In the Culture of Truthiness: Comic Criticism and the Performative Politics of Stephen ColbertHolcomb, Justine Schuchard 05 June 2009 (has links)
I analyze comedian Stephen Colbert's performances as the bloviating "fake" pundit, "Stephen Colbert." Colbert's work reflects the progression of personality-driven media and performance-driven society. His frequent shifts and blending of characters – from actor and entertainer to pundit and politician – call attention to the similarly character-driven nature of "real" figures in politics and media. Using Kenneth Burke's theory of tragic and comic frames of acceptance, I analyze three sets of Colbert's performances – hosting The Colbert Report, speaking at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, and running for president – as well as the conventional situations and discourses he complicates. I argue that Colbert's comic critique provides perspective by incongruity about the processes of production, mediation, and persuasion in the business of news punditry – and the literal staging of politics performed as entertainment.

Trade-offs between Quality and Efficiency in Multilingual Dense Retrieval / Avvägningar mellan kvalitet och effektivitet i f lerspråkig tät informationssökningSchüldt, Emma January 2022 (has links)
As the amount of content online grows, information retrieval becomes increasingly crucial. Traditional information retrieval does not take the text order into account and is also dependent on exact text matching between the query and the document. Therefore, a query consisting of synonyms to words in a document will not retrieve that document even if it could have been relevant to the user. An alternative approach is dense retrieval which solves these issues by representing the semantic meaning of the query or document using a vector representation. Semantically similar queries and documents are represented with vectors close to each other in a vector space. Vector similarity search can be used to find the most relevant documents for a query. Since the semantic meanings of the words are used, synonyms and paraphrases are handled implicitly. There are several ways to design these representation vectors, either by using one or several vectors to represent each query or document, by changing the dimensionality of the vectors, or by changing the span of values in the vectors. Each option brings its trade-offs in terms of quality of search results, query latency, and index memory footprint. This study experimented with each of the alternatives above. Since most previous research within the area has been done in a monolingual, mainly English context, this study used four different languages to investigate if the trade-offs differed. In this study, the quality, latency, and memory footprint moved in the same direction, i.e., when the quality increased, then the latency increased as well. This was the case for all the languages. For the version that used one vector each for the document and query, decreasing the dimensionality to 128 or 64 gave significant latency improvements but did not affect the quality. For the larger version, which used 32 vectors for the query and 64 for the document, converting the values of vectors to binary had no significant effect on quality but greatly reduced the storage size.

Optogenetics and Computer Vision for C. elegans Neuroscience and Other Biophysical ApplicationsLeifer, Andrew 19 July 2012 (has links)
This work presents optogenetics and real-time computer vision techniques to non-invasively manipulate and monitor neural activity with high spatiotemporal resolution in awake behaving Caenorhabditis elegans. These methods were employed to dissect the nematode's mechanosensory and motor circuits and to elucidate the neural control of wave propagation during forward locomotion. Additionally, similar computer vision methods were used to automatically detect and decode fluorescing DNA origami nanobarcodes, a new class of fluorescent reporter constructs.

De Paris à Rome : Jean-Baptiste Théodon (1645-1713) et la sculpture française après Bernin / From Paris to Rome : Jean-Baptiste Théodon (1645-1713) and French Sculpture after BerniniAdamczak, Alicia 05 December 2009 (has links)
Jean-Baptiste Théodon (1645-1713) was a French sculptor of the reign of Louis XIV who belonged both to the French and Italian schools of sculpture of the Seventeenth-Century. In the 1670’s during his training at the ‘Manufacture des Gobelins’ he worked under the supervision of Charles Le Brun and met the minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert. In 1677 he joined the French Academy in Rome where he carved garden sculptures for royal estates and for his protector Colbert. Early in his Roman carrier he was made member of the Academy of St Luke and member of the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon where he met Bernini, the architect Carlo Fontana and the painter Carlo Maratta. Appreciated by the Pope Innocent XII he obtained several commissions at Saint-Peter’s (Baptismal chapel, Monument to Christine of Sweden) and at the same time he worked for the Jesuits at the Sant’Ignazio chapel at the Gesù. As one of the most significant sculptors of the end of the Roman Seicento he dedicated his last years in Rome to the pope Clement XI and the papal basilica before his return to Paris in 1705 where he worked for the Sun King and the ‘Maisons’ of Meudon and Marly. With the same maestria Jean-Baptiste Théodon carved allegories for Colbert, mythological and historical figures for Louis XIV, funeral sculptures and portrait for Christine of Sweden as well as works of art for Roman churches. The Ph.D. dissertation consists of a study of the career of the sculptor with an analysis of his artistic manner and its evolution from Paris to Rome. In addition the thesis includes the complete ‘catalogue raisonné’ of his works, sculptures and drawings.
