Recursion in Language and Number: Is There a Relationship?

Guerrero, Diego 01 September 2020 (has links) (PDF)
Numbers are an important part of the cultural knowledge in the modern world. Its use is fundamental in the conception and development of modern science. There are different sets of numbers called numerical systems. The most frequently used numerical system is the set of natural numbers that is composed of positive integers. Natural numbers have several forms to express the cardinality; the most frequently used is the base-10 number system, it represents the number using base quantities and powers of ten. For example, the current calendar year could be expressed as 2018 ; it’s notation describes the additive and multiplicative composition of base quantities and powers of ten (i.e., 2*103 + 0*102 + 1*101 + 8*100). Also, we can use the notation 11111100010 (i.e., 1*210 + 1*29 + 1*28 + 1*27 + 1*26 + 1*25 + 0*24 + 0*23 + 0*22 + 1*21 + 0*20) to express the same calendar year in base-2. Base number systems express cardinal values using addition and multiplication (two operations defined in natural numbers). However, even if the base-10 system looks close to the human experience; it is an abstract form that requires an external representation to communicate cardinal values. An example of these external representations are cardinal numbers, for example, the number 2018 is represented in English using the words two thousand eighteen, but in Spanish, the cardinal number dos mil dieciocho is used. Cardinal numbers are a particular case in childhood development because it is the first exposure that children have to the natural numbers. Then the properties of the cardinal numbers could be an essential part of children's number comprehension. But one question arises in this frame: What are the children's capacities that permit the children to understand cardinal numbers? One possibility that is proposed in the field of number cognition is that children’s comprehension of recursion in language triggers the acquisition of natural numbers. For some authors, recursion is an operation that is shared between natural numbers (specifically, cardinal numbers) and language (Barner, 2017; Cheung et al., 2017; Yang, 2016). In this study, we explore the relationship between recursion in language and cardinal numbers. To do so, we study the comprehension of recursive genitives and the production of cardinal numbers in English- speaking and Mandarin-speaking children. The results suggest an association in Mandarin-speaking children, but not in English-speaking children. While these empirical results are inconclusive, I provide a theoretical analysis that gives some insights into how the structure of cardinal numbers could be defined using the concept of recursion.

Beaudin, René 07 1900 (has links)

Biaxial Mechanical Evaluation of Uterosacral and Cardinal Ligaments

Baah-Dwomoh, Adwoa Sarpong 06 March 2018 (has links)
The uterosacral ligament (USL) and the cardinal ligament (CL) are two major suspensory tissues that provide structural support to the vagina/cervix/uterus complex. These ligaments have been studied mainly due for their role in the surgical repair for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). POP, which is the descent of a pelvic organ from its normal place towards the vaginal walls and into the vaginal cavity, affects an estimated 3.3 million women in the United States annually. Despite their important mechanical function, little is known about the elastic and viscoelastic properties of the USL and CL due to ethical concerns with in vivo testing of human tissues and the lack of accepted animal models. The goal of this first study is to help establish an appropriate animal model for studying the mechanics of these pelvic supportive ligaments. To achieve this, the first rigorous comparison of histological and planar equi-biaxial mechanical properties of the swine and human USLs was completed. Relative collagen, smooth muscle, and elastin contents were quantified from histological sections and the USL was found to have similar components in both species, with a comparable relative collagen content. Using the digital image correlation (DIC) method to calculate the in-plane Lagrangian strain, no differences in the peak strain during precon- ditioning/cyclic loading tests, secant modulus of the pre-creep/elastic response, and strain at the end of creep tests were detected in the USLs from the two species along both axial loading directions (the main in vivo loading direction and the direction that is perpendicular to it). Because these ligaments are subjected to repeated constant loads in vivo, the effect of re- peated biaxial loads at three different load levels (1 N, 2 N, or 3 N) on elastic and creep properties of the swine CL was investigated. The results showed that CL was elastically anisotropic, as statistical differences were found between the mean strains along the two axial loading directions for specimens at all three different load levels. The increase in strain over time by the end of the 3rd creep test was comparable along the axial loading direc- tions. The greatest mean normalized strain (or, equivalently, the largest increase in strain over time) was measured at the end of the 1st creep test, regardless of the equi-biaxial load magnitude or loading direction. Overall, these experimental findings validate the use of swine as an appropriate animal model and offer new knowledge of the mechanical properties of the USL and CL that can guide the development of better treatment methods such as surgical reconstruction for POP. / Ph. Stromová vlastnost kardinálů / Tree property at more cardinals

Stejskalová, Šárka January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis we study the Aronszajn and special Aronszajn trees, their existence and nonexistence. We introduce the most common definition of special Aronszajn tree and some of its generalizations and we examine the relations between them. Next we study the notions of the tree property and the weak tree property at a given regular cardinal κ. The tree property means that there are no Aronszajn trees at κ and the weak tree property means that there are no special Aronszajn trees at κ. We define and compare two forcings, the Mitchell forcing and the Grigorieff forcing, and we use them to obtain a model in which the (weak) tree property holds at a given cardinal. At the end, we show how to use the Mitchell forcing to construct a model in which the (weak) tree property holds at more than one cardinal. 1

L'ascension du Cardinal de Fleury (1653-1726) / The rise of Cardinal de Fleury (1653-1726)

Malcor, Fabrice 30 January 2016 (has links)
The ascent of the cardinal of Fleury describes the mechanisms which have driven the heir of an "average" family of financiers in Languedoc to become Louis XV’s Prime Minister in 1726. It is necessary to underline at first the whole rise of a linage which plunges its roots into the merchandise in the Lodévois for at least the XVIth century. The transition to the finance is made with the cardinal’s grandfather and continues with his father Jean and especially his uncle Pierre-Moses, trésorier de France at the bureau des finances of Montpellier. The latter favors the rise in Paris of the young André-Hercule who embraces from then the ecclesiastical career. The causes of the ascent are individual and are based on the set of the clienteles, with at first the cardinal of Bonsy, then the cardinal of Noailles who obtains from reluctant Louis XIV the bishop's siege of Fréjus ( in 1698 ) for his protégé. The continuation is more a matter of contingency but cannot be extracted from the religious context and, even there, the system of the clienteles. The designation as the private tutor of the future Louis XV, a few days before the death of the Great King, allows Fleury to make his comeback to the Court. The indisputable skill of Fleury allows him to take advantage of the politico-religious evolution led by the Regent who, after an initial phase of proximity with the opponents of the Unigenitus bull, soon gets loose from them. Fleury embodies a moderate support but firm. His closeness with the small king makes of him a major actor. The death of Dubois and of Philippe of Orléans leaves him alone in front of the duke of Bourbon (1723). Three years only will be enough for M. de Fréjus to eliminate the official Prime Minister.

Reflexão de funções cardinais e da metrizabilidade / Reflection of cardinal functions and of metrizability

Dias, Rodrigo Roque 04 August 2008 (has links)
The concept of reflection in topology expresses the fact that a space satisfies a given property provided that its \"small\" subspaces do. This work presents a study on reflection of properties concerning most of the main cardinal functions and metrizability, as well as other related properties. Open problems --such as Hamburger\'s question-- are also discussed, including partial answers and consistent examples. Several of the proofs presented here make use of elementary submodels, nowadays an important tool in the study of general topology.

We aim to observe how the platonic doctrine does not change radically, but rather completes itself with the combination of the two mentioned works, for which we shall weave our analysis setting out from the logical temporal proposition in the platonic thinking, considering also the research of his conception of Justice in order to verify the maturity of its posture as it relates to the organization of the polis / A presente tese predispõe-se a estudar o pensamento platônico na perspectiva do Direito Natural, em especial na República, e sua consequente positivação e integração na obra As Leis.

The Inner Dynamics of Christian Life. Aspects of fundamental Theology in writings of the Cardinal Avery Dulles S.J.

ŠTĚCH, František January 2006 (has links)
This disertation is mapping the main aspects of fundamental theology in the writings of the important American theologian, Cardinal Avery Dulles S.J. These are: Revelation, Faith and Church. The chapter about Cardinal's life story and writings as well as exposition of theological method in general focused on the Cardinal's own method in theology precedes the treatise of mentioned fundamental theology aspects. The method in question is the one of symbolic realism, which works with fundamental theology topics due to the model typologies (models of revelation, models of faith, and models of the church). Given theme of each typology is introduced as a theme of fundamental theology, later the detailed analysis is done and at the end the Dulles's own solution of the particular problem is presented. All mentioned themes prove some mutual relationships which together create the "inner dynamics of Christian life", which has its enjambments also in the whole history of salvation.
