Have a part in your kids’ lives and be engaged: parent-adolescent cell phone communicationFalcon Campos, Isaac Cruz Joel January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Family Studies and Human Services / Karen Myers-Bowman / Today more and more teenagers are adopting cell phone communication as the primary way to communicate with their peers and parents (Lenhart, Ling, Campbell, & Purcell, 2010). Literature is vast on the negative use of cell phones by teenagers such as sexting and bullying (e.g., Draper, 2012) and on the negative implications it has on them and their relationships with peers (e.g., D'Antona, Kevorkian & Russom, 2010). However, it is very limited in exploring how cell phone use affects parent-adolescent communication. To investigate this question, ten parent-adolescent dyads who have used cell phones for more than six months participated in 25-40 minute interviews consisting of 14 open-ended questions about how they use cell phones to communicate. The teenagers’ ages ranged from 14 to 18 years of age and the average age of the teenagers was 16.6 years. Transcripts of interviews were analyzed for main themes. I found that parents and teenagers text each other more than call each other. They use cell phones to communicate for practical reasons, such as safety/checking in with each other, as well as for relational reasons, such as staying in touch with each other at a distance and sharing fun information with each other. These devices help the parents and adolescents be available to each other, facilitate quick yet flexible response times, and allow parents to teach responsibility. However, they also face challenges of overuse, which can hinder parent-adolescent communication, and can lead to miscommunication. The results of this study can be used by Family Life Educators to help new parent and teen cell phone users to learn about the benefits of cell phones as well as some of the expected challenges and help them get the most out of their cell phone communication.

The analysis of a cell phone record as a source of intelligence in the investigation of copper cable theftVan Niekerk, Anna-Marie 02 1900 (has links)
Copper cable theft (CCT) has a devastating effect on the South African economy, and essential services such as TELKOM, ESKOM AND TRANSNET have been seriously disrupted, due to CCT. This dissertation focuses on the value of the cell phone record as a source of intelligence during (CCT) investigations. The cell phone industry is growing each year, and millions of people worldwide possess a cell phone. Some of these people are involved in criminal activities – which mean that cell phones, with their advanced capabilities, hold evidence which relates to crime. The activation of cell phone activity is contained on a cell phone record, and, when analysed, such information becomes intelligence which has a positive impact on CCT investigations. The purpose of this study is to assist and give guidance to investigators, in order to analyse the cell phone record(s) of CCT thieves. / Criminology and Security Science / M. Tech. Work/Life Balance and Smartphones: Can a Smartphone make a difference?Bomber, Kristin January 2010 (has links)

This thesis examines the relationship between work/life balance and Smartphones (Blackberry, iPhone, Android etc.)

Academic research has areas where not much research has been done previously including the qualitative research on work/life balance, positive crossover of work/life balance, newness of Smartphone technology, and consequences of constant connectivity. This study hopes to eliminate some of the gaps in these areas of research and proposes two research questions: So what does owning a Smartphone mean for work life and home life? Most importantly can this phone help people towards or assist with the balance they are so looking for or do the phones not impact this balance and just assist in the work life and home life realms separately?

A qualitative approach using constructionist and interpretivist views were used to conduct the research. Empirical material was collected during phone interviews with participants in the USA, while supporting material was gathered from conference papers, academic articles, websites, and textbooks.

There are two major themes within this paper, work/life balance and Smartphone technology. For work/life balance a common understanding was reached that work and personal life should be kept happy but that doesn’t mean equal. Also discussed is research about people that put up boundaries in their lives to try and separate things, one group of people likes to have work and personal separate but one group likes them combined. Research also presents that there are consequences for setting up boundaries but that having the ability to choose where these boundaries are makes for a much happier situation. On the technology side of research there is support for these devices being used to manage people’s different selves through communication from being more connected to people to feeling left out when the technology is not there. Also mentioned is how people adapt the devices to fit new and unique situations that the devices may not have been intended to be used for.

Human capital investment and innovation success in the telecoms sector in South AfricaTshabuse, Abraham Takalani January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and
Management, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the
requirements for the degree of Master of Management specialising in
Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation.
Wits Business School, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
(March 2017) / Innovation is one of the core and key characteristics of entrepreneurship, which
stimulates operational and financial success of a firm. Innovation is ambidextrous
in nature, characterised by exploration and exploitation. This report is concerned
with exploitative innovation, which is characterised by new; products, services,
and processes. This Research Report investigates how human capital
investments (years of schooling and years of work experience of telecoms firms’
senior managers and executives) relate to innovation performance. This paper
uses the human capital theory and the resource base theory to understand the
perceived impact of human capital investments on performance and also its
perceived moderation effect on the nexus between innovation and performance.
Research findings from 81 senior management and executives of four major
telecoms firms in South Africa indicate that innovation has a perceived direct
impact on the perceived success of the firm. However, a counterintuitive
relationship of human capital investments with performance is observed.
Furthermore, human capital investments have a counterintuitive moderating
effect on the nexus between innovation and performance. Therefore, this
research report discusses human capital variable configurations that are more
likely to have a perceived impact on a telecoms firm performance, and human
capital variable configuration that are likely to have a moderating effect on the
nexus between innovation and performance. / MT2017

[en] JESUS CHRIST, THE PRINCE OF PEACE: A THEOLOGICAL-PASTORAL STUDY OF BIBLICAL PEACE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PERSON AND THE MESSAGE OF JESUS CHRIST / [pt] JESUS CRISTO, PRÍNCIPE DA PAZ ESTUDO TEOLÓGICO-PASTORAL DA PAZ BÍBLICA E SUA RELAÇÃO COM A PESSOA E A MENSAGEM DE JESUS CRISTOMARCIO HENRIQUE DA SILVA RIBEIRO 12 September 2003 (has links)
[en] Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, is a theological study
of the theme of the Biblical peace, centering on its
relationship with the person and the message of Jesus
Christ. It summarizes evangelical requirements of an Ethics
and of a pastoral action committed to the building of
peace. The interest in the study of Biblical peace has its
foundations on the fact that peace - a desire of the
various peoples throughout history - is present in the
Biblical texts when they speak of God`s relationship to
humanity and of His salvation project. Departing from an
analysis of certain texts of the Old one the New Testament
this work tries systemize all the richness and complexity
of the theme of Biblical peace. Its main objective is to
show how the event Jesus Christ gives a new meaning to
this theme. In His person and in His message rests the full
meaning of what Biblical peace is, since it is contained in
the very process of the Revelation of the face of
God, the Father, and in the announcement and establishment
of His Kingdom as well. In this fashion, this dissertation
shows that a Theology and a Christian Ethics of peace have
their foundation on the person and on the message of Jesus
Christ.

Um estudo sobre o design, a implementação e a avaliação de interfaces flexíveis para idosos em telefones celulares / A research on design, implementation and evaluation of flexible interfaces for the elderly in mobile phonesGonçalves, Vinicius Pereira 16 April 2012 (has links)
The elderly population grows in Brazil and this fact increases the need to develop appropriate information and communication technologies to the public. As cell phones are getting cheaper, many families would like their elderly to be users of these devices aiming to have contact with them when they are out of their homes. However, the current cell phones design favors the younger people, not considering the different needs of the elderly population. At the most, even in the elderly population, there are differences regarding education, experience with technology, cognitive abilities and physical prowess. This dissertation argues for the design, implementation and evaluation of interfaces that are flexible to meet the diverse requirements of the elderly in the interaction with cell phones. One approach to the design of flexible user interfaces was applied in a case study and, considering the results of a practice with elderly users, a set of norms which define the design of the system flexible behavior was specified. This dissertation proposes and presents a framework that provides the interface reconfiguration during the interaction time, named FlexInterface. This framework addresses the concept of interface elements as components that are loaded, instantiated and destroyed when requested. Furthermore, this dissertation also brings an approachthat supports the evaluation of flexible interfaces for the elderly in mobile phones. The proposed analytical approach presents heuristics for this specific context of use. Finally, an assessment with elderly people was performed to verify the feasibility of the proposal. This study found that there was a reduction in the interaction time with the use of flexible interface and an increase in the users satisfaction

Previous issue date: 2012-02-24 / One of the most serious environmental problems is the proper management of
solid waste. The early obsolescence of electronics because of technological
advances and the growth of sales volume of mobile phone including the informal
sector contribute to increase the amount of waste generated. Disposal of mobile
phone batteries in household waste represents loss to the environment, because
of toxic elements composition, if are accommodated in landfills or land, represent
health and environmental impact causing the contamination of people, animals,
and ground sheets water tables. The Brazilian legislation defines shared
responsibility for the lifecycle of the product and reverse logistics as a tool for
reducing environmental impact. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the
knowledge of the mobile phone vendors in the informal market about
environmental legislation for disposal of batteries, diagnose the social
responsibility of those vendors related to hazardous wastes and finally, identify if
there practice of reverse logistics process. The methodology used was Case
Study in degree compared between two popular markets managed by the private
entity and the government office. The research is exploratory and descriptive order
through a literature review and field research. The respondents for the research
were the sellers of mobile phone that working in two popular markets and the data
were collected through semi-structured interview. The results show that there is
little consumer participation in the process of discarding cell phone batteries that
100% of the respondents have no knowledge about the legislation for disposal of
cell phone batteries and that vendors don t have co-responsible behave in the
reverse logistics process for the environmentally disposal of cell phone batteries.
Therefore, it is recommended environmental education as a tool to give
information to promote change in the behavior of users and mobile phone vendors
in the informal market in Goiânia.
A legislação
A metodologia utilizada

This thesis presents the development of model system that can monitor, acquire, store and transmit data remotely using various sensors and 3G cellular network to be applied in the design of small wind turbines, aiming to generate a product that presents a cost-efficient through use of materials and manufacturing processes adapted to the reality world. It presented a new model system for data acquisition based on the integration of new information technologies and communication and processing techniques of analog and digital signals, to study the performance of parameters generated in a small wind turbine bench and remote. Through this model will be possible to monitor continuously, within the ranges provided for sampling, the occurrence of changes of parameters measured by sensors installed in the turbine. The results of analysis of these sensors can be acquired and transmitted remotely via the 3G network, directly to an operating room or be available on the Web with new technologies and social media. The information studied here show results that may be useful for any market segment and for all scientific, economic and environmental issues, willing to learn and apply the model of an acquisition system and data monitoring for management of small wind turbines. Although the experiment has been used variables of a wind turbine, are shown other possible applications of data acquisition, remote monitoring and experiments using the 3G mobile communication channel and the integration of new information technologies and communication.
