High-Quality Detection in Heavy-Traffic Avionic Communication System Using Interference Cancellation Techniques

This dissertation focuses on quantifying the effects of multi-user co-channel interference for an avionic communication system operating in a heavy-traffic aeronautical mobile environment and proposes advanced interference cancellation techniques to mitigate the interference. The dissertation consists of two parts. The first part of the work investigates the use of a visualization method to quantify and characterize the multi-user co-channel interference (multiple access interference) effects impinging on an avionic communication system. The interference is caused by complex interactions of thousands of RF signals transmitted from thousands of aircraft; each attempts to access a common communication channel, which is governed by a specific channel contention access protocol. The visualization method transforms the co-channel interference, which is specified in terms of signal-overlaps (signal collisions), from a visual representation to a matrix representation for further statistical analysis. It is found that the statistical Poisson and its cumulative distribution provide the best estimates of multi-user co-channel interference. It is shown, using Monte Carlo simulation, that the co-channel interference of a victim aircraft operating in the heavy-traffic environment could result in as high as eight signal-overlaps. This constitutes to approximately 83.4% of success rate in signal detection for the entire three thousand aircraft environment using conventional FSK receiver. One key finding shows that high-quality communications, up to 98.5% success rate, is achievable if only three overlapping signals can be decoded successfully. The interference results found in the first part set the stage for interference cancellation research in the second part. The second part of the work proposes the use of advanced interference cancellation techniques, namely sequential interference cancellation (SIC) and parallel interference cancellation (PIC), as potential solutions to mitigating the interference effects. These techniques can be implemented in radio receivers to perform multi-signal decoding functionality to remove the required interferers (three overlapping signals) so that high-quality communication, as described in the first part, can be achieved. Various performance graphs are shown for B-FSK and B-PSK for both SIC and PIC techniques. One key finding is that the system performance can be improved substantially to an additional 15% in signal reception success rate by using SIC or PIC. This means that critical information transmitted from 450 aircraft (out of approximately three thousand aircraft in the environment) is preserved and successfully decoded. Multi-signal decoding using these interference cancellation receivers comes at a small penalty of 2 - 4.5 dBs in Eb/No when sufficient signal-to-interference (SIR) ratio (7-12 dB) is provided. / Ph. Filter Design for Interference Cancellation for Wide and Narrow Band RF Systems

In radio frequency (RF), filtering is an essential part of RF transceivers. They are employed for different purposes of band selection, channel selection, interference cancellation, image rejection, etc. These are all translated in selecting the wanted signal while mitigating the rest. This can be performed by either selecting the desired frequency range by a band pass filter or rejecting the unwanted part by a band stop filter. Although there has been tremendous effort to design RF tunable filters, there is still lack of designs with frequency and bandwidth software-tuning capability at frequencies above 4 GHz. This prevents the implementation of Software Defined Radios (SDR) where software tuning is a critical part in supporting multiple standards and frequency bands. Designing a tunable integrated filter will not only assist in realization of SDR, but it also causes an enormous shrinkage in the size of the circuit by replacing the current bulky off-chip filters. The main purpose of this research is to design integrated band pass and band stop filters aimed to perform interference cancellation. In order to do so, two systems are proposed for this thesis. The first system is a band pass filter capable of frequency and band with tuning for C band frequency range (4-8 GHz) and is implemented in 0.13 µm BiCMOS technology. Frequency tunability is accomplished by using a variable capacitor (varactor) and bandwidth tuning is carried out by employing a negative transconductance cell to compensate for the loss of the elements. Additional circuitry is added to the band pass filter to enhance the selectivity of the filter. The second system is a band stop filter (notch) with the same capability as the band pass filter in terms of tuning. This system is implemented in C band, similar to its band stop counterpart and is capable of tuning its depth by using a negative transconductance in an LC tank. A negative feedback is added to the circuit to improve the bandwidth. While implemented in the same process as the band pass filter, it only employs CMOS transistors since it is generally more attractive due to its lower cost and scalability. Both of the systems mentioned use a varactor for changing the center frequency which is a nonlinear element. Therefore, the nonlinearity of it is modelled using two different methods of nonlinear feedback and Volterra series in order to gain further understanding of the nonlinear process taking place in the LC tank. After the validation of the models proposed using Cadence Virtuoso simulator, two methods of design and tuning are suggested to improve the linearity of the system. After post layout-extraction, the band pass filter is capable of Q tuning in the range of 3 to 270 and higher. With the noise figure of 10 to 14 dB and input 1-dB compression point as high as 2 dBm, the system shows a reasonably good performance along its operating frequency of 4 to 8 GHz. The band stop filter which is designed in the same frequency band can achieve better than 55 dB of rejection with the noise figure of 6.7 to 8.8 dB and 1-dB compression point of -4 dBm. With the power consumption of 39 to 70 mW, the band stop filter can be used in a low power receiver to suppress unwanted signals. The technique used in the band stop filter can be applied to higher frequency ranges if the circuit is implemented in a more advanced silicon technology. Implementing the mentioned filters in a receiver along with other elements of low noise amplifiers, mixers, etc. would be a major step toward full implementation of SDR systems. Studying the linearity theory of varactors would help future designers identify the sources of nonlinearity and suggest more efficient tuning techniques to improve the linearity of RF electronic systems. / Master of Science

Distortion Cancellation in Time Interleaved ADCs

Time-Interleaved Analog to Digital Converters (TI ADC) consist of several individual sub-converters operating at a lower sampling rate, working in parallel, and in a circular loop. Thereby, they are increasing the sampling rate without compromising on the resolution during conversion, at high sampling rates. The latter is the main requirement in the area of radio frequency sampling. However, they suffer from mismatches caused by the different characteristics in each sub-converter and the TI structure. The output of the TI ADC under consideration contains a lot of harmonics and spurious tones due to the non-linearities mismatch between the sub-converters. Therefore, previously extensive frequency planning was performed to avoid the input signal from coinciding with these harmonic bins. More importance has been given to digital calibration in recent years where algorithms are developed and implemented outside ADC in a Digital signal processor (DSP), whereas the compensation is done in real time. In this work, we model the distortions and the harmonics present in the TI ADC output to get a clear understanding of the TI ADC. A post-correction block is developed for the cancellation of the characterized harmonics. The suggested method is tested on the TI ADCs working at radio frequencies, but is valid also for other types of ADCs, such as pipeline ADCs and sigma-delta ADCs.

A Modular Scheme to Detect and Combat Sinusoidal Variation in Fading Channels

The bit error rate (BER) performance of the communication system is affected by how closely the assumptions made in de- signing the estimation technique match the deployment environment. Any unforeseen disturbances or hindrances in the environment deteriorate the BER performance of the system when the estimation system is not designed to combat the same. To combat such obstacles, estimation techniques must either be reinforced with modular systems which combat such observed types of disturbances, or be redesigned as a whole considering such observations of disturbances. In this paper a modular scheme to detect and combat sinusoidal variation in fading power is developed and tested by employing the developed scheme in a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system which adopts Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) techniques.

本研究主要探討公司進行現金增資之決策是否受到市場對公司的股價反 應與公司本身財務彈性所影響。本研究以 1980 年至 2015 年間,美國證券 市場 328 家撤銷現金增資的公司與 11,754 家完成現金增資的公司為樣本, 並進一步探討撤銷現金增資之決策影響因素。實證結果顯示,當市場於現 金增資宣告日給予負向反應時,公司傾向撤銷現金增資。該結果證實公司 會運用其市場擇時能力以進行現金增資之決策。本研究亦針對撤銷現金增 資之決策影響因素進行探討,發現股價現金增資反應較差、成長機會較低 或獲利能力越好的公司會傾向撤銷現金增資。此外,本研究發現當公司因 宣告現金增資而引起股價下跌時,財務彈性較佳的公司將傾向撤銷現金增 資。然而,財務彈性不佳的公司則不受市場狀況所影響,並傾向完成現金 增資。因此,公司除了將市場情形納入現金增資決策外,在市場狀況不佳 時更特別注重公司是否持有足夠的現金以保持財務彈性。 / The main purpose of this study is to examine whether the interaction between market reaction to the announcement and financial flexibility of seasoned equity offering (SEO) will affect the decision of SEO cancellation. This study includes 328 canceled SEOs and 11,754 completed SEOs in U.S. market from 1980 to 2015 and conducts a comprehensive analysis on the decision of SEO cancellation. We find that, consistent with market timing theory, SEO firms tend to cancel their equity offerings if the market reaction to those SEOs are negative. We further investigate determinants of the decision of SEO cancellation. We find that SEO cancellation is negatively associated with stock price reaction and the growth opportunity, and positively associated with the profitability. In addition, we show the evidence that the association between SEO cancellation decision and the market condition depends on the level of financial flexibility for SEO firms. Specifically, we find that firms with more financial flexibility tend to cancel SEOs if their stock prices experience a large decline around the filing date, while firms with less financial flexibility will complete equity issuance regardless of the market conditions.

On the Enhancement of Audio and Video in Mobile Equipment

Use of mobile equipment has increased exponentially over the last decade. As use becomes more widespread so too does the demand for new functionalities. The limited memory and computational power of many mobile devices has proven to be a challenge resulting in many innovative solutions and a number of new standards. Despite this, there is often a requirement for additional enhancement to improve quality. The focus of this thesis work has been to perform enhancement within two different areas; audio or speech encoding and video encoding/decoding. The audio enhancement section of this thesis addresses the well known problem in the GSM system with an interfering signal generated by the switching nature of TDMA cellular telephony. Two different solutions are given to suppress such interference internally in the mobile handset. The first method involves the use of subtractive noise cancellation employing correlators, the second uses a structure of IIR noth filters. Both solutions use control algorithms based on the state of the communication between the mobile handset and the base station. The video section of this thesis presents two post-filters and one pre-filter. The two post-filters are designed to improve visual quality of highly compressed video streams from standard, block-based video codecs by combating both blocking and ringing artifacts. The second post-filter also performs sharpening. The pre-filter is designed to increase the coding efficiency of a standard block based video codec. By introducing a pre-processing algorithm before the encoder, the amount of camera disturbance and the complexity of the sequence can be decreased, thereby increasing coding efficiency.

Nonlinear Acoustic Echo Cancellation for Mobile Phones: A Practical Approach

<p>Acoustic echo cancelation (AEC) composes a fundamental property of speech processing to enable a pleasant telecommunication conversation. Without this property of the telephone the communicator would hear an annoying echo of his own voice along with the speech from the other communicator. This would make a conversation through any telecommunication device an unpleasant experience.</p><p>AEC has been subject of interest since 1950s in the telecom industry and very efficient solutions were devised to cancel linear echo. With the advent of low cost hands free communication devices the issue of non linear echo became prominent because these devices use cheap loudspeakers that produce artifacts in addition to the desired sound which will cause non linear echo that cannot be cancelled by linear echo cancellers.</p><p>In this thesis a Harmonic Distortion Residual Echo Cancelation algorithm has been chosen for further investigations (HDRES). HDRES has many of those features that are desirable for an algorithm which is dealing with nonlinear acoustic echo cancelation, such as low computational complexity and fast convergence. The algorithm was first implemented in Matlab where it was tested and modified. The final result of the modified algorithm was then implemented in C and integrated with a complete AEC system. Before the implementation a number of measurements were done to distinguish the nonlinearities that were cause by the mobile phone loudspeaker. The measurements were performed on three different mobile pones which were documented to have problems with nonlinear acoustic echo.</p><p>The result of this thesis has shown that it might be possible to use an adaptive filter, which has both low complexity and fast convergence, in an operating AEC system. However, the request for such a system to work would be that a doubletalk detector is implemented along with the adaptive algorithm. That way the doubletalk situation could be found and the adaptation of the algorithm could be stopped. Thus, the major part of the speech would be saved.</p>

Investigation of Control Approaches for a High Precision, Piezo-Actuated Rotational Stage

The Equipment Controls and Electronics section (EN-STI-ECE) at CERN is developing a high precision piezo-actuated rotational stage for the UA9 crystal collimation project. This collaboration is investigating how tiny bent crystals can help to steer particle beams used in modern hadron colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Particles are deflected by following the crystal planar channels, "channeling" through the crystal. For high energy particles the angular acceptance for channeling is very low, demanding for a high angular precision mechanism, i.e. the rotational stage. Several control-related issues arising from the complexity and operational environment of the system make it difficult to design a controller that achieves the desired performance. This thesis investigates different control approaches that could be used to improve the tracking capability of the rotational stage. It shows that the IRC method could be used to efficiently control the rotational stage. Moreover it shows that a harmonic cancellation method could be used to increase the tracking accuracy by canceling known harmonic disturbances. The harmonic cancellation method (the RFDC) was implemented in this thesis and proposed as an add-on to the present control algorithm.

A Lexicographic Product Cancellation Property for Digraphs

There are four prominent product graphs in graph theory: Cartesian, strong, direct, and lexicographic. Of these four product graphs, the lexicographic product graph is the least studied. Lexicographic products are not commutative but still have some interesting properties. This paper begins with basic definitions of graph theory, including the definition of a graph, that are needed to understand theorems and proofs that come later. The paper then discusses the lexicographic product of digraphs, denoted $G \circ H$, for some digraphs $G$ and $H$. The paper concludes by proving a cancellation property for the lexicographic product of digraphs $G$, $H$, $A$, and $B$: if $G \circ H \cong A \circ B$ and $|V(G)| = |V(A)|$, then $G \cong A$. It also proves additional cancellation properties for lexicographic product digraphs and the author hopes the final result will provide further insight into tournaments.

In addition, we characterize all solutions X to G\times C\cong X\times C for bipartite G. A characterization of non-bipartite cancellation graphs is yet to be found. We present some examples of solutions X to G\times C\cong X\times C for non-bipartite G, an example of a non-bipartite cancellation graph, and a conjecture regarding non-bipartite cancellation graphs.
