Work-life interaction among Afrikaans speaking secondary school educators in the North West Province : a phenomenological study / Chenell Buys

Buys, Chenell January 2006 (has links)
In contemporary society, work and home represent the two most significant domains in the life of a working individual. In order to help an individual live optimally, the work and personal life domains must no longer be regarded as separate domains, but as highly interrelated. The work and personal life domains must influence each other in a positive way to assist the individual in his daily responsibilities at work and in his personal life. A high proportion of employed workers, however, have serious difficulties in combining obligations in their work and personal lives. Educators are one of the occupations that may find it difficult to integrate their work and personal life. The objectives of this research were to determine how Afrikaans-speaking educators experienced Work-Personal Life Interaction (WPLI), to determine the domains in Afrikaans-speaking educators' lives that could interact with one another, to determine the main antecedents and consequences of WPLI for Afrikaans-speaking educators and to investigate which strategies Afrikaans-speaking educators used to deal with WPLI issues. A non-probability purposive voluntary sample (N = I I) of Afrikaans-speaking secondary school educators was used from the North West Province (in the Potchefstroom and Promosa areas). A qualitative design from a phenomenological approach was used to determine educators' experience of WPLI. Content analysis was used to analyse, quantify and interpret the research data. The results indicated that educators experienced certain aspects in their work environment and personal lives as demanding. Certain dimensions were identified in both their work and personal lives. As a result of a demanding work environment, they experienced time and strain-based conflict between their work and personal lives. However, it was found that educators possessed various factors that facilitated their WPLI and strategies they used to deal with WPLI issues. Recommendations were made for the organisation and for future research. / Thesis (M.Comm. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

Work-personal life interaction of Afrikaans speaking police officers : a phenomenological study / Eva Kefilwe Sekwena

Sekwena, Eva Kefilwe January 2006 (has links)
Effectiveness, productivity and motivation of police members are important factors that contribute to a country's stability, economic growth and development. As such, understanding experiences that police members might have with regard to the relationship between their work and personal life is the main focus area in this study. The objectives of this study were to determine how Afrikaans speaking police members experience work-personal life interaction, and secondly, to determine the main dimensions in the lives of Afrikaans speaking police members that is in interaction with each other, and thirdly, to determine the major antecedents and consequences of work-personal life for Afrikaans speaking police members, and fourthly, to determine which strategies Afrikaans speaking police members use to deal with work-personal life issues. Unstructured interviews were conducted with ten males and females in the police stations based in the Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp areas. Qualitative interviews based on the phenomenological paradigm, were used to determine police officers perception regarding work and personal life interaction. A Content analysis was used to analyse, quantify and interpret the research data. Police members reported experiencing their work as stressful, in that it interfered negatively with their lives and also had certain health implications. They further experienced some aspects in their personal lives (e.g., household duties, family responsibilities) interfering with their work. Furthermore, they reported using certain strategies (e.g., communication, support from a spouse) as a way of bettering the interaction between their work and personal lives. Recommendations for future research were made, / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

Soukromoprávní důsledky dohod omezujících hospodářskou soutěž v právu Evropské unie / Private Enforcement of European Union Antitrust Law

Mačát, Jiří January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the competition law of the European Union, namely with the private consequences of cartel agreements (as defined in Article 101, paragraph 1, TFEU) and with their enforcement. It understands its subject widely and therefore it is not concerned only with private consequences and their enforcement but it also analyses the nature of prohibition and voidness of such agreements on the basis of a causal relationship between these legal concepts and respective consequences. Furthermore, it describes the private enforcement of EU competition law (which is legal instrument to enforce claims that emerge from private law consequences) not only from the perspective of its topic but also in terms of its relationship to the public enforcement. It also deals with the interaction between these enforcement systems. Chapter 2 of the thesis provides a basic introduction to the topic of cartel agreements governed by the EU law. It describes prohibition of these agreements under Article 101 paragraph 1 TFEU and deals with their voidness under paragraph 2 ibid. It concentrates on the later because of the considerable uncertainties about its nature in terms of interpretation of its legislation, absoluteness and possibility to severe void provisions from the rest. Chapter 3 covers the consequences of...

Incidence du passage obligatoire aux normes comptables IAS / IFRS sur le risque d'instabilité bancaire / Consequences of the mandatory IAS / IFTS accounting standards adoption on the risk of bank instability

Clavier, Julien 06 December 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, we study the economic consequences, in terms of instability, of the mandatory IAS/IFRS adoption in the banking industry. The thesis is organized as follows. In a first part (Chapter I), we develop a theoretical framework whose purpose is to understand the mechanisms through which the mandatory IAS/IFRS adoption by banks may influence the probability of occurrence of a banking crisis. At this stage, we show that several arguments, derived from the contractual and informational perspectives of accounting, can be mobilized in order to justify the hypothesis that the mandatory IAS/IFRS adoption has a positive or a negative influence on banking stability. The second part of the thesis (Chapters II, III, IV) propose three empirical studies, based on samples of European banks, related to some of the issues discussed in the first part. The results of these studies indicate that: (1) banks have improved capital adequacy following the IAS/IFRS adoption, due to a better market discipline in an IFRS environment; (2) banks constrained in liquidity (and only these banks) have increased their credit supply following the IAS/IFRS adoption, due to an easier access to external resources in an IFRS environment; (3) fair value accounting does not contribute to degrade the explanatory power of a default risk model based on accounting variables. These results, consistent with a positive influence of the IAS/IFRS adoption on bank stability, tend to moderate the criticisms expressed against IFRS accounting standards, in the background of the recent global banking crisis.

Automates cellulaires : dynamique directionnelle et asymptotique typique

Delacourt, Martin 05 December 2011 (has links)
Cellular automata are simultaneously a model of parallel computation, a complex system and a dynamical system. They are synchronous and time is discrete. The functions defined by their application is the result of the synchronous application of the same local rule everywhere. The limit set is a classical tool of dynamical systems theory, it is the set of states the system can reach arbitrarily late. It has been studied often in the particular case of cellular automata and there are numerous results. Amongst them, a Rice's theorem proved by Jarkko Kari states that any non-trivial property of limit sets of cellular automata is undecidable. In this thesis, we do not consider the classical limit set, as we add a measure on the space of states of the system. Thus, we get a set which contains behaviors that appear arbitrarily far and often. This set is named mu-limit set and was introduced in 2000 by Petr Kurka and Alejandro Maass. Most of the results on limit sets cannot be directly adapted for mu-limit sets. We study the family of all mu-limit sets of cellular automata. We show that under some constraints on the dynamics, the mu-limit set can be entirely described. We then produce a classification of cellular automata according to these constraints. In the general case, we prove the existence of cellular automata whose mu-limit sets are among a large set of complex sets. We finally prove Rice's theorem for mu-limit sets: any non-trivial property is undecidable.

Relação dose-efeito da radioterapia no complexo maxilo-mandibular achados em radiografia panorâmica / Dose-effect relationship of radiotherapy in the maxillo-mandibular complex findings in panoramic radiography

Faria, Vanessa de Araujo 01 February 2019 (has links)
Head and neck neoplasms present a worldwide incidence and are considered a public health problem. The late diagnosis of carcinomas is still a reality, implicating in thera-pies such as radiotherapy. This antineoplastic therapy can cause several side effects such as: mucositis, difficulty in swallowing, alteration or loss of taste, xerostomia, tris-mus, radiation caries, osteoradionecrosis, alterations of the periodontal ligament and opportunistic infections. The adverse effects of radiotherapy instituted for the treatment of patients with cancer of the head and neck region can significantly interfere in the quality of life of these individuals, causing possible bone and dental changes in those that affect the soft parts. Among them we can mention mucositis, hyposialia, agenesis, radiation caries, trismus and osteoradionecrosis (ORN). The latter constitutes a seri-ous complication and is difficult to treat. The present study aims to evaluate the dose-effect relationship of head and neck radiotherapy, considering the teeth and bone structures of the maxillo-mandibular complex, evaluating and exploring the impact of tumor size, its distribution and dosimetry in the mandibular nipple complex of patients submitted to CCP radiotherapy. The IMRT performed a better comparison procedure when compared to what is more difficult to see on radiographs when compared to toxicity in adjacent healthy systems. From the results obtained, the effects of radio-therapy can cause changes in the structure of the CMM, besides being responsible for the tumor, and the oncologists. It is necessary that dental professionals guide and withdraw care for the treatment of head and neck radiotherapy.

Acidentes de trânsito com adultos e suas consequências após a alta hospitalar / Traffic accidents with adults and their consequences after hospital discharge

Magalhães, Ana Paula Nogueira de 20 February 2014 (has links)
Introduction: Road traffic accidents are one of the major health problems today, affecting mainly adults in their productive life. Besides the deaths, these events can result in disability and other implications for the victims and their families. Objective: the present study aimed at evaluating the road traffic accidents and their consequences in adults after hospital discharge. Method: This is a quantitative study, a retrospective cohort conducted in the town of Arapiraca, Alagoas, 2011. Data were obtained through the records of assisted victims of road traffic accidents in the pre hospital care service to the emergency unit of reference for trauma and during home interviews. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression were used. Results: Among the victims studied (n=105), were predominantly male (72,3%), aged 20-29 years old (42,8%), mulatto (63,8%), low education (61,9%), married/common-law marriage (59%) and working mainly as sellers (18,1%). Motorcyclists are predominant among the victims (84,7%), with the fall of the motorbike the most frequent type of accident (35,2%). Traffic accidents occurred mainly on Sundays (29,5%) in the night time (35,2%) and urban area (66,6%). The fracture was the most common injury (37,1%) and lower limbs (32,3%) the region most affected by trauma. The service performed by the prehospital care had an average of 38 (sd=14,6) minutes. As for the hospital stay, there was an average of 6,6 days (sd=11,4), while the most common procedures were the dressings and sutures (32,3%). It was identified by means of the Barthel Index, which, in the period between six and eighteen months after the accident, 33,3 % of patients had significant or total dependence. Skin color, type of accident, response time, transport time, procedures performed during hospital care, hospitalization and type of hospital output were the factors associated with functional dependence after the accident. Regarding the situation in productivity, it was found that 61% of the victims returned to work after trauma. Conclusions: The results of this study provide a structured overview of the consequences of road traffic accidents for the personal and professional lives of its victims and provide information for improving care and prevention strategies.

The logic of tact: How decisions happen in situations of crisis

Kornberger, Martin, Leixnering, Stephan, Meyer, Renate 01 February 2019 (has links) (PDF)
The mass-migration of refugees in the fall 2015 posed an immense humanitarian and logistical challenge: exhausted from their week-long journeys, refugees arrived in Vienna in need of care, shelter, food, medical aid, and onward transport. The refugee crisis was managed by an emerging polycentric and inter-sectoral collective of organizations. In this paper, we investigate how, during such a situation, leaders of these organizations made decisions in concert with each other and hence sustained the collective's capacity to act collectively. We ask: what was the logic of decision-making that orchestrated collective action during the crisis? In answering this question, we make the following contribution: departing from March's logics of consequences and appropriateness as well as Weick's work on sensemaking during crisis, we introduce an alternative logic that informed decision-making: the logic of tact. With this concept we (a) offer a better understanding of how managers make decisions under the condition of bounded rationality and the simultaneous transgression of their institutional identity in situations of crisis; and we (b) show that in decision-making under duress cognition is neither ahead of action, nor is action ahead of cognition; rather, tact explicates the rapid switching between cognition and action, orchestrating decision-making through this interplay.
