La demande croissante de toujours plus de débit pour les télécommunications entraine une augmentation de la fréquence de fonctionnement des liaisons séries. Cette demande se retrouve aussi dans les systèmes embarqués du fait de l'augmentation des performances des composants et périphériques. Afin de s'assurer que le train de données est bien réceptionné, un circuit de restitution d'horloge et de données est placé avant tout traitement du coté du récepteur. Dans ce contexte, les activités de recherche présentées dans cette thèse se concentrent sur la conception d'une CDR (Clock and Data Recovery). Nous détaillerons le comparateur de phase qui joue un rôle critique dans un tel système. Cette thèse présente un comparateur de phase ayant comme avantage d'avoir une mode de fenêtrage et une fréquence de fonctionnement réduite. La topologie spéciale utilisée pour la CDR est décrite, et la théorie relative aux oscillateurs verrouillés en injection est expliquée. L'essentiel du travail de recherche s'est concentrée sur la conception et le layout d'une restitution d'horloge dans le domaine millimétrique, à 80 Gbps. Pour cela plusieurs prototypes ont été réalisés en technologie BiCMOS 130 nm de STMicrolectronics.

High performance, low-power and robust multi-gigabit wire-line design

The object of this research is to develop robust wire-line systems which demonstrate high performance while simultaneously consuming low power. The main focus of this work is the Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) system, which is the primary circuit of any modern wire-line transceiver. Different techniques starting from circuit-level to system-level have been investigated in this work to improve the performance of multi-gigabit CDRs. A 62 GHz bandwidth amplifier has been presented to address the need for a scalable amplifier for CDR needs. A new technique has been proposed to improve the radiation immunity of latches, to reduce the BER in CDRs occurring due to package radiations. An injection-lock based clock recovery method was investigated as an alternative to PLL based CDRs as they can be used for burst-mode wire-line communication. The investigation yielded the vulnerability of the method to jitter (false-locking and high jitter transfer), the attenuation of which is critical to commercial CDRs. A novel false-lock detector system has been proposed and demonstrated for the first time as a robust solution to the issue of false-locking of CDRs due to repetitive patterns. The implementation of the final CDR system required the use of an L-C tank VCO, the components of which are generic for all commercial CDRs. A new systematic layout technique for the VCO has been proposed and demonstrated in this work to substantially improve the layout area and the associated parasitics, approximately by 70 %. This new layout addresses a critical yet often neglected part of VCO design. Furthermore, a new concept has been proposed to optimize static dividers with respect to their power consumption and number of devices.

Design of Mixed-mode Adaptive Loop Gain Bang-Bang Clock and Data Recovery and Process-Variation-Resilient Current Mode Logic

As the volume of data processed by computers and telecommunication devices rapidly increases, high speed serial link has been challenged to maximize its I/O bandwidth with limited resources of channels and semiconductor devices. This trend requires designers’ relentless effort for innovations. The innovations are required not only at system level but also at sub-system and circuit level. This dissertation discusses two important topics regarding high speed serial links: Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) and Current Mode Logic (CML). This dissertation proposes a mixed-mode adaptive loop gain Bang-Bang CDR. The proposed CDR enhances jitter performances even if jitter spectrum information is limited a priori. By exploiting the inherent hard-nonlinearity of the Bang-Bang Phase Detector (BBPD), the CDR loop gain is adaptively adjusted based on a posteriori jitter spectrum estimation. Maximizing advantages of analog and digital implementations, the proposed mixed-mode technique achieves PVT insensitive and power efficient loop gain adaptation for high speed applications even in limited ft technologies. A modified CML D-latch improves CDR input sensitivity and BBPD performance. A folded-cascode-based Charge Pump (CP) is proposed to minimize CP latency. The effectiveness of the proposed techniques was experimentally demonstrated by various jitter performance tests. This dissertation also presents a process-variation-resilient CML. A typical CML requires over-design to meet the specification over the wide range of process parameter variations. To address this issue, the proposed CML employs a time-reference-based adaptive biasing chain with replica load. It adjusts a variable load resistor to simultaneously regulate time-constant, voltage swing, level-shifting and DC gain. The performance of the high speed building blocks such as Bang-Bang Phase Detectors, frequency dividers and PRBS generators can be more accurately regulated with the proposed CML approach. The prototype is fabricated to experimentally compare the process-variation-induced performance degradation between the conventional and the proposed CML. Compared to the conventional CML, the proposed architecture significantly reduces the performance degradation on divider self-oscillation frequency, PRBS generator speed and PRBS output jitters over the process-variation with only <3% additional power dissipation.

Base teórica: Apesar de o escore da soma das caixas da escala de avaliação clínica da demência (CDR-SB) ser amplamente utilizado, sua aplicabilidade na avaliação do estadiamento da gravidade da demência e sua acurária para detectar as categorias diagnósticas não foram normatizadas em várias partes do mundo, inclusive no Brasil. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a validade diagnóstica de CDR-SB na detecção e no estadiamento do comprometimento cognitivo e da demência em uma amostra de pacientes brasileiros com comprometimento cognitivo leve amnéstico (CCL amnéstico), doença de Alzheimer (DA) e demência vascular (DV). Métodos: Os dados foram obtidos a partir do banco de dados do ambulatório de demência do Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) e incluíram 407 participantes com idade superior a 50 anos (115 controles saudáveis, 41 pacientes com CCL amnéstico, 165 pacientes com DA e 86 pacientes com DV ou demência mista). Curvas ROC foram geradas para detectar os melhores pontos de cortes de CDR-SB. A escolaridade média foi 4 anos. Resultados: Um ponto de corte de CDR-SB ≥0,5 permite identificar corretamente indivíduos com CCL amnéstico de controles normais (sensibilidade de 100% e especificidade de 98,3%). Um ponto de corte ≥4,5 identifica corretamente os pacientes com CCL amnéstico dos pacientes com demência, todos juntos ou separadamente (DA e DV) (sensibilidade de 96,4% e especificidade de 100%) em 96,9% dos indivíduos. Os melhores intervalos de CDR-SB correspondentes aos escores globais de CDR foram de 0,5 a 4,0 para um escore global de 0,5; 4,5 a 8,0 para um escore global de 1,0; 8,5 a 14,0 para um escore global de 2,0; e 14,5 a 18,0 para um escore global de 3,0. Quando aplicados à amostra de validação, os escores variaram de 0,87 a 0,97. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the CDR-SB diagnostic validity in detecting and staging cognitive impairment/dementia in a sample of Brazilian patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VD). Methods: Data were obtained from the Dementia Clinic of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) database and included 407 participants (115 healthy controls, 41 aMCI, 165 AD and, 86 VD). Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated to detect best CDR-SB cutoffs. Average education was 4 years. Results: A CDR-SB cutoff ≥0.5 was obtained to correctly identify aMCI from normal controls (sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 98.3%). O estado de São Paulo produz cerca de 58.700 t/dia de resíduos dividido pelos seus 645 municípios nas vizinhanças de aproximadamente 170 usinas de açúcar e álcool. Diante deste fato, é evidente o potencial para se fazer o uso consorciado destes dois combustíveis na geração de energia. Este trabalho investigou os possíveis efeitos deletérios que a presença de cloro, flúor, sódio e potássio possam trazer nas caldeiras voltadas para a produção de energia elétrica, utilizando bagaço de cana e combustível derivado de resíduo (CDR). Foi realizada uma busca criteriosa na literatura internacional a fim de possíveis efeitos deletérios em caldeiras de biomassa para a produção de energia em razão do uso consorciado de resíduo, no aspecto da integridade da caldeira, principalmente no papel desempenhado pelos elementos, cloro, flúor, sódio e potássio, e em seguida uma análise criteriosa dos resultados encontrados. Esta análise foi realizada através de um estudo de caso, considerando uma caldeira de leito fluidizado borbulhante (BFB) de 60MW, queimando bagaço e parte do resíduo de uma cidade de 600.000 habitantes. Verificou-se que o resíduo que a cidade produz pode ser transformado em CDR que irá alimentar a caldeira como combustível auxiliar, produzindo energia elétrica de forma limpa e sustentável. Um parâmetro utilizado para se definir a quantidade máxima de CDR queimada na caldeira, foi o cloro específico, calculado pela razão entre o teor de cloro e o poder calorífico inferior (PCI) do combustível. Com base na literatura encontrada, limitou-se o cloro específico em 40 mg/MJ, para que não haja danos a integridade do equipamento. A combustão consorciada de bagaço de cana e CDR pode ser uma alternativa para o estado de São Paulo reduzir o problema da falta de aterros para descarte de resíduos e uma possibilidade para as usinas de açúcar e álcool produzirem energia elétrica por um período mais extenso no ano, economizando bagaço de cana. / The state of São Paulo produces about 58,700 tons/day waste divided by its 645 municipalities in the vicinity of about 170 sugar and alcohol mills. Given this fact, the potential is evident to make the consortium use of these two fuels in power generation. This paper investigated the potential deleterious effects that the presence of chlorine, fluoride, sodium and potassium can bring the boilers focused on the production of electric power using bagasse and refuse derived fuel (RDF). A thorough search in the international literature with the view to possible deleterious effects on biomass boilers for power generation because of consortium use of residue in the boiler integrity aspect, particularly the role played by the elements chlorine, fluorine, sodium and potassium, and then a careful analysis of the results. This analysis was conducted through a case study, considering a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler of 60 MW, burning bagasse and part of the residue of a city of 600,000 inhabitants. It was found that the residue that the city produces can be turned into RDF which will feed the boiler as an auxiliary fuel, producing electricity in a clean and sustainable manner. A parameter used to set the maximum amount of burned RDF in the boiler, was the specific chlorine, measured by the ratio between the chlorine content and the lower heating value (LHV) of the fuel. Based on the literature found, the specific chlorine was limited to 40 mg/MJ, so there is no damage to the integrity of the equipment. The consortium combustion of bagasse and RDF can be an alternative to the state of São Paulo reduce the problem of landfills for waste disposal and a possibility for the sugar and alcohol mills producing electric power for a longer period in the year, saving bagasse.

Artificial Integrity: Data Privacy and Corporate Responsibility in East Africa

While digital connectivity in East Africa is quickly increasing, the region is underregulated regarding data protection regulations. Moreover, many existing laws are more state-interest-focused than human rights-based. When comprehensive regulations are not in place, more significant regulatory pressure is put on the actors operating in the tech market. Theoretically and conceptually, this accountability can be described through conceptual models such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR).  Organisations use the two frameworks to map and manage their impact on society from an economic, environmental, and societal perspective. While CSR deals with their effects from a more general point of view, CDR has recently emerged in the business ethics discourse to discuss the ethical considerations evolving from the exponential growth of digital technologies and data.     Through a multiple case study design, the main objective of this study was to provide practical insight into how actors manage data privacy-related issues in East Africa. Furthermore, the aim was also to evaluate the existing barriers that prevent the actors from fully implementing higher data responsibility ambitions.   The results reveal that the observed actors are aware of the existing risks and mature enough to develop a comprehensive data responsibility agenda. However, there seems to be a gap between developing the policies and implementing them in practice. The lack of context-adjusted approaches to the CSR/CDR-related guidelines and actions can explain the gap.

LLC Resonant Current Doubler Converter

The telecommunications market is one of the large rapidly growing fields in today’s power supply industry due to the increasing demand for telecom distributed power supply (DPS) systems. The half-bridge LLC (Inductor-Inductor-Capacitor) resonant converter is currently the most attractive topology for the design and implementation of 24V/48V DC telecom power converters. The current doubler rectifier (CDR) converter topology was invented and described in the early 1950s which can offer the unique characteristic of halving the output voltage while doubling the output current compared to a standard rectifier. In this thesis, the current doubler converter topology with its unique characteristic is evaluated as a complementary solution to improve the LLC resonant converter performance, especially for the low output voltage and high output current telecommunication applications. A novel half-bridge LLC resonant current doubler converter (LLC-CDR) is proposed in this thesis which can offer several performance benefits compared to conventional LLC-standard rectifier design . The unique characteristics of the LLC-CDR topology can offer significant improvements by transformation of a 48V converter into a 24V converter with the same power density. This thesis introduces a new SPICE-based simulation model to analyse the operation of this novel LLC-CDR converter circuit design. This model can be used to define the critical component parameters for the LLC -CDR circuit output inductor values. It can also be used to predict the circuit overall performance under different load conditions. Both time-domain based transient simulation analysis and frequency-domain based AC analysis provided by this simulation model showed favourable results in comparison to bench measurement results on a prototype. The model provides a valuable insight to reveal some of the unique characteristics of this LLC -CDR topology. It demonstrates a proof of concept that the conventional LLC resonant converter can be easily redesigned for low voltage, high current applications by using the LLC-CDR topology without requiring a new design for the LLC resonant stage components and the power transformer. A new magnetic integration solution was proposed to significantly improve the overall performance in the LLC-CDR topology that had not been published before. The LLC-CDR converter hardware prototypes with two output inductors coupled and uncoupled configurations were extensively modelled, constructed and bench tested.Test results demonstrated the suitability of an integrated coupled inductors design for the novel LLC-CDR converter application. The integrated coupled inductors design can significantly improve the LLC-CDR converter frequency-domain based AC simulation analysis results. In addition, these results also illustrate the potential benefit of how the magnetic integration design in general could reduce the magnetic component size, cost, and weight compared to the uncoupled inductors design. Finally, a hardware prototype circuit was constructed based on a commercial 1800 W single phase telecom power converter to verify the operation of this novel half bridge LLC-CDR topology. The converter prototype successfully operated at both no load and full load conditions with the nominal output voltage halved from 48VDC to 24VDC, and doubled the output current to match the same output power density. It also demonstrates that the efficiency of this novel half bridge LLC –CDR is 92% compares to 90% of EATON’s commercial 24VDC LLC resonant converter, which can fulfill the research goals.

The work is aimed at finding appropriate methods for observing changes in the status of forest vegetation and its evaluation in the years 1992-2015. The satellite images of the Low Tatras are analyzed by using Time Series technology. Specifically, the images Landsat 4, 5, 7 and 8, for which it is necessary to perform a calibration and an adjustment of input data values to realize the individual vegetation indices, due to the fact that the images are captured by different sensors with different radiometric resolution. From this perspective, the work deals with the possibilities of normalized relative radiometric corrections and search for a particular type of appropriate compensation for Landsat CDR images. Calibrated data sets are evaluated by Time Series of different vegetation indices. The resulting values are evaluated in relation with the occurrence of forest disturbances, eg. wind storms, biological and other pests. The final part is discussion of the results, evaluating the test methods of calibration and suitability of vegetation indices for observing the state of calamity. The App is created for generating the Time Series of Landsat images CDR and for preparing RRN datasets. They must show how ordinary people can take advantage of this new technology. This is done by showing the possibilities of the new technology and by demonstrating applications that it will handle. The telecom industry must convince the telecom operators to invest in this technology and the only thing that matters to them is how much revenue they can make by adopting the upcoming technology. </p><p>To convince the operators industry must show how the operators can charge for the new types of applications that will be introduced soon. This is the main reason why this Master's Thesis has been conducted. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a demonstration to Ericsson's 3G lab in Katrineholm in the form of an IP application with a billing solution. This thesis describes the migration from 1G to 3G and examines existing and future billing strategies as well. </p><p>The IP application is an application that uses progressive streaming in order to stream multimedia content to a PDA connected to a 3G phone. This application is platform independent because it is placed on leading Web servers, Apache and IIS. </p><p>The billing application consists of a number of steps. The first step is logging, which is performed by the Web server on which the streaming application is placed. The second step, processing and billing, is performed in the BGw, which is Ericsson's mediation tool, and the SQL server.The third step is displaying the bill, which is done by using ASP to create an active HTML page.</p>
