The escape from oneself in search for an identity : The step in and out of codependence strangling arms

Rosati Örsell, Julia January 2015 (has links)
This essay partly refers to trying to reach a deeper understanding of codependency as a construct but also examines how codependency can be understood and explained from a codependents own perspective. The essay also examines in what way the twelve step program can be perceived as an effective treatment method for codependency, why all the interviews were taken with people who are active participants in a twelve step program for family and friends of an addict. The study’s result represents different kind of expressions and symptoms that seems most significant for codependency and partly attach these to each other but partly also examines how and why the twelve step program can prevent these. Finally it’s also discussed how codependency and the recovery by participating in the twelve step program can be explained with the help from the attachment theory and a sociocultural theory about a relational self.

Sandström, Nicklas, Vilčinskaitė, Viktorija January 2018 (has links)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on co-dependency from interview individual’s perspective who have their own experience in co-dependency from the childhood with one or both of their parents being dependent on alcohol or drug substance. The purpose of this thesis is to obtain an increased knowledge of the codependency phenomena based on the sociological perspective, reveal the risks of growing up in an addicted family as a co-dependent individual and how it has influenced the development of the quality of life in their adult age. Thesis consists of research studies, literature review and own empirical component which includes qualitative interviews with five cohabiting individuals, of which three have developed their own addiction they have received help for. The drawn conclusion is that co-dependency problem, just like substance abuse difficulty, is a complicated and ambiguous concept. Children who grow up in a dysfunctional family and are exposed to substance abuse problems from a young age, have different consequences. Many adult children of addicted parents experience that they were forced to grow up early and take upon the adult's role. Unstable and unreliable parents made the children's existence characterized by unorganized and complicated lifestyle where they felt alone and in constant struggle for confirmation, something that accompanies them into the adulthood.

How the Shadow Can Light up the Darkness : a Qualitative Study About Social Workers View on Codependency and How It Affects the Professional Client Work

Kekki, Jimmy, Hagman, Jennifer January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze the professional relationship between the social worker and the client, in relation to the social workers signs of codependency and attachment patterns. Its sub-purpose has been to study in what ways the signs of codependency can affect the professionality of social workers, connected to substance abuse. The empirical research was based on seven qualitative interviews performed on five women and two men between the age of 22 and 58. Their levels of education, upbringing and previous experiences differ. A thematic analysis was then used to analyze the empirical data, where specific themes were found. The theories used in this study, were meant to operationalize the hypothesis of the concept of codependency and the shadow. The results of this study show that the social workers background, attachment pattern and previous experiences of addiction can have an impact on one’s professional role. It is however the reflection about one’s boundaries towards oneself and the clients, as well as the reflection about codependence that is the most important part of being a professional social worker, based on the results of this study. We hope that this study can encourage people to be more aware of and interested in codependency and the importance of reflection as a social worker, but also in other care- and human treating professions.
