A microcultura de um ginásio de treinamento de ginástica artística feminina de alto rendimento / The training gym microculture of women\'s artistic gymnastics at a high level sport.

Oliveira, Mauricio dos Santos de 09 May 2014 (has links)
In the sport environment we can identify microcultures consisting of a group of people who share values, beliefs, patterns of behavior and a symbolic system, verbal and nonverbal, which distinguishes them from the dominant cultural milieu. The gym is the space in which Artistic Gymnastics microcultures are sheltered and preserves the preeminent traditions which constitute, at a larger scope, the macroculture of this sport. In this environment there is a web of meanings, supposedly shared, emerging from their structures of action, behavior and communication that have idiosyncratic characteristics. Moreover, that can only be understood from the meanings assigned by its own protagonists, in other words, gymnasts and coaches. The aim of this study was to identify, present and analyze aspects that constitute the microculture of Artistic Gymnastics at a high performance training gym in the woman\'s category. The methodological path chosen consisted of a case study of ethnographic type. In the course of the study, it was possible to unveil procedures, values, and behaviors that elucidated the Woman\'s Artistic Gymnastics training culture that configured the dynamic operation of the gym. We observed in the body and in the performance of the gymnasts aspects that reflect the gym microculture, as well as in patterns of behavior and communication of the gymnasts and coaches. Values such as perseverance, discipline, dedication and subservience of the gymnasts to their coaches emerged during training hours. Furthermore, we observed inherent attributes emerging from the gym symbolic universe such as the need of pain sacrifice and ritualistic acts. This training culture, the means by which the gymnasts and coaches adapt themselves and provide significance to their actions in the physical and social environment of training, showed peculiar characteristics of Woman\'s Artistic Gymnastics that continue to be passed down across the generation of athletes by endoculturization process

Game based pedagogies and the volunteer coaching community : (re)imagining coach learning and knowledge through a collaborative approach

Williams, Shaun January 2017 (has links)
Collaborative action was undertaken in response to the continued criticisms of formal coach education. It is strongly felt that we can no longer merely criticise what is not happening in terms of coach learning, but a key requirement now is to demonstrate other options. In the UK up to 80% of coaches are volunteers who reach out to around eight million people involved in sport. This valuable workforce is largely forgotten and the bureaucratic structures which oversee formal coach education are merely concerned with quotas and income generation. A fundamental problem with formal coach education is the way in which learning is decontextualized and a knowledge deficit remains. Coaching is multifarious and complex and we need to consider better ways in terms of how we prepare people for this. The Coach Learning and Development (CLAD) programme was devised and implemented in October 2013 to May 2014 at a community rugby club in Wiltshire. Over this 8 month period a range of strategies for coach learning were integrated into CLAD to evidence methods which benefitted the transition of knowledge(s). The theoretical endeavours of Basil Bernstein are introduced to SCR for the first time, particularly the ‘pedagogical device’ to understand, theorise and develop insight into the type of educational contexts that can better support the learning of volunteer coaches. Findings suggest that CLAD as collaborative action learning was successful in transforming coaches to engage with more positive and contemporary forms of coaching pedagogy. Namely ‘game based pedagogies’ argued to be theoretically underpinned by the ‘constraints based approach’. Empirical insights are given in the hope that this can spur further methodological enquiries that move beyond the mere criticism of coach education. SCR needs research endeavours that shift beyond the ‘bricolage’ where knowledge is transferred into the real world to influence real change. Therefore, the findings also draw on the pivotal features of CLAD to not only support more value laden research commitments, but to inform policy developments and practice that can re-configure more successful outcomes for coach education and coaches.

O ensino dos conteúdos ofensivos e defensivos do futsal: opiniões dos treinadores das categorias sub-12, sub-14 e sub-16 do estado de São Paulo / The teaching of the content offensive and defensive of futsal: opinions of the coaches of the categories under-12, under-14 and under-16 from the state of São Paulo

Marques, Mariana Alonso 11 January 2018 (has links)
Já para o ensino dos conteúdos ofensivos coletivos nas categorias sub-12 e sub-14 o método analítico foi o mais mencionado / Futsal is classified as a collective sports game invasion involving the dispute for the ball, permeated by relations of cooperation and opposition between the players. In this context, coach takes on the central role of the teaching-learning- training process to mediate the pedagogical processes in search of better technical and technician-tactical throughout this process. Due to importance of the coach, his opinion becomes important to understand how the process of training of players over time happens. In that way, this paper aimed to identify and discuss how is the teaching-learning-training process at different stages of training of futsal from coaches\' speeches. The approach is qualitative from a semi-structured interview tool. For tabulation and analysis of the speeches we used the technique of the Collective Subject Discourse. We interviewed coaches of the first eight teams of the categories under-12, under-14 and under-16 classified in the State Championship of Futsal. From the systematic review, it was possible to identify that it is in Brazil where more is produced about futsal teaching and that the majority of the articles found are quantitative. After analyzing the coaches\' speeches, it was possible to conclude that there was no variation regarding the individual offensive and defensive contents, already in relation to the content offensive and defensive collective, there are important variations throughout the training process, differing from the individual contents. There is a preference for TGfU principles to address individual offensive and defensive content (individual and collective). For the teaching of collective offensive content, in the sub-12 and sub-14 categories the analytical method was the most mentioned

With the regulation of Physical Education as profession, and the creation of Federal Council of Physical Education and the Regional Councils by law 9696/98, some discussions exalted the academic and legal field as regards the liability of the professional intervention in the Fights and Martial Arts (F/MA). Judicially, some Brazilian States have failed, through the Council, to force the coach to have a training in Physical Education. Contradictorily, there are disciplines related to Fights and Martial Arts in their bachelor's degree programs, which, in the other hand, shows a discrepancy between the space of intervention and space of training. This present Thesis has as a main objective to highlight the process of formation and the structural interrelationships which constitute a professional social space of the technician function of Fights and Martial Arts in Brazil and has the specific objectives to show how is institutionalized the profession of technician in F/MA in Brazil, trying to elucidate how is the training process of these technicians in Brazil, highlighting the strategies of F/MA technicians for their maintenance in a professional field. This thesis is a sociological study where we used literature data by conceptual review, documentary survey regarding the inclusion of Fights and Martial Arts in the Physical Education training in Brazil and semistructured interviews with technicians. Data were triangulated and analyzed using the theoretical framework of Pierre Bourdieu. It was concluded that a) there is a field of institutionalized occupation of the post of technician F/MA in Brazil; (b) the technician of F/MA is formed by the vocation where training in Physical Education is harnessed to F/MA, due to reproduction of the training model of military schools; c) being recognized as a professional technician is a social category of perception, for that, technicians use exclusion techniques, discrediting of debt capital, and strategies of valuation; d) the conflicts by the monopoly between sports field, the field of F/MA and academic field of Physical Education create a pseudo field that allowed to be formed by an apparent state of inertia towards the sports and also the F/MA and the Physical Education, associated with interests of agents and their struggle for power. Therefore, to appropriate the discourse of Physical Education, technicians of F/MA, ended up creating a problem for themselves, because they attempt to assert an expertise that do not have, trying to allow an autonomy that do not have and at the same time they judge not to be their credentialism, a responsibility of the competence organ that accredits Physical Education.

The Influence of Gender, Race and Intersectionality on Stress in Division I Head Basketball Coaches

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: Research in intercollegiate athletics has provided a relatively large body of findings about the kinds of stressors found in high profile intercollegiate athletic environments and their effects on student-athletes. Research is less robust regarding stress and its effects on head coaches in high profile collegiate athletics. This study focuses on the types, frequencies, and intensities of stress experienced by NCAA, Division I head coaches. The purpose of the study is to identify the types, frequency, and intensity of stress common to 20 head basketball coaches participating in the study, as well as differences in their experiences based on gender, race and the intersectionality of race and gender. The participants in the study are 20 head coaches (five Black females, five Black males, five White females, and White males). The conceptual framework guiding the study is a definition of stress as an interaction between a person and her or his environment in which the person perceives the resources available to manage the situation to be inadequate (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). The study’s design is an adaptation of prior research conducted by Frey, M., 2007 and Olusoga, P., Butt, J., Hays, K., & Maynard, I., 2009, and Olusoga, P., Butt, J., Maynard, I., & Hays, K., 2011. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods that triangulated results scores on Maslach’s Burn-out Inventory and the Perceived Stress Scale with the thick data collected from semi-structured interviews with the 20 head coaches from each of the three data sources to enhance the validity and reliability of the findings. The researcher analyzed the data collected by placing it in one of two categories, one representing attributes of the participants including race and gender; the second category was comprised of attributes of the Division I environment. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Human Systems Engineering 2019

Prescribing mediPLAYtion for pain: the relationship between digital media and distraction coaching during needle pokes

Miller, Benjamin Jay 01 August 2018 (has links)
This research aims to compare how adults use handheld and widescreen digital devices to distract children during painful medical procedures. Levels of pain and distress are compared to assess the effectiveness of each device medium. The behaviors of the adults using these devices were also examined in order to determine the quality of the distraction provided. Additionally, the observed behaviors of the adults are documented and analyzed to determine if the rates of specific action types are predictors of pain, distress, and quality of distraction provided. The results of this work show that children reported less pain when distracted by handheld devices compared to widescreens. Although children reported less pain with handheld devices they received lower quality distraction compared to when widescreen devices were used. Two types of actions were positively associated with higher quality distraction: those that demonstrated the adults’ interest in the devices and those that provided support to children interacting with the devices. Adults using widescreen devices performed these two types of actions more frequently than those using handheld devices. These findings indicate that when adults use handheld devices they tend to reduce pain and distress compared to widescreens. However, widescreen devices are more likely encourage actions that are linked to higher quality distraction. This interdependency of devices and coaching ability led to an interpretation of findings that presents a new theory called mediPLAYtion. MediPLAYtion recommends specific actions that promote cooperative engagement using digital devices for reducing pain during medical procedures.

Servant or Service? The Problem and a Conceptual Solution

Hornsby, W. Guy, Gleason, Ben, Wathen, Dan, DeWeese, Brad H., Stone, Meg, Pierce, Kyle, Wagle, John, Szymanski, David J., Stone, Michael H. 01 December 2017 (has links)
The present article addresses issues within U.S. collegiate sport as it pertains to the physical preparation and health and well-being of intercollegiate athletes. Specifically, the sport coach is often perceived as “all knowing” about every facet of their sport when, in fact, they typically are not formally educated or well-trained in current methods of enhancing sport performance. Often strength and conditioning coaches, who may also be poorly trained, are tied directly (financially and administratively) to the sport coach—a situation which has led to a subservient role heavily influenced by the wishes of the sport coach. This has unfortunately resulted in the multidimensional well-being of the athlete clearly not being a primary objective in many programs.

IMPACT OF ASSEMBLY BILL 12 ON EMANCIPATED FOSTER YOUTH

King, Amber E. 01 June 2016 (has links)
Assembly Bill 12 was passed into law for the purpose of preparing foster youth for the transition into adulthood and provided extended support services and transitional support up to the age of 21. This qualitative study focuses on the experiences and outcome of foster youth who are participating in extended care services. Key findings were identified in the areas of education, social and emotional support, and living arrangements. These key findings provide the social workers with a better understanding of the difficulties associated with the complexity involving the transition to young adulthood. The implications of key findings have resulted in potential contributions to social work at the micro level. Suggestions include: Social worker’s increase their knowledge of the supportive resources that are appropriate for the young adult foster youth and to be well versed in the requirements of AB 12. It is further suggested, at the macro level, curriculums be developed that will connect the traditional role of social work to characteristics involving coaching and mentoring.
