The challenges faced by women-owned small businesses in Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Thesis (MBA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / In today‟s post-modern era, the role of women-owned small businesses in economic development is inevitable. Women are willing to act in business and contribute to the nation‟s growth. However, most women in small businesses face a wide variety of challenges both in starting and in growing their business ventures. Some of the challenges relate to lack of skills and an environment that is not favourable to women small business owners. Thus, a study was conducted in Lepelle-Nkumpi local municipality in Limpopo Province. The aim of the study was to investigate the challenges faced by women-owned small businesses in the Lepelle-Nkumpi local municipality, Limpopo Province of South Africa. The study used a qualitative research method to collect data. Fifteen (15) individuals participated in the study; twelve (12) of the participants were women who owned small businesses in the municipality and three (3) of the participants were officials working in the LED unit. Participants in the study were chosen purposively because of the knowledge that they possessed. Semistructured interviews were used in the qualitative study to collect data. The study discovered that some of the challenges included lack of skills and training, lack of access to finance, lack of marketing strategies and inadequate resources. Thus, the study recommended that the municipality should provide need-based training for small business owners.

The Role of Intangible Human Factors in Business Success in South Asian Ethnic Minority Small Businesses

Extant scholarship has paid considerable attention to exploring the impact of people-dependent intangible resources on business success but in large organisations only. Research about the role of these resources in small businesses, in general, and in ethnic minority small businesses, in particular, is scarce. The current study attempts to narrow this gap. Since it is impossible to study all the ethnic minority small businesses, this study uses a case study strategy that focuses on South Asian ethnic minority small businesses that deal in fashion. The study adopts a qualitative research methodology, it uses the semi-structured in-depth interview method to collect data, and it espouses an inductive thematic technique for coding/analysis of the data. Five overarching themes emerged from the interview data. These are: business success; compassionate customer service; relationships; knowledge, experience, training and education; and ethnic culture and the wider economic and political environment. Discussion of these themes leads to the formation of the culture-induced entrepreneurship model. According to this model, the continued success of these businesses is driven by the ethnic culture, while the existence of these businesses helps to maintain the culture in return. However, overdependence on the coethnic base might risk the future success of these businesses. This thesis concludes by highlighting its theoretical contributions to the culturalist view and the mixed embeddedness model of ethnic minority entrepreneurship and small business literature. The implications of this study for researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers, as well as its limitations and the possible future research paths, are also discussed.

El objetivo general de la presente investigación fue conocer las características que explican la continuidad de una empresa familiar del rubro molinero, Lambayeque 2022; la metodología que se aplicó fue de tipo transversal, enfoque cualitativo, nivel exploratorio y diseño fenomenológico. Se utilizó la entrevista en profundidad abierta hasta la saturación, dirigida a seis miembros de los órganos de gobierno con un rango de edad de 51 años hasta los 60 años y tres expertos en el rubro de empresas familiares con un rango de edad de 42 a 50 años de edad, con 24 años de experiencia en las principales empresas familiares de la región. Los resultados mostraron que la unión familiar, el emprendimiento, la creación y sostenimiento de la marca a través de la calidad del producto y el desarrollo comercial, son los pilares de la organización. Se llegó a la conclusión que lo que ha llevado a que la empresa familiar tenga continuidad en el tiempo, es la profesionalización de sus gerencias y el acompañamiento a los órganos de gobierno en la toma de decisiones. / The general objective of the present investigation was to know the characteristics that explain the continuity of a family business in the milling industry, Lambayeque 2022; The methodology that was applied was of a cross-sectional type, qualitative approach, exploratory level and phenomenological design. The in-depth interview open to saturation was used, addressed to six members of government bodies with an age range of 51 to 60 years and three experts in the field of family businesses with an age range of 42 to 50. years old, with 24 years of experience in the main family businesses in the region. The results showed that family unity, entrepreneurship, the creation and maintenance of the brand through product quality and commercial development, are the pillars of the organization. It was concluded that what has led to the family business has continuity over time, is the professionalization of its management and the accompaniment of government bodies in decision-making.

An investigation of selected factors influencing the success of small and medium-sized family businesses / Francois de Waal van Breda

Family businesses have unique dynamics and success stories but at the same time face unique challenges. Intergenerational small and medium-sized family businesses in South Africa play an increasingly important role in creating jobs together with wealth distribution. This study attempts to explore the complicated relationship and inimitable characteristics of family business surroundings against the added challenges of family business perceived success and family business continuity. Notwithstanding family businesses being a prevalent phenomenon in the economies of most countries, insight into this form of enterprise is still limited. Topics such as commitment, entrepreneurial orientation, job satisfaction, satisfaction with life and perceived success of the family business, among others, were investigated. In order to achieve the primary objective of this study, a survey was undertaken using a structured questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined by calculating the Cronbach alpha coefficient, which indicated that the questionnaire used in this study conformed to the criteria of acceptable reliability and can be regarded as internally consistent. The survey yielded 143 usable questionnaires from 42 family businesses restricted to Gauteng province and the North West province in South Africa. The nature of this study was investigative and descriptive statistics was therefore used to analyse the statements of all the participating respondents. The selected determinants influencing the perceived success of small and medium-sized family business was then measured and regressional analyses were further conducted. Conclusions were drawn from this study on the outcomes of the selected factors influencing the perceived success of small and medium-sized family business. Finally, a critical evaluation was done and practical recommendations are suggested to improve family business wellness and, subsequently, increase the sustainability of such business. / MBA, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Management succession and succession planning is very important and it has a significant impact on family members, society and the business and economic sectors. This research study was conducted by means of a literature and empirical study. The aim of the literature studies was to gain insight into family businesses and the importance of succession planning. Topics covered in the literature study on family businesses includes a definition of family businesses, family business success, uniqueness of family businesses, characteristics of successful family businesses, advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, challenges facing family businesses. Topics covered in the literature study on succession planning includes a definition of succession, the importance of succession in family businesses, factors that influence succession, succession planning, selecting and choosing a successor as well as mentoring and preparation of the successor(s). The study was concluded on the basis of the findings of the empirical study, that the aspects that needs more attention to help with successful succession planning in family businesses in the Sedibeng district of the Gauteng province in South Africa, are the relationship between owner-manager and successor(s), willingness of the successor(s) to take over the business, willingness of the successor(s) to hand over the business and the preparation level of the successor(s). Challenges Facing Food Processing MSEs in Tanzania : A Qualitative Case Study of the Sunflower Oil Industry in Babati, Manyara

Food processing micro- and small-scale enterprises (MSEs) play an important role in the national economic development of Tanzania. Though many of them have great growth potential, they face a number of constraints hindering further development, and large amounts of cooking oil are imported each year. The aim of thesis has therefore been to identify and analyse the different factors affecting these MSEs in order to find out which the major growth challenges are. The case study is mainly based on individual semi-structured interviews with sunflower oil processors and farmers in Babati districts, conducted in February and March 2016, and earlier research and studies on the topic of MSE growth make up the theoretical framework used for analysis of the data. The findings show that there are indeed numerous challenges facing these processors, and the major constraint was found to be lack of capital; an issue causing or worsening a majority of the other challenges at hand. Other problems are related to raw material, equipment & electricity for processing, regulations, market accessibility, and competition. These obstacles need to be overcome in order to enable the industry's expansion within and outside of Tanzania, and further research is recommended.

As German organisations expand their businesses into China, the potential risks associated with a lack of fit in management styles among International Joint Venture (IJV) partner-firms have become increasingly obvious to academic researchers, human resource professionals and partner-firm managers themselves. The general consensus among researchers and practitioners is that cultural differences in management styles are a major deterrent to the success of IJVs. Limited research has been undertaken to specifically examine and identify how partner-firm managers can overcome this barrier in Sino-German IJVs.
