A Translocated Population of the St. Croix Ground Lizard: Analyzing Its Detection Probability and Investigating its Impacts on the Local Prey Base

Treglia, Michael Louis 2010 August 1900 (has links)
The St. Croix ground lizard, Ameiva polops, is a United States endangered species endemic to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. It was extirpated from St. Croix Proper by invasive mongooses, and remaining populations are on small, nearby cays. In the summer of 2008, as part of the recovery plan for this species, I worked in a multi-agency effort to translocate a population of A. polops to Buck Island Reef National Monument, U.S. Virgin Islands to focus on two main objectives: 1) examine the detection probability of A. polops and infer the consequences of it on population estimates; and 2) examine whether A. polops may deplete its prey base or alter the arthropod assemblage at the translocation site. We used a soft-release strategy for the translocation, in which 57 lizards were initially contained in a series of eight 10 m x 10 m enclosures in the habitat on Buck Island for monitoring. As part of the initial monitoring I conducted visual surveys through all enclosures, with the known number of lizards, to calculate the detection probability and to demonstrate how many individuals would be estimated using visual encounter surveys of this known population. Adjacent to enclosures housing A. polops were control enclosures, without A. polops, which I used to test whether the translocated lizards would impact their prey base over 6 weeks. I found that the detection probability of A. polops is very low (<0.25), which causes population sizes to be severely underestimated, even using some mark-resight techniques. My study of A. polops on the prey community indicated that the lizards generally had no effect on abundance or diversity of arthropods in general, though they may cause small changes for particular taxa. My results help corroborate other evidence that accuracy of population enumeration techniques needs to be improved in order to adequately understand the status of wildlife populations. Additionally, prey resources do not seem to be limiting A. polops in the short-term, and I expect the population will grow, expanding through Buck Island. Future monitoring will be carried out by the National Park Service using robust mark-resight techniques.

L'engagement des femmes dans les sociétés françaises de la Croix-Rouge 1864-1940 / Commitment of women in french companies of the red cross. 1864-1940

Roudière, Patrick 01 December 2017 (has links)
At the end of the nineteenth century, three French companies of the Red Cross appear. These humanitarian organizations are auxiliaries of the Health Service of the Armed. Men and women volunteers care for the wounded French soldiers. Volunteers are women nurses, auto conductive, etc. Gradually they become necessary and essential in the overall functioning of the Red Cross. In the eyes of senior military officers, doctors and men of the Red Cross, they make themselves indispensable by their zeals, their devotion, their sacrifices particularly during the war between France and Napoleon III of Prussia (1870-1871), for the first time really in the Great War (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). In peacetime, women are versatile. They raise funds, weave networks with local populations, economic and political circles. They recruit new volunteers for the next train as a nurse. These women belong to the upper classes of the nobility and bourgeoisie. They replace their male counterparts when they are understaffed in certain functions and over time. They allow the Red Cross to continue to assurer their missions for the wounded fighters, victims of natural disasters and epidemics. Women involved in the Red Cross have an extraordinary destiny.

Veer, Jean-Daniel 28 May 2019 (has links)
This thesis explores Douglas John Hall’s theology of the cross from an ecclesiological perspective. It aims to answer the following question: What ecclesiology does Hall’s theology of the cross suggest? To answer the question, we first survey Hall’s major influences to provide a deeper understanding of his theological concerns. We then identify the cross and context as fundamental methodological underpinnings of his theology of the cross and its ecclesiology. In the same vein, we present the doctrines of God, creation and Christ as theological foundations. Approached from the perspective of a God who suffers, a relational ontology, and a Christ who represents, this thesis highlights a Church that represents, relationally engages itself within its context, and suffers. This Church is called to represent the world to Christ and Christ to the world. It is called to engage in its context rather than attempt to escape its reality. Lastly, it is called to suffer because of its identity and its engagement in its context. This thesis proposes a perspective on the elements of a doctrine of the Church found in the work of Hall.

L'humanitaire en guerre civile : une histoire des opérations de secours au Nigeria-Biafra (1967-1970) / Humanitarianism in civil war : a history of the relief operations in the Nigeria-Biafra conflict (1967-1970)

Desgrandchamps, Marie-Luce 18 December 2014 (has links)
In the summer of 1968, pictures of emaciated children, suffering from diseases due to malnutrition, poured in western medias. They came from the eastern region of the Federation of Nigeria, which had proclaimed its independence one year before and taken the name of the Republic of Biafra. War and famine that were taking place in the region generated widespread concern in the West, where humanitarian organizations decided to set up international relief operations to help alleviate the suffering of the civilian population. Still understudied by the historiography, the crisis in Biafra and the mobilization of western organizations are the subjects of this PhD. Firstly, the dissertation examines how an African civil war became an international humanitarian crisis. To this purpose, it analyses the situation in the ground, the actors of its internationalization and how it was represented. Secondly, in order to grasp the complexity of humanitarian aid, the dissertation studies the elaboration and the deployment of the relied operations, as well as their reception in Nigeria in a post-colonial context. Finally, the thesis questions why Biafra is usually considered as a turning point in the history of humanitarianism. By so doing, it sheds light on the reconfigurations of the discourses and practices of humanitarian aid that took place in the late 1960’s.

The Study of three themes in Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur L¡¦Enfant-Jesus.

Kuo, Ru-yun 06 September 2010 (has links)
Messiaen studied many special compositional traits in his life. Modes of limited transpositions, rhythm, and birdsong are the most special and important. Catholicism is the first thought of Messiaen¡¦s works. The inspiration of Messiaen¡¦s creation, the structure of works, and the picture of music are all closed related to Catholicism. Vingt Regards sur L¡¦Enfant-Jesus is the only one piano solo work of Messiaen¡¦s religious works. This thesis mainly discuss the three principle themes¡XTheme de Dieu, Theme de L¡¦Etoile et de la Croix, and Theme D¡¦Accords¡X to realize the specific application that Messiaen use modes of limited transpositions, rhythm, birdsong, and Catholicism religious concept in his works. This thesis divided into two chapters. The first chapter presents briefly the life and the compositional traits of Messiaen. In second chapter, it discusses the development of the three themes, including modes, rhythm, shape of phrase, dynamic, and speed.

Boileau, Patricia. January 1999 (has links)
This study traces in Mallet-Stevens' architecture a temporality proper to the photographic image, latent in the space of the moderns of the 1920--1930. To this end, I present both an analyses of Mallet-Stevens' work and a photomontage on the Noailles and Cavrois villas, which combines my photos with historical documents. The montage reveals in these spaces a perceptual quality of the image germane to Merleau-Ponty's notion of flesh. The analysis develops this notion along the lines of 'the grain and the skin'. It reveals in Mallet-Stevens' work the capital importance of his experience, as movie set designer. Indeed, space is conceived by Mallet-Stevens in relationship to a camera frame: therefore the primary medium is the surface (the grain), where the emotional effect of temporality takes place (the skin).
