Filling the Halls with English: Creating Self-Regulated Learners Through Co-Curricular Activities

Tavares, Sharon Lynn 27 April 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This project investigates the benefits and practicality of applying Zimmerman's (1994) dimensions of self-regulated learning to co-curricular activities so as to increase students' willingness and opportunities to communicate in English in the hallways of intensive English programs. Three of these dimensions (social environment, motivation, and physical environment) work together to create a semi-structured liaison between in and out of class communicative environments and give students an occasion, location, and motivation to speak English with one another. To evaluate the effectiveness of such activities and conceptualize a means in which to assist intensive English programs effectively incorporate co-curricular activities in their curricula, the principal researcher designed and conducted a co-curricular activity based self-regulated learning. She obtained student feedback using surveys and interviews and found that the majority of students spoke mostly English, made new friends, practiced listening and speaking skills, and enjoyed themselves at this activity. As a result of this data, the principal researcher created a booklet to assist in the planning of future co-curricular activities. While only a preliminary study, this data and resulting booklet have great potential to fill the hallways of intensive English programs with English and thus create a holistic learning environment.

'n Ondersoek na die rol van leerderaktiwiteite in opvoeding vir volhoubare lewe / Elizabeth Maria Harris

Harris, Elizabeth Maria January 2008 (has links)
Environmental Education is widely considered to be indispensable for realizing behaviour which supports sustainable life. Several international declarations and South African policy documents plead for the inclusion of environmental education processes at all levels of formal education. The White Paper for Education and Training (1995) stipulates that environmental education should be presented in accordance with an interdisciplinary, integrated and active approach to learning. The aim of this study was to investigate the role a learner activity plays in the decisions learners make to live more in the interest of the sustainability of the environment. Three schools that are engaged in the project Build capacity for life were selected. The project aims at implementing an environment management system at the schools by means of which the environment forms an integral part of school management and of the curriculum. The study is performed as a qualitative case study in which data was collected by means of observation, focus group sessions and interviews. The learner involvement in the staging of an activity that dealt with energy consumption and the influence thereof on the environment was investigated. Firstly, the collected data was organised by means of matrixes and brain charts and then analysed with the help of plotting charts. The findings indicate that learners are capable of recognising the relationship between electric energy, littering and air pollution. Learners are aware of the impact they as energy consumers have on the environment and could list methods according to which they creatively save energy on the school grounds and at their homes. Their performance is testament to a responsible attitude towards the environment and to the fact that they are convinced of the value of making people aware of environmental issues. From this, it can be inferred that, should channels and structures exist at schools by means of which learners can gain access to the management of their schools, they would be able to make contributions to promoting the sustainability of the environment. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2009.

Mimotřídní aktivity jako podpora ŠVP / Extra-class activities as a support to the school educational programme

Horáková, Nina January 2011 (has links)
TITLE: Extra-curricular activities as a support to the School educational programmes SUMMARY: The diploma thesis deals with the theme of extra-curricular activities and their supporting the curricular documents. The objectives of this thesis are to describe how extra-curricular activities support the School Education Programmes and the acquisition of the cross-curricular subjects after class. To meet these objectives the author applies triangulation of qualitative methods with the grounded theory design. The benefits of this thesis lie in pointing out the fact that leisure time activities can support the acqusition of the cross curricular subjects in schools and the provision of further findings about the possibilities of extra-curricular activities within the frame of the School Education Programmes.

Motivational Practices - Creative Teaching and Learning through Cross-Curricular Activities : Using cross-curricular activities in order to promote students' motivation to the subject of English

Petersson, Casper January 2019 (has links)
This study aims to analyze and evaluate how cross-curricular activities could be used with the science-program in the ESL-classroom in order to raise and nurture students’ motivation. The study also aims to identify the determining motivational factor(s) in the ESL-classroom. Finally, the study aims to analyze and evaluate how teachers can make use of Dörnyei’s motivational taxonomy in order to conduct motivation based teaching. This study is divided into three different parts. The first part is analyzation of three different lessons by using a thematic logbook. The first lesson was conducted through a ”traditional” approach, while the second and third lesson was conducted through a creative approach which involved a cross-curricular activity. The second part is the carrying out of student surveys to compare the lesson observations with students’ responses in order to find possible factors that improve motivation and interest. The third part is analyzing the result by Dörnyei’s taxonomy in order to investigate the impact of the teaching on students’ motivation. The results of this study show that cross-curricular teaching has a positive impact on students’ motivation towards the subject of English, and it is also one of the determining motivational factors. The second factor is the active participation and encouragement from the teacher. A cross-curricular assignment was created and carried out in order to demonstrate how cross-curricular activities can be used in the ESL-classroom. Finally, the results from the application of Dörnyei’s taxonomy shows that teachers can make use of the taxonomy to reflect on previous lessons in order to identify if the right conditions for motivation were created and protected.

Využití mimoškolních zkušeností dětí ve školním vzdělávání / Use of children extra-curricular experience during school education

Kaletová, Ilona January 2018 (has links)
TITLE: Use of children extra-curricular experience during schoole ducation AUTHOR: Ilona Kaletová DEPARTMENT: Department of the primary pedagogy SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Anna Tomková, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: This diploma thesis deals with the possible use of out-of-school experiences of children in school education. In its first part, I will compare formal and informal education. I will look for similarity and difference and, above all, the contribution of non- formal education to formal education. Specifically, I will focus on the non-profit organization The Woodcraft League. At the end of this part, I will compare the formal education and lifelong education of the examined children's organization. The practical part is specifically focused on the village school and the children's tribe that I lead. Using the observation method and interviews with teachers and pupils visiting the examined club, I will look for the benefit of the children's tribe for pupils in the village elementary school. Apart from that, I organize thematic units at school that expect the possibility of using out-of.school experiences of children in school education. The result of this diploma thesis is that the school pupils do benefit from the children's tribe. However, the degree and intensity may differ, depending on the interests of the individual...
