Análise por elementos finitos da junta de vedação e dinâmica de um compressor hermético / Finite element analysis of the gasket and dynamics of a hermetic compressor

Essa tese tem o objetivo modelar um subconjunto de peças de um compressor hermético de refrigeração idealizado utilizando um programa de elementos finitos para estudar a pressão de contato na junta da placa de válvulas com e sem pressão de gás refrigerante. Nessa pesquisa também se faz a modelagem dinâmica da bomba de um compressor acadêmico com vistas a estudar a vibração gerada durante seu funcionamento. No estudo da junta de vedação se faz um modelo geométrico do conjunto cabeçote e juntas com um programa CAD. A partir da geometria do subconjunto um modelo físico é construído no ANSYS®, que leva em consideração as diferentes propriedades dos materiais do conjunto cabeçote e juntas, inclusive a não linearidade do material da junta. São feitas simulações aplicando diferentes valores de força normal nos parafusos do cabeçote. No estudo de vibração do compressor faz-se o modelo de CAD da bomba de onde se obtém seu peso e propriedades de inércia. A matriz de rigidez do sistema de suspensão da bomba é calculada e se faz a análise modal da bomba. Os resultados das análises de pressão de contato foram mostrados através de gráficos da normal closure e da normal pressure da junta. Eles indicam de forma clara as regiões de baixa pressão de contato aplicada pelas peças que estão ou deveriam estar comprimindo a junta de vedação, que seriam regiões de falhas. Na análise dinâmica da bomba do compressor, é calculada a matriz de rigidez total do sistema com as molas de suspensão, levando em consideração a rigidez compressiva, de flexão e cisalhante das molas. Com a solução do modelo dinâmico criado, calcula-se a matriz dinâmica, a matriz modal normalizada, a matriz de frequências características, o deslocamento <span style=\"font-style:italic\">X <span style=\"position: relative; bottom: 1.3ex; letter-spacing: -1.2ex; right: 1.2ex\">&#8594; da bomba e também as energias cinética e potencial da bomba devido às forças de agitação. O modelo de elementos finitos da junta da placa de válvulas tem resultados coerentes e o modelo dinâmico da bomba fornece vários resultados para a análise de vibração de compressores. / This thesis has as objective to model a subset of parts of an idealized hermetic compressor for refrigeration using a program of finite elements intended to study the contact pressure on the valve plate gasket with and without pressure from the refrigerant gas. In this research a dynamic modelling of an academic compressor pump is also made with the aim of studying the vibration generated during its functioning. In the study of the sealing gasket, a geometric model of the cylinder head and gasket assembly is made by using a CAD program. From the geometric of the subset a physical model is built on the ANSYS®, which takes into account the different properties of the cylinder head and gasket assembly materials, including the non-linearity of the gasket material. Simulations are made by applying different normal force values on the cylinder head screws. In the compressor vibration study, a CAD pump model is made, thus obtaining its weight and inertia properties. The stiffness matrix of the pump suspension system is calculated and a modal analysis of the pump is made. The results from the contact pressure analyses were shown through \"normal closure\" and \"normal pressure\" charts of the gasket. They show in clear form the low contact pressure regions applied by the parts that are or should be compressing the sealing gasket, which would the regions of failures. In the dynamic analysis of the compressor pump, the total stiffness matrix of the system is calculated with the suspension springs, taking into account the compressive, flexural and shearing rigidities of the springs. With the solution of the dynamic model created, the following are calculated: the dynamic matrix, the normalized modal matrix, the characteristics frequency matrix, the <span style=\"font-style:italic\">X <span style=\"position: relative; bottom: 1.3ex; letter-spacing: -1.2ex; right: 1.2ex\">&#8594; displacement from the pump, as well as the kinetic and potential energy of the pump due to shaking forces. The finite elements model of the valve plate gasket has coherent results and the dynamic model of the pump provides various results for the analysis of the compressor vibration.

Essa dissertação desenvolve e faz uso de uma técnica de medição com objetivo de obter dados experimentais envolvidos no ciclo de trabalho dos compressores herméticos alternativos, largamente utilizados nos sistemas de refrigeração. O trabalho mostra o comportamento das válvulas de admissão e descarga durante o funcionamento do compressor, as pressões no cilindro, na sucção, na descarga e também a variação de rotação do eixo durante um ciclo de compressão completo. Todas as características mensuradas estão referenciadas à posição angular do eixo do compressor, o que permitiu monitorar todos os eventos em função do seu deslocamento angular. Para o desenvolvimento desse trabalho foi necessário planejar um sistema de medição robusto, não vulnerável aos fatores ambientais, presentes dentro da carcaça do compressor. A limitação do espaço físico foi um fator de grande importância na escolha dos sensores, assim como a velocidade de resposta dos instrumentos, pois um ciclo de compressão tem período menor que 0,020 segundos. A coleta dos dados e a análise dos sinais foram realizadas com o auxilio de hardware apropriado e software especialmente desenvolvido. / In this dissertation it is developed and applied measurement methods to obtain experimental data of a hermetic compressor work cycle, widely used in the refrigeration systems. This work shows the suction and discharge valve behaviors, the pressure in the cylinder, as well as in the discharge and suction chambers, and also crankshaft rotation variation during a complete compression cycle. All the measurements are reference to crankshaft angular position of compressor which allows to verify the events as a function of the crankshaft angular displacement. For the development of this work it was necessary to plan a reliability measure system, not affected by environmental factors inside the housing of compressor. The inner space limitation was an important feature for choosing the sensors as well as their time response, since the period compression cycle is less than 0.020 seconds. The data acquisition and signal analysis were done with appropriate hardware and it was developed a specific software.

Unsteady Performance of an Aeroengine Centrifugal Compressor Vaned Diffuser at Off-Design Conditions

<p>  </p> <p>As aviation fuel costs and consumption have continued to rise over recent decades, gas turbine engine manufacturers have sought methods to reduce fuel burn. Manufacturers plan to achieve this by reducing the specific fuel consumption of the machine by increasing the bypass ratio through a reduction of the diameter of the engine core. This presents an opportunity for implementing a centrifugal compressor as the final stage of the high-pressure compressor. The vaned diffuser in a centrifugal compressor stage maintains an integral role in determining the extents of the operating range as well as conditioning the flow for the downstream combustor. Thus, it is critical to understand the aerodynamics and performance of the vaned diffuser across the entire compressor operating range.</p> <p>This investigation focused on seven compressor operating points at the stage’s design corrected speed, which ranged from choked flow to the minimum mass flow rate before rotating stall. Steady-state and unsteady performance data were acquired to study the aerodynamics at each operating point as well as the steady-state performance of the vaned diffuser. Laser Doppler velocimetry, high-frequency pressure transducers, and additive manufacturing techniques were all implemented to acquire data in the research compressor.</p> <p>Unsteady velocity measurements were acquired in the vaneless space and were used to quantify the change in diffuser inlet incidence as the stage mass flow rate changes. The impeller exit jet and wake were compared at each operating point to understand the effect of these flow structures on the spanwise incidence profile. Steady-state performance metrics for the vaned diffuser were compared with the change in incidence to assess the effect of incidence on performance. Maximum static pressure recovery and minimum total pressure loss occurred at the maximum incidence operating point. </p> <p>The chordwise static pressure distribution is critical for health monitoring of the polymer, additive manufactured diffuser vanes. Steady-state and unsteady pressure measurements were acquired along the diffuser vane surface to assess the change in the aerodynamic lift force across the compressor operating range as well as the static pressure differential across the vane leading edge. The maximum unsteady lift on the diffuser vanes was up to 34% greater than the steady-state lift force. Unsteady static pressure differentials across the diffuser vane leading edge were similar to the steady-state values, but they were marginally greater across the entire examined operating range. These unsteady pressure measurements were acquired with high-frequency response pressure transducers installed along the diffuser vane surfaces. These transducers were also used to study the rotating stall and surge behavior of the investigated centrifugal compressor stage. This centrifugal compressor stage exhibits a spike-type rotating stall pattern at the onset of stage instability, which rapidly evolves into full flow reversal with several surge cycles. During these surge cycles, the diffuser vane leading edges are subject to a 20 psid static pressure differential. </p> <p>A computational model was used to predict the compressor flow at three different operating points. This model utilized the BSL-EARSM turbulence model, and it included surface roughness and an experimentally measured shroud thermal profile. The model accurately predicted the diffuser inlet flow angles near the shroud, but it predicted more radial flow near midspan. The diffuser vane leading edge static pressure differential was predicted within 1 psid at higher aerodynamic loading conditions. The differences between the computationally predicted and experimentally measured flow are attributed to difficulties associated with modelling the rate of mixing within the flow.</p>

Design of a centrifugal compressor impeller for micro gas turbine application

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The use of micro gas turbines (MGTs) for the propulsion of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has become an industry standard. MGTs offer better performance vs. weight than similar sized, internal combustion engines. The front component of an MGT serves the purpose of compressing air, which is subsequently mixed with a fuel and ignited to both power the turbine which drives the compressor, and to produce thrust. Centrifugal compressors are typically used because of the high pressure ratios they deliver per stage. The purpose of this project was to design a centrifugal compressor impeller, and to devise a methodology and the tools with which to perform the aforementioned. A compressor impeller adhering to specific performance and dimensional requirements was designed. The new compressor was designed using a mean-line performance calculation code. The use of the code was vindicated through comparison with the results from a benchmark study. This comparison included mean-line, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD), and experimental results: the new design mean-line results were compared to the results of CFD simulations performed on the same design. The new design was optimised using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Genetic Algorithm. Prior to and during optimisation, the ANN was trained using a database of sample CFD calculations. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was done on the optimised impeller geometry to ensure that failure would not occur during operation. According to CFD results, the final design delivered good performance at the design speed with regards to pressure ratio, efficiency, and stall margin. The mechanical stresses experienced during operation were also within limits. Experimental results showed good agreement with CFD results of the optimised impeller. Hierdie eienskap verseker dat mikrogasturbines as aandryfmotors vir onbemande vliegtuie uiters voordelig is. Die voorste komponent van ‟n mikrogasturbine dien om lug saam te pers, wat dan met brandstof gemeng en daarna aan die brand gesteek word om krag aan die kompressor en stukrag te voorsien. Sentrifugaalkompressors word tipies gebruik as gevolg van die hoë drukverhoudings wat hierdie komponente per stadium kan lewer. Berekenings Vloeidinamika resultate het getoon dat die finale rotor ontwerp ‟n goeie werkverrigting lewer by die ontwerpspoed, met betrekking tot drukverhouding, bennutingsgraad, en stakingsmarge. Eksperimentele resultate het goeie ooreenstemming met die Berekenings Vloeidinamika resultate van die geoptimeerde rotor getoon. Cost model for bipolar plate manufacture

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis gives a cost model for the manufacture of bipolar plates in South Africa. The methods for the manufacture considered are machining, using a micro-milling machine, and compression moulding. The focus of this thesis is on compression moulding. Details of the work done towards developing and validating the models are described, and then the cost models are discussed in detail. The results of the analysis done using the cost model is given with attention paid to the effect of changing design parameters, such as channel size and flow field area, and of the cost of production for both methods over various production volumes. The thesis concludes that compression moulding becomes the better option for production volumes greater than 324 bipolar plates, with a cost that eventually reaches close to R140 per plate for high enough production volumes (over 5000). The cost to produce 1000 plates using compression moulding is estimated at R294 per plate. An increase of the channel size gives a small reduction in the total cost, while the increase in cost with an increase in flow field area is large. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis gee 'n koste-model vir die vervaardiging van bipolêre plate in Suid- Afrika. Die vervaardigingsmetodes wat oorweeg word, is masjinering deur 'n mikro-freesmasjien en persvorming. Die fokus van hierdie tesis is op persvorming. Die besonderhede van die ontwikkeling en validering van die modelle word beskryf, en daarna word die modelle in besonderhede beskryf. Performance evaluation of a micro gas turbine centrifugal compressor diffuser

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Micro gas turbines used in the aerospace industry require high performance with a compact frontal area. These micro gas turbines are often considered unattractive and at times impractical due to their poor fuel consumption and low cycle efficiency. This led to a joint effort to investigate and analyze the components of a particular micro gas turbine to determine potential geometry and performance improvements. The focus of this investigation is the radial vaned diffuser which forms part of a centrifugal compressor. The size of the diffuser is highly constrained by the compact gas turbine diameter. The micro gas turbine under consideration is the BMT 120 KS. The radial vaned diffuser is analyzed by means of 1-D and 3-D (CFD) analyses using CompAero and FINETM/Turbo respectively. The aim is to design a diffuser that maximizes the total-to-static pressure recovery and mass flow rate through the compressor with minimal flow losses. An experimental test facility was constructed and the numerical computations were validated against the experimental data. Three new diffusers were designed, each with a different vane geometry. The static-to-static pressure ratio over the radial diffuser was improved from 1.39 to 1.44 at a rotational speed of 120 krpm. The static pressure recovery coefficient was improved from 0.48 to 0.73 with a reduction in absolute Mach number from 0.47 to 0.22 at the radial diffuser discharge. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Mikro-gasturbines wat in die lugvaart industrie gebruik word, vereis ‘n hoë werkverrigting met ‘n kompakte frontale area. Hierdie gasturbines word menigmaal onaantreklik geag weens swak brandstofverbruik en n lae siklus effektiewiteit. Dit het gelei tot ‘n gesamentlike projek om elke komponent van ‘n spesifieke mikro-gasturbine te analiseer en te verbeter. Die fokus van dié ondersoek is die radiale lem diffusor wat deel vorm van ‘n sentrifugaalkompressor. Die deursnee van die diffusor word deur die kompakte gasturbine diameter beperk. Die mikro gasturbine wat ondersoek word is die BMT 120 KS. Die radiale lem diffusor word geanaliseer deur middel van 1-D en 3-D (BVD) berekeninge met behulp van CompAero en FINETM/Turbo onderskeidelik. Performance improvement of the Rover 1S/60 Gas Turbine Compressor

This has led to the need to investigate and analyse the effect of the solar receiver on the gas turbine cycle. The aim of this thesis is to construct an experimental gas turbine setup to accommodate further research on utilizing solar energy to power gas turbines. The gas turbine under consideration is the Rover Gas Turbines 1S/60. The focus of this investigation is the centrifugal compressor of the gas turbine. An increase in static pressure is required for the gas turbine to cope with anticipated pressure drops in the central receiver that will be part of the gas turbine cycle. The standard compressor design is analysed by means of 3-D (CFD) analysis using CFX® and experimental data. The new centrifugal compressor is designed by means of 1-D and 3-D (CFD) analysis using CompAero and CFX®. The aim is to design a compressor that maximizes the total-to-static pressure ratio. The size of the compressor is highly constrained by the geometry parameters of the gas turbine. Since the turbine rotor will remain unchanged, the power input, mass flow rate and rotational speed must stay the same. The experimental setup was build and the numerical results of the standard compressor were validated against the experimental results. A new centrifugal compressor was designed. The total-to-static pressure ratio was increased from 2.50 to 3.30 at an operating speed of 46 krpm. The efficiency of the compressor was improved from 63.8% to 85.6%. The input power of the new compressor design deviated 1.6% from the set benchmark, and 1.3% from the numerical data of the standard compressor. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die gebruik van gasturbines in sonkragstasiesiklusse met ’n sentrale ontvanger het gegroei tot ’n gewilde navorsingsonderwerp. Dit het gelei tot die behoefte om die effek van die sonontvanger op die gasturbinesiklus te ondersoek en te analiseer. Die doel van hierdie tesis is om ’n eksperimentele gasturbine opstelling te bou vir verdere navorsing oor die benutting van sonenergie om ’n gasturbine aan te dryf. Die gasturbine in oorweging is die Rover Gas Turbines 1S/60. Die fokus van hierdie ondersoek is die sentrifugale kompressor van die gasturbine. ’n Toename in statiese druk word benodig vir die gasturbine om die verwagte drukverlies in die sentrale ontvanger, wat deel uit maak van die gasturbinesiklus, te hanteer. Baigiamajame magistro darbe yra pateikti bešvaistiklio eksperimentinio kompresoriaus triukšmo lygio, vibracinio aktyvumo, elektros energijos sąnaudų, našumo tyrimų rezultatai. Tyrimams atlikti buvo suprojektuotas ir sukonstruotas specialus tyrimų stendas bei sudarytos tyrimų metodikos, parinkta tyrimų įranga. Eksperimentai buvo atliekami, esant skirtingiems kompresoriaus sukimosi greičiams ir keičiant slėgį, suspausto oro sistemoje. Triukšmo tyrimai buvo atlikti keliuose skirtinguose matavimo taškuose, vibracinis aktyvumas matuojamas keliomis skirtingomis koordinačių ašių kryptimis. Darbą sudaro 7 dalys: įvadas, mokslinės literatūros, susijusios su tiriamuoju objektu, apžvalga, tiriamos problemos analizė ir pagrindimas, teorinis pagrindimas, eksperimentiniai tyrimai ir jų rezultatų įvertinimas, lyginamoji analizė, išvados ir pasiūlymai, literatūra. Atskirai pridedami darbo priedai. / The data of noise level, vibration activity, used electric power, duty research of crank less mechanism are submitted in the final thesis for the master’s degree. For research making was designed and constructed a special test stand, and scheduled research methodology. Experiments were carried out at different speeds of compressors and compressed air system pressure. Noise tests were carried out at several different points of measurement, vibration activity - a number of different coordinate axes. Structure: introduction, review of scientific literature related to the investigating object, analysis and justification of the investigated problem, theoretical justification, experiments and their evaluation of the results, comparative analysis, conclusions and suggestions, references.
