Grasel, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
We investigated the relationships between tree component diversity and structure with environmental variables of four microtopographic positions (MPs) along a wetland-upland gradient in forested depressional wetlands (FDWs) on the South Brazilian Plateau. Species richness and diversity were quite similar in the uplands and lowest in the wetlands, while structural parameters differed little among MPs. An indicator species analysis showed that few species were indicators of the upland sites, suggesting that species distribution was relatively uniform in comparison to the wetlands. The same patterns were revealed by a canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) that showed flooding to be the main factor driving tree species zonation. Apparently, Plinia peruviana (Poir.) Govaerts (Myrtaceae) is the only tree species with practically restricted distribution to the studied ecosystems, although FDWs and their surrounding uplands can have a disproportionately higher importance in the preservation of species that are under-represented in other regional forests. The occurrence of exclusively dystrophic soils in the study areas, in a region where eutrophic soils predominate, indicates that the studied uplands represent transitional zones between the FDWs and the forest matrix. As a pioneer study in FDWs on the South Brazilian Plateau, our findings suggest that the whole area of the topographic depressions should be protected at least until complementary studies propose proper buffer zones based on biological criteria. FDWs are unique ecosystems whose restoration, management and preservation are crucial to maintain spatial environmental heterogeneity and consequently species richness and ecosystem functions and services.

FITOSSOCIOLOGIA DE ESPÉCIES NATIVAS DE MATA CILIAR NO ENTORNO DO RESERVATÓRIO DIVISA, SÃO FRANCISCO DE PAULA, RS / PHYTOSOCIOLOGY OF RIPARIAN NATIVE SPECIES IN THE ENVIRONMENT DIVISA RESERVOIR, SÃO FRANCISCO DE PAULA, RS

Rorato, Daniele Guarienti 03 May 2012 (has links)
Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica / The work aims to characterize the forest structure and species composition in the area, identify the formation of clusters in the tree component and to determine the influence of soil variables in species and in groups. The study area is located at Divisa Reservoir, São Francisco de Paula, RS. The survey of the trees and shrubs vegetation was conducted in four fragments: F1 (9 ha), F2 (9 ha), F4 (2 ha) and F5 (9 ha). In each plot was performed the identification and measurement of the circumference at breast height (CAP) as the following size classes: Class I (10 x 20 m) individuals with CAP ≥ 30 cm; Class II (10 x 10 m) individuals with 15 ≤ CAP < 30 cm; Class III (5 x 5 m) individuals with 3 ≤ CAP < 15 cm and Class IV (2 x 2 m) the individuals with < 3 cm and CAP < 3 cm. The vertical structure was evaluated by the classification of the individuals surveyed on sociological classes, belonging to the sociological position 1 (PS1) individuals in the upper stratum, sociological position 2 (PS2) the stratum medium and sociological position 3 (PS3) in the lower stratum. The forest inventory data constituted a matrix parcel x species, which was used in multivariate analysis, by the method TWINSPAN, allowing the classification groups of parcels, based on the density of individuals. In addition to the vegetation, the environmental variables were obtained. The correlation between vegetation data and environmental data was performed by means of Canonical Correspondence Analysis, using the program PC-ORDTM for Windows version 5.10. The results demonstrate the formation of three distinct groups. Group 1 (GR1) represents the specific situation of riparian vegetation, Group 2 (GR2) represents a remnant of Araucaria Forest, under the influence of intensive livestock farming in the fields, and Group 3 (GR3) demonstrates an atypical situation, with the presence of species strongly influenced by the depth of the soil, and water saturation in the longest period of time. In GR1, the mixture of species of different ecological groups, with predominance of pioneer and secondary species, shows that the forest is presented in the dynamic process of succession. The GR2 has a negative influence of cattle on their structure and composition. Stand out in the riparian (GR1) Eugenia uruguayensis and Sebastiania commersoniana and clumps (GR2), the predominance are Araucaria angustifolia, Podocarpus lambertii and Myrceugenia cucullata, as main responsible for the existing formations. Furthermore, the slow decomposition of organic matter enhanced by higher humidity change the availability of nutrients for the species in place. In the woods, the constant presence of cattle negatively changes the structure of the understory, thus influencing the soil chemical characteristics. Species such as Araucaria angustifolia, Eugenia uruguayensis, Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Calyptranthes concinna, Lithraea brasiliensis, Myrsine coriacea, Ocotea pulchella e Sebastiania commersoniana can be used in the recovery and enrichment of riparian vegetation.

Spatiotemporal Variation of Karst Ecosystem Service Values and Its Correlation With Environmental Factors in Northwest Guangxi, China

Zhang, Mingyang, Zhang, Chunhua, Wang, Kelin, Yue, Yuemin, Qi, Xiangkun, Fan, Feide 01 November 2011 (has links)
In this investigation we analyzed the spatiotemporal variation of ecosystem service values (ESVs) and its correlation with numerous environmental factors (EFs) for the karst region of Northwest Guangxi, China, from 1985 to 2005 using remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and statistical techniques. The results indicate that historically ESVs for this karst region decreased from 1985 (109.652 billion Yuan) to 1990 (88.789 billion Yuan) and then increased at the turn of the twenty-first century. However, the ESVs in both 2000 (103.384 billion Yuan) and 2005 (106.257 billion Yuan) never achieved the level recorded in 1985. The total of nutrient cycling, organic production and gas regulation combined were 72.69, 64.57, 70.18 and 72.10% of ESVs in 1985, 1990, 2000 and 2005, respectively. In contrast, the ESVs of water conservation, soil reservation, recreation and culture were determined to be relatively low contributing only 17.44, 23.82, 19.26 and 24.76% of total ESVs, respectively, during these four years. With regards to the spatial distribution of ESVs, larger values were recorded in the west and smaller ones recorded in the east. The most significant factors that were deemed to influence ESVs are annual rainfall, per capita cropland, slope and vegetation coverage. Annual rainfall and slope exert a negative force, whereas per capita cropland and vegetation coverage exert a positive force on ESVs. The results of the study would suggest that ecosystem conditions of this important karst region have been improved as the result of the implementation of rocky desertification control policies.

Vegetation Responses to Seven Silvicultural Treatments in the Southern Appalachians One-Year After Harvesting

Hood, Sharon M. 12 June 2001 (has links)
The vegetation responses to seven silvicultural treatments one growing season after harvesting were examined on seven sites in the southern Appalachian mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. Treatments included: 1) control, 2) understory control by herbicide, 3) group selection, 4) high-leave shelterwood, 5) low-leave shelterwood, 6) leave tree, and 7) clearcut. The effects of harvesting were compared between treatments and between pre-harvest and post-harvest samplings. Species richness, percent cover, and local species extinctions were calculated for sample plots ranging in size from 1m2 to 2 ha. Vegetation richness and cover increased with increasing harvest intensity. Local species extinctions were similar in the control and disturbed treatments. Additional analyses were performed using the control, high-leave shelterwood, and clearcut on five of the seven sites to determine the relationships between soil, litter, and other environmental characteristics and vegetation in the herbaceous layer (<1 m in height). Multivariate analysis techniques were used to analyze average differences in species abundance between pre-harvest and post-harvest and to relate post-harvest vegetation to microsite characteristics. Regional-scale differences in site location were more important in explaining the presence of a species than were environmental characteristics. Within a region, species primarily were distributed along a light/litter weight gradient and secondarily along a soil properties and nutrient gradient. / Master of Science

Human impact, plant communities, diversity and regeneration in Budongo Forest Reserve, Northwestern Uganda

Mwavu, Edward Nector 21 May 2008 (has links)
Budongo Forest Reserve (BFR) is a flagship reserve for primate conservation due to its abundant chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) population, and its current management policy for multiple economic, conservation and environmental benefits. The identification and better understanding of the structure and dynamics of the forest/plant community types, patterns of species distribution and quantitative properties of their diversity is important to the conservation and sustainable management of tropical rainforests. This study seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the BFR forest community types, species diversity patterns and environmental correlates, as well as natural regeneration processes (i.e. seedling establishment and sprouting). Data on vegetation and environmental variables were collected using rectangular 50 x 100m (0.5 ha) plots, sub-divided into five equal contiguous (20 x 50 m) 0.1 ha sub-plots. Data on land-use/cover changes, and relevant associated socio-economic parameters were collected through the analysis of multi-temporal satellite imagery and field observations, as well as interviews of local households and key informants. The study revealed significant land-use/cover changes, with the area under sugarcane cultivation increasing over 17-fold, from 690 ha in 1988 to 12729 ha in 2002, with a concomitant loss of about 4680 ha (8.2% loss) of forest/woodland, mainly in the southern part of BFR. These changes are attributed to agricultural expansion, a rapidly increasing human population, exacerbated by large influxes of refugees, lack of alternative sources of income, conflicts of interest and political interference in the management of BFR, and an unclear land tenure system. The need for more land for agricultural expansion and the loss of woodlands (a source of building materials and fuelwood for the local communities) is leading to the invasion of and encroachment on BFR, which threatens plant and wild animal conservation. The study revealed that the vegetation of BFR is formed by a mosaic of plant communities, with the major forest types being; Pseudospondias microcarpa Swamp Forest, Funtumia elastica - Pouteria altissima, Lasiodiscus mildbraedi - Khaya anthotheca and Cynometra alexandri - Rinorea ilicifolia forest communities. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that soil nutrients (Si, Ca, N, Fe and Li) and anthropogenic disturbances are the main factors controlling forest community patterns. The variances explained as a proportion of total inertia were relatively high (0.53 and 0.56 for basal area and abundance, respectively), showing how well the measured variables explained species composition. These plant communities differed significantly in terms of woody species diversity and richness; being highest in the Pseudospondias microcarpa swamp and lowest in the Cynometra alexandri-Rinorea ilicifolia forest. However, about 48 species were shared between the forest community types. A total of 269 species representing 171 genera and 51 families was recorded. Fisher’s alpha-diversity ranged 4.45-30.59 and 3.07-29.7 for stem diameters ≥2.0 cm and ≥10 cm, respectively, being significantly higher for stem diameters ≥2.0 cm. The use of stem diameters ≥2.0 cm unveiled 53 more species (19.7%), with only 216 species recorded for the standard ≥10 cm dbh minimum size usually applied in tropical forests. A SHE analysis also showed greater richness (ln(S)) and H diversity for the >2.0 cm than the ≥10cm stem diameters. Hence, the study reaffirmed that the use of 10 cm as a minimum dbh in woody plant diversity studies in forests, where many tree species rarely exceed 10 cm stem diameter, is highly likely to underestimate diversity and richness, potentially biasing the understanding of diversity patterns. The most speciose families were Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Rubiaceae, Moraceae, Meliaceae, Rutaceae, Annonaceae, and Flacourtiaceae, accounting for 147 species. Families with the highest Familial Importance values (FIV) were; Fabaceae (17.5), followed by Euphorbiaceae (16.3), and Ulmaceae (8.35). The BFR exhibits characteristics intermediate between log-normal and log-series species-abundance distributions, indicating a community with a small number of abundant species and a relatively large proportion of rare species. Both Whittaker’s (βw) and the Morisita-Horn Index measures of β-diversity consistently showed higher β-diversity for logged and arboricide treated areas, followed by logged only, and then nature reserve historical management practice types. β-diversity was relatively high at the total forest community scale, but lower for stem diameter ≥2.0 cm than ≥10.0 cm data. Environmental variables significantly explained 66.5% and 61.9% of the variance in species composition for stem diameter ≥2.0 cm and ≥10.0 cm data, respectively. Hence, the variation in species composition of BFR is characterised by significant spatial patterns, and the patterns in β-diversity are to a great extent associated with environmental heterogeneity (i.e. soil nutrients, topographic and light gradients) and anthropogenic disturbances. Investigation of natural regeneration showed that sprouting is generally common among the woody species, with both canopy and sub-canopy trees sprouting prolifically. Of the 122 species affected by ii harvesting, and tree and branch fall disturbances, 199 (97.5%) from 31 families sprouted from the cut stumps, with only Caloncoba crepiniana (De Wild. & Th.Dur.) Gilg exhibiting both stem and root sprouting. Stump basal diameter, height, bark-thickness, and height of stump above the ground at which the first sprout emerged, were significant predictors of sprouting ability among individuals. Number of sprouts/stump differed significantly among families, species, and stump size-classes. Of the 241 seedling species, representing 46 families, about 30.3% were rare (only 2-10 individuals); while 12% were very rare (only 1 individual each). Cynometra alexandri C.H. Wright and Lasiodiscus mildbraedii Engl. were the most abundant seedlings and also among the most widely distributed species in the forest. Analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) revealed significant differences in seedling composition between transects, but not between topographic positions or historical management practice types. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that the measured environmental variables significantly explained 59.4% of the variance in seedling species distributions, with the three most important variables being organic matter, titanium and leaf area index (LAI; an indicator of light availability below the canopy). Hence, the important mechanisms influencing regeneration via seedlings in BFR operate through the soil system, and the ground and canopy vegetation characteristics. Nine of the 15 intensively studied multiple-use species, namely L. mildbraedii, Celtis Mildbraedii Engl., Pouteria altissima (A. Chiev.) Aubrev. & Pellegr., Chrysophyllum albidum G. Don., C. alexandri, Diospyros abyssinica (Hiern) F. White, Funtumia elastica (Preuss) Stapf., Chrysophyllum perpulchrum Hutch. & Dalz, and Antiaris toxicaria (Pers.) Lesch. had highly negative size-class distribution (SCD) slopes and substantial seedling regeneration. While Alstonia boonei De Wild. and Cordia millenii Bak. had weakly negative SCD slopes and pulsed or sporadic regeneration patterns. The wide distribution of seedlings for a variety of species, and with most of the intensively studied species having population structures showing healthy regeneration patterns, suggests that BFR is currently experiencing a continuous regeneration phase. In conclusion, the gradients in the vegetation of BFR are a reflection not only of site conditions as shown by the edaphic and abiotic factors, but also the history of human interventions.

Salim Neto, Salim Calil 08 November 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-12-23T13:51:53Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Salim Calil Salim Neto.pdf: 1388839 bytes, checksum: c02bf0bf1eb5e6e4e7c4a4c123c4f3c8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-11-08 / This study aimed to analyze the distribution of 40 tree species with the highest absolute density within an environmental gradient edge-inside a semideciduous forest fragment. The fragment studied has 119 ha and is situated in the Pacotuba National Forest, located in the municipality of Itapemirim-ES, southeastern Brazil. The environmental variables used were: Al saturation, base saturation, soil moisture, leaf area index (LAI) and average slope. Data were collected in 39 permanent plots, and 27 (10x30m) along the edge of the fragment and 12 plots (40x50m) inside the fragment. These plots are the same used in the evaluation of phytosociology of this fragment, whose absolute density data were used in this study. The characterization of soil fertility was held at a depth of 0-20 cm, where the sample was removed for analysis and acquisition of base saturation and Al saturation. Soil moisture was obtained by the gravimetric method, and the soil was collected in the dry season(Setembro/10). The Leaf Area Index was measured by non-destructive method, using two LAI-2050 sensors, connected to dataloggers LAI-2000, LI-COR brand. As this is semideciduous forest, the IAF was obtained in two different periods, one in the dry season (September/2010) and another in the rainy season (March/2011). The average slope was determined by inclinometer. To evaluate the difference between the inside and edge of the fragment, the results of the environmental variables were analyzed by Students t test for the significance level of 5%. To analyze the species-environment interaction on the edge and inside the fragment was applied canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) using CANOCO program, and used the permutation test Monte Carlo to assess the significance of the results. For the variables related to soil, it was found by Students t test, there is no statistically significant difference between the inner and edge of the fragment at the 5% probability, while for the IAF and the average slope at the same level of probability, difference was statistically significant, indicating that the fragment has studied a greater heterogeneity between edge and interior in relation to relief and the availability of solar radiation. The first two ordination axes obtained by the CCA for 40 species of higher mass density explained 64.5% of the variance and significance was observed by Monte Carlo test (P <0.01). The first axis, explaining 36.4% of the variance observed, most correlated with soil variables, while the 2nd ordination axis correlated most significantly with LAI and average slope. However, this study found that of 40 species of higher mass density, eleven were found in greater proportion on the edge, the other eleven in the interior of the fragment and 18 species were observed in a proportionally similar in both environments. Thus, to get a better understanding of the species-environment interaction on the edge and inside the fragment, were applied two more canonical correspondence analysis. The first considering the 22 species that were observed preferentially in one of the environments, and the second involving the CCA 18 species considered in this study as generalists. According to the results, it was found that the 18 generalist species were higher under the influence of base saturation and Al saturation, while the group of species showing a preference for the environment had a strong correlation with LAI and soil moisture indicating, that for these species, the restricted or availability of solar radiation in the environment provides suitable conditions for the proper establishment of the species / O presente estudo objetivou analisar a distribuição de 40 espécies arbóreas que apresentaram maior densidade absoluta dentro de um gradiente ambiental borda-interior de um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual.

Thus, this study aimed to characterize: a) the mechanisms of natural regeneration in a Mixed Rain Forest remnant and b) the population structure of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze, Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg and Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil. Therefore, the structure of the sample project PELD/CNPq was utilized, which was installed in the National Forest of São Francisco de Paula, RS, Brazil to evaluate six clusters (1 ha), with 16 plots (20 x 20m) each, disregarding 10m surround. The mechanisms of regeneration that have been evaluated were seed rain (SR), soil seed bank (SB) and a seedling bank (SeB) (individuals ≥ 30cm in height and diameter at breast height (DBH) <1cm). Additionally, natural regeneration establishment (RNE) (1 ≤ DBH <4.8 cm) sampled in cells of 3.16 x 3.16m, the size class I (SC I) ( 4.8 ≤ DBH <9.55 cm) in plots 10 x 10m and SC II (DBH ≥ 9.55 cm) shown on 96 plots of 20 x 20m were also considered for the study of populations. These data were collected in 2008, also being measured the DBH and sociological position. The mechanisms of regeneration were evaluated for the floristic composition and horizontal structure. In addition, the cluster analysis method TWINSPAN (Two-way Indicator Species Analysis) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were performed for the SeB. The population structure of the three species was examined by characterization of the sociological position, spatial distribution and frequency in size classes. In SR, we sampled 81 species, 46 genera and 28 families, in SB, 103, 65 and 41 and in SeB, 88, 57 and 36, respectively. The analysis by TWINSPAN ordered the formation of three groups in SeB, with their history of interference and environmental conditions. The CCA indicated the slope as environmental variable with the greatest influence on the distribution of plots and species. Group 1 had higher deposition of seeds, however, the lowest densities for the SB and SeB, which is correlated with a decrease in slope. The highest values in SR, SB and SeB were observed in Group 2, with the highest level of anthropogenic interference. Group 3, with lower SR and intermediate density for the other mechanisms, had its plots distributed in accordance with the increase in slope. Allophylus edulis (A. St.- Hil., Cambess & A. Juss.) Radlk., Piper xylosteoides Steud. and Piper aduncum L. showed positive correlation with the increase in slope. The population structure of the three species that were studied showed clustered distribution. Araucaria angustifolia, which is an emerging species, showed high density of individuals regenerating in environments with higher levels of alteration. Blepharocalyx salicifolius and Ilex paraguariensis, have distributed themselves predominantly in the upper and middle strata, and have shown higher population stability within the group on more advanced successional stage. Consequently, it is possible to conclude that the groups determine different patterns in forest regeneration and the structure of populations; therefore, they should be considered in case of possible interventions in the ecosystem. Allophylus edulis (A. St.-Hil., Cambess & A. Juss.)

FITOSSOCIOLOGIA DE COMUNIDADES ARBÓREAS EM SAVANAS DO BRASIL CENTRAL / PHYTOSOCIOLOGY OF THE ARBOREAL COMMUNITIES IN SAVANNAS FROM CENTRAL BRAZIL

Finger, Zenesio 11 February 2008 (has links)
These studies were undertaken in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, in the area of Chapada dos Guimarães and Baixada Cuiabana, which are constituted of a high plateau and a big low plain, respectively, being limited to two areas covered by vegetation with a savannic physiognomy, type Cerrado stricto sensu. Considering the hypothesis that the knowledge both of the biotic and abiotic components of the scenery and their interrelations allows a better understanding of the environmental dynamic, this dissertation had as objectives to characterize the savanna communities' arboreal stratum floristically and phytosociologically, concerning their richness, phytosociological structures and diversity; to identify floristic groupings through varied statistical techniques, representing them by dendrograms; to select species which are really able to make discrimination among the groups; to obtain some discriminant functions to allow classification and reclassification of specimen units, in the groups, to which they have more probability of belonging; to analyze and to characterize the obtained groups; to determine the patterns of distribution of the species of trees by the analysis of correlations of environmental variables with the distribution of the species and plots in the communities being studied; to determine the similarity indexes among the floristic groups and to compare themselves and, finally, to test methods of assorted statistical analysis for application in studies of vegetable communities. Data of vegetation were obtained by the method of multiple plots, with size of 20 X 20 m (400 m2), randomly disposed in each one of the areas being studied. 82 plots were randomly installed. In each one of the 82 patternless units, the circumferences of all the arboreal plants with perimeter to 0,30 m from the level of the soil (PAB) larger or equal to 15,7 cm (DAB 5,0 cm) and the total height of the plants were obtained. In the core of each plot, for determination of the chemical and textural variables of the soil, simple samples of superficial soil were collected (0-30 cm depth). Species were organized according to the families recognized by Angiosperm Phylogeny Group II. The sampling sufficiency was obtained based on the analysis of the curve of the collector. Phytosociological parameters were calculated for each formed group, with the purpose of characterizing them phytosociologically. Having as variables the Index of Covering Value (IVC) of the species, the classification was accomplished by the TWINSPAN (Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis) method, regarding the plots, with the objective of classifying them in floristic groups. The diversity was determined by the Shannon-Wienner and the Simpson Index. The discriminant analysis was undertaken through the STEPWISE method. Considering the matrix of presence and absence of the species in the groups, the floristic similarity was calculated among the groups by the Sorensen Index. To evaluate the hypothesis of the correlation existence between the distribution of the species and environmental variables, the canonical correspondence analysis was accomplished (CCA). The test of permutation of Monte Carlo was applied to verify the importance of the correlations between the emerging distribution patterns of the species and the environmental variables in final CCA. To determine the responsible environmental factors for the distribution of the species, the analysis of regression logistics was used. The Forward Stepwise (Wald) method was used for the sequential selection of the variables. By the species-area curve, it could be observed that, from the plot 75 (30.000 m2 out of the area used as sample), the curve is stabilized with the occurrence of 114 species in the 82 studied plots, distributed between 81 genera and 36 botanical families. The families better represented were Fabaceae, Myrtaceae and Vochysiaceae. The alpha diversity from the arboreal vegetation found in the area being studied was of 4,033 considering the Shannon-Wiener Index and of 0,975 considering the Simpson Index, representing a great floristic diversity. The divisions generated by the classification through the TWINSPAN method separated the plots into four groups: Group 1 Myrcia albo-tomentosa Camb. Association; Group 2 Pterodon emarginatus Vog. Association ; Group 3 Curatella americana L. Association; and Group 4 Qualea multiflora Mart. Association. In the discriminant analysis, 100% of the plots were classified correctly in the Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, indicating precision of the grouping technique used. The largest similarity could be observed in the Groups 2 and 3, whose Sorensen Index was close to 1 (0,7310). In the four floristic groups, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Vochysiaceae, Annonaceae and Apocynaceae families were the most representative floristically in terms of genera and species. In CCA the correlations of the environmental variables with the first ordination axis were, in decreasing order of absolute values, saturation for aluminum, altitude s.n.m., saturation of bases, saturation for magnesium, relationship magnesium/potassium, saturation for hydrogen, potassium tenor, pH(H2O) and relationship calcium/potassium. The saturation for calcium variable presented very weak correlation with the first axis, however, with the second ordination axis, it was very strong. In the diagram of ordination of the plots, the four floristic groups were discriminated in sections different from the diagram, reinforcing their visualization as much defined habitats and with composition of particular species, resulting in clear separation of the four soil classes previously identified. The logistic regression analysis was useful to prove the results obtained from CCA, concerning the environmental variables which determined the distribution of the indicative species of the floristic groups in the studied communities.

Monte Carlo simulations using the CCA eingenvalues as test statistics revealed that changes in zooplankton species composition along the environmental gradients of trophic state and abiogenic turbidity were highly significant. The species Brachionus calyciflorus, Thermocyclops sp. and Argyrodiaptomus sp. were good indicators of eutrophic conditions while the species Brachionus dolabratus, Keratella tropica and Hexarthra sp. were good indicators of high turbidity due to suspended sediments. The rotifer genus Brachionus was the most species-rich taxon, comprising five species which were associated with different environmental conditions. Therefore, we tested whether this genus alone could potentially be a better biological indicator of these environmental gradients than the entire zooplankton assemblages or any other random set of five species. The ordination results show that the five Brachionus species alone did not explain better the observed pattern of environmental variation than most random sets of five species. Therefore, this genus could not be selected as a target taxon for more intensive environmental monitoring as has been previously suggested by Attayde and Bozelli (1998). Overall, our results show that changes in the water quality of man-made lakes in a tropical semi-arid region have significant effects on the structure of zooplankton assemblages that can potentially affect the functioning of these ecosystems / As respostas das assembl?ias zooplanct?nicas ?s varia??es na qualidade da ?gua de quatro reservat?rios, causadas por eutrofiza??o e assoreamento, foram investigadas por meio de uma an?lise de correspond?ncia can?nica.
