Managing Aquatic Invasive Species in the United States by Harvesting them for Human Consumption

Recinos, Katherine 01 January 2013 (has links)
Marine and freshwater aquatic invasive species are a huge problem in the United States and its territorial waters with myriad ecological and economic impacts. Current management methods have fallen short. One possible solution is to harvest them for human consumption. This should be done through small scale, carefully regulated, scientifically based programs that are part of a larger overall management strategy. Four case studies (northern snakehead, European green crab, Asian carp, Chinese mitten crab) assessing edibility are included.

The Ecology of Yikes! Environmental Forces Alter Prey Perception of Predators

Smee, Delbert Lee 17 May 2006 (has links)
Hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria, are slow-moving organisms that are heavily preyed upon by both blue crabs and knobbed whelks in coastal Georgia. Hard clams are unable to escape from these predators, and when found, are commonly injured and/or consumed. Thus, their best survival strategy is to avoid their predators. In this study, we compared changes in clam behavior when exposed to blue crab and knobbed whelk predators. Clams reduced their feeding time when exposed to crabs and whelks, exudates from these predators, and to injured conspecifics. In a field experiment, we compared clam survival when caged predators where near clam beds vs. controls with empty cages. Clam survival was significantly higher when caged crabs or whelks were near, suggesting that clams detected these predators, reduced their feeding time, and were less apparent to ambient consumers. In lab behavioral assays, clams were less responsive to blue crabs in turbulent flows, and in the field, turbulence reduced the distance clams reacted to blue crabs. Previous studies have shown that blue crabs turbulence also diminishes blue crab foraging efficiency, and we conducted a field experiment to determine how turbulence affected clam-crab interactions. Our results suggest that predation intensity is greatest at intermediate turbulence levels, and lowest in flows with low and high turbulence levels. We attribute this pattern of predation intensity to differential effects of turbulence on the sensory abilities of crabs and clams. That is, in low turbulent flows, clams have a sensory advantage over crabs, and initiate avoidance behaviors before they are detected. However, as turbulence increases, clam perception diminishes faster than crabs, switching the sensory advantage to crabs, and making clams more vulnerable to consumers. In highly turbulent flows, crab perception declines at a rate faster than clams, and the sensory advantage returns to clams.

Freshwater crabs of Vietnam: diversity and conservation / Cua nước ngọt ở Việt Nam: đa dạng và bảo tồn

Do, Van Tu 09 December 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The freshwater crab fauna of Vietnam has a high diversity and endemism, 49 species have been recorded and 42 of them are only known from this country. In addition, many species are undescribed or undiscovered while at least 10% of known species are facing extinction. Water pollution, urban, industrial and agricultural development, habitat loss and fragmentation, deforestation and overexploitation are the main threats to this fauna. The first conservation recommendation is keeping rain forest tracts large enough to maintain habitat and water quality for long-term survival of these crabs. More research on taxonomy, distribution, population dynamics, main pressures, conservation status are needed in order to assess conservation status and create efficient conservation actions for freshwater crabs in Vietnam.

PROBING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS IN THE CRAB NEBULA WITH EMISSION LINE ANALYSIS

Wang, Xiang 01 January 2016 (has links)
We present a range of steady-state photoionization simulations, corresponding to different assumed shell geometries and compositions, of the unseen postulated rapidly expanding outer shell to the Crab Nebula. The properties of the shell are constrained by the mass that must lie within it, and by limits to the intensities of hydrogen recombination lines. In all cases the photoionization models predict very strong emission from high ionization lines that will not be emitted by the Crab’s filaments, alleviating problems with detecting these lines in the presence of light scattered from brighter parts of the Crab. The NIR [Ne VI] λ 7.652 mm line is a particularly good case; it should be dramatically brighter than the optical lines commonly used in searches. The C IV λ1549Å doublet is predicted to be the strongest absorption line from the shell, which is in agreement with HST observations. We show that the cooling timescale for the outer shell is much longer than the age of the Crab, due to the low density. This means that the temperature of the shell will actually “remember” its initial conditions. However, the recombination time is much shorter than the age of the Crab, so the predicted level of ionization should approximate the real ionization. In any case, it is clear that IR observations present the best opportunity to detect the outer shell and so guide future models that will constrain early events in the original explosion. Infrared observations have discovered a variety of objects, including filaments in the Crab Nebula and cool-core clusters of galaxies, where the H2 1-0 S(1) line is stronger than the infrared H I lines. A variety of processes could be responsible for this emission. Although many complete shock or PDR calculations of H2 emission have been published, we know of no previous simple calculation that shows the emission spectrum and level populations of thermally excited low-density H2. We present a range of purely thermal collisional simulations, corresponding to constant gas kinetic temperature at different densities. We consider the cases where the collisions affecting H2 are predominantly with atomic or molecular hydrogen. The resulting level population (often called “excitation”) diagrams show that excitation temperatures are sometimes lower than the gas kinetic temperature when the density is too low for the level populations to go to LTE. The atomic case goes to LTE at much lower densities than the molecular case due to larger collision rates. At low densities for the v=1 and 2 vibrational manifolds level populations are quasi-thermal, which could be misinterpreted as showing the gas is in LTE at high density. At low densities for the molecular case the level population diagrams are discontinuous between v=0 and 1 vibrational manifolds and between v=2, J=0, 1 and other higher J levels within the same vibrational manifold. These jumps could be used as density diagnostics. We show how much the H2 mass would be underestimated using the H2 1-0 S(1) line strength if the density is below that required for LTE. We give diagnostic diagrams showing level populations over a range of density and temperature. The density where the level populations are given by a Boltzmann distribution relative to the total molecular abundance (required to get the correct H2 mass), is shown for various cases. We discuss the implications of these results for the interpretation of H2 observations of the Crab Nebula and filaments in cool-core clusters of galaxies.

The Reproductive Ecology and Biology of the Pill-box Crab: Halicarcinus cookii (Brachyura: Hymenosomatidae) Filhol, 1885

van den Brink, Anneke Maria January 2006 (has links)
This study investigates the reproductive strategies of the pill-box crab, Halicarcinus cookii on the Kaikoura Peninsula, New Zealand. Various aspects essential to understanding reproductive strategies were examined including growth, population dynamics, reproductive biology and mating behaviour. H. cookii exhibits obvious sexual dimorphism such that females develop wide abdomens forming brood chambers, and males tend to grow larger than females and have larger chelipeds in relation to body size. H. cookii allocates energy into growth and reproduction in separate phases of its life cycle where growth ceases as reproductive maturity begins due to a terminal/pubertal moult. Despite the presence of ovigerous females throughout the 15 month sampling period, the population was highly seasonal, with peaks in recruitment and growth occurring primarily during the winter months and peaks in numbers of mature individuals during the summer months. Reproductive output increased with body size in H. cookii, as larger females produced more eggs and larger males transferred more sperm than their smaller counterparts. Ovaries matured prior to the terminal/pubertal moult (anecdysis) and, in multiparous females, in synchrony with brood development, allowing females to produce broods in quick succession, maximising their reproductive output in their short life span (approximately 12-18 months, 6 months as an adult). Incubation duration of broods decreased as seawater temperature increased, suggesting that temperature is the primary cause of the seasonal population cycling. Sperm storage allowed females to produce at least 4 fertilised broods without re-mating. Some sperm mixing in the spermathecae appeared to occur and the ventral-type structure implies last male sperm precedence. Males therefore preferentially mated with females closest to laying a new brood and guarded them longer than other females to ensure their paternity. Guarding duration varied according to the sex ratio allowing males to maximise their reproductive output.

Mating behaviour and the reproductive ecology of the big-handed crab, Heterozius rotundifrons A. Milne Edwards, 1867

Thompson, Glen Andrew January 1999 (has links)
The mating behaviour and reproductive ecology of the big-handed crab Heterozius rotundifrons was studied at Kaikoura between November 1997 and December 1998. H. rotundifrons was found at mean densities of 7.6 per m² (± 1.4) within the middle and low shore levels and varied little between seasons. The variance! mean ratio indicated that males and females aggregated within these shore levels. The sex ratio was significantly female biased during the majority of the year. Allometric growth rates indicated that males and females reached sexual maturity at 11 mm carapace width (CW). In males, spermatozoa production occurred between 9-9.99 mm CW. Ovigerous females were present every month except February. The first broods of the year were produced in March which coincides with a decrease in the female gonado-somatic index (GSI). These broods were incubated for approximately nine months whereas broods produced in August were incubated for only five months. Female brood production appeared to be cyclical, alternating between a winter incubation period and a summer incubation period. The completed cycle takes approximately three years with two broods produced during the cycle. Fecundity increased with female size but egg mortality was quite high (19%). Instantaneous mortality rate increased with increasing brood development. Females mate when recently moulted (soft-shelled). Although females moulted through out the year, in small numbers, there was a peak in female moulting during October and November. The operational sex ratio (OSR) was male biased during all months of the year. Females released an attractant prior to moulting which initiated pre-copulatory mate guarding by the male. Once the female moulted, copulation occurred approximately 6 h later. Copulation lasted for approximately 3 h and was followed by a period of post-copulatory mate guarding. Males increased the duration of post-copulatory mate guarding if another male was present. Large males out competed small males for receptive females. Males used their large cheliped to subdue competitors and to provide protection for the soft female. Mate guarding was shown to reduce cannibalism from other females. Spermatozoa are packaged in spermatophores within the vas deferens of males but are quickly dehisced within the spermathecae (ventral-type) of newly mated females. Last male to copulate probably achieves the highest level of paternity. Postcopulatory mate guarding by the male was found and ejaculates were found in discrete packets within the spermatheca. Sperm competition appeared to be important because large males displaced small males during copulation, males left when a female was still receptive and the females could retain sperm between moults. It is concluded that H. rotundifrons probably has a polygynous mating system in which males compete for soft females (female centered competition)

Sub-Lethal Effects of Hypoxia/Hypercapnia on Callinectes Sapidus in the York River Estuary, Virginia

Hypes, Sandra R. 01 January 1999 (has links)
This research examined effects of hypoxic environments on blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus in an estuarine environment. Hypoxic conditions were treated as a multiple stressor involving low dissolved oxygen (D.O.), increased carbon dioxide (hypercapnia), and low pH concurrently. The objectives were to: 1) identify hypoxiahypercapnia by monitoring D.O. and pH as an indicator of hypercapnia in shallow regions of the York River, 2) measure blue crab abundance, and 3) describe blue crab responses to hypoxiahypercapnia via field work at Taskinas Creek and lab measurements of respiration. Ambient D.O. and pH were positively correlated in the Taskinas Creek and York River sites (r= .73). Crab abundance (CPUE) was not significantly different among D.O. and pH ranges. It was concluded that hemolymph blood lactate concentration was not considered a good in situ biomarker for exposure to hypoxickypercapnic conditions. Oxygen uptake was not significantly different between normoxic and hypoxic conditions but was significantly affected by pH.

Revisão taxonômica e relação filogenética dos caranguejos aranha Libinia Leach, 1815 (Majoidea: Epialtidae) com base em caracteres morfológicos e moleculares / \"Taxonomic review and phylogenetic relationship of spider crabs Libinia Leach, 1815 (Majoidea: Epialtidae) based on morphological and molecular characters\"

Gomes, Ana Francisca Tamburus 26 April 2019 (has links)
Gomes, A.F.T. The Majoidea superfamily contains the popularly known spider crabs, found in marine and coastal environments on rocky or reef intertidal areas. Its great diversity resulted on different proposals of classification, thus, combining more recent propositions, there the following families: Epialtidae, Inachidae, Inachoididae, Majidae, Mithracidae e Oregoniidae. Epialtidade consists of 87 genera among them Libinia with 10 valid species, three of them occur in the Eastern Pacific (Mexico and Peru) and seven in the Western Atlantic, from Canada to Argentina. According to distinct phylogenetic hypotheses, this genus can be related to more than one outgroup (Herbstia, Leucippa, Notolopas, Pisa, Rochinia, Taliepus) each belonging to different subfamilies, suggesting that the family is paraphyletic, but without solving the intern relationships. In Brazil, although the taxonomic position of L. ferreirae and L spinosa are not doubtful, they are found in sympatry besides having some similar habits. However, there were no studies that clarified their relationship. Libinia dubia, L. emarginata and L. erinacea occur together in the Gulf of Mexico, or similar habitat and depth; they show subtle morphological differences that justified a comparative study. Libinia cavirostris was described in 1942, its morphological characters differed it from the other species of the genus; however, there were no more recent records, and as a consequence no further information. Libinia rhomboidea has a restricted distribution, few recent records and its type-locality is doubtful, which instigated the detailed examination of other specimens and ocalities. Three species occur in the Eastern Pacific, L. mexicana, L. setosa and L. peruana, the former with distribution in Mexico and the latter only in Peru; they are distinguishable from each other, but L. peruana was not sample since its description in 1983. The main goal of this study was investigating the phylogenetic relationship among the 10 species of Libinia and evaluated the hypothesis of monophyly; compared their morphology and performed the taxonomic revision of the genus, proposing informative morphological characters for adults and juveniles. Phylogenetic trees were obtained from DNA sequences of 16S and COI genes separated and concatenated through the maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference approaches. All species were considered valid. The phylogenetic hypotheses supported the monophyly of Libinia and indicated low proximity with Stratiolibinia, confirming the description of the genus. In general, the morphology of the species that occur in the Eastern Pacific is similar and distinguish them from the ones in the Western Atlantic. Moreover, the phylogenetic hypothesis of the genus does not suggest monophyletic clades for these geographic groups and still suggests low proximity between L. mexicana and L. setosa. Libinia spinosa was positioned externally to the other species, L. mexicana was sister group of L. cavirostris, and L. ferreirae was close related to the species that occur in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Finally, the phylogenetic hypothesis of the Libinia genus suggested its monophyly, it did not indicate distinct clades of the Pacific and Atlantic species and clarified the internal relationship among the species of the genus

Transporte de cálcio em células isoladas de hepatopâncreas do caranguejo dulcícola Dilocarcinus pagei: efeito do ATP e Ca2+ / Calcium transport in hepatopancreatic cells of the freshwater crab Dilocarcinus pagei: effects of ATP and Ca2+

Baptista, Bruno Blotta 24 June 2009 (has links)
All eukaryotic cells display several mechanisms to control and operate calcium (Ca2+). Although there is no apparent importance for hemolymph osmo-ionic regulation, it plays an essential role on exoskeleton calcification (hardening). Crustaceans growth and physiology are linked to massive calcium transport during molting cycle. The aim of this work was to evaluate calcium transport mechanisms in hepatopancreatic cells of the freshwater crab D. pagei. When these cells were exposed to external ATP pulse (1mM), it was observed a decrease in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i), inhibited by 10mM vanadate and partially by 2mM amiloride, suggesting the involvement of a Ca-ATPase (PMCA) and Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX ou NHE), respectively. Recovery of [Ca2+]i was inhibited by 1mM verapamil, a calcium channel blocker. The same was observed in calcium free environment and so, calcium must have been provided by intracellular stocks (endoplasmatic reticulum and/or mitochondria). When cells incubated in calcium free environment were exposed to calcium pulse (1mM or 10mM), a rapid rise in [Ca2+]i was observed, suggesting calcium influx. This could be partially inhibited by 1mM verapamil or 2mM amiloride, suggesting the participation of calcium channels and Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (Ca2+ influx mode), respectively. Calcium transport in these cell appears to be the same as described for other crustaceans: efflux occurs via a vanadate sensitive Ca-ATPase (PMCA) and by an amiloride sensitive Na+/Ca2+ (NCX exchanger); influx is mediated by a verapamil sensitive calcium channel and by an amiloride sensitive Na+/Ca2+ or Na+/H+ (NHE) operating as Ca2+ /(n) Na+ exchanger. Taken together, these data contributes to a better understanding of D. pagei calcium homeostasis and the moult cycle.
