Garin Boronat, Manuel 29 May 2012 (has links)
This thesis studies the visual gag as moving image, analyzing its essential patterns, forms and functions. A series of key silent film and slapstick examples are located in order to examine their evolution throughout film history and their extensions in other media like television and video games. The research focuses on three main dimensions of the gag’s formal construction, time, space and movement; three formal scopes that lead to three functional limits: narration, gameplay and sense. The thesis confirms the essential role of the gag as one of the most powerful forms of visual resistance in contemporary culture, that questions narrative and symbolic values through comic possibilities.

Hitler comedy / Hitlerhoff

Doig, Thomas James January 2009 (has links)
The critical component of this thesis, “Hitler Comedy”, is a dissertation on the intersection between comedy theory in general, and the specific practice of Hitler comedy. Focusing on Bertolt Brecht’s play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (1941; directed by Heiner Müller in 1995), and Dani Levy’s film Mein Führer: the Truly Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler (2007), my argument critiques existing “instrumentalist” theories of comedy as didactic and morally reductive. Moving beyond prevailing conceptualisations of comedy as corrective and/or forgiving, my dissertation emphasises the centrality of pleasure, displeasure and disruption for audience members in the process of their experiencing Hitler comedies. / The creative component of this thesis is a script and a DVD recording of Hitlerhoff, a theatre and multimedia work that combines the characters of Adolf Hitler and David Hasselhoff into a single hybrid figure. Hitlerhoff is a spectacular black comedy that uses comedy to entertain and unsettle, and to disrupt audience members’ expectations. Hitlerhoff is a practical demonstration of the ability of “irresponsible” comedy to act as a potent catalyst for “responsible”, ethically engaged discussions.

In the name of the earth : a tropology of light in the eschatological space of the Commedia

Benucci, Alessandro 08 December 2014 (has links)
This work is an interpretation of the first two parts of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri (1261-1321) from the symbolic meanings associated to light by the author. The objective is to demonstrate that through the representation of multiple light phenomena in Hell and in Purgatory , moral recovery designed for the reader is similar to a true conversion, a journey of the mind fleeing its error (darkness) in order to approach salvation (light) by stages. In the first part, the necessity to place part of the Christian eschatological space on earth is related to Dante’s vicissitudes that make him question the destiny of a humanity in distress. The error of the soul which has lost the good of the intellect, as well as its redemption, are evoked in the world of the living by the presence of the realm of eternal damnation (the infernal abyss) and a space for temporary penance (a high mountain). By crossing those two places of the afterlife, the protagonist escapes the dark forest and prepares to reach the illuminated colle. Thus he suggests a model of moral behavior through a symbolic interpretation of the luminous phenomena. In the second and third parts, the exemplarity attributed to the representation of light is made clear through the exceptional experience of the pilgrim, viator in the world of the dead : in Hell, the "poetics of fire " stages the evolution of consciousness : an awareness of the disastrous consequences of an unhealthy use of the intellect (ingegno) ; in Purgatory , the "poetry of heaven " traces the gradual release of a mind to which the signs of its election to the privilege of grace are revealed.

Shakespeare's early comedies: studies in The comedy of errors, The taming of the shrew and The two gentlemen of Verona

Bryant, Peter January 1970 (has links)
This dissertation offers fairly full readings of three early Shakespearean comedies. Because these works are still partly misunderstood, it has seemed reasonable to lay the critical emphasis on explication, though a certain amount of judging has been inevitable. The aim has been to induce recognition of aspects of these plays to which much modern criticism has seemed opaque.

Salvador

A Tijuca e o pântano: \"A Divina Comédia\" na obra de Machado de Assis entre 1870 e 1881 / The oscillation between contrasting styles: Dante Alighieri\'s The Divine Comedy in Machado de Assis\'s works from 1873 to 1881

Eugenio Vinci de Moraes 04 September 2007 (has links)
Quotations, allusions and references to Dante Alighieri\'s The Divine Comedy started to appear frequently and significantly in the works of Machado de Assis during the 1870\'s. They can be found in all genres Machado worked with, from poetry to criticism, from newspaper columns (crônicas) to prose, evidencing the strong impression that Dante\'s work left in the Brazilian writer. This thesis is about the references to Dante in Machado de Assis\'s works from 1873 to 1881, beginning with Americanas, passing through Helena and Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, and finally \"O alienista\". It aims, accordingly, to demonstrate that Machado de Assis tailored his themes, style, sketches and repertoire to fit in the tradition of high literature, especially that of the Comedy. Such experience shows the oscillation between contrasting styles in Machado\'s work - the elevated and the low, the sublime and the vulgar -, which the author conciliates by employing combinations, fusions, imitations and parodies to bring together such opposite poles.

Silva, João Paulo Santos 27 February 2018 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In Grande sertão: veredas (1956) the serious tone of the narrative is mixed with the appearance of comic elements that, although sparse, are part of the structure of the narrative. This study shows how manifestations of comedy appears in this novel, such as procedures, techniques, comic structures, jokes, as well as the representation of laughter, by Guimarães Rosa, connecting these elements to the plot. To do so, it starts from a theoretical review on the comic and the laughable in Aristóteles (2008), Bergson (2007), Freud (1977), Jolles (1976), Propp (1992), Minois (2003), as well as critical discussions of Candido (1990), Galvão (1986), Nunes (2013), Utéza (1994) and Hansen (2000). In addition, the function performed by the comic processes present in this narrative allows us to understand the role of comicity in its different forms in the Rosa’s novel. Thus, it is possible to discuss relations between the serious and the comic tone, and the constant relieving of tensions. The Rosa’s linguistic re-creations, according to Freud's discussions (1977), create pleasure in times of tension, bringing relief on, which allows not only the reader to continue reading, but also that the narrative, although dense due to the tensions of jagunços’ battles, flows with moments of distension. Yet the functionality goes beyond that: the relativization of values and behaviors that rethink the usual logic of the world may be the most recurrent. In this case, according to this study, the comic derives from a reversal of cultural logic and contributes to the overcoming of metaphysical concerns through laughter.

We examined the reception of the plays¿ first presentations and Artur Azevedo¿s ideas to base our research, in order to emphasize it¿s importance in the historical period and to enlighten the knowledge about the author¿s intellectual personality. In especial, our work was directed to the relation between the writer and the spectators towards whom he created each comedie, because we ascertained that the comprehension of his dramaturgy is centered in this relationship. We studied the literary and theatrical elements (composition, language, characters, plot) of the plays with the purpose of assuring the esthetical value of some texts, as well as the structural problems of others. We verified that the text elements received interference from the audience¿s taste, which emphasizes the aspect of Artur Azevedo¿s character as a man of theater, not only a playwright / Doutorado / Literatura Brasileira / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária
