A plan for the establishment of a national bibliographic network for Kuwait in the light of international and local standards

Al-humood, Nahla January 1998 (has links)
This research was carried out in order to gather information on the current situation and practices of libraries in Kuwait so as to investigate the possibly of designing a model for establishment of a national bibliographic network in the State of Kuwait. As context for the research, background is provided on national bibliographic networks in developed countries and in the Arab World, together with consideration of the role of a national library in such a network. In order to gather data, three questionnaire surveys (for library administrators, cataloguers and automation specialists) were distributed to all types of libraries in Kuwait. Information was sought on the composition and training of staff, the nature and extent of library resources and databases, the degree of automation of systems and services, and the nature of co-operation and resource sharing. Opinions were also sought on the feasibility of establishing centralised cataloguing and the implementation of a national bibliographic network. Follow-up interviews were also carried out, and professionals in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia were consulted for advice on practical solutions and recommendations for an effective national bibliographic network. The findings of the questionnaire surveys indicated some deficiencies that Kuwait libraries face: the absence of a leadership role by the national library; lack of a deposit law for national publications that would ensure a collection that would provide central focal point for a national information infrastructure; coverage by the national bibliography is neither comprehensive nor adequate; there are no formal systems of co-operation for resource sharing; implementation of standards for bibliographic services has been ineffective; many libraries still lack automated systems; lack of professional staff was noted by all sectors. Nevertheless, respondents were positive in their concern for needing strong leadership, adequate financial support for the national library, and expressed a desire for co-operation, which was felt to be possible even under the current circumstances. Based on the findings of the survey and experience described in the literature, it is concluded that a national library is the most appropriate body to develop and maintain the bibliographic databases that would be the centre of national bibliographic network. A model for such a network is presented, discussing the links to different libraries in the country and the duties and responsibilities of the national and other libraries in attaining successful functioning of the network. Recommendations are made for the functioning of the proposed national bibliographic network.

RDA und GND: Die Zukunft des Katalogisierens

Lazarus, Jens 15 July 2010 (has links)

What do Swedish catalogues look like? : Current challenges and practices in cataloguing roman-fleuves

Lindblom, Sonia January 2022 (has links)
One common request at a library’s information desk is for a sequel of a book title or where to begin reading a roman-fleuve such as "Harry Potter". Experienced librarians might know the answers to the most famous titles, but there is not much evidence that they can retrieve such information from the library’s catalogue. This study investigates inter-work relationships in seven Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) and looks at the phenomenon with an empirical, exploratory approach. Based on previous empirical studies about cataloguing praxis, this study seeks to add up to those efforts by analysing catalogue records to determine the effects of past and current standards in cataloguing sequences of novels. Some records have such information coded in several fields. As a maximum, it appears six times, although it is uncommon to occur more than three times. On the other hand, as should be expected, the Machine-readable cataloguing (MARC) fields for the information about the position of a novel within the roman-fleuve match the cases where the title of the roman-fleuve is given. Cataloguing practices have evolved from paper format, which posed challenges in physical space, into machine-readable and relational databases. OPACs are still debuting in a new era with linked data. Swedish OPACs still do not deliver much information regarding roman-fleuve and its parts. The data shows, however, that a fair amount of records offer the possibility for conveying such information to the users if the OPACs look in the proper fields of the catalogue record.

Examining the limitations of classification and indexing from a librarian perspective, with a particular view onto library representations of marginalised communities

Ramischwili-Schäfer, Anuka January 2022 (has links)
This thesis investigates the inconsistencies in classification and indexing present in the University of the Arts Library catalogue, and examines how these relate to the perspectives of qualified librarians through the use of qualitative interviews. We surmise that effective representation of items relating to marginalised communities, within the language of classification and indexing, has a great impact on the findability of these items. Representation of marginalised groups within knowledge institutions proves to be ever more significant in aiding democracy, dialogue and equitable access to information; therefore, it is significant to scrutinise, critique and propose development of this representation.

Resource Description and Access (RDA): continuity in an ever-fluxing information age with reference to tertiary institutions in the Western Cape

van Rensburg, Rachel Janse January 2018 (has links)
Magister Library and Information Studies - MLIS / Although Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been discussed extensively amongst the ranks of cataloguers internationally, no research on the perceptions of South African cataloguers was available at the time of this research. The aim of this study was to determine how well RDA was faring during the study's timeframe, to give a detailed description regarding cataloguer perceptions within a higher education setting in South Africa. Furthermore, to determine whether the implementation of RDA has overcome most of the limitations that AACR2 had within a digital environment, to identify advantages and/or perceived limitations of RDA as well as to assist cataloguers to adopt and implement the new standard effectively. The study employed a qualitative research design assisted by a phenomenological philosophy to gain insight into how cataloguers experienced the implementation and adoption of RDA by means of two concurrent web-based questionnaires. The study concluded that higher education cataloguing professionals residing in the Western Cape were decidedly positive towards the new cataloguing standard. Although there were some initial reservations, they were overcome to such an extent that ultimately no real limitations were identified, and that RDA has indeed overcome most of the limitations displayed by AACR2. Many advantages of RDA were identified, and participants expressed excitement about the future capabilities of RDA as it continues toward a link-data milieu, making library metadata more easily available.

As this research has revealed a distinctly positive attitude from cataloguers' two main matters for future research remains, being: ? Why South African participants in this study voiced almost no perceived limitations to RDA as a cataloguing standard. Future research might be able to relay information regarding this trend, especially in the light that it was not a global phenomenon. ? A deeper look might have to be taken at how participants' experienced RDA training as this phenomenon might be closely linked to the reasons why the participants did not mention more limitations.

Abstract: The relevancy of not only the Web but also the digital libraries for the diverse branches of Science has stimulated researchers and scientific communities to search for integration solutions, interchange and semantic understanding about the contents that circulate in them. In the present scenary, a strong tendency is verified for the availability of digital contents and the lack of use of adequate patterns for the representation and description of those resources in digital environments, what is pointed by literature as a great concern for the scientific community and focused on this work as a problem of the research. In this context, the proposal of this research is to verify, in the scientific literature, the applicability and functionality of the technologies and instruments available as patterns of representation and description of content and form, in the ambit of digital libraries, with the objective of identifying and characterizing the use and the application of MarcOnt as a tool for the construction of forms of information representation for digital libraries at the present time, highlighting it as an instrument for describing the semantic aspects of the digital contents in these environments. As a methodology, the present work is characterized by being an exploratory and descriptive analysis of the subject, with which it is possible to obtain subsidies for a better and more detailed understanding and comprehension of MarcOnt and the technologies that are included in the ambit of digital libraries for the Semantic Web construction. As a result, it was attempted to demonstrate the application of the MarcOnt tool in a specific informational environment, the JeromeDL Semantic Digital Library, to analyze the fundamentals of Cataloguing the forms of representation of informational resources. That made us define the categories for the future analysis of the system comparing to the MARC21 metadata pattern. / Mestre

Accordingly, the present research aimed to analyze how bibliographic records of theses and dissertations of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) on areas of literature and cinema will be affected with the RDA standards. To answer the questionings conducted in this study, it is outlined as specific objectives: develop bibliographic records of theses and dissertations at the UFSC RDA standard; compare the cataloging elements in AACR2 and RDA standards; analyze bibliographic records of theses and dissertations of UFSC in the fields of literature and cinema according to RDA standards; identify and propose consistent elements for the description of bibliographic records of theses and dissertations UFSC according to the RDA standard; analyze bibliographic records of theses and dissertations of UFSC, specifically with regard to the entities-relationships; and verify in the national and international literature practical implementation of the new code that enable to identify advantages and disadvantages of RDA. The research is a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study, using the method of case study and, according to its purpose, it can be an applied research. The results of the study were analyzed from the user tasks perspective and pointed out that the bibliographic description presents significant changes in referring to the format, content and media of a resource. Based on the analysis of the records and the results obtained, it can be concluded that the cataloger needs to spend more attention, knowledge and time practicing, suggesting to this professional the need for continuing education.
