Intercepting contamination : improving the water quality of the Vaal river network through self-replenishing natural systems in an urban-rural landscape

Grala, Jani January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation's urban vision looks at the environmental issues of land, water and the health of the people of Vanderbijlpark, all of which have been affected by heavy industry. The study sets out to address the deteriorating quality of the Vaal River's water and how this is affected by the tributaries feeding into it. This dissertation will focus on the remediation and monitoring of the contaminated water through an ecosystemic approach. The programme involves the removal of heavy metals from the industrial effluent from the surrounding heavy industry that flows into the Rietspruit Canal. The potential of micro-organisms, plants and insects will be explored as elements of a natural treatment system of the contaminated water. The site identified for the remediation processes is an abandoned parcel of land - a remnant of the natural landscape after urban sprawl. The algae and wetland treatment system will run through the facility, becoming the spine for the remediation process and movement through the facility. The production of silk, its uses and by-products will be integrated to support the overall system which treats the contaminated water. The facility aims to address the community's need to express their voice on environmental and health issues by integrating a community auditorium and exhibition space. The construction and materiality is grounded in the premise that the local companies will remain supportive and collaborative in the environmental intervention in the Rietspruit Canal system, into which they contribute considerable effluent. It will also be proposed that the local companies will fund and supply various steel products for the construction of the intervention. This will form part of the company's corporate social responsibility and a way of giving back to fringe communities affected by industry. / Mini Dissertation (MArch (Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Architecture / MArch (Prof) / Unrestricted

How companies bridge the gap between the formulation the implementation of sustainability strategies?

Tirado, Marcela, Salén, Rebecca January 2023 (has links)
Background: When shifting the company’s strategies to develop more sustainability conscious strategies, it can be challenging to effectively implement them if they are unaware of the level of complexity of the problem. Researchers have evidenced the lack of research regarding sustainability strategies’ implementation in practice. Thus, this study will investigate how companies implement their formulated sustainability strategies, including how challenges to sustainability strategy implementations are overcome. Purpose: The purpose is to investigate the formulation and the implementation of sustainability strategies focusing on how companies bridge the gap between the formulation and implementation of sustainability strategies. Method: To fulfil the purpose of this study, the authors adopt qualitative study approach using a multiple Case study design to investigate in depth the different factors that affect the process sustainability strategies. Primary data is collected through interviews with managers of seven Swedish companies. Conclusion: This study has identified that depending on the sustainability strategy approach, emergent or deliberate, impacts the challenges that companies may face when formulating and implementing sustainability strategies. Additionally, motivation and engagement, stakeholder pressure, knowledge sharing, and industry constraints are underlying challenges when implementation of sustainability strategies. For companies to bridge the gap, solutions have been suggested accordingly to the challenges.

Hållbarhetsstrategier i en infrastrukturindustri : En studie om Skanska och dess CR strategier

Björkman, Hanna, Jansson, Josefin January 2011 (has links)
This bachelor thesis in business economics raises the topic about Corporate Responsibility (CR), this topic is currently being discussed in a variety of channels and today an increasing number of companies are involved in corporate responsibility. How do Skanska work with sustainability and why are they doing this? It is also important to see the results of the work with sustainability will lead to. We will go into more depth in one of Skanska's projects, project M25, to investigate the CR strategies they use and see how they actually work with sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze how and why Skanska is working to implement CR policies in their operations and more specifically from the M25 project in order to achieve sustainable business development. Our main questions is; how and why does Skanska implement sustainability in their business and in the project M25 and what can the outcome of this sustainability lead to? The study is based on a qualitative method, we performed both an unstructured personal interview and a semi-structured interview. This is to get a deeper understanding of how and why the company Skanska is working on sustainability. We have done a literature study and we selected different theories and also used various documents from Skanska. Our conclusion is that Skanska uses several different strategies to achieve sustainable business development, for example, they have developed their own voluntary rules, follow different directives and standards and they have developed various techniques and tools. The conclusions we have drawn is that Skanska is working actively to identify its stakeholders and also takes account of stakeholders who do not have a direct link to the business. They work in a proactive manner through education, investigation and monitoring to achieve a sustainable business. Skanska has agreed that they are part of a larger context in which they affect individuals and agents. Skanska and the society will receive various benefits depending on which CR strategies Skanska uses.

Creating Change: An Examination of the Impact of Crisis and Inter-Sectoral Cooperation on Corporate Behavior

Hill, Katherine C January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Paul Gray / This thesis is a study of inter-sectoral collaboration and the impact of crises and social learning and cooperation initiatives on corporate change. The main purpose is to demonstrate how governments, corporations, and non-governmental organizations can most effectively work together to solve some of the world's most pressing development problems. Using case studies of extractive multinational corporations operating in Colombia, Papua New Guinea, and Nigeria, this paper presents support for the fact that crises are essential catalysts for corporate change. Moreover, analysis of these cases reinforces the critical role social learning and cooperation initiatives play in driving longterm improvements in corporate practice. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College. Omnes Pro Uno! Investors' Collaboration Networks to Influence Responsible Corporate Management

Lee, Jegoo January 2009 (has links)
Thesis advisor: William B. Stevenson / Thesis advisor: Sandra Waddock / The main purpose of this dissertation research is to understand the collaborative interactions among actors engaging in change efforts in the existing institutional arrangements. Specifically, this dissertation research sheds light on the collaboration networks of social investors who desire both their own financial benefits and stakeholder welfare, by filing shareholder resolutions to bring environmental or stakeholder concerns to the attention of corporate managers. My research strategy in this dissertation is to propose and write a theoretical study and two empirical studies. I propose in chapter 2 a conceptual and theoretical framework for inquiring into social investors' collaboration strategies to develop the field of shareholder resolutions on social issues. The key argument is researchers pay attention to focal actors, multiple actors, and the relationships among them to understand the social mechanisms which integrate active shareholders with the field of social resolutions. In order to determine social investors' strategies to initiate and mobilize their filing activities, based on the social movement perspectives and a social network approach, I propose four conceptual dimensions from the social movement perspectives: identity, social relationships, target identification, and issue framing. In two empirical studies, I test my propositions by analyzing 1650 shareholder resolutions filed by 267 social investors from 2002 to 2007. The first study presented in chapter 4 addresses who initiate social resolution filings, by examining determinants of social investors' proactive initiating activities. When religious investors have brokerage positions, their initiating activity of filing social resolutions are very proactive. However, social investors' range of stock ownership does not go along with their brokerage positions. These findings imply that leading social investors need to have brokerage positions when they have faith-based identity, but that they don't need social resources when they have enough financial resources, a wide range of stocks. The second study presented in chapter 5 explains how leading social investors attract to mobilize their potential followers. Interestingly, the reciprocation hypothesis, "give and take of co-filing support," is negatively supported, indicating a division of labor in the field of social resolutions. In addition, lead-filing social investors who successfully attract and mobilize other investors aim at target companies that are well known among other social investors, and frame issues in wide angles in their social resolutions. These empirical studies demonstrate that active social investors developed their collaboration networks dependent upon their faith-based identity, social relations, targets identification and issue framing strategies. In this dissertation, I assert the necessity and importance of studies on the activities of shareholders by demonstrating that some active investors have strategically led the socially responsible investment movement. This dissertation provides counter-evidence to the conventional assumption that corporate managers should ignore stakeholder welfare if they pursue shareholder value. It also demonstrates that the network-based movements can be a good platform for social change agents to develop their own fields. Strategically, as they interact with each other, small and weak actors can build their own field to collectively influence corporate management. In this sense, the network-based movements underscore the way the infrastructure of a field emerges. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. Business model change through embedding corporate responsibility-sustainability? : logics, devices, actor networks

Laasch, Oliver January 2018 (has links)
'The Company' had introduced 'Being Responsible' a program for the embedding of responsibility-sustainability. Corporate responsibility-sustainability here describes efforts to address entangled cares of responsibility and sustainability. The program showed potential to change the business model, which led to the research problem: 'How can responsibility-sustainability programs change business models?'In this thesis, business models are understood as three dynamically interlinked states: Logics, devices and actor networks. Business model change may happen through the embedding of responsibility-sustainability into any of these states, and through the dynamics between them. Main conceptual lenses are organizational institutionalism and actor-network theory, which are connected through a social constructionist philosophy. Qualitative methods used include an in-depth case study of The Company (104 interviews with 72 interviewees) and thematic analyses of business model descriptions (devices) of FTSE corporations (100 documents).Seven papers study distinct aspects of the research problem: Papers 1 and 2 provide a conceptual basis. Papers 3 and 4 study how the embedding of responsibility-sustainability into the FTSE100s' business model devices changed the logics they described. Papers 5-7 study embedding into The Company's business model actor network. I found how embedding of responsibility-sustainability into the three states of commercial business models happened through three processes: Blending of logics, combination of device elements and translation between actors. Such embedding of responsibility-sustainability led to misalignment and tensions between responsibility-sustainability and the dominant commercial logic. This misalignment in turn fueled the dynamics of change between logics, devices and actor networks. First, this thesis contributes to an emerging literature on the dynamics of business model logics, devices and actor networks. It makes explicit the distinction between these states and illustrates how their dynamics provide novel insight into business model change. Secondly, I showcase how actor-network theory may complement the activity systems study of business models as well as stakeholder thinking in responsibility-sustainability research. Insights into how to use devices to change business models and to embed responsibility-sustainability appear relevant for practitioners.

Alternatívne teórie firmy / Alternative theories of the firm

Pipíšková Slamková, Mária January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is focused on matters of alternative theories of a company in relation to their neoclasicistic model. It deals with view on profit maximization as traditional goal of a company and on different alternatives of this goal -- either reaching of satisfying amount of profit, or maximizing other economic indicators of a company or even on mission of a company to share with the community from its profit, which is above a company's primary function. This paper reviews function of a profit accross different theories and gives detailed overview on selected models of management and behavioral alternative theories. These points are later on followed by a section dedicated to corporate responsibility of companies. Its placing between alternative theories of company is preceded by an overview of relevant expert literature sources and by an overview of conditions, which current form and understanding of corporate social responsibility formed. The end of the paper is focused on JNJ Corporation and its environment, in which the company fulfills its social responsibility goals.

Corporate Responsibilityon the Media Sector : Study on the Corporate Responsibility Perceptions of Alma Media’s Stakeholders

Poukka, Riikka January 2010 (has links)
<p>Despite the globally growing interest in corporate responsibility (CR), there is little practical as wellas academic knowledge of CR practises in the media sector. The aim of this study is to make acontribution to the evolving understanding of what CR implies in the media sector by applying astakeholder approach to a case study, which is Alma Media, a Finnish media corporation. Firstly, from the corporate perspective, the objective of this study is to provide Alma Media with a CRagenda, based on the CR priorities defined in stakeholder interviews. Secondly, from a moretheoretical point of view, this study aims to evaluate the stakeholder theory as a means of definingthe CR characteristics of the media sector in Finland. The main body of the primary data is collected by 44 stakeholder interviews, supportedby participant observation at the case company. The data is structured with content analysis andanalysed according to the stakeholder categorisation of Mitchell, Agle and Wood (1997) in order toprioritise between the different stakeholders and their CR interests. The findings indicate Alma Media’s CR priorities are a mix of media ethics (reliability, responsible journalism, journalistic integrity), traditional CR issues (environment, personnel) andcultural responsibility (locality, citizenship). Most stakeholder demands concerns environmentalresponsibility. To understand media CR on a general, global level, further research is needed toconfirm the findings of this study and, particularly, to highlight the international differences andsimilarities in media CR.Concerning the theoretical objective of the study, the study concludes that the Mitchell,Agle and Wood model helps to identify the priority stakeholders and CR issues but fails to capturethe multi-dimensional nature of the power attribute and the role of stakeholder networks in themanagement of CR. Thus, stakeholder theory provides valuable insight into CR management butfurther research on stakeholder network models is needed.</p>
