Wireless Application DevelopmentMujib, Rahat M. 01 January 2004 (has links)
Wireless Application Development has become a major area of research in recent times. With the increasing availability of wireless technologies such as cellular, Bluetooth, Infrared etc. it has become essential to develop applications that suit the various types of hardware that support such wireless technologies. The goal of this thesis is to explore the motivations behind application development methodologies and the tools associated with it, for small mobile devices that employ cellular technologies. Due to extremely high demand of cell phones among people who have over the years become extra mobile, there has been a trend of decreasing costs for users for the last several years. As more people start using these devices every day the demand for support of various applications and services are on the rise. This thesis will explore the leading application development tools and technologies for small mobile devices WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) and some others. This thesis will also take a brief look into cellular network technology termed 3G, in terms of its usefulness for applications developed using the aforementioned technologies. The thesis includes the development of a J2ME application using a wireless device emulator.

Redução da taxa de queda de chamada em rede celular GSM por meio de ajustes dos parâmetros de cobertura / Reducing the rate of fall call GSM mobile network by means of adjustment of parameters of coveragePivaro, Gabriel Fernando 16 May 2008 (has links)
A study about the main causes of dropped calls in mobile network cell GSM is made by means of statistical traffic analysis. The aim is to minimize the effect of these causes through coverage parameters changes, such as dynamical potency control, coverage border between cells, correct definition of neighboring cells. The reduction of dropped call rate by means of optimization of coverage parameters, changed via remote commands, eliminates costs with physical changes, such as the height of the antennas and installation of new radio base station. Parameter changes, however, must be carefully made because they can degrade other indicators and bring coverage area and traffic reduction. The two main causes of dropped call are sudden loss of connection, due to failure in the equipment used, behavior of subscribers and the failure in handover and drops due to the low signal strength in the air interface. In this study, based on statistical data of GSM traffic, a cell operating in 900 MHz that presented high dropped call rate was chosen. Adjusting the coverage parameters, the monthly dropped call rate went from 8.6% to 1.6% and there wasn\'t any degradation of any other performance indicators.

Previous issue date: 2010-03-02 / With the objective of better understanding the cell phone as a device for cinematographic contents, or simply cine mobile, and in an attempt to get a glimpse of future possibilities for this new medium, this essay compares it with the origins of cinema, the very first actual steps of the illusion of movement, and more specifically with the Mutoscope. And this comparison is not limited to these two technological devices that are representative of two distinct historical periods. The products, a sequence of photograms in the mutoscope s case, and movies in the cell phone s case, and their contours, as well as the socio-cultural background of both ages, shall also be compared, in an attempt to find parallels and divergences between these two devices for moving pictures. In order to help understanding the scope of such possible parallels and divergences, as well as to shed light on the path of possibilities forcinema and mobile telephony, two experts were interviewed, each from a distinct area of expertise (one is a filmmaker, the other is a businessman in the telephony industry). Ultimately, the new questions that are asked are more important than the questions that are answered, for it is the former ones that will further fuel the debate.

Previous issue date: 2010-03-19 / The aim of this project is to identify and analyze the impacts of mobile telephone use in society. It was observed that use of this device can strengthen relationships through the exchange of information between users by means of photos, videos, text messages and phone calls. The mobile phone has proven to be a key element in ubiquitous computing and what differentiates it from other mobile devices is the fact that it can combine a number of features in one super-portable piece of equipment. Mobile phones are an efficient tool for coordinating activities. The possibility of rescheduling commitments in real-time, during breaks between one activity and another, can transform the experience of time according to researchers. The addition of localization systems to this device allowed new methods of appropriating physical space, especially in urban centers. The consequences of being available any time, any place, were also discussed. There are two movements going in opposite direction: although we have our entire social network available, at the same time, we become more vulnerable to those who wish to find us. This study is the result of reading the work of authors who analyzed the social changes occurring due to the advances in the development of smart technologies such as Pierre Levy and Manuel Castells. The issue of the impact caused by the use of mobile phones was discussed based on the research by Lucia Santaella, André Lemos, Adriana Souza e Silva, Richard Ling and Howard Rheingold / Este trabalho tem por objetivo apontar e analisar os impactos do uso do telefone celular na vida em sociedade.

Mobiltelefonen som social artefakt inom familjen : en studie med föräldrarna i fokus / The Cell Phone as a social artefact within the family : a study focused on parentsNemback, Joakim January 2008 (has links)
<p>Studies of modern communication media such as Cell Phones and so called Instant Messengers are popular today. This study focused on these modern techniques, focused on parents as a target group and on what is important for them in everyday communication.</p><p>By exploratory using three focus groups it became clear that the children, and the link to them was the absolute most important thing for the parents. It became clear that this link to a great extent today exists through the mobile phone.</p><p>In a following study a Mobile Instant Messenger called My Friends was introduced. It was used by two families during two weeks to see how it would change the communication within the family. The focus was to see how problems with availability were handled, it turned out that:</p><p>My friends had a more obvious way of indicating availability than the Cell Phone had. It was also consulted before making contact through other media.</p><p>Emphasis was also put to find out what kind of communication the different media; phone call (Cell Phone), texting and Instant Messenger supports. It showed that three variables seemed to be important when choosing media:</p><p>• the haste of the business</p><p>• the goal of the business</p><p>• the need for precision</p><p>The bigger knowledge two people had of each other the more the latter was affected but the first two were unaffected.</p> / <p>Studier av moderna kommunikationsmedia som mobiltelefonen och så kallade Instant Messengers är populära idag.

Mobiltelefonen som hjälpmedel för vuxna med ADHD / The Mobile Phone as Assistive Technology for Adults with ADHDHallberg, Pernilla January 2009 (has links)

Efficient multiuser cooperative relay communications employing layered modulationsWhang, Roderick Jaehoon 22 September 2011 (has links)
Relay-assisted cooperative communications are promising solutions for error-performance improvement and cell coverage extension. In this thesis, we propose several efficient cooperative relay communication schemes. First, an efficient space-time coded cooperative relay communications scheme that employs linear precoding and transmission-pattern selection is proposed. This is built upon an existing block linear precoding technique for conventional multiple-input multiple-output systems in order to improve the diversity performance of a multihop relay network. Second, we consider several multiuser cooperative relay
communication schemes employing layered modulations, such as hierarchical modulation and superposition coding. Conventional cooperative relay communication is effective in mitigating fading effects. However, additional resources, such as time slots or frequency bands are required for the relay, which reduce the overall throughput. Reduction of throughput will become more severe as the number of users increases. In order to overcome this limitation, multiuser cooperative relaying schemes that employ hierarchical modulation and superposition coding are proposed. These schemes exploit the superimposed message for users in the network and allow the system to transmit two or more independent data streams simultaneously. The proposed schemes do not require additional resources than the conventional schemes, while improving the error performance by flexibly controlling the power division coefficient of superposition coding or the distance parameter of hierarchical modulation. / Graduation date: 2012 / Access restricted to the OSU Community at author's request from Sept. 28, 2011 - Sept. 28, 2012

Visual balance in engineering design for aesthetic valueMokarian, Mohammad Ali 14 May 2007
The aesthetic aspect of a functional product is growing to be an important reason for the consumers choice to buy the product. Despite this importance, aesthetics has not generally been incorporated into engineering design which makes much sense of functional and ergonomic designs. The study presented in this thesis aims to remedy this observed gap. The study focuses on the integration of aesthetic attributes with functional attributes of a product and on the quantification of the aesthetic principle from fine arts into design variables of the product. In particular, two hypotheses underlie this study: (1) design variables can be classified in terms of their relevance to functional, ergonomic, and aesthetic attributes, and (2) a particular aesthetic principle, namely visual balance, helps to achieve an improved aesthetic product.<p>The cell phone is used to ground this study. A statistic experiment using the cell phone product positively tests the first hypothesis, resulting in two design variable which are only related to the aesthetic attribute of the cell phone product. The study of the visual balance principle results in a more general formula which relates design variables to visual balance with consideration of both geometry and color of the cell phone product. Finally, another statistic experiment is designed, which positively tests the second hypothesis.<p>This study concludes: (1) the effective integration of aesthetics with function and ergonomics requires an analysis and classification of design variables, and (2) there is a potential to quantify all aesthetic principles from fine arts into design variables.
