Is blood thicker than water? : A qualitative study of the family and the biological significance.Didanovic Nilsson, Lotta January 2015 (has links)
Titel: Is blood thicker than water? A qualitative study of the family and the biological significance. Author: Lotta Didanovic Nilsson The purpose of this study has been to investigate whether, and if so, why it is so important for individuals to get to know their biological parents. The point of departure has been people who have grown up with one of their biological parents and met the other biological parent only as an adult. I have chosen to look at what happens in this meeting and how the people involved reacted and were affected by this. What controls and shapes the individual/group, such as the media, family-policy, social structures and what is considered proper procedure in a certain context and at different levels will also be discussed. The study is qualitative with semi-structured interviews with six informants, myself included. Therefore, this thesis will be an auto-ethnography as my own history and my experience is lifted and analysed together with my informants’. The results show a multi-faceted picture where the conclusion I draw is that the biological plays an important role for the parent- and child-relationship but perhaps for other reasons than we have previously thought. It further requires a social context on a day to day-basis for this relationship to become something significant and deep.

The present PhD thesis in the field of Information and Communication Sciences analyzes media representations of foreign women in contemporary France. It entails communication, political and sociological approaches of the subject in light of cultural studies, colonial studies, postcolonial and gender studies. Also included is a detailed study of subalternity within the new representations of French women of foreign origin. The presented research is based on discourse and content analyses of newspaper articles published between 2007 and 2013, as well as on field surveys with participant observations, performed in several organizations. From media analyses and field analyses, representations of foreign women within novel political issues can be understood ; settings where the question of women’s bodies remains central. Using gender as an analytical grid is the basis of the reflections is this thesis. This allows a rethinking of the notions of power and domination in society. The inquiry also describes the transformation of social representations of women of foreign origin and the practice of gender as an instrument of power applied to the female body. A transformation that has evolved with political mutations in society. An in-depth study of the relationships between gender, sex, body and the concept of intersectionality leads to a multitude of constructions and unique identity models. Finally, the political upheavals and current practices of power stir up more than ever collective memories and identity issues in French society through a major investment in the question of women.

This work was formulated aiming to reduce the difficulties presented in the learning of geometry, and also to provide to the teachers of this field an extra didactic resource to work on this subject which is of total relevance in the teaching of Mathematics. We live in a real world, not in a virtual one. In addition to virtual demonstrations of flat and spatial figures, we can often construct them and make them real by hand, and thus collaborate with the development of the students' construction skills, and the learning becomes more pleasurable and more practical. Our general objective is to reaffirm that geometry is present everywhere, and everything around us has geometric forms, both in nature and in things produced by man in the course of the evolution of the human species. And our specific objectives are structured as follows: facilitate a better understanding of flat and spatial geometry for elementary, middle and high school students through geometric constructions; develop a more detailed study on this subject, aiming to collaborate with teachers who work in the teaching of geometry, and offer an additional didactic resource to facilitate the exposure of the geometry contents

An analysis of temporal relations in languages: a comparative study of Mandarin and isiXhosaMa, Xiujie 30 January 2013 (has links)
This study sought to investigate how temporal relations are expressed in Mandarin and isiXhosa. The objective was to compare how two typologically distinct languages, one isolating and the other agglutinating, cope with the encoding of situations that occur at different positions on the time line. Data was drawn from questionnaire responses from, and interviews with, isiXhosa speakers who provided translations of a wide range of sentences from English into isiXhosa. The study revealed that isiXhosa relies on the grammatical category – tense – to encode temporal relations, while Mandarin relies more on lexical and pragmatic devices – the use of temporal adverbials and the implication of aspectual markings – to locate a situation on the time line. Typically, each sentence in isiXhosa must be marked for tense: temporal adverbials are optional elements and used to more precisely locate the situation on the time line. By contrast, in Mandarin, temporal adverbials have a more central function in that they independently express different positions on the time line: without temporal adverbials, it is extremely difficult to locate a situation on the time line in some sentences. Another important difference between the two languages was revealed in this study: isiXhosa grammar allows speakers to talk about situations in terms of their distance (past or future) from the speech time whereas Mandarin grammar allows its speakers to talk about situations in terms of the internal properties (e.g. completed, ongoing, etc.) of those situations. The study revealed that isiXhosa and Mandarin are similar in one important respect: both languages have no formal properties, i.e. overt tense markers (isiXhosa) and compulsory temporal adverbials or other temporal devices (Mandarin) for marking the temporal location of present situations. The study also revealed that both languages encode ‘pastness’ in terms of whether or not the effects of the situation in question still remain at speech time.
