<em>Two from the Underworld</em>: Short Fiction.

The following thesis contains two works of short fiction. The first, “Afterlife,” is narrated by Jeff Carlton, whose unenthusiastic passage into fatherhood is complicated by his girlfriend Charlene’s obsession with mummification. The second, “Jolly,” is the story of Calvin Edwards, a young bus station attendant haunted by his father’s ghost and visited by a cadaverous stranger, Jolly, who also sees the dead. The stories are preceded by an introduction in which the author discusses his views on implied motivation in character development.

The Relationship Between Faculty-Led Small Groups and Character Development of Seminarians in an Evangelical Seminary

The problem for this study was the relationship between faculty-led small groups and the development in seminary students of the character traits biblically mandated of those who occupy spiritual leadership positions in the church (1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9). This experimental study developed and assessed a program which combined involvement in a small group of peers with a faculty mentor. The discipleship groups met weekly for two semesters for either thirty or seventy-five minutes. The research instrument used was the Biblical Leadership Qualities Inventory, a revision of the Spiritual Leadership Qualities Inventory. The longer treatment length groups were not found to differ significantly from the shorter treatment length groups for change in trait score (p = .281), although means were generally lower for the longer groups. A MANOVA showed that both treatment groups differed significantly from the control group for the traits observed (p < .001) with the general direction of change being to a lower trait score. Five post-hoc hypotheses were investigated. An education effect, as measured by number of traits studied in the group, was not found to be related to outcome. A fatigue or stress effect, as measured by academic load, work load, and marital status, was not found to be related to outcome. Instrument weakness, peer effect, and mentor effect were suggested as possible explanations for the outcome. Peer and mentor relationships may have resulted in the subjects developing higher standards and thus a decrease on the posttest. Demographic factors of marital status, Christian age, academic load, work load, and absences did not prove to be effective predictors of outcome. Neither faculty trait scores nor faculty fidelity to the topics for discussion in the treatment groups proved to be an effective predictor of student outcome. Previous research by Parker showing factors for the SLQI was not replicable and thus the factors were not found to be reliable.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the actor's process in tackling the roles of Harry Dalton in Equus by Peter Shaffer, Duke Senior in As You Like It by William Shakespeare, and Dionysus in The Bacchae by Euripedes. Each production is assigned its own chapter, respectively. The chapters explore each role vocally, psychologically, and physically, including the examination of the Alexander Technique. Reflection on the experience of portraying the character and an evaluation of the actor's growth also transpires. The fourth chapter, Finding My Light, summarizes related observations and analysis as a result of performing all three roles. Finally, the fifth chapter, Curtain Call: A Tableau of Contemplation, deliberates on three years of graduate education. It features the benefits and shortcomings realized as a result of participating as one of the first students the Professional Studio Acting Track of Virginia Commonwealth University.

No nascimento da modernidade houve um grande crescimento produtivo, o que levou ao incremento das instituições mediadoras da vida social. Os efeitos disso na esfera do discurso e da formação do sujeito se manifestaram também no teatro, na formação dos personagens. A passagem de uma mentalidade mítica para uma racionalista marcou os sujeitos, muitas vezes, de forma trágica, dilacerados entre demandas desencontradas e discursos opostos. A subjetividade se tornou o campo desse tipo de batalha. Um exemplo privilegiado desse momento é The Spanish Tragedy, de Thomas Kyd. Tragédia inaugural do teatro elisabetano, Kyd foi o primeiro autor a concentrar a maioria de seus monólogos em um único personagem, contrastando com peças anteriores, como Gorboduc, em que os monólogos eram mais distribuídos. Isso possibilitou uma concentração de tensão e um desenvolvimento dramatúrgico que influenciou gerações, inclusive um jovem dramaturgo iniciante chamado William Shakespeare. Não é apenas uma coincidência que Kyd tenha inaugurado com sua peça um gênero, as tragédias de vingança, que criou uma longa linhagem, cujo representante mais ilustre é Hamlet. Mas esse desenvolvimento concentrado, que permitiu um crescendo ao longo da peça, se olhado de perto, apresenta uma outra dimensão. A fatura linguística dos monólogos traz materiais das mais diversas fontes. Se estão presentes recursos linguísticos da literatura clássica e da retórica da corte, também aparece uma dicção provinda da burguesia, seja das controvérsias religiosas, seja dos livros de cortesão, que discutiam o comportamento adequado em sociedade. Temos, portanto, recursos textuais provenientes dos atores sociais que tencionavam a época: aristocracia decadente e burguesia ascendente. Vistos em sequência, os monólogos apresentam uma transição das formas mais tradicionais e conservadoras de discurso para as mais modernas. Dessa forma, o desenvolvimento do personagem e a estrutura dramatúrgica construída em torno dele se tornam um espelho de sua época. A mesma tensão que vemos no grande quadro da história, se fecharmos o foco sobre o personagem e, mais ainda, sobre sua interioridade, nos monólogos, reaparece nas suas formas de discurso. Ao fazer um panorama histórico, uma descrição da evolução do personagem e um exame detalhado de momentos-chave de seus monólogos, esperamos demonstrar esses nexos. / In the birth of modernity, there was a great productive growth, which led to the increase of institutions mediating social life. The effects of this situation in the sphere of social discourse and in the formation of the subjects also manifested themselves in the theater, in the formation of the characters. The transition from a mythical mentality to a rationalist one marked the subjects, often tragically, torn between disjointed demands and opposed discourses. Subjectivity became the battlefield of this type of struggle. A prime example of this moment is The Spanish Tragedy, by Thomas Kyd. Kyd was the first author to concentrate most of his monologues on a single character, contrasting with earlier plays such as Gorboduc, where the monologues were more widely distributed. This enabled a concentration of tension and a dramaturgical development that influenced generations, including a young beginner playwright named William Shakespeare. It is not only a coincidence that Kyd inaugurated, with his play, a genre, the revenge tragedy, which created a long lineage, the most illustrious representative being Hamlet. But this concentrated development, which allowed a crescendo throughout the play, if looked closely, presents another dimension. The linguistic making of the monologues brings materials from the most diverse sources. If linguistic resources of classical literature and court rhetoric are present, there is also a diction from the bourgeoisie, whether from the religious controversies or from the court books, which discussed proper behavior in society. Therefore, we have textual resources coming from the social actors who confronted each other in that era: decadent aristocracy and rising bourgeoisie. Viewed in a sequence, the monologues show a transition from the more traditional and conservative forms of discourse to the more modern ones. In this way, the development of the character and the dramatic structure built around him become a mirror of his time. The same tension that we see in the great picture of history, if we close the focus on the character, even more, on his interiority, in the monologues, reappears in his forms of discourse. Making a historical overview, a description of the development of the character and a detailed examination of moments of his monologues, we hope to demonstrate these links.

Traz alguns conceitos e definições sobre o trabalho do ator, abordados nesta pesquisa. Propõe um breve encontro com encenadores que buscam motivações diversas em suas propostas de criação cênica e que se aproximam de alguma forma do objetivo desta. Apresenta a experiência prática sobre o processo de composição das personagens do texto “A Filha do Teatro”, de Luís Augusto Reis. Tece considerações sobre os caminhos escolhidos, sobre a repercussão da proposta na criação artística do ator e sobre encaminhamentos futuros. / The object of study of this dissertation is the process of the composition of the theatrical character having paintings as a motivation for a physical and emotional mobilization of the actor that made part of this research, in their cultivation moment. The text presents some concepts about the actor process, adressed in this research. It proposes a brief encounter with theater artists that search different motivations in their scenic developing proposals that are closer to the objective of this paper. It presents a practical experience about the character developing of the play "A filha do teatro", by Luís Augusto Reis. It evolves considerations about paths chosen and about the repercutions in the artistic creation and future referrals.

Character Development and its Utilization for Convergent Media Formats

The thesis caters to the demands of the creative industries for products and contents which can be utilized for convergent media usage and cross-marketing strategies. In this regard character design serves as an important element of entertainment franchises since it is a means to produce media content with high recognition value. However, numerous character adaptations in different media formats illustrate that characters who are successful in one medium are not necessarily as successful in another media format. The thesis takes a closer look at characters in the context of media convergence and discusses the main principles of character creation and development. By favoring a heuristic approach which analyzes the aesthetic phenomena of arts and entertainment by the means of theoretical research which is supported by practical examples, the thesis concludes that character development is based on three dimensions which have to be combined in order to create characters which can be utilized for different media formats. In this context the work discusses character creation in writing, visuals and interactive media by focusing on ways which secure the successful transfer of characters into different media formats without a loss of character depth and quality.

Game, Set and Cohesion : A case study of sport for social cohesion in Timor Leste

This thesis addresses how sports can encourage social cohesion amongst youth in Dili, Timor Leste. It is a case study, conducted in Timor Leste and is based on interviews with staff working at organizations that offer sport for peace programs as well as with other interested parties. The sport for peace programs involves youth in and around Dili and were initiated as a peace-building method. The communication aspect is analyzed through a participatory communication approach. The thesis investigates sports effect on social behavior from a sport pshycology perspective. It brings up both challenges and improvements for the sport for peace programs. The thesis also show the positive aspects of using sports as a tool for social cohesion.
