Guias de execução e memorização : estudo de caso com violinistas pós-graduados

O presente trabalho investiga processos de aprendizagem e memorização simultâneos ao avaliar a eficácia dos Guias de Execução (GEs) segundo o protocolo Chaffin. O protocolo foi utilizado como estratégia de prática deliberada para o aprendizado e memorização simultâneos. Objetiva-se observar o efeito dos GEs para o controle dos sintomas de ansiedade durante a performance, bem como para a recuperação de episódios de falhas de memória do intérprete. O estudo envolve quatro violinistas pós-graduados e apresenta a proposta de aprender e memorizar simultaneamente um repertório não estudado previamente de maneira sistemática. O repertório pôde ser escolhido livremente pelos participantes dentre a obra Sonatas e Partitas de Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 1001-1006). / This work investigates simultaneous learning and memorization processes by evaluating the effectiveness of Performance Cues (PCs) according to Chaffin’s protocol. The protocol was used as a deliberate practice strategy for learning and memorizing simultaneously. The purpose of this investigation is to observe the effect of PCs on controling symptoms of anxiety during the performance, as well as how it helps recovery from memory failure episodes by the performer. The study involves four postgraduates violinists and presents the proposal of learning and memorizing a repertoire that was not previously studied in a systematic way. The repertoire could be chosen freely by the participants from the work Sonatas and Partitas by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 1001-1006).

Todo ser humano apresenta oscilações posturais aleatórias durante a postura ereta quieta advindas de mecanismos centrais e periféricos. Um toque suave (LT do inglês light touch) de um dos dedos sobre uma superfície fixa ao solo resulta em uma pista sensorial adicional, que promove uma diminuição das oscilações posturais. Entretanto, há necessidade de se obter maiores conhecimentos sobre mecanismos associados ao LT, tanto no que tange a aspectos sensoriais quanto motores associados ao fenômeno. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avançar no entendimento sobre a influência do LT sobre o comportamento de múltiplas variáveis extraídas durante a postura ereta quieta. O primeiro capítulo investigou quantificadores de oscilações posturais com base em medidas como o centro de pressão (CP), centro de massa (CM) e ângulos segmentares e corporais durante experimentos com condições em superfície estável e instável, com olhos abertos e olhos fechados, comparando as condições com e sem LT. Adicionalmente, foi analisada a coerência espectral entre sinais de eletromiograma de diferentes músculos do corpo e os quantificadores acima elencados nas diferentes condições. Os resultados mostraram que o LT diminui o nível de ativação de alguns músculos, principalmente o músculo gastrocnêmico medial, importante na manutenção do controle postural. A variabilidade dos ângulos segmentares e corporais, conjuntamente com variáveis extraídas do CP e do CM diminuíram em condições com LT. Na análise de coerência o LT promoveu algumas alterações nos padrões de oscilação entre ângulos, CP, CM e sinais de eletromiograma, porém com poucas modificações na fase entre os sinais. Na análise de coerência intermuscular, comparando pares de músculos do lado direito e esquerdo do corpo, observou-se que para os membros inferiores a coerência ocorre geralmente na faixa de 0 a 1-2 Hz (em fase), podendo aumentar a faixa de frequência em situações mais instáveis (sem visão e superfície instável), em que o LT passa a influenciar de maneira mais significativa a coerência entre os sinais. O segundo capítulo deste estudo foi motivado por estudos que mostraram ser possível manipular as entradas sensoriais geradas pelo dedo durante o LT. O presente estudo investigou se a retirada de uma entrada sensorial proprioceptiva associada ao dedo é capaz de alterar a oscilação postural, possibilitando a separação e quantificação da contribuição sensorial cutânea da contribuição proprioceptiva dos músculos do terceiro dedo. O controle postural foi avaliado com os sujeitos de olhos fechados e sobre uma superfície instável. Os resultados indicaram que a retirada da informação sensorial proprioceptiva do dedo diminuiu a variabilidade e a velocidade do CP, indicando que a informação cutânea sem a adição de interferências proprioceptivas pode diminuir as oscilações posturais / Human subjects during upright stance show random postural oscillations which are controlled by the central nervous system. A light touch of an index finger (LT) on a surface fixed to the ground results in an additional sensory cue, which promotes a decrease in postural oscillations. However, there is a need to improve the knowledge about mechanisms associated with LT, both with respect to sensory and motor aspects associated with the phenomenon. This study aimed to further the understanding of the influence of LT on the behavior of multiple variables measured during upright stance. The first chapter analyzed variations of some quantifiers of postural sway based on the center of pressure (CP), center of mass (CM) and joint and body angles during experiments with different surface and vision conditions, with and without LT. In addition, the spectral coherence was analyzed between electromyogram signals from different muscles of the body and the previously listed sway quantifiers. The results showed that LT decreases the level of activation of some muscles, particularly the medial gastrocnemius, an important muscle for the maintenance of posture. Segmental and body angle variability and variables extracted from the CP and CM decreased in conditions with LT. In coherence analysis LT promoted some changes in patterns of oscillation between angles, CP, CM and EMGs, but with few modifications in the phase between the signals. The intermuscular coherence analysis (comparing the right and left muscles pairs of the body) showed that significant changes usually occured in the range of 0 to 1-2 Hz (in phase) for the lower limbs and may increase the frequency range in unstable situations (without vision and unstable surface). In these cases LT starts to affect more significantly the coherence between signals. The second chapter of this study was motivated by results from studies that have shown that it is possible to manipulate the sensory inputs generated by the finger during LT. This study investigated whether the withdrawal of a finger proprioceptive input affects postural sway, allowing an analysis of the effects of cutaneous sensory inputs of the third finger muscles. Postural control was evaluated with the subjects with the eyes closed and on an unstable surface. The results showed that removal of proprioceptive information from the finger flexor muscles decreased the variability and speed of the CP, indicating that cutaneous inputs without proprioceptive information may decrease postural sway

Backward Transfer of Apology Strategies from Japanese to English: Do English L1 Speakers Use Japanese-Style Apologies When Speaking English?

When learning a second language, there are elements of a learner's native language that can transfer and are exhibited during production in the second language. This can extend not only to the way things are said but even to gestures that are language- and speech-act-specific. However, there is evidence that the same can occur backwards, that is to say that elements of a second language can be exhibited during production of one's native language (Pavlenko and Jarvis, 2002). This study focuses on English L1 learners of Japanese who have spent significant time both in country and learning the language to see if they exhibit Japanese tendencies when performing apologies in their native English. Comparisons between those with no Japanese experience were made with those who had extensive Japanese experience. Through video recordings of 45 participants engaging in six apology-induced scenarios (non-Japanese, n=24; Japanese, n=21), the participants showed that backward transfer occurs with repetition of IFIDs and nonverbal cues. Further research through different methods can be more telling.

Examining the Role of Source Credibility in the Vaccination Debate : An Experimental Study of the Influence of Heuristic Cues on Source Credibility Assessments and Attitude Change

The global rise of anti-vaccination movements has led to serious consequences for the public health such as the recent measles outbreak in the United States. The increased promotion of misleading information on vaccinations by social media influencers as well as by media outlets seems to have resulted into a more negative view on vaccinations. The popularity of these social media influencers and the good reputation and authority of the media outlets could have played a substantial role in these developments. The following experimental study will try to explore whether popularity or authority cues can have an impact on the evaluation of the credibility of these two types of sources via an online survey. Furthermore, it aims to examine whether said heuristic cues and resulting conformity effects or the source credibility in general could have an impact on the opinion of recipients on a potential autism-vaccination link. Results have shown that especially authority cues seem to have a positive impact on source credibility evaluations. Furthermore, a high general trust in the media positively influences assessments of source credibility of well-established news outlets. Popularity cues as well as authority cues seem to have a positive effect on the recipients´ opinion. However, authority cues and the resulting effects of informational conformity seem to lead to greater attitude changes. Particularly people with a high need for conformity exhibit considerable attitude changes when exposed to the well-established news outlet as a source. Also, a high perceived source credibility is positively correlated with a desired attitude change. Especially the high perceived credibility of the social media influencer resulted in significant attitude changes. The results underline the importance and positive impact that a perceived authority can have on source credibility assessments and on recipients’ opinions. This highlights the great necessity for self-proclaimed experts on social media platforms and particularly for well-established news outlets to increase their effort to thoroughly and accurately research health-related topics.

Variation in the Order of Presentation of Cues as One Variable in Concept Organization

In the experiment, with forty-eight students as subjects, a serie s of nonsense syllables (DAX, MEF, TOV, VIC, YOP, ZIP, and ZIL) were to be associated with four geometric figures. The task was so arranged that Zip applied to all figures, Dax and Vic to subsets of two figures each, and the remaining were individual labels. In each of three experiments there was an experimental group that received pre-response cueing by means of an analogy which involved hierarchic concepts in the same general form, i. e ., animal, wild, tame, and individual names. The results suggest that the order and timing of the presentation of the cues were varied in the three separate experiments. Groups that received prior analogy versus groups not given the analogy were more successful in ordering the random stimuli. Further, the order of presentation of the cues had no significant effect on the ability of the subjects to order the random stimuli.

The Impact Of Situational Context On Children's Social Information Processing: The Proximal Influence Of Friends

There is increasing recognition that contextual aspects of social situations are important determinants of children's social information processing. While it is generally accepted that friends influence children's social behavior, the immediate influence of a friend in specific conflict situations is less understood. Contextualized vignettes depicting hypothetical peer conflict situations were developed to examine the impact of situational context, namely a friend's suggested attribution and an antagonist action cue, on students' social information processing. A repeated measures design examined the proximal influence of situational context on 4th and 5th grade students' (N=367) own intent attributions, emotional reactions, and response evaluations to hypothetical peer conflict scenarios. Results indicated that situational context is important to students' social cognition. Students adjusted their social cognition and emotion in response to cues to an antagonist's intent and were influenced by a friend's comments during peer conflict scenarios. Students' responses were more aligned with the antagonist's action than a friend's suggested attribution. However, a friends' attribution was influential in situations where it conflicted with the antagonist's action. Results of this study help to increase knowledge regarding the context of social cognition and can assist in the development of more ecologically valid social skill interventions.

Sensitivity to correlation in probabilistic environments

Natural categories seem to be comprised of clustered stimuli that contain a myriad of correlated features; birds, for example, tend to fly, have wings, lay eggs, and make nests. Nonetheless, the evidence that people use these correlations during intentional category learning is overwhelmingly negative (Murphy, 2002). People do, however, show evidence of correlational sensitivity during other types of category learning tasks (e.g., feature prediction). The usual explanation is that intentional category learning tasks promote rule use, which discards the correlated feature information; whereas, other types of category learning tasks promote exemplar storage, which preserves correlated feature information. However, all of the intentional category learning tasks employed to examine correlational sensitivity to date have only used deterministic mappings of stimuli to categories (i.e., each stimulus belongs to only one category). The current thesis is concerned primarily with the effects introducing the probabilistic assignment of stimuli to categories on the acquisition of different types of correlational knowledge. If correlational knowledge depends on whether or not people selectively attend to the correlation then probabilistic reinforcement, which is predicted to increase attention shifting (Kruschke & Johansen, 1999), should lead to increased correlational sensitivity. The first paper of this thesis confirms that selective attention provides a way to explain the presence or absence of correlational knowledge in different tasks. However, selective attention models have been unable to account for tasks in which people use the correlation between a non-relevant cue and regions of the category space to switch between the application of multiple rules. This phenomenon, known as knowledge partitioning, is explored in the second paper of this thesis. This thesis also extends the empirical implications of the first two papers to existing research (see included paper 3) and also provides recommendations of how utilize this conceptualization of knowledge for practitioners in the applied setting (see included paper 4). Finally, in addition to increasing attention shifting, probabilistic feedback is also assumed to result in an attenuation of learning over time (Kruschke & Johansen, 1999); the fifth paper in this thesis provides empirical confirmation that people attenuate learning in response to unavoidable error.

The acquisition of contrast : a longitudinal investigation of initial s+plosive cluster development in Swedish children

<p>This Thesis explores the development of word-initial s+plosive consonant clusters in the speech of Swedish children between the ages of 1;6 and 4;6. Development in the word-initial consonant clusters is viewed as being determined by 1) the children’s ability to articulate the target sequence of consonants, 2) the level of understanding of which acoustic features in the adult model production are significant for the signalling of the intended distinction, and 3) the children’s ability to apply established production patterns only to productions where the acquired feature agrees with the adult target, to achieve a contrast between rival output forms. This Thesis employs a method where output forms are contrasted with attempted productions of potential homonym target words. Thus, development is quantified as an increase in the manifestations of phonetic features where it agrees with the adult norm, coupled by a decrease in the same feature in output forms where it is inappropriate according to the specifications of the phonological system of the ambient language. Acoustic investigations of cues of voicing, aspiration, place of articulation and syllable onset complexity, and auditory investigations of place, manner and syllable onset complexity were conducted. The Thesis has four outcomes. One, a description of the perceptual quality of the productions in terms of place, manner, voicing and syllable onset complexity is presented. Two, a developmental sequence of stable acquisition of these features is proposed; manner is shown to be acquired first, followed by syllable onset complexity and place of articulation. Evidence is provided that the voiced/aspirated distinction is still being acquired at the end of the investigated age period. Three, the developmental use of acoustic cues of place and voicing are described. Voice Onset Time and Spectral Skewness are shown to be used by children in order to increase the likeness to the adult target in terms of voicing and place of articulation. Aspiration Amplitude is shown to be used as an auxiliary cue to Voice Onset Time. The place cues Spectral Tilt Change, F2, Spectral Mean and Spectral Variance were shown to be used in order to refine already produced consonants rather than approach the adult target model. Four, the Thesis provides evidence of periods of confusions in the output of children. Analysis Of Environmental Cues Causing The Seasonal Change In Pgm (phosphoglucomutase) Allozyme Frequencies In Honeybees (apis Mellifera L.)

In an earlier project completed in our laboratory a seasonal fluctuation in Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) phenotype frequencies was found, so that the winter bees were almost all heterozygotes and long lived than the summer bees among which homozygotes were significantly at high frequencies at Pgm locus. Same results were obtained in populations of three subspecies, A. m. meda, A. m. caucasica, and A. m. carnica from different climatic regions. In the current study environmental cues related with seasonal change in PGM phenotype frequency was examined along with the correlation between PGM heterozygosity and overwintering success. Cessation of food influx was found to be effective by itself as an environmental cue that causes a sudden and sharp increase in PGM heterozygosity. In addition to that, PGM heterozygosity of the colonies with greater overwintering success was found to be significantly higher than the ones with intermediate or low overwintering success. Benefiting from the previous studies and the results of current study, ethyl oleate was suggested as a chemical signal that functions in the regulation of PGM heterozygosity.
