Near-infrared proper motion surveysSmith, Leigh Charles January 2016 (has links)
I present the development of two near infrared proper motion pipelines for high resolution near infrared data from UKIDSS and the VISTA VVV survey. The UKIDSS pipeline is capable of accuracies of order 5-10 mas yr⁻¹ for bright sources with the largest epoch baselines (~ 8 years). The VVV pipeline reaches 1-2 mas yr⁻¹ proper motion precision at the bright end and parallax measurements at ~ 1 mas precision. It will be possible to improve upon the VVV astrometric precision due to increases in data volume and further pipeline development. I have used the proper motion pipelines to generate three near infrared proper motion catalogues of the UKIDSS LAS and GPS and the VVV survey. The LAS proper motion catalogue covers 1500 deg2 at high Galactic latitudes and contains approximately 15 million sources with two J band epochs. The GPS proper motion catalogue covers 1500 deg2 of the northern Galactic plane and contains approximately 400 million sources with two K band epochs. The VVV proper motion catalogue covers 560 deg2 of the Galactic bulge and disc and contains approximately 200 million sources with between 50 and 150 Ks band epochs. I have also produced a preliminary 5σ parallax catalogue containing 3403 VVV sources. The LAS and GPS proper motion catalogues have been used by myself and other authors to identify and study many new examples of high proper motion stars, brown dwarfs, ul-tracool dwarf benchmark candidates, cool white dwarfs, substellar subdwarfs and nearby sources within < 25 pc. These catalogues remain far from fully exploited and will be a useful resource for future research by the astronomical community. Exploitation of the VVV proper motion catalogue is still in its infancy, yet it has already generated large numbers of new high proper motion sources. These include new brown dwarf candi-dates, important benchmark objects, and nearby sources which have previously avoided detection. Parallax results from the VVV pipeline will be useful to improve low mass star/ultracool dwarf luminosity functions, significantly increasing the numbers of brown dwarfs with known parallaxes and illustrates how general purpose multi-epoch wide area surveys can generate parallaxes. Finally, I discuss the long term usefulness of such catalogues in the Gaia era and how they might be exploited in the future.

Time and resources are crucial" : The Swedish public library websites from a multilingual perspectiveLaajala, Kalle January 2019 (has links)
Introduction. Against the background of the last decades’ developments of Swedish public library websites and the changing language and minority situation, a study of the multilingual web accessibility status is motivated, including identifying obstacles for moving forward on the topic. At its core it’s a question of democratic rights. Method. Website observations with multilingual aspects in focus were conducted on the public library websites housing their catalogues, for all Swedish municipalities. Same libraries and their web system vendors (or the like) were then invited to an online survey which complemented the observations with their thoughts and opinions on the topic. Both studies produced primarily quantitative data, although the response rate from system vendors (or the like) was low. Analysis. Quantitative analysis was carried out on the data, with an element of content analysis on the survey’s comments and open-ended questions. The quantitative analysis employed Microsoft Excel for descriptive statistics. Activity theory constituted the main theoretical framework for further analysis and interpretation. Results. Prerequisites of multilingual accessibility were largely in place, but potentials of underlying web systems were not fully utilized. Checking against selected official web guidelines in the public sector, library websites showed varying compliance but also room for improvement in general. Survey results proved respondents consider multilingual accessibility on library websites fairly important. Libraries show awareness of current language minorities although demographic assessments are rarely made. Lack of resources in a broad sense was stated as a hindrance for multilingual website work. The systems of Swedish public libraries are largely dominated by one vendor, although this is a field undergoing changes, with some libraries switching to open source systems. Conclusion. Results suggest progress on this topic is highly dependent on getting library management and decision makers on board. More co-operation is needed, and there’s room for education. A few suggestions for future research were given.

The observations of the supernovae, the cosmic microwave background, and more recently the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations and the weak lensing effects, converge to a LambdaCDM model, with an accelerating expansion of the today Universe. This model need two dark components to fit the observations, the dark matter and the dark energy. Two approaches seem particularly promising to measure both geometry of the Universe and growth of dark matter structures, the analysis of the weak distortions of distant galaxies by gravitational lensing and the study of the baryon acoustic oscillations. Both methods required a very large sky surveys of several thousand square degrees. In the context of the spectroscopic survey of the space mission EUCLID, dedicated to the study of the dark side of the universe, I developed a pixel simulation tool for analyzing instrumental performances. The proposed method can be summarized in three steps. The first step is to simulate the observables, ie mainly the sources of the sky. I work up a new method, adapted for spectroscopic simulations, which allows to mock an existing survey of galaxies in ensuring that the distribution of the spectral properties of galaxies are representative of current observations, in particular the distribution of the emission lines. The second step is to simulate the instrument and produce images which are equivalent to the expected real images. Based on the pixel simulator of the HST, I developed a new tool to compute the images of the spectroscopic channel of EUCLID. The new simulator have the particularity to be able to simulate PSF with various energy distributions and detectors which have different pixels

ASCIS subject headings and student terminology : the relationship between the subject headings used in manual school library catalogues in New South Wales and the subject access terms generated by NSW Higher School Certificate syllabus documents, textbooks and examination questionsSorby, Janet, n/a January 1989 (has links)
The present study was undertaken to investigate the concerns of secondary school teacher-librarians, that the subject headings set down by the Australian Schools Catalogue Information Service (ASCIS) do not cover topics in senior sourses of study. NSW HSC Economics was chosen to test this perception.
Terms were extracted from three textual sources (syllabus, textbook and examination papers) and checked against the subject headings in the ASCIS Subject Headings List. A comparison was made between terms which matched exactly, those which were only partially matched and those which had no match. The linguistic complexity of the term (single-word or multi-word) and the number of textual sources using the term were also taken into account.
The results showed a varying degree of match between textual terms and subject headings. Single-word terms found in more than one textual source were much more likely to be found in the subject headings than those from only one textual source. Multi-word terms were found less frequently than single-word terms, but were also more likely to be found when they came from more than one textual source. There was a large number of partial matches in this group, and these were found to be more general in concept than the textual terms.
Most of the terms were found, but the general nature of the partial matches and the lack of adequate cross references may cause problems in subject analysis and retrieval.

A comparative study of concept-based and procedural teaching methods in user instruction of the OPAC at the M.L. Sultan Technikon.Choonoo, Pearl. January 1999 (has links)
The purpose of this research was firstly to compare the differences in online performance between two groups trained to use the Online Public Access Catalogue at the M L Sultan Technikon using two different types of instruction, namely the teaching methods of concept-based and procedural instruction. Secondly, the objective of the research was to compare these two teaching methods in relation to first year students at the M L Sultan
Technikon with differing levels of library experience, computer experience and English language experience. To meet the objectives of the research, literature was reviewed and analysed from various sources. Original research was conducted using the method of a quasi-experiment. A random sample of 120 students were split between two teaching conditions, with sixty
participants in a concept-based teaching condition and sixty participants in a procedural teaching condition. Research instruments used were a background questionnaire to collect demographic information, a pre-and post test to evaluate significant differences between the teaching methods, an evaluation questionnaire to collect affective responses, direct observation, and transaction log monitoring of the searches conducted. In a one-hour lecture the concept-based group were taught general search concepts using model-based instruction techniques and the procedural lecture demonstrated methods of searching in a step-by-step fashion. Data analysis made use of Microsoft Access 97 and Excell 97 software to code and verify the data, and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences
(SPSS), v9.0 to conduct statistical analysis. The research found that first year students were generally inexperienced in the use of the online information retrieval system. The majority of the participants in the study did not have any computer experience, and made use of English as a second language. Others, although not in the majority were found to have low levels of library experience. Performance on pre-tests were generally low for these participants while those who had experience in the use of libraries, computers and who regarded English as a first language were able to make fair use of the system for simple tasks such as author and title. This
suggested that prerequisite competencies needed for online searching were, library literacy, computer literacy and some proficiency in the use of English. Performance on search tasks found no significant differences on simple tasks between the teaching conditions. However, variances in performance as a result of individual differences were found. On difficult tasks participants fared better with concept-based instruction resulting in significant differences in performance. The findings of this research supported the need for online instruction to novice end-users, taking cognisance of the need for suitable venues equipped with adequate hardware, provision of staff, and allocation of sufficient time for such instruction. The research proposes that model-based teaching be encouraged, especially for difficult tasks. In the
decisions made however, instruction must take note of the background of participants. Further proposals for instruction and other related aspects are discussed in the research. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1999.

Both museums and the Cathedral, present several problems regarding the correct identification of its art collection, with most of the art work of unknown origin. The objective of this research was to catalog the collection of the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Campinas from 1840 to 1923. The collection includes sacred images, paintings, architectural details and carving works. This research made possible to trace and catalog the entire collection of the period thru analysis of primary documents and iconographic comparison. Regarding the image collection, the real amplitude of the research should comprehend the period from 1774 to 1923. As the New Church was being built, the collection of images was being formed at the Old Church, but with the certain that the collection would be transferred to the new site after its inauguration. It was also possible to discover the authorship and the history of the original paintings present at the inauguration of the temple in 1883, as well as the authorship and history of the Evangelists and Apostles statues at the façade. The origin of the external statues of the temple was unveiled and the research on unprecedented primary sources made possible to find misconceptions at the description of the current catalog of the collection. The research of the carving works revealed information that contributed to attribute four woodworkers to the whole carving work at the church: Vitoriano dos Anjos, Bernardino de Sena, Raffaelo de Rosa and Marino Del Favero, the last two Italians. It was also possible to attribute to each one, other artworks, which the authorship was unknown until now. Due to the wide scope of the research, it was possible to unveil the history of the façade construction and to elucidate many of the related events such as the accidents, the architects and their contribution on the project and construction of the temple as well as constructive systems and used materials. Still in the architecture scope, it was disclosed all the modified and built elements at the renovation in 1923. Aside the catalog of the collection, as a complement, it was created a dictionary of all the participating artists of the collection with bio info. The cataloging of the collection intend to attend two distinct proposes, as an academic resource and as a daily reference for the museums. In order to come to a conclusion, one can easily realize that the history of the construction of the temple and the gathering of its collection is far richer than could be imagined making this research a starting point and a solid anchor for future researches / Mestrado / Historia da Arte / Mestra em História

Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905), un sculpteur sous la Troisième République / Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905), a sculptor of the Third RepublicOrensanz, Camille 02 July 2014 (has links)
Louis Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) was the son of a modest cloth and porcelain painter. He followed the footsteps of his elder brother Felix, Grand Prix of painting in 1844, and won in 1865 the Prix de Rome of sculpture. This was the first step to a brilliant career. Ernest Barrias rapidly became one of the most famous sculptors of his time and one of the leading members of Paris artistic community. He was awarded a medal of honor in the 1878 Salon de Paris, and became member of the Beaux Arts academy as early as 1884. His interest in all facets of his art led him to design numerous monuments, and he took part in some of the most important projects of the Third Republic. As many of his contemporary artists, he struggled to reconcile fine arts with decorative arts. His abundant and eclectic work testifies to the then extraordinary development of sculpture, and reveals some of the stylistic evolutions and most preferred themes of his time. Barrias was committed throughout his whole life to a naturalist and figurative tradition, which he taught to his students in his studio of the École des Beaux Arts until his death in 1905. Barrias was heavily criticized in his final years and then almost left into oblivion, along with many of his contemporary artists. The sculptor was the subject of no former thesis. This study reconstructs his biography, analyzes the evolution of his work in the artistic context of the period, and collect all his work in a complete catalogue.
