Velocity modeling to determine pore aspect ratios of the Haynesville Shale

Worldwide interest in gas production from shale formations has rapidly increased in recent years, mostly by the successful development of gas shales in North America. The Haynesville Shale is a productive gas shale resource play located in Texas and Louisiana. It produces primarily through enhanced exposure to the reservoir and improved permeability resulting from horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Accordingly, it is important to estimate the reservoir properties that influence the elastic and geomechanical properties from seismic data. This thesis estimates pore shapes, which affect the transport, elastic, and geomechancial properties, from wellbore seismic velocity in the Haynesville Shale. The approach for this work is to compare computed velocities from an appropriate rock physics model to measured velocities from well log data. In particular, the self-consistent approximation was used to calculate the model-based velocities. The Backus average was used to upscale the high-frequency well log data to the low-frequency seismic scale. Comparisons of calculated velocities from the self-consistent model to upscaled Backus-averaged velocities (at 20 Hz and 50 Hz) with a convergence of 0.5% made it possible to estimate pore aspect ratios as a function of depth. The first of two primary foci of this approach was to estimate pore shapes when a single fluid was emplaced in all the pores. This allowed for understanding pore shapes while minimizing the effects of pore fluids. Secondly, the effects of pore fluid properties were studied by comparing velocities for both patchy and uniform fluid saturation. These correspond to heterogeneous and homogeneous fluid mixing, respectively. Implementation of these fluid mixtures was to model them directly within the self-consistent approximation and by modeling dry-rock velocities, followed by standard Gassmann fluid substitution. P-wave velocities calculated by the self-consistent model for patchy saturation cases had larger values than those from Gassmann fluid substitution, but S-wave velocities were very similar. Pore aspect ratios for variable fluid properties were also calculated by both the self-consistent model and Gassmann fluid substitution. Pore aspect ratios determined for the patchy saturation cases were the smallest, and those for the uniform saturation cases were the largest. Pore aspect ratios calculated by Gassmann fluid substitution were larger because the velocity is inversely related to the aspect ratio in this particular modeling procedure. Estimates of pore aspect ratios for uniform saturation were 0.051 to 0.319 with the average of 0.171 from the velocity modeling using the self-consistent model. For patchy saturation, the aspect ratios were 0.035 to 0.296 with a mean of 0.145. These estimated pore aspect ratios from the patchy saturation case within the self-consistent model are considered the most reasonable set of values I determined. This is because the most likely in-situ fluid distribution is heterogeneous due to the extremely low permeability of the Haynesville Shale. Estimated pore aspect ratios using this modeling help us to understand elastic properties of the Haynesville Shale. In addition, this may help to find zones that correspond to optimal locations for fracturing the shale while considering brittleness and in-situ stress of the formation. / text

När flera försäljningskanaler opererar under samma varumärke kan svårigheter uppstå i att förmedla en enhetlig bild av varumärket, vilket lyfts fram i befintlig litteratur kring multikanalförsäljning. Det finns dock inga tidigare studier som undersöker utmaningar i att förmedla en enhetlig bild av varumärket specifikt för företag som går från Clicks to Bricks. Based on the fact that Clicks to Bricks is a relatively new phenomenon thearea is fairly unexplored in the academic world, which means that further studies are needed toprovide a greater understanding of the phenomenon. Purpose: The study aims to provide a greater understanding of the phenomenon Clicks toBricks, by examining the reasons for pure e-tailers to add a physical store as a sales channel andhow they work to convey a consistent brand image. Completion: The study has the design of a multiple case study and has been conducted with aqualitative approach. The study's empirical data is collected from interviews with people onnine different companies that have gone from Clicks to Bricks. Conclusion: This study observes the fact that companies going from Clicks to Bricks haverecognized the importance of communicating a consistent brand across their sales channels.Companies have, however, started its work towards communicating a consistent image of thebrand at a late stage in the establishment process. The study identifies opportunities forimprovement in terms of conveying a consistent brand when it comes to companies going fromClicks to Bricks.

An autonomous long-term fast reactor system and the principal design limitations of the concept

The objectives of this dissertation were to find a principal domain of promising and technologically feasible reactor physics characteristics for a multi-purpose, modular-sized, lead-cooled, fast neutron spectrum reactor fueled with an advanced uranium-transuranic-nitride fuel and to determine the principal limitations for the design of an autonomous long-term multi-purpose fast reactor (ALM-FR) within the principal reactor physics characteristic domain. The objectives were accomplished by producing a conceptual design for an ALM-FR and by analysis of the potential ALM-FR performance characteristics. The ALM-FR design developed in this dissertation is based on the concept of a secure transportable autonomous reactor for hydrogen production (STAR-H2) and represents further refinement of the STAR-H2 concept towards an economical, proliferation-resistant, sustainable, multi-purpose nuclear energy system. The development of the ALM-FR design has been performed considering this reactor within the frame of the concept of a self-consistent nuclear energy system (SCNES) that satisfies virtually all of the requirements for future nuclear energy systems: efficient energy production, safety, self-feeding, non-proliferation, and radionuclide burning. The analysis takes into consideration a wide range of reactor design aspects including selection of technologically feasible fuels and structural materials, core configuration optimization, dynamics and safety of long-term operation on one fuel loading, and nuclear material non-proliferation. Plutonium and higher actinides are considered as essential components of an advanced fuel that maintains long-term operation. Flexibility of the ALM-FR with respect to fuel compositions is demonstrated acknowledging the principal limitations of the long-term burning of plutonium and higher actinides. To ensure consistency and accuracy, the modeling has been performed using state-of-the-art computer codes developed at Argonne National Laboratory. As a result of the computational analysis performed in this work, the ALM-FR design provides for the possibility of continuous operation during about 40 years on one fuel loading containing mixture of depleted uranium with plutonium and higher actinides. All reactor physics characteristics of the ALM-FR are kept within technological limits ensuring safety of ultra-long autonomous operation. The results obtained provide for identification of physical features of the ALM-FR that significantly influence flexibility of the design and its applications. The special emphasis is given to existing limitations on the utilization of higher actinides as a fuel component.

Approche cartésienne pour le calcul du vent en terrain complexe avec application à la propagation des feux de forêt

La méthode de projection et l'approche variationnelle de Sasaki sont deux techniques permettant d'obtenir un champ vectoriel à divergence nulle à partir d'un champ initial quelconque. Pour une vitesse d'un vent en haute altitude, un champ de vitesse sur une grille décalée est généré au-dessus d'une topographie donnée par une fonction analytique. L'approche cartésienne nommée Embedded Boundary Method est utilisée pour résoudre une équation de Poisson découlant de la projection sur un domaine irrégulier avec des conditions aux limites mixtes. La solution obtenue permet de corriger le champ initial afin d'obtenir un champ respectant la loi de conservation de la masse et prenant également en compte les effets dûs à la géométrie du terrain. Le champ de vitesse ainsi généré permettra de propager un feu de forêt sur la topographie à l'aide de la méthode iso-niveaux. L'algorithme est décrit pour le cas en deux et trois dimensions et des tests de convergence sont effectués. / The Projection method and Sasaki's variational technique are two methods allowing one to extract a divergence-free vector field from any vector field. From a high altitude wind speed, a velocity field is generated on a staggered grid over a topography given by an analytical function. The Cartesian grid Embedded Boundary method is used for solving a Poisson equation, obtained from the projection, on an irregular domain with mixed boundary conditions. The solution of this equation gives the correction for the initial velocity field to make it such that it satisfies the conservation of mass and takes into account the effects of the terrain. The incompressible velocity field will be used to spread a wildfire over the topography with the Level Set Method. The algorithm is described for the two and three dimensional cases and convergence tests are done.

Cette thèse étudie les impacts macroéconomiques des transferts de fonds dans les pays d'origine des migrants. Six chapitres traitent des problématiques liées à la croissance, à la volatilité et aux politiques publiques. Le premier chapitre s'intéresse aux effets des envois de fonds sur la croissance à travers leurs impacts sur la consommation, l'investissement et les exportations. Il montre que les transferts monétaires stimulent la demande interne et que les exportations sont évincées. Le deuxième chapitre examine les implications des envois de fonds sur l'économie de la Moldavie à l'aide d'un modèle stock-flux cohérent et suggère que les chocs externes se transmettent à l'économie moldave via les transferts des migrants. Le chapitre 3 souligne que la concentration des migrants dans un faible nombre de pays d'accueil et l'instabilité de ces derniers augmentent la volatilité des envois de fonds. Le chapitre 4 ajoute que des envois monétaires instables associés à des flux commerciaux importants entre le pays d'origine et les pays d'accueil accroissent la volatilité de la croissance dans les pays d'origine des migrants. Le chapitre 5 s'intéresse aux dépenses publiques de santé et montre que si les envois de fonds permettent aux ménages de financer des services de santé privés non couverts, ils créent également un effet d'éviction au détriment des dépenses de santé publiques. Enfin, le chapitre 6 met en lumière le rôle des envois monétaires sur le développement économique de la Moldavie. Il souligne que les revenus des ménages, mais également de l'État, dépendent des envois de fonds dont les fluctuations créent des incertitudes sur la pérennité du modèle économique moldave. / This thesis studies the impacts of remittances in migrants' origin countries. Six different chapters focus on economic growth, volatility and public policies. The first chapter aims to estimate the impacts of remittances on growth through several channels: households' consumption, investment and exports. It is shown that remittances stimulate internal demand, while exports are reduced. The second chapter proposes a stock-flow consistent model for Moldova and suggests that remittances spread external shocks to the Moldovan economy. Chapter three shows that migrants' concentration in few host countries, as well as their instability, increase the volatility of remittances. Chapter four stresses that instable remittances enhance output growth volatility in migrants' origin countries when associated with important trade flows between both origin and destination countries. The fifth chapter focuses on public health spending and shows that remittances increase out-of-pocket health expenditure while crowding-out public health expenditure. The last chapter highlights the role of remittances on the economic development of Moldova. It suggests that both households and government revenues depend on remittances, whose fluctuations cast doubts about the economic sustainability of the Moldovan model of development.

So we organize this work in two distinct parts. The first part is dedicated to the study of an impulsive optimal control problem where the usual reparametrization technique of the impulsive problem is used to obtain a regular problem. Then we provide consistent approximation results via Euler discretization in which a sequence of related approximated problems is obtained with the property that if there is a subsequence of processes which are optimal for the corresponding discrete problems which converge to some limit process, then the latter is optimal to the original reparametrized problem. From the reparametrized optimal solution we are able to provide the solution to the original impulsive problem. The second part is regarding the minimal time problem defined on stratified domains. We sate the problem and establish Hamilton-Jacobi inequalities. Effets des inhomogénéités nanométriques sur les propriétés magnétiques de systèmes magnétiques dilués / Effects of nanoscale inhomogeneities on the magnetic properties of diluted magnetic systems

Cette thèse est principalement consacrée à l'étude des inhomogénéités de taille nanométrique dans les systèmes magnétiques désordonnés ou dilués. La présence d'inhomogénéités, souvent mise en évidence dans de nombreux matériaux, donne lieu à des propriétés physiques intéressantes et inattendues. La possibilité de ferromagnétisme à l'ambiante dans certains matéraux a généré un grand enthousiasme en vue d'application dans la spintronique. Cependant, d'un point de vue fondamental la physique de ces systèmes reste peu explorée et mal comprise. Dans ce manuscrit, on se propose de fournir une étude théorique complète et détaillée des effets des inhomogenéités de tailles nanométriques sur les propriétés magnétiques dans les systèmes dilués. Tout d'abord, on montre que l'approche RPA locale autocohérente est l'outil le plus adapté et fiable pour un traitement approprié du désordre et de la percolation. Nous avons implémenté cet outil et étudié dans un premier temps, les propriétés magnétiques dynamiques d'un modèle Heisenberg dilué (couplages premiers voisins) sur un reseau cubique simple. Nous avons reproduit précisémment la disparition de l'ordre à longue portée au seuil de percolation et comparé ce travail à des études précédentes. Dans le cadre d'un Hamiltonien minimal (modèle $V$-$J$) nous avons ensuite étudié en détails les propriétés magnétiques de (Ga,Mn)As (température critique, excitations magnétiques, stiffness,..). Nous avons obtenu de très bon accords avec les calculs textit{ab initio} et les résulats expérimentaux. Finalement, nous avons étudié les effets des inhomogénéités dans les sytèmes dilués. Nous avons montré, qu'inclure des inhomogenéités pourrait s'averer être une voie très efficace et prometteuse pour dépasser l'ambiante dans de nombreux matériaux. Nous avons pu obtenir une augmentation colossale de la température critique dans certains cas comparée à celle des systèmes dilués homogènes. Nous avons atteint une augmentation de 1600% dans certains cas. Nous avons également analysé les effets des inhomogénéités sur les courbes d'aimantations, elles sont inhabituelles et peu conventionelles dans ces systèmes. Les spectres d'excitations magnétiques sont très complexes, avec des structures très riches, et présentent de nombreux modes discrets à haute energie. De plus, nos calculs ont montré que la ``spin-stiffness" est fortement supprimé par l'introduction d'inhomogénéités. Il reste encore de nombreuses voies à explorer, ce travail devrait servir de base à de futures études théoriques et expérimentales des systèmes inhomogènes. / This thesis is mainly devoted to the study of nanoscale inhomogeneities in diluted and disordered magnetic systems. The presence of inhomogeneities was detected experimentally in several disordered systems which in turn gave rise to various interesting and unexpected properties. In particular, the possibility of room-temperature ferromagnetism generated a huge thrust in these inhomogeneous materials for potential spintronics applications. However, a proper theoretical understanding of the underlying physics was a longstanding debate. In this manuscript we provide a detailed theoretical account of the effects of these nanoscale inhomogeneities on the magnetic properties of diluted systems. First we show the importance of disorder effects in these systems, and the need to treat them in an appropriate manner. The self-consistent local RPA (SC-LRPA) theory, based on finite temperature Green's function, is found to be the most reliable and accurate tool for this. We have successfully implemented the SC-LRPA to study the dynamical magnetic properties of the 3D nearest-neighbor diluted Heisenberg model. The percolation threshold is found to be reproduced exactly in comparison with previous existing studies. Following this, we discuss the essential role of a minimal model approach to study diluted magnetic systems. The one-band $V$-$J$ model, has been used to calculate the Curie temperature and the spin excitation spectrum in (Ga,Mn)As. An excellent agreement is obtained with first principles based calculations as well as experiments. Finally we propose an innovative path to room-temperature ferromagnetism in these materials, by nanoscale cluster inclusion. We find a colossal increase in $T_C$ of up to 1600% compared to the homogeneous case in certain cases. Also the spontaneous magnetization is found to exhibit anomalous non-mean-field like behavior in the presence of inhomogeneities. In addition we observe a complex nature of the magnon excitation spectrum with prominent features appearing at high energies, which is drastically different from the homogeneous case. Our study interestingly reveals a strong suppression of the spin-stiffness in these inhomogeneous systems. The results indicate toward the strong complexities associated with the interplay/competition between several typical length scales. We believe this work would strongly motivate detailed experimental as well as theoretical studies in this direction in the near future.

No primeiro capítulo, nós desenvolvemos estimadores intervalares que são robustos à presença de heteroscedasticidade. Esses estimadores são baseados em estimadores consistentes de matrizes de covariâncias propostos na literatura, bem como em esquemas bootstrap. A evidência numérica favorece o estimador intervalar HC4. O Capítulo 2 desenvolve uma seqüência corrigida por viés de estimadores de matrizes de covariâncias sob heteroscedasticidade de forma desconhecida a partir de estimador proposto por Qian eWang (2001). Nós mostramos que o estimador de Qian-Wang pode ser generalizado em uma classe mais ampla de estimadores consistentes para matrizes de covariâncias e que nossos resultados podem ser facilmente estendidos a esta classe de estimadores. Finalmente, no Capítulo 3 nós usamos métodos de integração numérica para calcular as distribuições nulas exatas de diferentes estatísticas de testes quasi-t, sob a suposição de que os erros são normalmente distribuídos. A development process for building adaptative software architectures / Un processus de développement d'architectures logicielles adaptatives

Les logiciels adaptatifs sont une classe de logiciels qui peuvent modifier leur structure et comportement à l'exécution afin de s'adapter à des nouveaux contextes d'exécution. Le développement de logiciels adaptatifs a été un domaine de recherche très actif les dix dernières années. Plusieurs approches utilisent des techniques issues des lignes des produits afin de développer de tels logiciels. Ils proposent des outils, des frameworks, ou des langages pour construire des architectures logicielles adaptatives, mais ne guident pas les ingénieurs dans leur utilisation. De plus, ils supposent que tous les éléments spécifiés à la conception sont disponibles dans l'architecture pour l'adaptation, même s'ils ne seront jamais utilisés. Ces éléments inutiles peuvent être une cause de soucis lors du déploiement sur une cible dont l'espace mémoire est très contraint par exemple. Par ailleurs, le remplacement de composants à l'exécution reste une tâche complexe, elle doit assurer non seulement la validité de la nouvelle version, mais aussi préserver la terminaison correcte des transactions en cours. Pour faire face à ces problèmes, cette thèse propose un processus de développement de logiciels adaptatifs où les tâches, les rôles, et les artefacts associés sont explicites. En particulier, le processus vise la spécification d'informations nécessaires pour construire des architectures logicielles adaptatives. Le résultat d'un tel processus est une architecture logicielle adaptative qui contient seulement des éléments utiles pour l'adaptation. De plus, un mécanisme d'adaptation est proposé basé sur la gestion de transactions pour assurer une adaptation dynamique cohérente. Elle assure la terminaison correcte des transactions en cours. Nous proposons pour cela la notion de dépendance transactionnelle : dépendance entre des actions réalisées par des composants différents. Nous proposons la spécification de ces dépendances dans le modèle de variabilité, et de l'exploiter pour décider des fonctions de contrôle dans les composants de l'architecture, des fonctions qui assurent une adaptation cohérente à l'exécution. / Adaptive software is a class of software which is able to modify its own internal structure and hence its behavior at runtime in response to changes in its operating environment. Adaptive software development has been an emerging research area of software engineering in the last decade. Many existing approaches use techniques issued from software product lines (SPLs) to develop adaptive software architectures. They propose tools, frameworks or languages to build adaptive software architectures but do not guide developers on the process of using them. Moreover, they suppose that all elements in the SPL specified are available in the architecture for adaptation. Therefore, the adaptive software architecture may embed unnecessary elements (components that will never be used) thus limiting the possible deployment targets. On the other hand, the components replacement at runtime remains a complex task since it must ensure the validity of the new version, in addition to preserving the correct completion of ongoing activities. To cope with these issues, this thesis proposes an adaptive software development process where tasks, roles, and associate artifacts are explicit. The process aims at specifying the necessary information for building adaptive software architectures. The result of such process is an adaptive software architecture that only contains necessary elements for adaptation. On the other hand, an adaptation mechanism is proposed based on transactions management for ensuring consistent dynamic adaptation. Such adaptation must guarantee the system state and ensure the correct completion of ongoing transactions.
