Graña Leon, Diego 22 May 2013 (has links)
The present study aims to explore the conceptions of health in a group of shamans from the Peruvian jungle. The participants were two women and eight men from the cities of Pucallpa, Tarapoto and Iquitos. We worked from the qualitative methodology and we conducted interviews in order to collect and analyze the information. We found that their conception of health includes the following dimensions: spiritual, emotional, corporal, mental and relationships. The spirituality stands out as a transversal element that goes within the understanding and the practical experience of the shamans in the health field. In addition, the body enhances as the main object of intervention. This multidimensional point of view expresses the integral conception that the shamans have about health, and that includes all dimensions of the human being. Con Alma : dialogues in decolonizing counseling--reciprocal ethnographic explorations in indigenous spaces for community healing

Enciso Litschi, Alicia Elizabeth 25 September 2014 (has links)
Postcolonial critiques have emphasized the need for Western psychology to become more reflective of the histories, worldviews, and lived realities of historically marginalized communities across the globe (Comas-Díaz, 2000; Duran & Duran, 1995; Pickren, 2009). These works have included the contributions of liberation psychologists who advocate for the need to privilege the knowledge systems, concerns, and perspectives of local communities when proposing avenues for psychological research, intervention, and theoretical development (Watkins & Shulman, 2008). Recognizing the legacies of colonialism in North America, U.S. psychologists working with Indigenous communities have advocated for better collaboration with grassroots elders, teachers, and community groups, noting the importance of recognizing the validity of Indigenous epistemologies and the colonizing tensions that still exist between Indigenous healing systems and Western psychology (Duran, Firehammer & Gonzalez, 2008; Gone, 2007; Gone & Alcántara, 2007). Against this backdrop, the present research was carried out as an immersive, long-term ethnographic study in collaboration with Alma de Mujer (Alma), a community of Indigenous-identified women in central Texas, who are committed to creating accessible spaces for their communities to practice Indigenous lifeways and healing. Employing reciprocal ethnographic methods, the author spent two years participating in events and gatherings with the Alma community, as well as conducting in-depth interviews. Community members were consulted on an ongoing basis about the development of the research. The document centers on four objectives: First, the author traces the history of the Alma community as it emerged from social liberation and psychospiritual healing movements over the latter half of the 20th century. Second, based on the women's stories, the author presents community members' narratives about how healing is situated within the community's Indigenous knowledge systems. Specific attention is given to the holistic and reciprocal nature of healing in these stories. Third, the author includes contributions from Indigenous healers who remark on their experiences of the tensions between Indigenous healing systems and Western mental health institutions. Fourth, the author concludes with a personal critical reflection as a trainee in Western psychology and considers how dialogues between local Indigenous communities and Western psychology might be further explored. / text

Curanderismo: Teresa Urrea and the Legacy of Dissent

Brown, Stacy Suzanne January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Dwayne E. Carpenter / The thesis offers an introduction to curanderismo and a critical analysis of the legacy of nineteenth century curandera and folk saint Teresita Urrea. The daughter of an indigenous servant in rural Mexico, Teresita ultimately became an icon of powerful social influence, a political threat to the Mexican dictatorship, a harsh critic of formalized medicine, and an enemy of the Catholic Church. Her legacy, however, is nuanced by her complex and, at times, contradictory life. / Submitted to: Boston College.

Burelle, Marie-Andrée 08 1900 (has links)
Since the second half of the 19th century, the Guatemalan religious landscape has undergone important transformations. The advent and the exceptional expansion of new protestant movements have prompted the progressive reorganization of the religious space which was, until then, relatively homogenous and triggered ideological confrontations between the various belief systems. In this tumultuous coexistence, shamanism must struggle to preserve its pertinence and to avoid falling into oblivion. By analyzing the therapeutic activity, this thesis aims at elucidating the shamanic-pentecostal relational dynamic. The portrait of the religious context and the historical developments are used as a basis for the study of the mutual perceptions between shamans, pastors and converts. This approach allows us to shed some new light onto the curanderos and brujos’ perceptions of the pentecostal pastor within the guatemalan medico-religious pluralism. However, it also allows us to deepen our understanding of the degrading perception of ancestral beliefs within the pentecostal movement. These viewpoints and the observation of the respective curative rituals thus lead me to consider closely the connections existing between these two a priori distinct universes whereas certain continuations on the therapeutic level between the two belief systems can be perceived. The field investigation finally suggests that in parallel to these perceptions and similarities, the presence of the pentecostal movement have influenced shamanic practices, leading holders of traditional knowledge to operate apparent modifications into the plan of their own ritual practices, customs and beliefs according to the pentecostal system of values.

African Healing in Mexican Curanderismo

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The worldviews and associated healing traditions of West and West Central sub-Saharan Africans and their Afro-Mexican descendants influenced the development of curanderismo, the traditional healing system of Mexico and the Southwest United States. Previous research on curanderismo, e.g. Colson (1976), Foster (1987), Ortiz de Montellano (1990), and Treviño (2001), generally emphasizes the cultural contributions of Spanish and Mesoamerican peoples to curanderismo; however, little research focuses on the cultural contributions of blacks in colonial Mexico. Mexico had the second-largest enslaved African population and the largest free black population in the Western Hemisphere until the early nineteenth century (Bennett 2003:1). Afro-Mexican curanderos were regularly consulted by members of every level of Spanish colonial society (ibid:150, 165, 254–55; Restall 2009:144–45, 275), often more commonly than indigenous healers (Bristol and Restall 2009:174), placing Afro-Mexican curanderos “squarely in the mainstream of colonial curing practices” (Bristol 2007:168). Through analysis of literature on African medicine, enslaved Africans in colonial Mexico, and Afro-Mexican healing practices, I suggest that the ideas and practices of colonial blacks played a more important role in the formation and practice of curanderismo than previously acknowledged. The black population plummeted after Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821 CE; however, through analysis of African-American, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Latino religious and healing traditions, La Santa Muerte, and yerberías and their products in twentieth and twenty first century Mexico, I suggest that black healing traditions continued to influence curanderismo throughout Mexico’s history. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Religious Studies 2016
