Trata-se de uma investigação que resgata as premissas teóricas de Habermas, como base conceitual e como identificação das possíveis contribuições da sua teoria para a fundamentação de um projeto educativo crítico-emancipatório baseado no reconhecimento intersubjetivo das pretensões de validade do agir comunicativo. Com o referencial do potencial crítico e reflexivo da modernidade, continuado por Habermas na Teoria do Agir Comunicativo, o estudo salienta a relevância do consenso como um critério fundamental para o desenvolvimento de uma ação educativa emancipatória / Abstract: In the format of a theoretical-conceptual research, under the title "The consensus in the Theory of the Act of Habermas and its implications for the Education", the present thesis tries to elucidate, through explicit of the consensus concept, some of the more important habermasian theory aspects for the contemporary education. It is an investigation that rescues Habermas' theoretical premises, like conceptual base and as possible contributions identification of his theory for the development of an educational project critic-emancipatory based on recognition inter-subjective of the validity pretenses of the communicative act. For thesis demonstration effect, the author bases his arguments in the consensus concept that allows you to analyze the contemporaneousness crisis impacts to the debate light that is established between modernity and post-modernity. Opinions and Preferences as Socially Distributed Attitudes

The dissertation focuses on how to best represent the consensus and attitude dynamic of a group given the attitudes of its individuals. This is done in the Bayesian epistemology framework using pooling with imprecise probabilities, and in utility theory extending Harsanyi's aggregation theorem to characterize other directed attitudes like spite and altruism. The final part of the dissertation considers attitudes within social networks and provides explanations and simulation models for online segregation and tribalism as well as the spread of rumors through contagion. The dissertation hopes to contribute to foundational issues like that of epistemic consensus, but also to new emerging phenomena in social epistemology.

Consociational democracy : the model and its relevance to conflict regulation in South Africa

Bibliography: pages 180-190. / The purpose of this paper is to survey the literature of consociational theory, assess its validity as a conceptual model, and to analyse both its relevance and utility as a potential framework of conflict regulation in South Africa. The paper is divided into five chapters: an overview of consociational theory as it is presented by its leading exponents; a critique of the theory's methodology and major suppositions; a modified model of consociational democracy in light of the theoretical criticisms; an application and evaluation of the modified model to South Africa; and, finally, some observations about consociational democracy's possible viability as a transitory mechanism between the present system and black majority-rule in a unitary system. The objective is to illustrate that consociational government is, normatively, an inadequate constitutional system for South Africa and, more broadly, for polities characterised by extreme ethnic or economic conflict.

Predicting strength of consensus in small groups

This study was conducted to determine if the strength of consensus in small groups could be predicted from group members' perceptions of information usefulness and shared understanding. Eight groups of five and two groups of four subjects participated in a group consensus exercise designed to allow mathematical measurement of the consensus achieved. The subjects also completed questionnaires designed to measure their perceptions of information usefulness, shared understanding, and strength of consensus. The findings of this study suggest that shared understanding is a strong predictor of the strength of consensus while information usefulness is only slightly predictive. This study is the first step toward development of management tools to measure consensus in small groups when no mathematical algorithm is possible. The goal of this and further research is to provide managers with a way to know how strongly workers support actions they have agreed· to take in order to make participatory management more effective. Tools such as these can also be used in the public policy arena. When groups of concerned citizens are brought together, these toolS can be used to see if the consensus achieved is really representative of everyone's views. / Master of Science

The effects of incentive structures and conflict management on perceived decision quality and the strength of consensus

This study investigated the effects of group and individual incentive structures as well as collaborative and competitive conflict management strategies on consensus and perceived decision quality. Results showed group incentives encouraged collaborative conflict management while group incentives and collaborative conflict management both encouraged the perception of consensus and decision quality. At the same time individual incentives encouraged competitive conflict management while individual incentives and competitive conflict management each reduced the perception of consensus and decision quality. I used questionnaires to measure the perception of conflict management strategies, consensus, and decision quality with a sample size of 120. I wasn't able to substantiate the same hypotheses relating to actual consensus, which I measured mathematically on the group level through a rank procedure. The sample size for actual consensus was 30 groups. In an exploratory effort to understand a behavioral aspect of decision making groups, I found that individuals I verbal behaviors concerning how often they had spoken during the group process correlated significantly with individuals' perception of how influential individuals were on the final group ranking. In the experiment, I used 120 students from an introductory psychology class at Virginia Tech. The sample consisted of 63 males and 57 females. All subjects watched the movie called "12 Angry Menll and were asked to decide by themselves on the order in which the 12 jurors would change their vote from guilty to not guilty. I formed groups of four, and exposed them to either group incentives or individual incentives before they were asked to make a group decision on the same ranking. I intended group and individual incentive structures to cause collaborative and competitive conflict management strategies, respectively. / Master of Science

Interior design creativity: the development and testing of a methodology for the consensual assessment of projects

The purposes of this study were: (1) to adapt the Consensual Technique for Creativity Assessment (Amabile, 1982; 1983a) methodology for use in the domain of interior design; and (2) to provide evidence for reliability and construct validity of the methodology. Participants were subjects who created the 18 projects used in the study, and judges, the 44 professional interior design experts who rated the projects. The sample of subjects was comprised of interior design students at a FIDER-accredited institution in the Mid-Atlantic region. The judges sample included two sub-categories: Educators (13) who were Corporate members of IDEC; and Designers (31) who were Professional members of ASID. Projects were assessed by subjective ratings on the Dimensions of Judgment for Interior Design creativity, the list of 12 rating criteria adapted from Amabile. Ratings were collected in judging sessions at three regional sites. / Ph. D.

Consensus decision-making at Guilford College: a case study analysis

The Quaker tradition of consensus decision-making provides a provocative approach to internal governance in Quaker related colleges and universities. Guilford College, a small, private, liberal arts college with Quaker roots in Greensboro, North Carolina, employs the consensus model in college governance. Guilford College recently used the consensual model while developing a policy on open source containers of alcohol, particularly small kegs of beer, in College residence halls. This research project of the consensual process at Guilford College used qualitative research methods and examined the extent to which the consensual process was actually employed in a particular policy making event. A written summary of the actual case was developed followed by a series of interviews with students, administrators, and staff. These interviews were targeted at assessing the extent to which consensus decision-making was used to create the policy permitting open source containers of beer in the residence halls. The research project findings indicate that Guilford College employs elements of the consensual model in student affairs policy making while there also exists elements of a more bureaucratic model. While not indicative of true Quaker consensus decision-making as indicated by the literature in this area, many of the anticipated outcomes associated with consensus decision-making are exhibited by the participants of this particular consensual process. The findings offer, for student affairs practitioners at colleges and universities, a provocative model of alternative decision-making in working with students. Additional research about the effects of consensual decision-making on student learning and personal growth would be helpful to student affairs professionals as they continue their work with college students. / Master of Arts
