Christian messages and moral values in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

This essay explores the similarities between The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and the Bible. It argues that Christian messages and values are represented by several of the characters. Focusing on Aslan, the Lion who is a Christ-like figure, and Mr. Tumnus and three of the children: Peter, Edmund and Lucy; the essay examines the Christian messages of betrayal, resurrection and self-sacrifice. The essay also explores the Christian virtues: forgiveness and courage, which carry important lessons for the young reader. With the aid of the technique of close reading together with specific features of Lewis’s life and belief where relevant, the essay examines the Christian messages and values. The conclusion of this essay further demonstrates the Christian aspects that Ward, Colbert, and Schakel to some extent mention in their studies. While they focus on Christianity in general, this essay analyzes the Christian messages of betrayal, resurrection and self-sacrifice as well as the Christian virtues forgiveness and courage, even further. The essay further demonstrates that Lewis intentionally included Christian messages and moral values.

Progressive Education in C. S. Lewis's Prince Caspian, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Silver Chair: Narnia as a Remedy to The Green Book

Recent scholarship has taken an interest in C. S. Lewis's political views and how they are manifested in his fiction. However, few have thoroughly analyzed the specific political implications of his children's series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Part of this may be because Lewis himself insisted his fiction was nonpartisan. The heavily religious allegories in the series can also overshadow the political commentary. This thesis contributes to the growing discourse on political commentary in Lewis's fiction by identifying four concerns he had with progressive education and then demonstrating how he criticizes them in Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Silver Chair. It then proposes that Lewis presents Narnia as a remedy to progressive education by providing a moral, classical, and literary education to its fictional visitors and real-life readers.

An In-depth Analysis of Two Lesson Plans On The Lion , The Witch and The Wardrobe

In the present study, teaching guides to The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S Lewis are assessed and evaluated with the help from Ian McGrath’s Materials Evaluation and Design for Language Teaching. The study focuses on two complete teaching guides, one developed by an American language teacher and the other by the producers of the latest Narniamovie. Both of the guides were originally created for a native speaker context. However, in this dissertation ways of adapting these study guides to the goals expressed in the Swedish Curriculum (Lpo 94) and The National Syllabuses are explored. The result of my evaluation shows that both the selected guides are, with some adjustment, applicable to the education of English in Sweden. The conclusion is that the language-oriented parts of the teaching guides are valid to the Swedish curriculum and syllabuses of English, though they were developed for native speakers of English. The modules on moral education are also applicable, since value based education is fundamental in Swedish schools.

The objective of this thesis is to study how the use of movies can enrich the educational platform. Movies: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) have been analyzed using a hermeneutic method and postcolonial theory to identify stereotypes and religious and mythologicial motives. This thesis shows that the presentation of religiosity in both movies can be useful in the classroom setting although the presence of stereotypes need to be further discussed with the students. There are plenty of ways to work with both movies in the classroom setting though the teacher has a great responsibility to make it work.

An Exploration into the Use of the Biblical Narrative of the Fall within the children’s series The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

In this thesis, I explore the uses to which children’s authors C.S. Lewis and Philip Pullman put the major biblical theme of the Fall (with passing commentary on Temptation, the precursor to the Fall) in their seminal children’s series The Chronicles of Narnia and the His Dark Materials trilogy. I argue that each author uses the subject of the Fall as a central theme in his series in order to inflect the dominant message of this biblical story (that humanity has fallen from perfection into sin) with their personal opinions on fundamental human questions concerning the nature of God, the difference between good and evil, and the metaphysical ‘rules’ that structure the universe and mankind’s place in it.1 In exploring these issues, I point out the ways in which Pullman and Lewis, in their drastically differing opinions as to the legitimacy of the worldview implicit in the original Bible story, are nevertheless both heavily dependant on the overwhelming influence that the Fall narrative has had on Western culture.

Os resultados das análises apontam para a criação de novos sentidos nos TCs de acordo com o léxico selecionado pelos tradutores, levando o leitor a conceituar de diferentes modos as personagens citadas, a partir de suas impressões ao ter acesso ao TC. / The present dissertation, based on subsidies from Corpus Linguistics consists of a study aimed at studying the lexicon of a literary work. We have chosen to analyze the book The Chronicles of Narnia: the Silver Chair (1953), by the writer C. S. Lewis, and its translations into the Portuguese language As Crônicas de Nárnia: a cadeira de prata – translated by Paulo Mendes Campos –, and into the Spanish language Las Crónicas de Narnia: la silla de plata – translated by María Rosa Duhart Silva. We have selected three words for analysis, which relate to the representation of the main female characters and the symbolic aspects of the narrative: Jill, Witch and owl. These are keywords in the corpus we compiled and they were extracted using specific tools from WordSmith Tools software. We then investigated the three words according to their co-text (text around the search word) and its context. To do so, we took into account the data provided by the program, such as the number of occurrences of the words chosen in the source text (ST) and in the target texts (TTs) and the theoretical assumptions of Corpus-based Translation Studies (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996). The results of the analyzes point to the creation of new meanings in the TTs according to the lexicon selected by the translators, leading the reader to conceptualize the characters mentioned in different ways, from their impressions upon access to the TT.

Denna uppsats är en analys av Narnias berättelse och dess underliggande budskap. I dennaundersökning har det undersökts hur Bibeln och kristen tro framkommer i Narnias berättelse.Detta arbete handlar också om den kritik Lewis fått för hur han framställer landet Carlormen,islam, kvinnor och hur den kritiken kan bemötas. Denna undersökning är en litteraturstudieoch för att få svar på frågeställningarna har en hermeneutisk metod använts. Genom attstudera och tolka Narnias berättelser och texter så kan vi se att kristen tro framkommer tydligtom vi är inställda på att leta efter dessa kopplingar. Slutsatsen är att det finns många argumentsom grund för den kritik som Lewis har fått för att skriva både islamofobiskt ochkvinnoförnedrande, men att det samtidigt också finns mycket som talar emot dessa argument.
