Child protection in voluntary sector sport organisationsSummers, Diana Elizabeth January 2000 (has links)
This thesis examines the issue of child protection policy in voluntary sector organisations. More particularly it examines policies concerned with protecting children from child sexual abuse, within the Church of England and British voluntary sector sport over a period in the mid-1990s. Using a poststructuralist theory, specifically Actor Network Theory (ANT) this thesis explores child protection policy and discussion through case studies in the contexts of one Church of England diocese and seven voluntary sector sport organisations, utilising semistructured interviews and documentary analysis. It is suggested that the Church of England and British voluntary sector sport have common discursive 'frames', through the historical incorporation of Christian discourses into the beginnings of modem sport in the 19th Century English Public Schools, that support sexual violence against women and children and which provide legitimate identities for abusers. This cultural support for abuse, combined with similar incoherence in the organisational structures in both the Church of England and British voluntary sector sport organisations, is identified as preventing the effective dissemination of child protection policy, where such existed. The major difference between the two areas is identified as the focus within sport organisations on an 'organisational body project' by which organisational aims are achieved. This focus on the body in sport, it is argued, provides increased access and opportunities for abuse by those, like coaches, who most immediately manage the 'organisational body project'.

A Coach's way to successKoivisto, Tomi, Odén, Marcus January 2017 (has links)
Since the need for financial resources and competent leaders is high in the modern sports industry, the demands on these leaders are also growing. With few means it is expected that good results will be achieved. In order to compete at the international level, higher demands will be placed on coaches and leaders in all sports in Sweden. The purpose of this study was to develop an elite development plan for trainer in wrestling with the specific purpose of identifying the characteristics a successful trainer should possess and what efforts are needed to develop the Swedish wrestling movement. In the study, four national team coaches and four national team wrestlers participated, four of which were men and four were women. The answers received have largely been about the coach's ability to listen to his adept and to respond to their opinions. It also emerged that cohesion in the training group is a key factor for success. Furthermore, the lack of financial resources was considered a major obstacle to the development of sport. As a conclusion, it can be seen that the visibility of wrestling in Sweden is not great, which indirectly affects the conditions that both coaches and practitioners have to work in their sports.

Evaluating Interventions to Support Child-Parent Involvement in Health DecisionsFeenstra, Bryan G. January 2012 (has links)
Objective: To explore interventions that support children and parents making health decisions.
Systematic Review: A systematic review was conducted to synthesize evidence on interventions that support children’s health decision making. Five studies of variable quality were included. Interventions that improved decision making were decision coaching with or without an educational resource, or education alone.
Pre-/post-test pilot: A pre-/post-test study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of decision coaching guided by the Ottawa Family Decision Guide for children with type 1 diabetes and their parents. Of 16 families invited, 7 participated. Compared to children/parents who preferred one option at baseline, participants who were unsure of the best option rated decision coaching as more acceptable and had larger decreases in decisional conflict.
Conclusions: Few studies have evaluated interventions supporting children’s decision making. The piloted decision support intervention was feasible and acceptable, particularly with children and parents who were unsure of the best option.

Occupational Performance Coaching for Stroke Survivors (OPC-Stroke): A Novel Patient-centered Intervention to Improve Participation in Valued ActivitiesKessler, Dorothy January 2015 (has links)
Background: The majority of people living with the effects of stroke experience participation challenges. Occupational Performance Coaching for stroke survivors (OPC-Stroke) is designed to promote engagement in personally identified participation goals and develop the ability to address future participation goals.
Purpose: This thesis explored the potential efficacy of OPC-Stroke, its mechanisms of action, and the feasibility and acceptability of the randomized controlled trial methods to inform the planning of a larger trial.
Methods: A pilot randomized controlled trial with an embedded qualitative component. Twenty-one participants were randomly assigned to receive 10 sessions of OPC-Stroke or usual care. Participation, goal performance and satisfaction, goal self-efficacy, emotional well-being, and cognition were measured at pretest, posttest and six months follow-up. Qualitative interviews were conducted at posttest with individuals who were in the intervention group.
Results: No significant between group differences were noted for any outcomes, although scores for cognition approached significance (p=0.065) and also showed a large effect size (partial eta squared =0.167). Examination of effect sizes indicated a moderate clinically significant benefit of OPC-Stroke for goal performance and satisfaction scores (partial eta squared = 0.075 and 0.078 respectively). Participation scores improved for both groups but the overall trajectory of participation seemed to be different between groups. Goal self-efficacy remained stable across time and groups, and emotional well-being declined in both groups. Qualitative findings confirmed that all components - emotional support, individualized education and goal-focused problem-solving - made important contributions to promote achievement of participant-selected participation goals. Recruitment, retention and outcome measure completion rates were satisfactory.
Conclusion: Based on the effect sizes of goal performance and satisfaction, and cognition, a larger trial to examine the efficacy of OPC-Stroke is warranted. Further work to select the most appropriate tools to measure participation and goal self-efficacy is recommended prior to the next trial.

„Koučovací program „Academy of Coaching Excellence" z pohľadu jeho účastníkov" / Coaching program "Academy of Coaching Excellence" from the perspective of its participantsKasanderová, Veronika January 2012 (has links)
The thesis deals with coaching and education of coaches as this form of developing and leading people is actually representing a new phenomenon. Coaching is not legislatively amended in Czech Republic what causes that anybody can call himself a coach. For this reason, three professional associations exist on Czech scene which associate professional coaches with required level of education acquired in specialized programs. One of those programs is "Academy of Coaching Excellence" which is the main topic of this thesis. Using qualitative research it was established that coach competencies of European Mentoring and Coaching Council were found in reflexions of participants of the program which should be followed by all coaches leaving the academy. In conclusion I also suggest recommendations that can further enhance not only the quality of program but also a quality of coaches.
