Gruber, Vilson January 2010 (has links)
This thesis presents the development of model system that can monitor, acquire, store and transmit data remotely using various sensors and 3G cellular network to be applied in the design of small wind turbines, aiming to generate a product that presents a cost-efficient through use of materials and manufacturing processes adapted to the reality world. The analysis of a cell phone record as a source of intelligence in the investigation of copper cable theft

Van Niekerk, Anna-Marie 02 1900 (has links)
Copper cable theft (CCT) has a devastating effect on the South African economy, and essential services such as TELKOM, ESKOM AND TRANSNET have been seriously disrupted, due to CCT. This dissertation focuses on the value of the cell phone record as a source of intelligence during (CCT) investigations. The cell phone industry is growing each year, and millions of people worldwide possess a cell phone. Some of these people are involved in criminal activities – which mean that cell phones, with their advanced capabilities, hold evidence which relates to crime. The activation of cell phone activity is contained on a cell phone record, and, when analysed, such information becomes intelligence which has a positive impact on CCT investigations. The purpose of this study is to assist and give guidance to investigators, in order to analyse the cell phone record(s) of CCT thieves. / Criminology and Security Science / M. Tech. This research presents a qualitative character and, among several forms of assuming this type of research, the procedure for data collection was chosen for case study. Because the object of study is found in real life, it cannot be investigated outside its context and it is very complex for experiments. Part of the research was conducted at a public school of Jataí-GO and the data collection used two questionnaires, logbook, spontaneous interview, document analysis of messages in WhatsApp and Facebook applications. The data processing was done in categories a posteriori, based on the ideas to construction of categories to analysis of content by Bardin. The categories elaborated were collaboration and cooperation in social networks, interaction and motivation in social networks, teaching and learning anytime, anywhere and some pedagogical obstacles. The research demonstrated the potential of ICTs in teaching and learning, a mobilization of the participating students, regarding collaboration and cooperation in daily activities related to school, and perceived in-group management, exchange of information and doubts about daily school activities. Changes in the interaction and motivation of the students were perceived, as during the activities, students could be encouraged to work on their work and evaluations when they realized that social networks would be a way of visibility of their work. The activities developed were able to modify the relations between students and teacher, bringing them closer, offering greater security to the student to deal with school subjects. In the pedagogical activities, the cell phone was a facilitator in the work of the teacher, either in the classroom or outside of it, in what concerns the direct contact with the students, acting in doubts, sending activities and information. Using the cell phone enabled the students the opportunity to develop a critical sense of the content available on the Internet, through research activities and production of content for sending in social networks. The activities developed in the Facebook application were responsible for encouraging students to strive in their school activities and became a means of publicizing the students' work. Some mishaps have been overcome in this research, such as the difficulty of relationship between participants, understanding the rules, difficulties in organizing work with ICTs and inadequate infrastructure. Nevertheless, mobile phones and social networks are alternatives for creating new forms of knowledge production, or for understanding the teaching and learning process, to assist in the critical development, learning and protagonist of the student, in activities that stimulate information on the Internet and transform it into knowledge.

Um estudo sobre o design, a implementação e a avaliação de interfaces flexíveis para idosos em telefones celulares / A research on design, implementation and evaluation of flexible interfaces for the elderly in mobile phones

Vinicius Pereira Gonçalves 16 April 2012 (has links)
The elderly population grows in Brazil and this fact increases the need to develop appropriate information and communication technologies to the public. As cell phones are getting cheaper, many families would like their elderly to be users of these devices aiming to have contact with them when they are out of their homes. However, the current cell phones design favors the younger people, not considering the different needs of the elderly population. At the most, even in the elderly population, there are differences regarding education, experience with technology, cognitive abilities and physical prowess. This dissertation argues for the design, implementation and evaluation of interfaces that are flexible to meet the diverse requirements of the elderly in the interaction with cell phones. One approach to the design of flexible user interfaces was applied in a case study and, considering the results of a practice with elderly users, a set of norms which define the design of the system flexible behavior was specified. This dissertation proposes and presents a framework that provides the interface reconfiguration during the interaction time, named FlexInterface. This framework addresses the concept of interface elements as components that are loaded, instantiated and destroyed when requested. Furthermore, this dissertation also brings an approachthat supports the evaluation of flexible interfaces for the elderly in mobile phones. The proposed analytical approach presents heuristics for this specific context of use. Finally, an assessment with elderly people was performed to verify the feasibility of the proposal. This study found that there was a reduction in the interaction time with the use of flexible interface and an increase in the users satisfaction

No. of bitstreams: 1 Adriane da Silva Higuchi.pdf: 1128917 bytes, checksum: 714bc33f2cde671ec6798d5668d8cc0d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-23 / The use of the mobile technology has caused several changes in all segments of society. Due to their being inserted in people s lives, the digital mobile devices cause changes in the way people communicate, interact, work, purchase, entertain and learn. In search for greater flexibility, convenience and mobility, society has increasingly taken control of the digital language and sets new characteristics on the sender-receiver, consumer-supplier, employee-employer, media-reader and even State citizen relationships. The so-called digital generation is born, grows, learns and lives being connected to a digital world full of ―rotating and mutant‖ pieces of information, available through mobile digital devices, like cell phones, net books, tablets, etc. Unlike past generations, today s one shows skills to browse through various web channels, all at the same time and on the go. In this context, education is not immune to the effects of the mobile technology as well. How does the appropriation of this technology occur in schools? How does the traditional education system perceive and cope with cell phones inside the classroom? What are the challenges? This research starts up an interdisciplinary reflection, which involves information technology, communication and education, in search for answers to these questions. Keeping focus on the mobile device, we seek to learn whether and how the school environment incorporates the mobile technology in its educational process. This research presents the exploratory study accomplished in a public school in the city of Mogi das Cruzes, located in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo, concerning students of the 9th year of the elementary school and 1st year of high school levels, using the mobile device as an aid in the pedagogical activities punctually and intermittently accomplished by the history teacher. The study shows and encourages thinking on how the mobile device is being incorporated as an apparatus to assist the pedagogical practice in the formal education environment / O uso da tecnologia móvel tem provocado mudanças em vários segmentos da sociedade.

A Case Study on How Chinese Students Use Their Cell Phones in Sweden Compared to That in China

Fang, Yuting January 2008 (has links)
This study focuses on cell phone usage. By comparing how a group of students use their cell phones in Sweden with that in China, alterant cell phone usage behaviors will be concluded. The study includes a case study. In order to do the research, the author selects a specific group and holds interviews. Three theories are used in this thesis which are: 1) mobile context, 2) switching behavior of mobile users and 3) transaction utility and reference situation. After introducing these three theories, the author concludes six theoretical factors which are combined into one competent framework. Base on the new framework, the author analyzes the result from the case study. After presenting the interview and the results, the author finds that Chinese students use their cell phones less frequent in Sweden compared to that in China. In order to find out the reasons, the author creates goal, emotion, fee, location and habit as the five matching factors which result in those changes. The matching factors are the bridge between the theories and the case study. After generalizing how those factors affect people while using cell phones, future work is to raise up some thoughts of how cell phones will be like in the future which is relevant to how to adapt information technology to human lives.

A framework for responsive content adaptation in electronic display networks

West, Philip January 2006 (has links)
Recent trends show an increase in the availability and functionality of handheld devices, wireless network technology, and electronic display networks. We propose the novel integration of these technologies to provide wireless access to content delivered to large-screen display systems. Content adaptation is used as a method of reformatting web pages to display more appropriately on handheld devices, and to remove unwanted content. A framework is presented that facilitates content adaptation, implemented as an adaptation layer, which is extended to provide personalization of adaptation settings and response to network conditions. The framework is implemented as a proxy server for a wireless network, and handles HTML and XML documents. Once a document has been requested by a user, the HTML/XML is retrieved and parsed, creating a Document Object Model tree representation. It is then altered according to the user’s personal settings or predefined settings, based on current network usage and the network resources available. Three adaptation techniques were implemented; spatial representation, which generates an image map of the document, text summarization, which creates a tree view representation of a document, and tag extraction, which replaces specific tags with links. Three proof-of-concept systems were developed in order to test the robustness of the framework. A system for use with digital slide shows, a digital signage system, and a generalized system for use with the internet were implemented. Testing was performed by accessing sample web pages through the content adaptation proxy server. Tag extraction works correctly for all HTML and XML document structures, whereas spatial representation and text summarization are limited to a controlled subset. Results indicate that the adaptive system has the ability to reduce average bandwidth usage, by decreasing the amount of data on the network, thereby allowing a greater number of users access to content. This suggests that responsive content adaptation has a positive influence on network performance metrics.

Service quality perceptions in the Uganda mobile telephone branch of industry

Byarugaba, Jotham Mbiito January 2010 (has links)
Standard practice dictates that mobile telephone service providers remain accurately aligned with the dynamic expectations structure of the target mobile telephone service users they serve. To comply with this requirement, literature sources assert that service providers need to adopt a candid marketing research orientation to understand what the users expect and in-build it in their service designs. Theory further contends that if such a business stance is diligently applied, any service provider is bound to gain a competitive edge in the market place. Notwithstanding the aforementioned, service providers continue design services without sufficient understanding of what users expect. This mindset has led to disparities in both the designed and the recieved service. Despite the pioneering works of earlier reserachers on the Gaps model, evidence shows that no research had been carried out to measure users' and providers' service quality perceptions in the mobile telephone branch of industry in Uganda. Much remains unknown as regards users' perceptions of expected and actual service quality and any potential disparity thereof. In the same spirit, much remains unknown as regards providers' perceptions of users' expectations and users' real expectations and potential disparity thereof. In order to measure the aforementioned disparities, the Gaps model was used in which Gaps 1 and 5 were measured for providers and users of mobile telephone services in the branch industry in Uganda.

Socio-environmental factors associated with self-rated oral health : a mixed effects model

Olutola, Bukola Ganiyat 21 May 2012 (has links)
Background : Studies of self-rated oral health are always done at either the individual level or the aggregate level. Partitioning individual and neighbourhood sources of variation also enables explorations of the influences of people’s social context on their self-rated oral health. Objective : The main objective of the study was to examine the influence of the social context in which people live on their self-rating of their oral health, independent of individual indicators of good oral health. Method : This study used a secondary analysis of data on a nationally representative sample of 2 907 South African adults (aged ≥ 16 years) who had participated in the 2007 annual South African Social Attitude Survey (SASAS). The 2007 SASAS used a multi-stage probability sampling strategy, with census enumeration areas as the primary sampling unit. Using an interviewer-administered questionnaire, the information obtained included socio-demographic data, the respondents’ level of trust in people (a proxy measure for social capital), oral health behaviours and self-rated oral health. Using the 2005 General Household Survey (GHS) (persons’ n=107 987; households’ n=28 129), the living environment characteristics of participants of the SASAS were obtained, including sources of water and energy supply and household cell phone ownership as a proxy measure for social networking. A mixed-effects model was then constructed to determine factors associated with a self-rating of oral health as ‘very good/good’. Results : Of the respondents, 51.7% were female. Among the respondents, 76.3% self-rated their oral health as good. There was a significant gender modifying effect, thus analyses was stratified by gender. The odds of self-rating oral health as good was significantly higher only among females living in areas with higher household cell phone ownership density, even after controlling for potential confounders. At the individual level, trust was positively associated with good self-rated oral health only among males, and higher social ranking in the society was positively associated with good self-rated oral health only among females. Overall, 55% of the total variance in self-rated oral health was explained by factors operating at the individual level, whereas 18% of the total variance was explained by factors operating at the community level. Self-report of recent oral health problems such as toothache and oral malodour were significantly associated with lower odds of self-rating their oral health as good, as was with reporting less frequent brushing. Conclusion : Good self-rated oral health may be positively associated with indicators of higher levels of social capital both at the level of the individual and the community and with less physical impairments of oral functioning. Furthermore, the findings indicate that unlike men’s oral health ratings, women’s oral health ratings are more likely to be influenced by women’s social relationships with others in the society.
