Reliving the railroad

Rasmussen, Joshua Stephen 11 December 2013 (has links)
The Austin Steam Train Association operates a tourist train on a stretch of track in Texas from Cedar Park to Burnet. The diverse assortment of restored cars, some dating back to the 1920s, is pulled most-recently by a diesel engine, No. 442, as Southern Pacific No. 786, the original steam engine, is in the process of being repaired. The train requires more than $1 million annually to operate and would have folded long ago if not for an all-volunteer crew. ASTA staffs the crew of at least 10-15 people per train 105-110 times per year and has been doing so for more than 20 years. During a ride on the train, passengers see a wide variety of scenery, including some relics with historical significance. Among them are several large chunks of granite which fell of trains shuttling the stone decades ago from Marble Falls to Austin for the construction of the capitol building. Trains also carried granite to Galveston after the infamous hurricane hit. ASTA also provides entertainment inside the train. Themes rides sell out months in advance. Murder mystery trips are always hits but the Wine Flyer is gaining popularity. With a layover in Burnet on the Saturday Hill Country Flyers trips, passengers take time to explore a new city, have lunch and maybe do a little quick shopping. ASTA takes the operation of the train seriously and makes safety a priority. ASTA runs the train with fantastic dedication and perseverance and subsequently, generates a rolling work of history for study by families, first-timers and enthusiasts alike on a weekly basis. / text

Natural regeneration on clearcuts at the lower limit of the mountain hemlock zone

Klinka, Karel January 1997 (has links)
The Mountain Hemlock (MH) zone includes all subalpine forests along British Columbia’s coast. It occurs at elevations where most precipitation falls as snow and the growing season is less than 4 months long. The zone includes the continuous forest of the forested subzones and the tree islands of the parkland subzones (Figure 1). Old-growth stands are populated by mountain hemlock, Pacific silver fir, and Alaska yellow-cedar, and are among the least-disturbed ecosystems in the world. Canopy trees grow slowly and are commonly older than 600 years, while some Alaska yellow-cedars may be up to 2000 years old. Early regeneration failures followed slashburning and the planting of unsuitable species. Currently, the most successful and feasible option for reforesting cutovers is natural regeneration with a mix of the three main tree species, but uncertainties remain about the temporal and spatial pattern of regeneration, changes in species composition, and the time required for stand establishment after cutting. Our study addressed these concerns by examining regeneration patterns on 6 sites that were clearcut 11-12 years prior to sampling and left to regenerate naturally. The sites were located at the lower limits of the zone in the Tetrahedron Range, near Sechelt, at elevations from 1060-1100m.

New height growth models for western larch in British Columbia

Klinka, Karel, Brisco, David James, Nigh, Gordon D. (Gordon Donald), Chourmouzis, Christine January 2001 (has links)
Western larch (Larix occidentalis Nutt.) is a locally important species in the Nelson Forest Region, and to a lesser extent, in the Kamloops Forest Region. Its range extends from west of the Rockies to Okanagan Lake, and north to Salmon Arm, in the IDF, ICH, MS, and ESSF biogeoclimatic zones. Prior to this study, the site index curves developed for western larch in western Montana were used to model height and estimate site index in British Columbia. It has been suggested that these curves may not adequately reflect the height growth patterns of western larch in BC. Differences could arise from genetics, different methods of selecting sample trees, or climatic differences. The objective of this project was to produce accurate height growth models for western larch in BC.

Defining the character of the Cedar Street Historic District

Slocombe, Amy January 1994 (has links)
The Cedar Street Historic District, located in Manistee, Michigan, is a neighborhood that has retained many of its historic residences which serve as reminders of the city's heyday. Manistee, Michigan, located on Lake Michigan in the northwestern region of the lower peninsula, had a prosperous past as a major lumber manufacturing city. At the turn of the century, it was the third largest shipping port on the lake next to Milwaukee and Chicago. Manistee residents who made their fortunes in lumber built some of the finest houses in the region. A large majority of thoseresidences are located in the Cedar Street Historic District. Two of the mansions in the neighborhood were designed by the renowned Chicago School architect William LeBaron Jenney; unfortunately, they were razed in the 1920s.The boundaries of the district were determined in a preliminary survey of the architecture of the neighborhood. The survey, combined with the historical account of the area and its residents, shows that the Cedar Street Historic District is an excellent candidate for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, guidelines are included to show how the character of the district can be maintained. The possibility of the placement of the Cedar Street Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places may create more awareness of the city's additional historical resources. If the other historic businesses, residences, and public buildings in Manistee are surveyed and documented, there may be enough resources to merit the designation of a Multiple Resource Area. This may allow for greater protection of the city's historic properties. / Department of Architecture

Pesquisa do Estado do RJ, FAPERJ, Brasil. / The present study aimed to evaluate some limiting factors to the growth of Toona ciliata M. Roem. var. australis (Australian red cedar). In chapter I, it was evaluated the growth of Toona ciliata seedlings inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi (FMAs), Acaulospora laevis, A. morrowiae, Entrophospora colombiana, E. contigua, Gigaspora margarita, Glomus clarum, Scutellospora calospora, S. gilmorei, S. heterogama e S. pellucida. In chapter II, it was evaluated the contents and accumulations of nutrients in Australian red cedar seedlings, submitted the complete solution, diluted solution 1/2 and 1/4. In chapter III, it was verified the symptoms of macronutrients deficiency, nutrients contents and accumulations in the Australian red cedar plants submitted the complete solution with omission of N, P, K, Ca and Mg. Chapter IV, it was observed the reply of the species the aluminum presence, using treatments with complete solution diluted the 1/4 with addition of 0, 5 and 20 mg. L-1 de Al. Between AMF tested, A. morrowiae, E. contigua e S. pellucida were most efficient in promoting the accumulation of dry weight of aerial part, development of the area leaf and phosphorous content on leaf in Toona ciliata seedlings, beyond presenting the biggest densities of esporos.50 cm-3 of substrate. And the biggest incidence of mycorrhizae settling in Toona ciliata seedlings was gotten with the species S. pellucida. The behavior of the species in reply to the use of nutritional solutions complete and diluted 1/2 and 1/4, showed that the biggest increment in height, diameter and dry weight had occurred in plants submitted at diluted solution the 1/4. The macronutrients contents and accumulations in Australian red cedar plants presented the following decreasing order: N > K > Ca > P > Mg. With regard to nutritional deficiency it verified that the omission of K was the one that more affected the development of the plant in height. The limitation in the increment stem diameter of the plants occurred in all the treatments, with exception of the complete solution. The production of total weight dry of the plants was affected in all the treatments with omission of nutrients, in according the following decreasing order: Complete Solution > - P > - Mg > - N > - K > - Ca. The initial growth of Toona ciliata seedlings was affected by the omission of all the macronutrients, having been the similar symptoms with the symptoms of other species of the same family. The immediate damages most intense and had been observed in the omission of K and Ca. Thus, the Toona ciliata species demonstrated to be demanding in macronutrients in the following decreasing order: K > N > Mg > Ca > P. The reply of the species the aluminum presence demonstrated that the growth, nutrient content and accumulation in Australian red cedar plants were stimulated in the presence of 5mg.L-1 of aluminum. The addition of 20 mg.L-1 de Al reduced the growth of the plants and macronutrients accumulation, in the following decreasing order: Ca > Mg > N > P > K. The visual symptoms of fitotoxicity had been typical to this element, beyound of the leaf with intense green coloration progressing for the yellow; the leaves oldest had progressed for yellow-brown, the edges to the limb center; and curving of new leaves.

Psaume 92 : une étude exégétique / Psalm 92 : an exegetical study

Farescour, Michel 24 May 2016 (has links)
An analysis of the Hebrew text of psalm 92 is offered. Being a song, the first purpose of this work is to examine the poetic processes that it entails. The other focus pertains to the historical concerns of the poem, insofar as they determine its climate, the one that prevailed as it was composed, the circumstances of its origin, the date of composition and the identity of its author. A third pillar of the exegesis, close to the first one and in opposition to the second, is to study the text for its own sake without regard for its historical context. The structure of the text is scrutinized to, on the one hand, discover its technical beauty and on the other hand to see how it guides the reader towards an optimal understanding of the teaching of the poem. In plain: the characteristics of our work are twofold: 1) to be faithful to the historico-critical exegetic approach; 2) to bring a zest of modernity thanks to a structural analysis in the chapter on structure. Among the evidence-based results, we shall observe that the vegetal metaphor of burgeoning means that the just and the wicked have the right to live. However, if that of the just is restored, sustained and guaranteed by the divinity, the latter shall take no active part in the existence and retribution of the wicked.

A Mormon Melting Pot: Ethnicity Acculturation in Cedar City, Utah, 1880-1915

Leigh, Vida 01 January 1990 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis studies the ethnicity of the five ethnic groups found in Cedar City, Utah, during the 1880-to-1915 period. Those five groups were originally sent by Brigham Young to found the Iron Mission, as a two-fold project: (1) developing the iron mining industry, and (2) building a united community of Latter-day Saints. The demographics, kinship, ties, marriage patterns, occupations, wealth, and elites in church government and society have been examined in detail through US censuses, Iron county assessment records, marriage records, Cedar City municipal records, LDS church records, diaries, histories, and personal histories. By comparing all the ethnic groups within the community with each other, plus comparing them with groups in other communities in Utah and other US areas, the contribution of each group on the community can be measured, as can the impact of the environment and American Mormon church on the ethnic immigrants. All groups — American-born and foreign-born — developed a community united in its goals to build the kingdom and be mainstreamed into the American dream after Utah gained statehood in 1896.
