Language and Identity among Adolescent Heritage Spanish StudentsBryant, Julianne January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation describes the language and identity trajectories of twelve purposefully selected heritage Spanish adolescents who were currently studying in a heritage language program within an urban high school in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. These twelve students represented six sibling groups and five different nationalities, specifically Dominican, Ecuadorian, Puerto Rican, Salvadorian, and Venezuelan,. The research questions were: 1) How do Hispanic heritage students negotiate their bicultural/bilingual identities?; 2) What is the role of the heritage language in those negotiated identities?; 3) Do these negotiated identities influence their investment to maintain the heritage language?; 4) What are the linguistic manifestations of the Spanish spoken by these bilingual students? Findings of the study revealed that 1) the study participants negotiate their bicultural/bilingual identities in a variety of ways, 2) for some of these students, the heritage language is part of their `out of school' identities, 3) the dominant language ideologies of the school system have had a significant impact on the heritage students' investment in HL practice, and 4) although each participant's identity and linguistic trajectories are distinct, they each have maintained, to a greater or lesser degree, the aspectual preterit/imperfect contrast, and, at the same time have displayed some level of incomplete acquisition of the subjunctive mood. The implications of these findings as they relate to the fields of bilingualism, languages in contact and the developing theory of Heritage Language Acquisition are addressed in the concluding remarks. / Spanish

Contact Effects in Swedish Romani PhonologyLindbäck, Hannes January 2020 (has links)
This thesis examines possible contact effects in the segmental phonology in an idiolect of Swedish Romani. From data gathered from one speaker of Swedish Romani I describe the phonology on a segmental level and then compare this with the phonology of its progenitor, Proto-Northwestern Romani. The traces of interference could in almost every case be explained as features gained from contact with Swedish. When features were judged to have entered Swedish Romani from a different language, intense contact with Swedish could possible explain why these features have remained in Swedish Romani.

THE LINGUISTIC EXPERIENCE OF ITALIANS IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA, 1890-1914: LANGUAGE SHIFT AS SEEN THROUGH SOCIAL SPACESItaliano-McGreevy, Maria January 2013 (has links)
From 1890-1914, Argentina received a large influx of Italian immigrants who wanted to "hacer la América", or live the American dream of economic prosperity. With Italian immigrants representing nearly half of all immigrants entering Argentina, the government strived to create a new sense of Argentine pride and nationalism. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate and analyze the linguistic experience of Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires, Argentina, applying Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social space and linguistic markets, and contact language theories to explain the attrition and shift of the Italian language. This study identifies three relevant social spaces that contributed to the linguistic experience of Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires: 1). conventillos or immigrant housing 2.) school community, and 3.) mutual aid societies. Within each social space thrived a linguistic market which language played a key role in the way people interacted and identified with each other. First, the conventillos were part of an alternative linguistic market in which cocoliche, a transitional language, thrived as a way for Italians to communicate with immigrants from different countries. Second, the school community formed part of the legitimate linguistic market because education was mandated by the government. Third, the mutual aid societies formed part of the alternative linguistic market that not only helped immigrants adjust to their new home, but it also fostered a sense of common identity by renewing their traditional ties to their home country in addition to teaching standardized Italian to Italian immigrants who often spoke their own regional dialects. A comparison of the three social spaces and the role that the linguistic markets play in each of them shows that all three spaces, whether legitimate or alternative linguistic markets, were integral in the linguistic experience of the Italian immigrants and important factors in the attrition and shift of Italian to Spanish. / Spanish

Abstract: This work Is a pilot study of some aspects of phonology and morphology of Aché, an indigenous language spoken by approximately 300 fluent speakers in the oriental region of Paraguay. It presents a phonological study of the phonemic inventory as well as a study of suprasegmental phenomena such as nasalization, stress, syllable structure, and some considerations about minimal word constraints. In the second section of the descriptive part, I outline aspects of person and number agreement, tense-aspect-mood marking, followed by a description of passive constructions and a discussion on lexical categories of the Achá language. The preceding grammatical description is particularly relevant for a wider sociolinguistic discussion of language genesis and evolution. The historical, anthropological and linguistic literature of the past two centuries suggests the hypothesis that the Aché language might be a contact language based on the lexicon of Paraguayan Guarani. My work approaches this hypothesis from an interdisciplinary standpoint, and includes some ethnographic and historic information crucial for the understanding of a possible genesis of the Aché language. In the final section I review linguistic data - the results of my field research - that can contribute to that discussion. Specifically, inside the morphosyntactic subsystem of the Aché grammar, I observe changes that can be considered abrubt and therefore the result of possible non-linear transmission. The morphosyntactic subsystem contains reduced flexional morphemes if compared to the hypothesized lexifier language - Paraguayan Guarani. The remaining flexional morphemes changed both their phonological structure and their grammatical functions. In grammatical terms, the changes can be characterized as amplifications of morphosyntactic and semantic function and might be possibly understood as outcome of processes such as analogy and reinterpretation. / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

Spanglish. Les variations linguistiques dans l’espagnol des États-Unis / Spanglish. Linguistic variations in United States SpanishLemus Sarmiento, Aura 16 November 2013 (has links)
Situations of population contact imply social, cultural and linguistic dynamics from which the protagonists never remain unscathed. This is the case of Hispanics in the United States, whose contact with the US culture favored the development of a mixed culture and a linguistic phenomenon known as Spanglish. Spanglish evokes concurrently linguistic, social, cultural and political questions and the purpose of the present work is to elucidate its implications in linguistics. This study focuses on transfers from English into United States Spanish, and on how these variations obey the system’s parameters. The present analysis is the latest in a series of linguistic studies focused on the oneness of the sign. It is based on the principle that variations that appeared in United States Spanish are significant ; their emergence reveals the system’s inherent dynamics and challenges the immutable nature of the cultural and linguistic factors that define the Hispanic civilization.

Francouzské přejímky v jazyce současných českých médiích - lexikologická a sémantická analýza / French Loanwords in Today's Czech Media - Lexicological and Semantic AnalysisVeselá, Veronika January 2022 (has links)
This master's thesis deals with problematics of loanwords from French language in today's Czech media and it is divided in two parts: theoretical and practical part. First part, dedicated to theoretical explanation of the problematics on one hand, describes history of the development of the Czech language with regards to borrowing of foreign lexemes, especially focusing on French loanwords. On the other hand, it defines essential terms and provides linguistic basis for research that follows. Practical part first introduces detailed results of the research, which was lexical and semantic analysis of loanwords excerpted from three of this year's issues of Gurmet, a gastronomical magazine. Concerning methodology, a variety of lexicological and semantical publications or web tools were used to compose this thesis. Analysis attests that more than a half of given loanwords come from 19th century. Also, in the text material, there were found 17 borrowed lexical units with significant foreign traits and those were later lexicographically elaborated into a dictionary of neologisms. Furthermore, research and analysis that followed imply that from all of 207 excerpted lemmas only a small number of the examined Gallicisms adapted semantically into the system of Czech language, and on the opposite, all lexemes...
