1	The Dissemination of Ideologies: Tom Brown’s School Days and the Harry Potter Series as Moral and Social Pedagogy Carmichael, V. A. 03 January 2020 (has links) This thesis compares J. K. Rowling’s contemporary Harry Potter series (1997-2007) with Thomas Hughes’s Victorian school story, Tom Brown’s School Days (1857), in order to identify how Rowling and Hughes use British public school literature as a means for the widespread dissemination of moral pedagogy. Given the disparate time frames and political outlooks, Rowling and Hughes teach dissimilar ideologies in different socio-historical contexts. However, both stories reveal the necessity of the schoolmaster’s teaching methods to form morally responsible school leaders, demonstrate the titular character ‘chosen’ as a moral leader, and exemplify the use of organized sports as a method of moral and social instruction. In sum, my thesis presents a comparison of the narratives by Rowling and Hughes as an acknowledgement of the continuing influence of Hughes’s work on modern literature and the employment of children’s literature for the advancement of moral and socio-ideological themes. First of all, the existence of universal k-fold branched coverings over CW-complexes with stratified branch set is proved using Brown's Representability Theorem. 3	An investigation of primary school children's clay modelling techniques Grace, Tim, n/a January 1993 (has links) Children in their final years of primary schooling tend to emphasize the use of detail and the production of naturalistic representations, when modelling the human figure with clay. Children of this age rarely construct clay figures which are noted for their dynamic quality in terms of finish, proportion, or pose. This study examined the effect of using a "formative" modelling technique on the clay models made by 11 year old children. Involved in the study were two groups of 11 year old children. Both groups of children undertook a pre-test, a post-test, and a series of clay modelling activities similar to other activities described in most primary school art curricula. The experimental group of children were instructed in the use of a "formative" modelling technique in which children develop their clay figures from a single mass of clay and refrain from constructing the figures by a combination of separate parts. The control group received no instruction. Brown's Modified "Secondary" Characteristics Rating Scale was used to identify differences between pre- and post-test clay figures. Results suggest that the "formative" modelling technique did not induce a different approach to the modelling of finish, proportion, and pose in the clay figures made by boys and girls 11 years of age. 5	Connecting "Ray Brown's Bass Method" (1963) to "We Get Requests" (1964): A Comparative Analysis Hitt, Eric 07 1900 (has links) This research serves two main purposes: to create an analyzed edition of Ray Brown's bass lines from the Oscar Peterson Trio's 1964 recording We Get Requests, and to better understand Brown's lines through the lens of Ray Brown's Bass Method. This comparative analysis identifies significant events in the recorded music that closely relate to or resemble exercises from the book. By analyzing the music from the lens of Ray Brown's Bass Method, performers, students, and educators will gain a stronger understanding of the application of select technical devices provided by Brown in his book. The most prominent techniques discussed include scales and intervals, major triads, minor triads, and chords, exercises in tenths, rhythm patterns with drops, and diminished patterns. These evidence-based conclusions have significant applications in jazz bass pedagogy by revealing potential relationships between technical ideals and practical use. 6	AFRICAN AMERICAN SPIRITUALS AND THE BIBLE: SELECTING TEXTS FOR SECONDARY EDUCATION INSTRUCTION Michael James Greenan (9719168) 15 December 2020 (has links) <p>The research in this thesis attempts to select texts from the African American Spirituals and the Bible that are appropriate for secondary language arts instruction, specifically for grades 9-12. The paper first gives an overview of legal justifications and educational reasons for teaching religious literature in public schools. Then, relevant educational standards are discussed, and, using the standards as an initial guide, I identify common themes within the Spirituals and Bible, which, from my analysis of various literatures, are slavery, chosenness, and coded language. Next, I describe my systematic effort to choose texts from the Spirituals and the Bible. To help accomplish this, I draw primarily from two tomes: <i>Go Down Moses: Celebrating the African-American Spiritual</i> and <i>Biblical Literacy: The Essential Bible Stories Everyone Needs to Know</i>.
