Rhythmicity and Broken Narrative as a Means of Portraying Identity Crisis in Erna Brodber’s Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come HomeZheltukhina, Daria January 2012 (has links)
In the present thesis, Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home, the novel by the Jamaican writer Erna Brodber, is analyzed in the context of post-colonial identity trauma. Analyzing the complex organizational and narrative structure of the novel, the essay author studies how the novel’s rhythmicity and the broken narrative portray the protagonist’s identity fragmentation. Drawing on the work’s connection to the ring game played in the Caribbean and applying the symbolism of the Caribbean folk rhythms, the essay author discusses the subversive intent of Brodber’s novel and her method of rewriting the past as a way of recovering one's identity.

Simulation of Switched EthernetKumar Nachegari, Kishore, Babu Eadi, Suresh January 2006 (has links)
Switched Ethernet is an Ethernet LAN that uses switches to connect individual nodes. This is popular because of its effective and convenient way of extending the bandwidth of existing Ethernets. Switched Ethernet is being considered by the industry community because of its open standardization, cost effectiveness, and the support for higher data rates up to 10Gbps. Even though many special-purposed solutions were proposed to support time constrained communication over Switched Ethernet, still there were some doubts about the real time handling capability of Switched Ethernet. To achieve reliable transmission guarantees for real time traffic over Switched Ethernet, it is important to measure the performance of Switched Ethernet networks for real time communication. In this thesis work we have observed the average end-to-end packet delay for real time traffic over a Switched Ethernet by simulation, which is very much essential for real time communication in industrial applications, where the communication is time-deterministic. In our thesis we used FCFS priority queuing in both the source nodes and switch. In this thesis we also discussed about the feasibility analysis for fixed sized frames and some traffic handling methods. We used 100mbp/s single full duplex Ethernet switch for our simulation. Finally simulation analysis and simulation results are discussed. Our purpose of simulation of Switched Ethernet networks is of good importance for the real time industrial applications.

Democracy To Come in Derridean Philosophy: Between Sovereignty and Unconditionality” / La democracia por venir en la filosofía derrideana: entre la soberanía y la incondicionalidadBalcarce, Gabriela 09 April 2018 (has links) (PDF)
This article aims to perform a reading of the Derridean notion of democracy to come”. Taking this notion as a starting point, the author makes a deep reading of the problems of democracy with regard to its foundation and concept. Our hypothesis is that democracy to come” allows Derrida to put democracy -as a resistance to any totalizing closure in the name of the common and the same- into an abyss. At the same time, we’ll interpret this notion considering its links with sovereignty and unconditionality, understanding the latter as an infinite openness to otherness.

The object of this research is the analysis of sentences from the Brazilian Portuguese (BP) that contains the verb of movement chegar. It´s found – in the writing and speaking – constructions with the lexical verb chegar, that can work as a complete verb, or it can work, in process of grammaticalization, as a quase-auxiliar verb. When the verb is analyzed as lexical, it can be monovalent or bivalent. There is always a subject and, as a complement, select, most of times, a locative. It can still select the indirect complement, i.e., when the argument indicates that a specific point was reached. This argument indicates, normally, a price, a position/collocation and a percentage. In process of grammaticalization, the verb CHEGAR has been approved in the test of auxiliary verbs, however, as it´s not emptied of sense in the verbal periphrasis CHEGAR A + INFINITIVE, we consider a quase/semi-auxiliar, according to a proposal for Travaglia (2003).

Life and ‘The Scriptures’ in John 5:39-40Punch, John David 18 September 2007 (has links)
In John 5:39-40 we see a dividing line being drawn over the proper interpretation of “the Scriptures” between the Jewish leaders of the first century and the early Christians of the Johannine community. Both parties agreed that “searching the Scriptures” was essential; however, the two groups disagreed about the nature with which one was to “search the Scriptures” and how one was to possess or lay hold of this eternal life. “The Jews” viewed eternal life as a birthright that was maintained by rigorous study of the law and strict observance of its principles. The study of the law became an end in itself. The Christians of the Johannine community, on the other hand, believed that eternal life was only granted as gift when a person comes to the one of whom the Scriptures testified, Jesus Christ. Eternal life was neither a birthright nor something that could be merited, but rather a gift given to those who truly “search the Scriptures” and truly see the one who they are written of. This disagreement between the Johannine community and the first century Jewish leadership is a reflection of the division between Jesus and the Jewish leaders during his day as well as a reflection of the division between Christians and Jews in our day. But perhaps more importantly, it is a reflection of the complacent attitude that pervades much of the church today. The words of this passage are a warning or wake-up call to us all. We must be careful not to presume that eternal life is ours because of any merit or association. We must be careful to search “the Scriptures” with our eyes wide open and without presuppositions that will hinder of from discerning its true meaning. But most importantly, we must look to the one of whom these “Scriptures” testify, Jesus Christ. If we truly want to live, as we assume all men do, then we must do what is necessary to inherit eternal life. We must heed the words of “the Scriptures” and we must heed Jesus’ words: we must come to Jesus who alone is the source of eternal life. This begins and ends with proper interpretation of the Word of God. / Dissertation (MA (New Testament Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / New Testament Studies / MA / unrestricted

Resultatiewe voorwerpe in Afrikaans / Objects of result in AfrikaansBothma, Mariana Theodora. 15 June 1995 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Because of the variety of relationships which exist between transitive verbs and their
objects, all direct objects are not comparable with one another.
One class of object, however, which stands by itself and which is of considerable
interest, is the OBJECT OF RESULT. Because of the particular relation which exists
between object and transitive verb in resulting constructions, we have here an unique
class of direct object.
The resulting construction is therefore, in the first instance a relation construction. This
specific relation between transitive verb and object is mainly determined by the
presence of or absence of certain inherent distinctive characteristics by transitive verbs
and which play a determining role in identifying OBJECTS OF RESULT.
From this study it is also clear that there is a semantic value present in transitive verbs
(that can combine with objects of result) which has not been observed or distinguished
by lexicographers and grammarians until recently. / Omdat voorwerpe van sinne in 'n verskeidenheid van betrekkinge met (oorganklike)

There's A New Sheriff in Town: Caribbean Rewriting of the American Western in Perry Henzell and Michael Thelwell's The Harder They Come and Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the WidowUnknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this investigation is to analyze the ways in which the American Western genre has been reworked in an Anglophone Caribbean context. This paper focuses on the role of the cowboy figure as it pertains to both a postcolonial Jamaican context a more globalized, diasporic Anglophone Caribbean setting. The Western genre, while not typically associated with the Caribbean, has tropes that certainly occur in both film and literature. There is not much scholarship that details the importance of this reimagination as a positive association in the region, and I have chosen both the film and novel The Harder They Come by Perry Henzell and Michael Thelwell, respectively, and Praisesong for the Widow by Paule Marshall to trace these ideas. Together, these works provide a multifaceted understanding of how the American Western helps to interpret the Anglophone Caribbean as a participant in an increasingly globalized world. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
