Comparing Performance of Plain PHP and Four of Its Popular Frameworks

The objective of this study is to evaluate performance of four popular PHP frameworks Laravel, Symfony, CodeIgniter and Phalcon together with the plain PHP. The decision of making this study was based on the fact that there is a lack of comparison tests between the most popular PHP frameworks. Visiting the official websites of these frameworks, the first thing to notice is the slogans that have been made by the core teams. The majority of these slogans contain quality attributes like speed and high performance. As a developer looking for performance in your next project, choosing the right PHP framework by these slogans is not that easy. Therefor, the performance of these frameworks is put to the test. And to do that, three experiments are conducted in which five functionally equivalent PHP applications are developed and used as targets. One version of these applications represents the plain PHP and the other four represent the four mentioned frameworks. The experiments are conducted in two sessions. The first session deals with the execution time and the stack trace measurements while the second one is covering the measurement of the memory usage consumption. The result outcome of these experiments has been analyzed and interpreted in order to expose the performance of the targeted frameworks. The experiment results prove that the targeted frameworks perform differently compared with each other and the PHP stack. Plain PHP and Phalcon are performing well while the other three frameworks have both mediocre and low performance.

This diploma thesis deals with familiarization with available frameworks in the PHP language working in a thin client environment. It focuses on the comparison of two frameworks CodeIgniter and Zend Framework. The next section provides a detailed description of framework libraries. I suggested sample application made by two frameworks for a comparison, which contains the basic elements, that are used in creating majority of web applications. In the conclusion there are compared pros and cons of development environments.

Användningen av PHP-ramverk baserade på arkitekturmönster MVC är mycket populära inom webbutveckling tack vare att de tillhandahåller sätt att återanvända funktionalitet och logik samt en tydlig struktur. Valet av ramverk är dock inte alltid lätt och det finns många olika variabler att överväg, en väldigt viktig variabel för många utvecklare och användare är svarstider. Genom att mäta svarstider på både klient- och serversidan kommer denna studie att undersöka vilket av de två ramverken Symfony, med sin template engine Twig, och CodeIgniter, utan en template engine, som har lägst svarstider vid hämtning och rendering av data. Båda ramverken har använts för att skapa var sin webbapplikation med samma funktionalitet och därefter har ett empiriskt experiment genomförts genom olika typer av sökningar efter data baserat på ett esport-dataset. Resultatet visar på att CodeIgniter har kortare svarstider än Symfony vid både hämtning och rendering av data oavsett mängden data. I framtiden kan det vara värdefullt att undersöka hur mängden data relaterar till svarstider för Symfony och CodeIgniter vid större mängder data.

Performance Evaluation of PHP Frameworks (CakePHP and CodeIgniter) in relation to the Object-Relational Mapping, with respect to Load Testing

Context: Information technology is playing an important role in creating innovation in business. Due to increase in demand of information technology, web development has become an important field. PHP is an open source language, which is widely used in web development. PHP is used to develop dynamic web pages and it has the ability to connect with database. PHP has some good features i.e. cross platform compatibility, scalability, efficient execution and is an open source technology. These features make it a good choice for developers to choose PHP for web development. The maintenance of an application becomes difficult and performance being considerably reduced, if PHP is to be used without using its frameworks. To resolve these issues, different frameworks have been introduced by web development communities on the internet. These frameworks are based on Model, View, Controller design pattern. These frameworks provide, different common functionalities and classes in the form of helpers, components, and plug-in to reduce the development time. Due to these features like robustness, scalability, maintainability and performance, these frameworks are mostly used for web development in PHP, with performance being considered the most important factor. Objectives:The objective of this thesis is to compare and analyze the affect of data abstraction layer (ORM) on the performance of two PHP frameworks. These two frameworks are CakePHP and CodeIgniter. CAKEPHP has built-in support of object-relational mapping (ORM) but CodeIgniter has no built-in support of object-relational mapping (ORM). We considered load testing and stress testing to measure the performance of these two frameworks. Methods: We performed the experiment to show the performance of CakePHP (with ORM) and CodeIgniter (no ORM) frameworks. We developed two applications in both the PHP frameworks, with the same scope and design and measured the performance of these applications, with respect to load testing, with automated testing tool. The results have been obtained by testing the performance of both the applications on local and live servers. Conclusions:After analyzing the results we concluded that CodeIgniter is useful for small and medium sized applications. But CAKEPHP is good for large and enterprise level applications, as in stress conditions the CAKEPHP performed better than CodeIgniter on both local and live environment.

Precis som titeln avslöjar så handlar rapporten om att ta fram en AJAX-driven webbapplikation för sökning av sålda fastigheter. Gota Media AB har idag tillgång till en stor mängd lagrad information om sålda fastigheter i form av XML som kommer från Lantmäteriet. Enligt Gota Media så finns det ett stort behov av att skapa en sökbar webbapplikation till de nättidningar som de tillhandahåller som presenterar informationen för deras läsare. Syftet är att visa hur utvecklingen kan underlättas med hjälp av ramverket CodeIgniter och att ge svar på ett antal frågeställningar om hur webbapplikationen kan utvecklas för att uppfylla ett flertal krav från kunden. Genom att använda CodeIgniter tillsammans med ett flertal tekniker som Google Maps, CURL, AJAX och jQuery så kunde samtliga baskrav från kunden uppfyllas och ett bra resultat presenteras i form av en fullt fungerande webbapplikation. / Just as the title indicates this report is about making an AJAX driven web application for searching sold real estates. Today Gota Media AB has access to a large amount of information about sold real estates in XML format that comes from Lantmäteriet. According to Gota Media there is a great need to create a searchable web application for the online magazines that they provide to present the information to their readers. The aim of this report is to show how the development can be facilitated using the framework CodeIgniter and to provide answer to a number of question formulations on how the web application can be developed to meet several requirements from the customer. By way of using CodeIgniter with a majority group of techniques such as Google Maps, CURL, AJAX and jQuery all of the base requirements where implemented and a good result were presented in the form of a fully functional web application.
