”Now I truly understand how it really was and why it became so terrible.” : A qualitative study about how students in secondary school think about studying history and moving towards history consciousness.

Johansson, Marielle January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to contribute to an increased awareness of how students perceive the subject of history and how they approach the subject of increasing their awareness, through meeting historical characters in novels and film. I am seeking the answer to what opinions students have about studying history, what experiences they have of novels and film as a means to teaching the subject and how they look at material that give life to the thoughts and feelings of historical people, aiming to increase historical awareness. The study is based on qualitative interviews with 15 students in secondary school, The interviews are based on open questions and originate from sociocultural perspective, with its base in phenomenology. The result indicates that students perceive that studying the subject is mainly about historical facts. Several students, and especially students with Swedish as a second language and students with language difficulties, mention that the subject is linguistically difficult, with hard to understand words and phrases. This seems to obstruct an increased awareness of history. The teachers role is considered important. Their capability to interact, explain and clarify is important to bring the subject alive. Students can see the benefits of novels and film to increase historical awareness and many wish for more of that kind of tuition to increase interest and perception. However, many find it difficult to see how this will fit in the time schedule.

A Refinement-Based Methodology for Verifying Abstract Data Type Implementations

Divakaran, Sumesh January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is about techniques for proving the functional correctness of Abstract Data Type (ADT) implementations. We provide a framework for proving the functional correctness of imperative language implementations of ADTs, using a theory of refinement. We develop a theory of refinement to reason about both declarative and imperative language implementations of ADTs. Our theory facilitates compositional reasoning about complex implementations that may use several layers of sub-ADTs. Based on our theory of refinement, we propose a methodology for proving the functional correctness of an existing imperative language implementation of an ADT. We propose a mechanizable translation from an abstract model in the Z language to an abstract implementation in VCC’s ghost language. Then we present a technique to carry out the refinement checks completely within the VCC tool. We apply our proposed methodology to prove the functional correctness of the scheduling-related functionality of FreeRTOS, a popular open-source real-time operating system. We focused on the scheduler-related functionality, found major deviations from the intended behavior, and did a machine-checked proof of the correctness of the fixed code. We also present an efficient way to phrase the refinement conditions in VCC, which considerably improves VCC’s performance. We evaluated this technique on a simplified version of FreeRTOS which we constructed for this verification exercise. Using our efficient approach, VCC always terminates and leads to a reduction of over 90% in the total time taken by a naive check, when evaluated on this case-study.

Basson, Eunice L. 30 June 2003 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / This thesis entitled The contribution of Erich Mayer towards the establishment of an aesthetic consciousness and the promotion of an art identity in South Africa to the end of the 1930s, is a study of the ideas, ideals and contributions of the German-Jewish artist Erich Mayer concerning the establishment of a national art identity in South Africa. Mayer was born in Germany in 1876. Because of ill health he came to South Africa, where he settled in 1898 and developed an affinity with the Afrikaner pioneers in the rural areas. This natural connection with the Afrikaner pioneers was the main motivation behind his participation in the Anglo-Boer War. With his sound European background and training at various art academies in Berlin and Stuttgart, he soon realised that a knowledge of European art history or any awareness of an aesthetic consciousness concerning the fine and applied arts was sadly lacking within the general South African community and more specifically amongst the early Afrikaners. As a student, Mayer developed a keen interest in traditional German arts and crafts, which, according to him, contributed to the specific national Germanic character. This interest prompted him to conduct research and document examples of folk art among the Afrikaners as well as other indigenous communities, in an attempt to establish an aesthetic awareness in South Africans, and more specifically among Afrikaners. Mayer was of the opinion that the development and marketing of these cultural objects and artefacts would contribute towards a unique art identity with a strong South African national character. Apart from his interests in the fine and applied arts, Mayer also researched the vernacular architecture, furniture design and household articles of both Afrikaner pioneers and Africans. He travelled widely in South Africa, researching his interests and presented lectures on these themes which he published in newspapers and magazines in an effort to create an awareness of the rich indigenous folk art. Mayer is in 1876 in Duitsland gebore. / History / D.
