Resonances: Marcel Duchamp and the Comte de Lautréamont

Cushing, Douglas Clifton 12 September 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between Marcel Duchamp’s oeuvre and the texts of the Comte de Lautréamont, arguing that the author’s works comprise an overlooked and undervalued source of interest and ideas for the artist. Scholars have done an extraordinary job of documenting and analyzing a number of Duchamp’s literary sources and inspirations. Their work has elucidated the roles of Raymond Roussel, Alfred Jarry, Stéphane Mallarmé, Jules Laforgue, and Jean-Pierre Brisset, among others, for Duchamp. The work of Lautréamont, however, has received proportionally little attention, despite several indications of its importance for the artist. Among the few who have proposed such a connection, none have yet offered a broadly documented or sustained argument. Other historians, generally working under the premise that Lautréamont only came to Duchamp’s attention by way of the Surrealists, have explicitly rejected the possibility that the Uruguayan-French poet had any meaningful position in Duchamp’s library prior to the Surrealist championing of the author. This thesis proposes otherwise, making the case that Lautréamont was more fundamentally important to Duchamp than yet realized. Historical documents as well as statements by the artist himself and those closest to him suggest a stronger engagement by Duchamp with the works of Lautréamont than has been previously proposed. This relationship seems to have begun by as early as 1912, well in advance of the Surrealists’ discovery of the author, and it lasted throughout Duchamp’s life. Furthermore, an examination of Duchamp’s body of work demonstrates a number of strategic and thematic resonances between artist and author that reinforce what the archival evidence suggests. These resonances should be understood as open readings, rather than exclusive readings. They are proposed as additions to the existing constellation of understanding of Duchamp’s oeuvre, rather than as foreclosures upon other ways of reading Duchamp’s body of work. / text

Determinants of Foreign Bride's Scale in Taiwan

Unknown Date (has links)
In recent years, foreign bride has become a new issue, and there are more and more families with foreign brides in Taiwan. This study adopts fixed-effect model to investigate the determinants of foreign bride’s scale in Taiwan with 23 regions’ panel data during the period of 2001-2005. The result shows the phenomenon of foreign bride is general in Taiwan society. In addition, wage and unemployment rate are the most important factors to affect foreign bride’s scale in Taiwan. Wage reflects the living standard, and most families with foreign brides in Taiwan are bottom feeders. Furthermore, unemployment rage has a negative relationship to foreign bride’s scale in Taiwan, and the amount of foreign bride has a decreasing trend. Finally, in order to reduce the mistakes occurred in positive models and enable the study more rigorous, then uses more methods to the models and the result.

Cattle Rustling and Its Effects among Three Communities (Dinka, Murle and Nuer) in Jonglei State, South Sudan

Manyok, Phillip T. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Inter-tribal clashes have emerged to be one of the biggest contributors to rampant insecurity witnessed in South Sudan and in Jonglei state the clashes revolve around cattle rustling. Efforts to quell the violence from government, the international community, religious movements, and other South Sudan national organizations have not yielded significant fruit yet. This qualitative case study research explores the underlying manifestation of the conflicts among three communities Nuer, Murle and Dinka, who live in Jonglei. The main objective was to explore the changing context of cattle rustling and understand the effects of conflicts related to cattle raiding in Jonglei. The approach of the dissertation is unique in that it examines both historical and current trends in cattle rustling to create a better understanding of the conflict situation. The dissertation focuses on Jonglei state because it has produced the highest number of conflicts related to cattle raiding.

Le désir érotique dans l’œuvre d’Alexandre Papadiamantis / The Erotic desire in the the Work of Alexandros Papadiamantis

Evzonas, Nicolas 14 January 2012 (has links)
Viewed for ages as an anaphrodite and « castrated » saint before being recognized as the most sensual writer in modern Greek literature, Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911), prolific author of approximately one hundred and eighty short stories, and three historical novels, and deemed to be a Hellenic national treasure, is an antinomic artist who keeps intriguing critics and arousing open debates. The present thesis offers a reading of his complete work based on a controversial subject of which no systematic study has been undertaken before, despite a century of numerous literary comments : erotic desire, defined as the connexion with an objet of lust explicitely or implicitely defined as such, human or inhuman, alive or inanimated, and which rises a number of physical and/or psychological reactions, a complex network of meanings, sensations, meditations, actions and fantasies represented through words. This definition emphasizes the interweaving of drive and language and discerns between desire and love, the latter being rather a stasis of desire, and a fixation on the « other ». Our goal is to understand how eroticism thus defined is expressed throughout the texts, to point out the psychological issues associated with it, its interconnections with the narrative techniques, stylistic choices and linguistic particularities and the literary transformations it undergoes throughout the Papadiamantian opus, that is to say its mythic destiny, its ideological culmination and its thematic apotheosis, in short its outcome in writing.

Diálogos estéticos entre Alphonsus de Guimaraens e Georges Rodenbach / Poetics beyond life: dead city and dead bride. Aesthetic dialogues between Alphonsus de Guimaraens and Georges Rodenbach

Leão, Nadia Cotrim Sauer 14 March 2016 (has links)
The dissertation brings an approximation between the Symbolist poets Alphonsus de Guimaraens and Georges Rodenbach through the analysis of the themes of the dead city and the dead bride. Initially, a panoramic reading of the works in verse and prose of the Brazilian poet is done, in which a discussion concerning religiousness in his work is pointed out with the intention of showing that the presence of such theme serves a conscious aesthetic project and contributes with the creation of a mysterious atmosphere, which appears both in the dead cities and in the devotion to the dead loved one, just like it happens in the novel Bruges-la-morte. In this novel by Georges Rodenbach, the dead city appears as a kind of mystical entity and its image mixes with that of the dead bride, in a mirroring game. Based mainly on Starobinskis concept of mirroring, this study was able to evidence the perception of the cities as states of mind and the image of the dead bride as a consequence of such psychic condition in the works of Guimaraens and Rodenbach. These proximities between the works of both authors is evidence of how Guimaraens could have appropriated themes from the works of Rodenbach, of whom he was a reader. That leaves open the possibility that certain themes known in the works of Guimaraens, which are usually associated with his personal life, may have come from the influence he suffered from the European poetry of his time.

The multicultural traveller : representations of Indian female identity in Gurinder Chadha's Bend it like Beckham and Bride and prejudice.

January 2009 (has links)
This paper explores the construction of multicultural identities in the postcolonial world in relation to nonresident Indian women depicted in mainstream cinema. The dissertation traces the distorted representation of Indian women from its colonial and diasporic origins to its contemporary neo-colonial evolution. The analysis of two films, directed by Gurinder Chadha, Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and Bride and Prejudice (2004), speaks back to Indian women‟s agency and ownership of multicultural identities. These film texts were chosen as they are both contemporary examples of Indian class, gender and culture in relation to the postmodern concept of multicultural societies. The films are products of formerly colonised people commenting on issues of class, gender and power as seen in Indian diasporic communities in England and the USA. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2009.

Grandjean, Julien 29 October 2013 (has links)
The performance of a mechanism is closely correlated with the accuracy of the surfaces that make up the mechanical joint. The most common approach used to study these surfaces is based on strong assumptions about their behavior. Form errors and roughness are neglected and the surfaces are assumed infinitely rigid. The main objective of this work is to develop an original approach to study the impact of form errors on the assemblies. It is mainly based on a methodology and associated tools to predict which defects will optimize or penalize the functional requirements of the assembly. In this manuscript, two case studies are proposed. In a first step, a plate flange (ball and cylinder joints added to a planar joint) is designed to validate the overall approach. Modal decomposition of defects, sum-surface concept, the determination of a stable contact area and quantification of contact deformation of surfaces correspond to the main theoretical tools used in this framework. The influence of form errors on the positioning accuracy is quantified by a clearance domain. Comparisons between theoretical approach and experimental setup are used to validate the models. Subsequently, a spherical joint is considered corresponding to a total hip implant with ceramic material. The objective of this study is to identify which type of form errors can impact the appearance of the squeaking phenomena. The same procedure is followed as for the first example. In parallel, several experimental devices are designed to validate the relevance of this approach. Specific measurements provide some key elements to understand the behavior of the implant subject to squeaking. This work is part of a collaboration between three laboratories : SYMME Annecy, I2M-IMC Bordeaux, and Tural company located in Marignier (74), an industrial research laboratory working on medical implants.

Mezi historiií a současností. Vybrané prózy Jurije Bujdy / Between history and present. Selected prose of Yury Buida

Zhabska, Kseniia January 2020 (has links)
(anglicky) The goal of my diploma thesis is to analyze Yury Buida`s prose mainly focusing on his cycle Prussian Bride, in which I will be looking for the elements typical for magical realism literature. Another question I will be exploring in this work is going to be a reflection of a historical memory of Kaliningrad Oblast inhabitants. I will be working with the works about magical realism including the one about the magical realism in Yury Buida`s work specifically, as well as with a selection of materials about historical and traumatic collective memory. The contribution of this work will be in a form of Yury Buida`s work analysis (which has not been properly studied until now) and its` representation in a context of a modern European literature studies. Key words: cycle, magical realism, memory, trauma, Yury Buida, Russian Literature of the 20th century
