With regards to production, this thesis investigates how the participants’ productions of the L2 vowels differ between the experimental and control groups with respect to their formant frequencies and the Euclidean distances (EDs) between various English vowel pairs. Similarly, the participants’ perceptual abilities, as measured by their performance on the perception tests, are examined. Finally, the connection between perception and production is investigated. The findings indicate (a) a positive effect of proficiency, as the advanced participants showed a greater ability to both produce and perceive the L2 vowels, but that (b) participants of both proficiency levels have difficulty in contrasting certain English vowel pairs in a native-like fashion. Furthermore, the findings provide evidence of a connection between perception and production, and show that perception outperforms production, as predicted by the Speech Learning Model (Flege, 1995, 2005). Finally, the findings indicate a possible positive effect of environment (i.e., an English-speaking country) when compared to previous studies (Bion et al., 2006, Rauber, 2006). Pedagogical implications of these findings are also discussed. / Graduate

Land change dynamics in the Brazilian Cerrado: the interaction of biofuels, markets, and biodiversityGranco, Gabriel January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Geography / Marcellus M. Caldas / Biofuel ethanol has been proposed as the most viable solution to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the transportation sector; however, the impact of such production on the environment is not completely known. Environmental impacts are of more concern when ethanol production occurs in areas of high biodiversity value such as the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna). The Cerrado is a global biodiversity hotspot and an important breadbasket—at the same time, it is on a path to becoming the major sugarcane ethanol-producing region in Brazil. The main goal of this dissertation is to examine the impacts of sugarcane expansion on farmers’ land use decision processes in the Cerrado and to consider its consequences on biodiversity and the impacts of climate change.
In the following chapters, land change dynamics are investigated using a combination of theory and methods from geography, GIScience, economics, and ecology. Chapter 2 presents an examination of the drivers for the sugarcane expansion. The findings suggest that the Cerrado attracted mills because of the good agricultural conditions, affordable land prices, and favorable state-level fiscal incentive policies, while factors that have prevented traditional sugarcane-producing regions from meeting the increasing demand for ethanol. Chapter 3 develops a procedure to identify intensification and extensification responses at the field level. The main finding is that extensification is the main response. Additionally, this response has a higher probability of occurrence the farther an area is from a mill. Chapter 4 applies the partial adjustment framework to understand farmers’ land use decisions regarding sugarcane production. Estimates found that price of cattle have the largest cross-price elasticity with sugarcane acreage. In addition, the results suggest that acreage of sugarcane and soybean double-crop are positively correlated. Chapter 5 focuses on the impacts of climate change on land suitability for sugarcane and amphibian species. The findings show that land suitability for sugarcane is vulnerable to climate change and that the Brazilian zoning policy for sugarcane is not addressing this issue. Additionally, amphibians are affected by climate change and conflict with areas suitable for sugarcane in climate change scenarios.

Preposition Stranding in Heritage Speakers of Brazilian Portuguesede Lemos, Simone H 26 April 2013 (has links)
Influential bodies of work in language acquisition studies single out heritage bilingualism as a discrete acquisition process within the bilingualism continuum. In regards to the acquisition of WH-/QU- interrogatives containing prepositional phrases (PP), the present study examined whether heritage speakers (HS) of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) produce preposition stranding (P-stranding) constructions in their heritage language, in contrast to monolingual and adult speakers of BP, where prepositions are pied-piped to form the interrogative. Participants were HS of BP born in the USA and in Brazil, monolinguals, and late bilingual adults. The experiment consisted of an elicited production task and a grammaticality judgment task, both carried out in BP and then in English. Results showed that HS born in the USA use P-stranding in QU- interrogatives productively and systematically, in contrast to the other three groups. Moreover, no evidence of protracted acquisition was found in this group. No signs of attrition were detected among bilinguals.

Abstract: This research, that is part of the project "International Circulation and formation of Brazilian ruling classes" - FAPESP, was studied the trajectory of 14 brazilian grantees that, in the condition of temporary migrants, participated of a specialization in French institutions of academic excellency. The research was developed on the basis of questionnaires, interviews and analyses of "Currículo Lattes". In this research was possible to prove the meaning of the public agencies of promotion in the academic trajectory of each researcher. The objective was to understand the involvement of these grantees in projects of international cooperation and the possible implications in its world visions, as well as in the transformation of the possibilities of its professional careers in the national academic field. Two sources in the division of the groups of the interviewed ones were identified. The first source considered the position of the individuals in the dimension of the academic enrollment: the "youngest", students with continuous formation, searching for the establishment of a position in the academic field, aimed to reach a function of professor in a public university; and the "oldest", already acting in activities of education and research, were aiming for foreign specialization to obtain an international insertion and to establish scientific interchange; and to open new lines of research, aiming to the maintenance and improvement in the national academic field. The second source considered the mobilized dispositions for the grantees in the perfectioning of its academic trajectories and to surpass the difficulties to manage the daily situations in the other country. It was concluded that the process of international circulation implied in magnifying of the world vision, for both groups: either seeing the reality in new shapes, as well as to learn to dealing with the temporary relations and in the proficiency in the new language; in the possibilities in its professional careers: either in the formation of new social nets and a legitimacy in the national academic field as well as the experience in the international.

January 2013 (has links)
The main objective of the present dissertation is to analyze the relation between Primeiras estórias, by Guimarães Rosa and its translation into English entitled The third bank of the river and other stories, by Barbara Shelby. In order to do so, we have analyzed four narratives from Rosa's book - "A terceira margem do rio", "A menina de lá", "A benfazeja" and "Partida do audaz navegante" - and their respective translations into English. We started with the selection and study of three types of sentences, which, from what we could see, consist of one of the main characteristics of Rosa's poetic production and were carefully created in order to veil the metaphysic-religious theme that is so important in his books. In addition, we looked for the author's ideas of translation and literary production in the letters that he exchanged with his translators - Edoardo Bizzarri, Curt Meyer-Clason and Harriet de Onís - in order to have his own impressions of this subject, which contributed greatly to the analyses conducted. We noticed that these textual components - the sentences - are strategically inserted in key-points of the narratives and, if modified or omitted in the translation, can spoil the construction of the deepest meanings of these short-stories. Moreover, we carried out a study of the relationship between author, translator and editor, based on some correspondence we found at the Harry Ransom Center, in Austin - Texas. The analysis of these letters also enabled us to access other aspects, which may have influenced the translation process / Doutor

The Rehearsal Plan and the Preparation of Brazilian Art Songs: An Autoethnographic Study in Collaborative Pianoda Silva Gonçalves Santos, Elisama January 2020 (has links)
The objective of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of the rehearsal plan in the preparation of Brazilian art songs. This disquisition proposes a rehearsal plan model based on the concept of the class plan used in the field of education. The rehearsal plans were applied in a series of rehearsals with two singers at North Dakota State University in which we worked on four art songs composed by the Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone (1897-1986). This qualitative study adopted the autoethnography as research method. In this autoethnographic research I worked both as researcher and as pianist in the rehearsals. This disquisition relied upon two axes of theoretical framework, one musical and one educational: the musical axis was formed of studies regarding performance and preparation of art songs as developed by Katz (2009), Kimball (2006), Stein and Spillman (1996), Moore (1984), Bernac (1978), and Adler (1971). The educational axis was based on the studies of Libâneo (2006) and Coll, Pozo, Sarabia, and Valls (1998) and provided the concept, philosophical basis, structure, and applicability of the class plan. This educational axis also included studies supporting the effectiveness of the rehearsal plan in various musical contexts, such as Gorelick (2001), Brunner (1996), and Figueiredo (1990). The research data revealed that the rehearsal plan was an effective pedagogical tool in the preparation of Brazilian art songs. The rehearsal plans provided outlines of clear objectives and focused rehearsal strategies and facilitated the development and application of specific rehearsal strategies for art song performance preparation. The plans also promoted connectivity between rehearsals and a sense of accomplishment for the pianist and singers. In addition, the rehearsal plans detailed the preparation of Brazilian art songs with respect to three distinct dimensions of knowledge: conceptual, practical, and attitudinal.

THE ETHNIC WEB Socio-Spatial Characteristics of South Florida’s Brazilian CommunityUnknown Date (has links)
This thesis examines South Florida’s Brazilian community’ spatial organization in the region and its socio-cultural features in order to understand the nature of this immigrant community and the characteristics of its spatial structure. To do so, this study uses qualitative interviews with members of Brazilian community with the purpose of understanding how they make decisions of where to live, how they are connected to the broader community, how the community affects their individual experiences of living in the region and plan for the future. In addition, using secondary literature, it will compare the transformation of Brazilians ethnic community with that of the Cuban, Haitian and Russian communities located in South Florida. Situating this case within ongoing theoretical debates about immigrant incorporation in US cities, I will make the case that classical ethnic enclave or the spatial assimilation concept does not fit the spatial and social structure of Brazilian community.
The conclusion of this paper is that the US new immigrant ethnic groups may transform their shapes into a new multicultural ethnic web, as a result of the actual economic and social phenomena. The new ethnic web does not discard the disappearance of classical ethnic enclave, or the spatial assimilation processes, but given the actual international and local socio-economic processes, the three types of processes could overlap or be complementary. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (MA)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
