The Life of Pictures follows Charles Dana Gibson and John Sloan, two illustrators and artists, alongside millions of other Americans who used illustrated media to situate themselves within a radically and rapidly modernizing culture at the turn of the 20th century. This was a time when new popular and commercial media forms like magazine illustration and advertisements were displacing older markers of cultural authority – and ordinary people looked to these new forms to reimagine who they were and what they could be. In this context, The Life of Pictures argues that Sloan and Gibson, together with thousands of other illustrators, helped to define a popular visual culture that was embraced by the rising new middle class – one which projected different “modern” ways of claiming social place, navigating relationships across genders, and more broadly, interacting with the world.
The illustrators’ images implied a more mutable, aspirational, and hidden class order wherein middle-class people could be less concerned with policing their class’s cultural boundaries, acting to simultaneously normalize, valorize, generalize, and obscure the fundamental social and economic uncertainty that middle-class Americans experienced. By drawing from diaries and biographies as well as scrapbooks and personal albums from across the nation, The Life of Pictures examines the relationship between a cultural change, the people who shaped it, and the people who lived it.

The history of San Luis Obispo and its surrounding areas is complex. Agriculture, innovation, and immigration have all contributed to the formation of the region. The Spanish, Mexican, and early American periods established the framework successive waves of immigrants had to live within. Native Americans and immigrants from China, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, the Philippines, and other regions of the United States have all toiled in the fields and contributed to America’s tables at various points throughout county history. Many contingencies determined the treatment of successive waves of immigrants. Growth and development are taking place at exponential rates on the very land that witnessed the first local agriculture and the conflicts surrounding the burgeoning industry.

The theme of this thesis is attitude of the Communist Party and Czechoslovak totalitarian regime to Zionism in 1947-1957. The main aim of the archive research was to map gradual change of the communist regime from its position of the supporter of Zionism to that one of convinced anti-Zionism (nearly to anti-Semitism). Support of Zionism was primarily presented by help to the nascent state of Israel in 1947-1949. The evidence is given by the role of Czechoslovakia at meetings of the United Nations General Assembly in 1947 and its role as a member of United Nations Special Committee on Palestine. Furthermore, supplies of military equipment to Israel, diplomatic support, demographic support and training of Jewish brigade in Czechoslovak territory in 1948. Gradual change to anti-Zionist position at the end of 1940s and beginning of 1950s is illustrated with complicated negotiations on economic cooperation and with interfering of the regime in running of Jewish religious communities and Zionist organisations. During the first half of 1950s the support turned into downright opposition and lead in a diplomatic quarrel caused by the Slánský trial which had definitely anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist dimension. The cumulative dissertation at hand addresses the question of how promising the successful implementation of the WFD is. Since research on implementation deficits has so far mainly considered national and sub-national levels, regional and local scales are taken centre stage within the dissertation. The Hase river catchment, which is located in one of Germany s most intensive livestock areas, serves as an example. The thesis shows that the procedural character of the WFD and regulative uncertainties give way to interpretation and action leeway, which will be pivotal to judgement on implementation success at lower levels. Moreover, the consistent operationalisation of nitrate limits in particular has led to major difficulties during implementation in Germany from which restraints can be expected for the preparation of river basin management plans and the program of measures. As to the regional level, implementation restraints also upraise due to socio-economic dependencies from agriculture and a high identification of the regional population with this economic sector have placed agriculture in a powerful position. In conclusion, one can state that various implementation restraints occur and the cause of these can be found at all scales European, sub-national and regional. The results of this dissertation concerning the multi-level system reveal that the relationship and interaction of the various scales will be given increased attention during the implementation process of European environmental policy. Besides the national and sub-national scale, the regional and local levels will be of equal importance. The question of suitable scales for implementation decisions and measures also offers pivotal approaches to undertake future research. Further research needs occur with new regional studies at national and international scales, with regard to the future of water protection in the course of the reform of German federalism and the current debate on climate change.

Résumé : Musicienne et traductrice de formation et de métier, je présente ici des traductions de poèmes contemporains qui s’annoncent, par leur titre ou leur forme, comme des fugues. Comme hypothèse de départ, je pose la possibilité du transfert des éléments de fugue musicale à ceux de la fugue littéraire. Ma démarche se décline en deux parties. Dans un premier temps, j’analyse les poèmes en suivant pas à pas la méthode de critique des traductions littéraires d’Antoine Berman. La méthode est adaptée à la traduction intersémiotique et rend compte des éléments de fugue contenus dans chacun des poèmes à l’étude. Dans un second temps, une fois le « projet de traduction » bien établi, je propose une traduction française des fugues-poèmes. Dans l’esprit de ce que Barbara Folkart nomme des « traductions d’auteur », dans le rendu proposé, je m’éloigne des approches dénotatives, tentant de réactualiser en français la démarche compositionnelle des poètes. Que retiendront les poètes pour leur projet de fugue-poème? Une confusion est-elle possible avec d’autres formes répétitives, comme le canon, le thème et variations, le ground, la chaconne, la passacaille, voire des formes de musique minimaliste? Malgré les appréhensions d’un certain nombre de critiques, qui taxent de « vaines » toute expérience intersémiotique ou toute tentative pour en démontrer les correspondances, on trouve quelques exemples probants de fugues littéraires. Bien entendu, la musique ne peut se traduire directement en mots. En s’attardant aux phénomènes perceptuels et créatifs, on accède à un degré correct de pertinence.
Je me suis donné pour méthodologie le modèle de critique des traductions littéraires d’Antoine Berman, dont j’ai fait l’ossature des chapitres et auquel j’ai greffé des grilles d’analyse paradigmatique et rythmique. J’ai aussi eu recours à un pense-bête des principaux éléments fugaux (constituants de la fugue musicale, définitions de « fugue » dans la langue courante et critères psychiatriques de la « fugue dissociative »). Un questionnaire maison a été le point de départ de mon travail de collaboration avec les poètes. Dans le cas de Paul Celan (1920-1970), j’ai utilisé le même questionnaire, que j’ai rempli au gré de l’analyse et du dépouillement d’autres recherches.
J’explore dans les six premiers chapitres les poèmes « Todesfuge » (1945) de Paul Celan, « Night Thoughts on Clauzewitz’s On War » (1986) d’E. D. Blodgett, « Lives of the Great Composers » (1983) de Dana Gioia, « Domestic Fugues » (2009) de Richard Newman, « Art of Fugue » (2011) de Jan Zwicky » et « Arugula fugues » (2001) d’Adeena Karasick. Dans la conclusion, je discute les résultats de recherche, les choix méthodologiques et le processus de traduction. Un tableau-synthèse des correspondances fugales est aussi présenté et commenté. Le chapitre intitulé « Stretto » vient élargir le corpus des fugues-poèmes analysées et traduites. J’y présente les fugues-poèmes suivantes : « Fugue » et « Round » de Weldon Kees, « Fugue in Cold and Rain » et « Little Fugue of Love and Death » de Richard Newman, « The Praying Mantis » d’Annie Charlotte Dalton Armitage, « The Ballad of the Pink-Brown Fence » de Milton Acorn, « The Children are Laughing » de Gwendolyn MacEwen, « And the Season Advances » d’Herménégilde Chiasson (dans une traduction de Jo-Anne Elder et de Fred Cogswell), « Fugue » de Robyn Sarah, « Fugue » du Kaddish d’Allen Ginsberg, « Fugue » de Neville Dawes, « Seaside Canon » de Julia Galef et « Stretto » de Don MacKay. // Abstract : As a professional musician and translator, I am presenting my translations of contemporary poems that are, either through their titles or their forms, fugue-poems. It is my hypothesis that elements present in a musical fugue can be transferred to a literary fugue. There are two parts to my research. First, I analyze the poems in strict accordance with Antoine Berman’s critical method for literary translation. I adapted the method in order to work with inter-semiotic translation, as well as the fugal elements contained in each of the poems studied. Next, with the “translation project” well established, I propose a French translation of the fugue-poems. Based on Barbara Folkart’s notion of “writerly translations,” I will attempt to capture the essence of the poems and recreate true works of literary art in French, rather than using purely denotative translation methods. Which elements do poets employ in their fugue-poems? Is there a possibility of confusing fugal elements with other repetitive forms, such as a canon, a theme and variations, a ground bass, a chaconne, a passacaglia or even certain forms of minimalist music? Despite the apprehension of some critics, who believe that inter-semiotic work or even the attempt to reveal any form of relationship is in vain, there are a number of clear examples of literary fugues. Naturally, music cannot translate directly into words. However, a study of the perceptual and creative phenomena allows us to make the connection. My research methodology is based on Antoine Berman’s model meant for critics of literary translations, which provides the backbone for the chapters in this presentation, and to which I have added a paradigmatic and rhythmic analysis grid. I also used a memory aid of the principal fugal elements (components of a musical fugue, definitions of a “fugue” in common usage, and the characteristics of the psychiatric disorder referred to as “dissociative fugue”). I designed a questionnaire, which I used as the basis for my collaboration with the poets. In the case of Paul Celan (1920-1970), I used the same questionnaire, which I filled out based on my analysis of his work, as well as analyses put forth by other researchers. In the first six chapters, I explore the following poems: “Todesfuge” (1945) by Paul Celan, “Night Thoughts on Clauzewitz’s On War” (1986) by E. D. Blodgett, “Lives of the Great Composers” (1983) by Dana Gioia, “Domestic Fugues” (2009) by Richard Newman, “Art of Fugue” (2011) by Jan Zwicky and “Arugula fugues” (2001) by Adeena Karasick. In the conclusion, I discuss the research results, the methodological choices and the translation process. I have also included a summary table (with comments) of the corresponding fugal elements. The chapter entitled “Stretto” concludes the corpus of analyzed and translated fugue-poems. Anatomy of a pin-up : a genealogy of sexualized femininity since the Industrial AgeLipsos, Eleni January 2013 (has links)
Pin-up images have played an important role in American culture, in both their illustrated and photographic configurations. The pin-up is viewed as a significant representational cultural artifact of idealistic and aspirational femininity and of consumerism and material wealth, especially reflective of the mid-twentieth century period in America spanning the 1930s to the 1960s. These images not only reflect great shifts in social mores and women’s social status, but also affected changes in both areas in turn. Furthermore, pin-up images internationally circulated in magazines, advertising and promotional material, contributed to the manner in which America was idealized in Europe and beyond. Crucially, they influenced how an eroticized and glamorous, yet unrealistic, example of femininity came to be generalized as a desirous model of femininity. In recent years there has been vital, though limited, scholarly research into the cultural and social impact of pin-up imagery, to which this thesis adds to. This thesis takes a genealogical approach, charting the development of popular female-centric “pin-up” imagery in America since the 1860s and up to the 1960s, and its resurgence since the 1980s onwards. In doing so this thesis aims to provide a social, political and cultural context to the emergence of a specific archetypal sexualized femininity, with the aim of challenging the tendency to dismiss sexualized imagery as “anti-feminist” or as trivial. Toward that end, I examine the complexity of intentions behind the production of “pin-up” images. In taking this revisionist approach I am better able to conclusively analyze the reasons for the resurgence and reappropriation of pin-up imagery in late-twentieth- and early-twenty-first-century popular culture, and consider what the gendered cultural implications may be.
