Model selection for discrete Markov random fields on graphs / Seleção de modelos para campos aleatórios Markovianos discretos sobre grafos

Iara Moreira Frondana 28 June 2016 (has links)
In this thesis we propose to use a penalized maximum conditional likelihood criterion to estimate the graph of a general discrete Markov random field. We prove the almost sure convergence of the estimator of the graph in the case of a finite or countable infinite set of variables. Our method requires minimal assumptions on the probability distribution and contrary to other approaches in the literature, the usual positivity condition is not needed. We present several examples with a finite set of vertices and study the performance of the estimator on simulated data from theses examples. We also introduce an empirical procedure based on k-fold cross validation to select the best value of the constant in the estimators definition and show the application of this method in two real datasets.

Modélisation de la fragilisation due au gonflement dans les aciers inoxydables austénitiques irradiés / Modeling of cavity swelling-induced embrittlement in irradiated austenitic stainless steels

Han, Xu 14 December 2012 (has links)
During long-time neutron irradiation occurred in Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs), significant changes of the mechanical behavior of materials used in reactor core internals (made of 300 series austenitic stainless steels) are observed, including irradiation-induced hardening and softening, loss of ductility and toughness. So far, much effect has been made to identify radiation effects on material microstructure evolution (dislocations, Frank loops, cavities, segregation, etc.). The irradiation-induced cavity swelling, considered as a potential factor limiting the reactor lifetime, could change the mechanical properties of materials (plasticity, toughness, etc.), even lead to a structure distortion because of the dimensional modifications between different components. The principal aim of the present PhD work is to study qualitatively the influence of cavity swelling on the mechanical behaviors of irradiated materials. A micromechanical constitutive model based on dislocation and irradiation defect (Frank loops) density evolution has been developed and implemented into ZéBuLoN and Cast3M finite element codes to adapt the large deformation framework. 3D FE analysis is performed to compute the mechanical properties of a polycrystalline aggregate. Furthermore, homogenization technique is applied to develop a Gurson-type model. Unit cell simulations are used to study the mechanical behavior of porous single crystals, by accounting for various effects of stress triaxiality, of void volume fraction and of crystallographic orientation, in order to study void effect on the irradiated material plasticity and roughness at polycrystalline scale.

Modélisation de l'amorçage de la corrosion sous contrainte dans les alliages base nickel 182 et 82 en milieu primaire des réacteurs à eau sous pression / Modelling initiation of stress corrosion cracking in nickel base alloys 182 and 82 in primary water of pressurized water reactors

Wehbi, Mickaël 14 November 2014 (has links)
Nickel base welds are widely used to assemble components of the primary circuit of Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) plants. International experience shows an increasing number of Stress Corrosion Cracks (SCC) in nickel base welds 182 and 82 which motivates the development of models predicting the time to SCC initiation for these materials. SCC involves several parameters such as materials, mechanics or environment interacting together. The goal of this study is to have a better understanding of the physical mechanisms occurring at grains boundaries involved in SCC. In-situ tensile test carried out on oxidized alloy 182 evidenced dispersion in the susceptibility to corrosion of grain boundaries. Moreover, the correlation between oxidation and cracking coupled with micro-mechanical simulations on synthetic polycrystalline aggregate, allowed to propose a cracking criterion of oxidized grain boundaries which is defined by both critical oxidation depth and local stress level. Due to the key role of intergranular oxidation in SCC and since significant dispersion is observed between grain boundaries, oxidation tests were performed on alloys 182 and 82 in order to model the intergranular oxidation kinetics as a function of chromium carbides precipitation, temperature and dissolved hydrogen content. The model allows statistical analyses and is embedded in a local initiation model. In this model, SCC initiation is defined by the cracking of the intergranular oxide and is followed by slow and fast crack growth until the crack depth reaches a given value. Simplifying assumptions were necessary to identify laws used in the SCC model. However, these laws will be useful to determine experimental conditions of future investigations carried out to improve the calibration used parameters.

Development of a Failure Criterion for Rock Masses Having Non-Orthogonal Fracture Systems

Mehrapour, Mohammad Hadi, Mehrapour, Mohammad Hadi January 2017 (has links)
Two new three-dimensional rock mass strength criteria are developed in this dissertation by extending an existing rock mass strength criterion. These criteria incorporate the effects of the intermediate principal stress, minimum principal stress and the anisotropy resulting from these stresses acting on the fracture system. In addition, these criteria have the capability of capturing the anisotropic and scale dependent behavior of the jointed rock mass strength by incorporating the effect of fracture geometry through the fracture tensor components. Another significant feature of the new rock mass strength criterion which has the exponential functions (equation 6.7) is having only four empirical coefficients compared to the existing strength criterion which has five empirical coefficients; if the joint sets have the same isotropic mechanical behavior, the number of the empirical coefficients reduces to two in this new strength criterion (equation 6.10). The new criteria were proposed after analyzing 452 numerical modeling results of the triaxial, polyaxial and biaxial compression tests conducted on the jointed rock blocks having one or two joint sets by the PFC3D software version 5. In this research to have several samples with the same properties a synthetic rock material that is made out of a mixture of gypsum, sand and water was used. In total, 20 joint systems were chosen and joint sets have different dip angles varying from 15 to 60 at an interval of 15 with dip directions of 30 and 75 for the two joint sets. Each joint set also has 3 persistent joints with the joint spacing of 42 mm in a cubic sample of size 160 mm and the joints have the same isotropic mechanical behavior. The confining stress combination values were chosen based on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) value of the modeled intact synthetic rock. The minimum principal stress values were chosen as 0, 20, 40 and 60 percent of the UCS. For each minimum principal stress value, the intermediate principal stress value varies starting at the minimum principal stress value and increasing at an interval of 20 percent of the UCS until it is lower than the strength of the sample under the biaxial loading condition with the same minimum principal stress value. The new rock mass failure criteria were developed from the PFC3D modeling data. However, since the joint sets having the dip angle of 60 intersect the top and bottom boundaries of the sample simultaneously, the joint systems with at least one of the joint sets having the dip angle of 60 were removed from the database. Thus, 284 data points from 12 joint systems were used to find the best values of the empirical coefficients for the new rock mass strength criteria. λ, p and q were found to be 0.675, 3.16 and 0.6, respectively, through a conducted grid analysis with a high R2 (coefficient of determination) value of 0.94 for the new criterion given by equation 6.9 and a and b were found to be 0.404 and 0.972, respectively, through a conducted grid analysis with a high R2 value of 0.92 for the new criterion given by equation 6.10. The research results clearly illustrate how increase of the minimum and intermediate principal stresses and decrease of the joint dip angle, increase the jointed rock block strength. This dissertation also illustrates how different confining stress combinations and joint set dip angles result in different jointed rock mass failure modes such as sliding on the joints, failure through the intact rock and a combination of the intact rock and joint failures. To express the new rock mass strength failure criteria, it was necessary to determine the intact rock strengths under the same confining stress combinations mentioned earlier. Therefore, the intact rock was also modeled for all three compression tests and the intact rock strengths were found for 33 different confining stress combinations. Suitability of six major intact rock failure criteria: Mohr-Coulomb, Hoek-Brown, Modified Lade, Modified Wiebols and Cook, Mogi and Drucker-Prager in representing the intact rock strength was examined through fitting them using the aforementioned 33 PFC3D data points. Among these criteria, Modified Lade, Modified Mogi with power function and Modified Wiebols and Cook were found to be the best failure criteria producing lower Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values of 0.272, 0.301 and 0.307, respectively. Thus, these three failure criteria are recommended for the prediction of the intact rock strength under the polyaxial stress condition. In PFC unlike the other methods, macro mechanical parameters are not directly used in the model and micro mechanical parameter values applicable between the particles should be calibrated using the macro mechanical properties. Accurate calibration is a difficult or challenging task. This dissertation emphasized the importance of studying the effects of all micro parameter values on the macro mechanical properties before one goes through calibration of the micro parameters in PFC modeling. Important effects of two micro parameters, which have received very little attention, the particle size distribution and the cov of the normal and shear strengths, on the macro properties are clearly illustrated before conducting the said calibration. The intact rock macro mechanical parameter values for the Young’s modulus, uniaxial compression strength (UCS), internal friction angle, cohesion and Poisson's ratio were found by performing 3 uniaxial tests, 3 triaxial tests and 5 Brazilian tests on a synthetic material made out of a mixture of gypsum, sand and water and the joint macro mechanical parameter values were found by conducting 4 uniaxial compression tests and 4 direct shear tests on jointed synthetic rocks with a horizontal joint. Then the micro mechanical properties of the Linear Parallel Bond Model (LPMB) and Modified Smooth Joint Contact Model (MSJCM) were calibrated to represent the intact rock and joints respectively, through the specific procedures explained in this research. The similar results obtained between the 2 polyaxial experiments tests of the intact rock and 11 polyaxial experimental tests of the jointed rock blocks having one joint set and the numerical modeling verified the calibrated micro mechanical properties and further modification of these properties was not necessary. This dissertation also proposes a modification to the Smooth Joint Contact Model (SJCM) to overcome the shortcoming of the SJCM to capture the non-linear behavior of the joint closure varying with the joint normal stress. Modified Smooth Joint Contact Model (MSJCM) uses a linear relation between the joint normal stiffness and the normal contact stress to model the non-linear relation between the joint normal deformation and the joint normal stress observed in the compression joint normal stiffness test. A good agreement obtained between the results from the experimental tests and the numerical modeling of the compression joint normal test shows the accuracy of this new model. Moreover, another shortcoming associated with the SJCM application known as the interlocking problem was solved through this research by proposing a new joint contact implementation algorithm called joint sides checking (JSC) approach. The interlocking problem occurs due to a shortcoming of the updating procedure in the PFC software related to the contact conditions of the particles that lie around the intended joint plane during high shear displacements. This problem increases the joint strength and dilation angle and creates unwanted fractures around the intended joint plane.

The Atlantic Forest is one of the most important biomes of the world and is considered one of the 25 hotspots of biodiversity. Among the ecosystems associated with the Atlantic Forest, one of the more endangered is the Restinga Forest with only 0,5% of its original area preserved. Restinga is the seasonally flooded coastal forest that occurs in sandy ridges along the coast where the soil is extremely poor in nutrients, very acid and subject to seasonal flooding. Among the communities that occur in Restinga forest, we highlight the vascular epiphytes that by not depending on soil nutrients, may play an important role in nutrient dynamics in these systems. To evaluate the role of vascular epiphytes in Restinga Forests, this study proceeded a quantitative survey of the biomass of vascular epiphytes in an area of one hectare of Restinga forest, in Picinguaba at the Serra do Mar State Park (PESM), Ubatuba, north coast of São Paulo State. On 23 phorophytes with diameter at breast height (DBH) ? 4.8 cm, previously selected, was all the epiphytic material collected, divided by ecological zones (canopy, branches and trunk). The trees were sample trees with different (a) canopy architecture (A, to palm trees; B, to small crown; and C, for large crown) and (b) coverage ratio by epiphytes (ICE), which classifies individual trees according to the size and biomass of epiphytes. This material was separate and determined the dry weight per epiphytes groups: Arácea (Araceae, Gesneriaceae and Piperaceae), Bromeliacea, Orchidaceae and Miscellany (Cactaceae, Pteridophytes, roots, organic matter). The ecological zone with the highest biomass epiphytic was the trunk, with 54% of the total, followed by branches with 45%. An allometric model for the estimation of epiphytes biomass as a function of the host tree DBH, ICE and dry weight of epiphytes was develop based in the information collected. From this model, biomass of vascular epiphytes was estimate in 2,32 Mg ha-1 for 1ha of Restinga forest. The epiphytic biomass per host tree varied from 0.01 kg to 28.9 kg. The total epiphytic biomass represent only 1.34% of all living biomass above ground (AGB), but its contribution is 18% of the photosynthetic biomass of the forest and more than 10 Mg ha-1 of wet biomass, showing the importance of this component to the functioning of the ecosystem. The estimate of biomass through allometric model developed in this study, using as predictors the epiphyte coverage index and the DAP of the host tree, represents an important advance in studies involving the quantification of biomass of vascular epiphytes, being easy to use and applicable in different vegetation types, allowing comparison between different studies / Mestrado / Ecologia / Mestra em Ecologia

Influence of Item Response Theory and Type of Judge on a Standard Set Using the Iterative Angoff Standard Setting Method

Hamberlin, Melanie Kidd 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of item response theory and different types of judges on a standard. The iterative Angoff standard setting method was employed by all judges to determine a cut-off score for a public school district-wide criterion-reformed test. The analysis of variance of the effect of judge type and standard setting method on the central tendency of the standard revealed the existence of an ordinal interaction between judge type and method. Without any knowledge of p-values, one judge group set an unrealistic standard. A significant disordinal interaction was found concerning the effect of judge type and standard setting method on the variance of the standard. A positive covariance was detected between judges' minimum pass level estimates and empirical item information. With both p-values and b-values, judge groups had mean minimum pass levels that were positively correlated (ranging from .77 to .86), regardless of the type of information given to the judges. No differences in correlations were detected between different judge types or different methods. The generalizability coefficients and phi indices for 12 judges included in any method or judge type were acceptable (ranging from .77 to .99). The generalizability coefficient and phi index for all 24 judges were quite high (.99 and .96, respectively).

Jelínek, Aleš January 2017 (has links)

Výpočtová analýza vlivu výrobních defektů na porušení keramické pěny při mechanickém zatížení / Computational analysis of the influence of initial defects on the ceramic foam failure upon mechanical loading

Papšík, Roman January 2019 (has links)
The thesis deals with computational modelling of ceramic foams and analysis of influence of structural manufacturing defects (like broken struts, closed pores and material clumps) have on foam strength. Model of foam geometry was discretized using beam elements in order to decrease computational cost. In place where several struct join, rigid beam element was used so that the increased stiffness is better modelled. Closed walls of pores were modelled and discretised by shell elements. Influence of loading direction was analysed on foams containing no defects and then influence of amount of defects in foam on strength was further analysed. Highest strength show foams created by cells whose structs are oriented in direction of loading. These were losing strength most rapidly. Foam with structure of rhombic dodecahedral cell was least influenced by presence of closed pore defects but it also showed lowest strength even without defects. Cells with struts oriented in direction of loading experienced biggest drop in strength. Kelvin cell is a compromise. It was shown that difference in strength of strut with constant and varying cross-section is tenths of percent.
