Ecosystem strategy in the shadow of nonprofit actors / La stratégie d'écosystème dans l'ombre des acteurs à but non lucratif

Plaksenkova, Elena 27 May 2019 (has links)
My thesis focuses on issues related to value creation and value capture in business ecosystems. I explore how nonprofit and for-profit actors shape these ecosystems and their evolution through the design of relationships with key complements. The first chapter uses a formal model to study how a nonprofit actor, by strategically interacting with firms, can facilitate value creation in vertical supply chains. The second chapter studies the strategies that firms employ to shape the ecosystem they compete in and maximize value capture. Specifically, I look at firms’ decision regarding whether to make their product compatible with multiple complements or keep them exclusive for a specific complement in the context of anti-HIV drug market. I use a proprietary individual-level dataset on drug consumption obtained from the national French healthcare insurance and hand-collected data on clinical trials of anti-HIV drugs. The third chapter bridges the first two chapters and explores how nonprofit actors actively shape the ecosystem by comparing firm-sponsored and nonprofit-sponsored clinical trials on anti-HIV drugs. To conclude, I seek to understand how firms can maximize value creation and value capture in the contexts where complementary products are important. I strive to include nonprofit actors as an integral part of the ecosystem and understand how the actions of actors who do not seek to maximize profit affect the strategies of for-profit actors towards their complements.

A Study on the Acquisition of Chinese Directional Complements

lin, lin 07 November 2014 (has links)
This paper adopted second language acquisition theories and research methods to investigate how second-language (L2) Chinese learners acquire Chinese directional complements (DCs). It included two main parts: a corpus study and a questionnaire survey. The corpus came from the compositions of 47 Chinese learners at intermediate and advanced levels at a New England university. And the data also included the questionnaire survey of 82 novice, intermediate, and advanced levels’ Chinese learners and 15 native Chinese speakers who study in the same university. The corpus study shows that L2 learners at intermediate and advanced level preferred to use DCs with extended meanings. Moreover, they preferred to combine verb with DC as an entirety rather than placing the object between verb and DC. The error analysis based on the survey data shows that omission errors of DCs accounted for the largest percentage, the percentage of misordering errors and misuse errors were very close, and addition errors were limited. Moreover, a relative acquisition sequence was constructed according to accuracy rate and the usage rate. This acquisition sequence reflects several phenomena: 1) the position of the object influenced the acquisition significantly; 2) some errors were caused vi by interlingual transfer 3) DCs with extended meanings were easier than DCs with directional meanings in some cases; 4) the type of DC was not an important factor to affect the acquisition sequence; 5) L2 learners’ comprehension competence was better than the expression competence at all level; 6)and some DC patterns’ average accuracy increased at higher level, however, the errors of certain DC patterns were fossilized. Since the presentation of the DCs in the textbooks can impact the acquisition. The researcher evaluated the presentation of DCs in participants’ textbooks. There were some deficiencies, such as overwhelming introduction in one lesson, repeating introduction of the same DC, and so on. At last, some implications to teaching DCs were provided based on the findings in previous chapters.

"Cut and Break"-beskrivningar i svenskt teckenspråk : Barns och vuxnas avbildande verbkonstruktioner / "Cut and Break"-descriptions in Swedish Sign Language : Children's and adults' depicting verb constructions

Simper-Allen, Pia January 2016 (has links)
Previous studies on children’s acquisition of depicting verbs in signed languages have chiefly studied the use of classifiers in verbs of motion and location, particularly the order in which the different classes of handshape are acquired. The age of the children in these studies have ranged from age three to thirteen, and an important finding has been that classifier constructions are not fully acquired until early adolescence. Most of these studies have used an elicitation tool to investigate the production and comprehension of classifiers, but have not provided any adult target norms of the test items when scoring children’s achievement. The present dissertation provides a detailed description of both adults’ and children’s verb constructions in descriptions of cutting and breaking events in Swedish Sign Language (SSL), specifically focusing on the number of hands used in signing, handshape category and hand activity, which has not been previously described for any sign language. As part of this study, 14 deaf adults (ages 20–72) and 11 deaf children (2;1–6;6) of deaf parents, all native-users of SSL, performed a task that involved describing 53 video clips of cutting and breaking events. The clips show an event in which an actor separates material, either with the aid of a tool or without. Additionally, some clips show an entity separating by itself without an actor being involved. The adults described the events with depicting verb constructions that are produced with two hands. The analysis of the handshapes produced three categories: substitutor, manipulator and descriptor. The most frequent construction in the description of events without a tool was two acting manipulators (depicting a hand handling an object), whereas in descriptions of events with a tool the combinations were acting substitutor or manipulator with a non-acting manipulator. The acting hand referred to the tool and the non-acting manipulator to the affected entity. In descriptions of events without an actor, either two substitutors or two manipulators were used. In addition to depicting verb constructions, the descriptions also contained resultative complements, i.e. signs carrying information about the result of the activity being carried out. The complements were either lexical signs or some form of depicting verb construction. Similar observations have not been noted for any other signed language. In the manner of the adults, the children used depicting verb constructions in descriptions of cutting and breaking events (681 tokens), but they also used pointing and lexical signs (64 tokens). Nearly half of the verb constructions that were used by the children corresponded to the adult target forms. The majority of the constructions describing events without a tool corresponded to the adult target forms using two acting manipulators, even among the youngest informants. In events with a tool, only a third of the constructions corresponded to the adult target forms (emerging at 4;8 – 5;0); the remaining two-thirds were deviating constructions in terms of number of hands, handshape category and hand activity. Resultative complement are sparsely used by children (57 tokens), the most chosen type of complement being lexical signs. Pervasive features of children’s constructions were the addition of contact between the hands and a preference for substitutors, something not found in adults’ constructions. These features were elucidated within the framework of Real Space blending theory, with the study showing that children first use visible blended entities and that invisible blended entities do not emerge until 4;8–5;0. /
Disputationen teckenspråkstolkas

Does immigration affect native's labor market outcomes in Germany?

Kastrat, Merima, Tas, Dilan January 2019 (has links)
Germany is one of the several countries in Europe that have opened its borders to immigrants for many years. The admission of immigrants into Germany has contributed to the country being the second largest immigration destination in the world, and this has resulted in both negative and positive outcomes for the natives. In this essay, the effect of immigration on natives’ hourly wages and employment was examined, by using microdata for Germany. Native workers’ educational level attainments and 16 different regions in Germany were taken into account to obtain regional variation. Cross-sectional data was used for the years 2005, 2009 and 2015 in order to measure the effect of the share of immigrants on natives’ hourly wages and employment. The findings showed that the share of immigrants, had a positive effect on natives’ wages and employment in 2005 and 2009. In 2015, however, a negative relationship was found, with the share of immigrants impacting negatively on natives’ wages but not on employment. Thus, the study highlights the importance of immigrants on natives’ hourly wages and employment.

Ο ρόλος της σεργλυκίνης στη ρύθμιση του συμπληρώματος και στην έκφραση των μεταλλοπρωτεϊνασών σε μυελωματικά πλασματοκύτταρα: βιοχημική, μοριακή και κλινικοεργαστηριακή προσέγγιση / Role of serglycin in the regulation of complement system and in the expression of matrix metalloproteinases in myeloma plasma cells: biochemical, molecular and clinical lab approach

Σκλήρης, Αντώνιος 28 February 2013 (has links)
Serglycin (SG) is a proteoglycan expressed by hematopoietic cells and is constitutively secreted by multiple myeloma (MM) cells. SG participates in the regulation of various inflammatory events. We found that SG secreted by human MM cell lines inhibits both the classical and lectin pathways of complement, without influencing alternative pathway activity. It was also shown that SG could not initiate any activation of the complement system. The inhibitory effect of SG is due to direct interactions with C1q and mannose binding lectin (MBL). C1q-binding is mediated through the glycosaminoglycan moieties of SG, whereas binding to MBL requires the presence of SG protein core. Interactions between SG and C1q as well as MBL are diminished in the presence of chondroitin sulfate type E. In addition, we localized the SGbinding site to the collagen-like stalk of C1q. Interactions between SG and C1q as well as MBL are ionic in character and only the interaction with MBL was found to be partially dependent on the presence of calcium. Although we found the serum levels of SG to be elevated in patients with MM compared to healthy controls, no statistical significant differences were observed for classical and alternative pathway activity in sera between MM patients and healthy donors. Despite that, it is proved that increase levels of SG show a tendency to correlate with decreased levels of classical pathway activity in serum of MM patients. Moreover, we found that SG expressed from myeloma plasma cells protects these cells from complement activation induced by treatment with anti-thymocyte immunoglobulins. It is also demonstrated that SG on the surface of MM cells inhibits complement deposition on the membrane of these cells. Cells which do not express SG on its’ surface are 2-3 times more sensitive to complement attack compared with cells expressing high levels of SG. This might protect myeloma cells during immunotherapy and promote survival of malignant plasma cells. Moreover, it is shown that SG from MM cells is capable to interact with collagen type I, the most abundant collagen in bone. Furthermore, SG is present on the surface of myeloma plasma cells and it is involved in the adhesion of MM cells to collagen type I in bone marrow microenvironment. In addition, it is shown that the interaction of myeloma plasma cells to collagen type I, mediated by cell surface SG, induces expression and secretion of both MMP-2 and MMP-9 from MM cells. Along the process, we have investigated levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in serum and marrow of patients with MM. Decreased levels of both MMP-2 and MMP- 9 in serum of MM patients have been observed compared to healthy donors. Instead, MMP-2 was found to be increased in bone marrow of MM patients compared to control samples, while no differences observed for MMP-9. Finally, marrow levels of MMP-2 seem to correlate with serum levels of the enzyme along with a marker of bone resorption, NTx. This might indicate the implication of MMP-2 in the pathogenesis of bone disease in MM. Even though, no correlation of MMP-9 with NTx was observed, proving that MMP-9 may play a significant role in different pathogenetic mechanism occurring in MM.

Verbes labiles et schémas de complémentation en anglais / English labile verbs and patterns of complementation

Delhem, Romain 30 June 2018 (has links)
Within a constructionist framework, this thesis studies English labile verbs, which can enter into various syntactic configurations without changing form. A study of their complementation shows that categorizing them into semantic families is relevant but not sufficient to explain their behavior. The thesis defends a syncretic approach to verb complementation to that accounts for its important productivity and its sometimes arbitrary limits. It is shown that all verbs have a default syntactic configuration, which is not meaningful and which simply allows the verb to express its arguments in an unmarked way, in accordance with certain principles of conceptual coherence. Conversely, when the complementation of the verb has an identifiable semantic contribution, the existence of fully meaningful patterns of complementation is posited. These are defined as sets of complements, whose meaning is distinct from that of the verb with which they are associated and is found regularly with verbs of diverse categories. It is shown that patterns of complementation should be considered fully-fledged English linguistic units. This implies that synchronically, these patterns are mentally stored by speakers rather than the result of a process of analogy with existing constructions. Their status as linguistic units makes it possible to study their meaning in the same way as more classical lexical units. Although most of them are polysemic, some patterns of complementation exhibit uses that are difficult to link semantically and must therefore be viewed as homonyms.

Aquisição da factividade: complementação infinitiva e extração-QU no português brasileiro / Acquisition of factivity: infinitive complementation and WH-extraction in BP

Sammy Cardozo Dias 23 March 2012 (has links)
In the realm of linguistic theory, the phenomenon of factivity is, in a broad sense, related to the property some lexical items or predicates exhibit of introducing an implicit or explicit presupposition. In the verbal domain, Kiparsky and Kiparsky (1971) assume that factive verbs carry the presupposition that the complement clause they may subcategorize expresses a true proposition. From the acquisition point of view, there is no clear consensus about the age of mastery of the properties of factive sentences. Hopmann & Maratsos (1977) conclude that factive sentences are mastered around age 6. For Abbeduto & Rosenberg (1985), children age 4 have already achieved it. Schulz (2002; 2003) argues for a stepwise acquisition pattern, suggesting stages children pass through up to 7 years old. Léger (2007) adds to Schulzs yet another stage in order to account for some semifactive verbs, for which the right distinction wouldnt be in place before 11 years old. At last, Scoville & Gordon (1979) suggest that only 14 year olds would be able to fully master factivity. This variety of results corroborate the idea of a stepwise acquisition pattern, let alone the different aspects involved in the phenomenon of factivity: the identification of a class of verbs allowing a factive reading, its presuppositional character, interlinguistic variation concerning possible subcategorization frames and a specific behavior as far as extraction in complex sentences is considered. This study aims at contributing for the investigation of the acquisition of factivity in Portuguese, focusing specifically on two underexplored aspects: the possibility of some factive predicates allowing non-finite complements in this language and the extraction patterns in factive complex sentences. The results obtained are discussed in the light of linguistic analyses, which couch on distinct syntactic features assigned to the factive predicates, (KIPARSKY E KIPARSKY, 1971; MELVOLD, 1991; SCHULZ, 2003; AUGUSTO, 2003; LIMA, 2007), with logical/semantic outcomes (LEROUX E SCHULZ, 1999; SCHULZ, 2002; 2003)

[en] This study is about the acquisition of accusative pronominal complements of third person in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and Rio-Platense Spanish (RS). The dissertation is based in a theoretical proposal that aims for articulation between linguistic theory and processing theory in the study of Language Acquisition. The working hypothesis in this research is that the information coming from the phonic interface between language and performance systems is processed differently in each language, depending on their respective pronominal systems. We also assume that, once a children represents pronominal complements in his lexic as a set of phifeatures, there is no distinction between the two languages regarding semantinc interpretation and identification of the referent. We relate two experiments. The first one uses the headturn preference procedure, aiming to verify the sensibility of 12-22 months old children acquiring RS to the phonic form of accusative clitics. The second is a contrastive study of BP and RS, using the technique of object identification from stimulus sentences, aiming to measure the ability of 2-4 years old children to distinguish the pronominal system of their language and iterpret information relating gender and number in the identification of the referent of pronominal complements. The results suggest that children around 18 months are sensitive to the form of clitics in RS, and 2 years old children are able to distinguish the complements of their own language, although processing the pronominal reference presents difficulties even at age 4. The results are consistent with the hipotesis of this dissertation.

Preposition typology with manner of motion verbs in Spanish

Bassa Vanrell, Maria del Mar 25 March 2014 (has links)
Spanish, as a V(erb)-framed language (Talmy 1985), is expected to lexicalize the path of motion in the verb and manner in some satellite when it comes to the description of motion events. Nonetheless, it shows mixed properties (e.g. Aske 1989, Berman & Slobin 1994). All manner of motion verbs can take a path satellite introduced by the prepositions "hacia" and "hasta", and yet only some can take a path satellite introduced by the preposition "a." I claim that goal XPs introduced by "hasta" and "hacia" are adjuncts, whereas "a" is an argument marker. In order to capture the intermediacy of a verb’s ability to take a goal XP, I classify manner of motion verbs according to a three-way distinction that takes into account whether they encode path categorically, overwhelmingly, or only sometimes, and whether they lexically reject the notion of a goal. Finally, I posit verb coercion—under certain semantic and pragmatic conditions—of manner of motion verbs that strongly or categorically favor displacement in order to express a goal. These semantic/pragmatic influential factors are reduced to (i) degree of manner and (ii) degree of goal-orientedness. / text
