How to Implement Multi-Master Replication in Polyhedra : Using Full Replication and Eventual Consistency

Holmgren, Sebastian January 2006 (has links)

A distributed, real-time database could be used to implement a shared whiteboard architecture used for communication between mobile nodes, in an ad-hoc network. This kind of application implies specific requirements on how the database handles replication and consistency between replicas (global consistency). Since mobile nodes are likely to disconnect from the network and connect again at unpredictable times, and since a node may be disconnected an arbitrary amount of time, this needs to be treated as normal operation, and not as failures.

The replication scheme used in the DeeDS architecture, and the PRiDe replication protocol are both suitable for a shared whiteboard architecture as described above. Since the mobile nodes are likely to be some kind of hand-held device (e.g., used by rescue personnel to exchange information), the database system should be suitable for use in embedded systems. The Polyhedra Real-Time Relational Database (RTRDB) and the TimesTen database are two such systems. A problem is that neither of these two database systems have a replication scheme suitable for use in the previously described type of architecture.

This dissertation presents two design proposals for how to extend the Polyhedra RTRDB with support for multi-master replication of data using full replication and eventual consistency. One design proposal is based on the DeeDS architecture and the other is based on the PRiDe replication protocol. The proposal based on DeeDS puts a number of requirements on the underlying database and is not easy to port to another DBMS since it makes use of Polyhedra specific API’s. The proposal based on PRiDe on the other hand requires no instrumentation of the underlying database and is thus easier to port to other database systems.

A system-based approach to land registration analysis and improvements : a case study of the KwaZulu-Natal deeds registration system.

Shange, Muzikayise B. January 2010 (has links)
This study proposes a system-based approach to land registration ana lysis using the case of the KwaZulu-Natal Deeds Registry in Pietermaritzburg. The study seeks to; (i) investigate and analyze the land registration system (as a whol e) in terms of its key processes, data stores and data flows (ii) assess, based on the na ture of the data stores, data flows and processes, the turn around time of the as is (manual) and the to be (computerised) systems, and (iii) recommend improvements based on ident ified gaps and bottlenecks. The study identified two key role players in land regis tration; the Conveyancers (responsible for deed drafting) and Deed Registry (deed examination and approval). The interaction between the two, which has its own challenges , ensures the proper application of complex legislation related to the registration of land. To gain deeper insight into the activities of the land registrati on system, key informant interviews were held and several documents were reviewed to understa nd the data sources and their formats, processes performed, storage and acc essibility of such data as well as the internal and external data flows across Conveyancers , Deeds Registry and other stakeholders. In this regard, the land registration system wa s decomposed into a number of data flow diagrams (DFDs); namely context (system as a whole), top level (system as composed of main subsystems) and lower level (deta iled sub systems) to identify the core data stores, data flows and processes. Based on these diagrams, manual and electronic data stores, proces ses and data flows were identified and turnaround time of the as is (manual) and the to be (computerized) systems was derived and compared. A conventional case of a deed of transfer - from deed of sale to registration of the deed of transfer was used. The res ults showed that significant gains in turn around time, from 70 to 9 days can be realized through comput erisation of certain key data stores, processes and data flows. Recommendat ions for improvement were then generated based on the system diagrams and turn around times. The study thus demonstrates the potential of a holistic approach to la nd registration analysis and improvement. / Thesis (M.Env.Dev.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2010.

XIX) / Real estate chess: the human pieces, chessboard of land and new rules of the game in 19th century, Caldas-MG

Carlos Eduardo Rovaron 09 December 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to assess the process of legal formalization of land purchase after 1822 when Brazil became independent as yet another condition of land valuation in the country, parallel to the reasons that have been traditionally discussed by the historiography on Agrarian History. Such process was triggered by the need to render credit more dynamic in a seldom monetized economy, having both preceded and influenced the rise of private property in Brazil, and included the drafting of laws to promote greater clarity and legal safety for the respective contracts. To this end, the legal modifications not only reformed and produced contractual rules and procedures, but also provided for the establishment of the notarial system and the relevant Real Estate Registry Offices (Brazils registers of deeds) and the Notary Public Offices, whose activities were integrated: the Notary Public Offices were used to control contract drafting according to the formalities set forth by law, whereas the Real Estate Registry Offices were used to render the contracts public. In order to concentrate contractual information at the registries and offices and ensure the public awareness thereof, the State gradually discouraged contractual transactions closed by means of private instruments upon the enactment of successive laws that gradually limited the legal safety and validity thereof. The greater clarity and legal safety brought forth by this process not only enabled mortgage credit to become more dynamic, but also provided for new scenarios in land purchase, thereby resulting in land valuation in favorable conditions.

Haptic performativity: exploring the force of bodies and the limits of linguistic action in silent protests

Lavender, Luke 25 April 2022 (has links)
This thesis engages with the tension between political action and political speech in political understanding. This tension arises in a context whereby speech is represented as the sine qua non of being political and the way to change the conditions of being political; specifically, this thesis explores this tendency within a linguistic account of performative action (where action is understood through/as language effects). Against this backdrop, the thesis develops a notion of haptic performativity—performative action where the action (or doing) occurs without or in spite of linguistic (de)legitimation. Here, haptic performativity begins answering how marginalised populations act politically when defined by a lack of voice. To develop this notion—centering forms of action that occur in absentia of linguistic legitimation—the thesis: 1) reveals the disjunctive relation between deeds and speech with linguistic Performative Speech Act (PSA) theory; argues that 2) PSA theory reveals the inability for speech to convey the full force of bodily deeds within/through language; and, thereby, explores 3) how bodies or actors defined by a lack of social standing (or linguistic efficiency as a subject) remain politically impactful. Thus, while linguistic performativity gestures to the assembling power of speech (the power of already assembled subjects), conversely, haptic performativity testifies to the disassembling force of bodies who revolt without speech (the force of actors who are yet to be subjects). The thesis ends by bringing this haptic perspective into a contemporary context: the place of the body in the Black radical tradition of thought and the force of silent protests in the Black Lives Matter Movement. / Graduate

Zlitni, Mouna 14 October 2011 (has links)
The question of land property, use and transfer between the Indians of southern New England and the Puritans who settled among them has been the subject of a large literature and has always been a highly controversial issue. Giving the fact that this issue has always been referred to as a dispossession, we thought it interesting to go beyond this traditional perspective. Indeed, we propose to show that this movement of land transfer can be considered as a legal and just land transaction and that it was equitable to both parties. We also aim at presenting another image of the Indian; an image different from the one depicting him as a submitted Indian and a victim of colonial invasion and cultural assault. Our study is based on an ethnohistorical analysis of the land deeds that took place between the Indians and the English colonists in southern New England between 1620 and 1676.

Guillaume et Rainouart : figures du guerrier démesuré / Guillaume and Rainouart

Jingand, Florian 17 June 2014 (has links)
« Rainouart au tinel » and « Guillaume d'Orange » are figures, in their chanson de geste, ofexcessive warriors : supports of the monarchy, defenders of France, they are also troublemakers, each in their own way. Between epic and comic, paganism and Christianity, monstrosity andotherness, Guillaume and Rainouart draw both on a panel historical, literary and mythological.Burlesque and carnivalesque, Rainouart creates debate: based on extremes paradoxes, it is at oncepowerful knight and giant Saracen, turbulent monk and wacky cook. But the archetype on whichthis character is built is not exclusively medieval, and make considerable overlap with Dumezil'stheories, but also an expansion of these theories, as a bear, a kolbitr, but also a wild warrior.

Islamic belief: Imam Malik's doctrine of faith and practice

Rhil, Salim Faraj Salih January 2007 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Imam Malik b. Anas (d. 179 A.H.) is an important intellectual figure in Islam. He is the author of the first hadith collection, the Muwatta, and is the founder of one of the four major Sunni schools of law. His contribution towards formulating a distinct legal school allows millions of Muslims daily to perform their daily rituals of worship. Previous research, however, has not given enough attention to a systematic study of his beliefs. This study intends to address this shortcoming. My thesis examines the belief of imam Malik, particularly his concept of faith and the external expression thereof. It examines the first two eras of Islam, that of the Companions and Followers, which preceded him and their influence on his methodology of formulating his theological and legal views. It further looks at his approach to the textual evidences and his attitude towards speculative reasoning (kalam) regarding theological issues. This study further aims to verify the statements attributed to imam Malik regarding what constitutes correct faith and whether it increases or decreases. It also looks at the conflicting statements attributed to him regarding the increase and decrease of faith and tries to resolve them. Furthermore, it sources reliable biographical information on imam Malik to determine his attitude towards the diverse theological trends such as the Qadarites and Murji’ites prevalent during his time. In addition, the study compares the views of imam Malik with that of the other three founders of the Sunni Sunni legal schools.
