Working Real Hard, Haute Couture Style: An Inside Look of The Labor Control and Body Work in Model Management

Yang, Ya-Chin 14 February 2011 (has links)
In recent years, modeling industry in Taiwan has taken a great leap in both participation and popularity. Models in Taiwan can be splited into two groups by the presence (or the lack of) of their contracts with a modeling agency. The two groups are hardly similar in market price and position within their industrial hierarchy. The purpose of this master paper is to present how, and why there are different sets of game rules for the two groups. Also, the 2009 Lin Chi-Lin tax case raised much concerns to the very murky employer-employee dynamics in the industry - what exactly is the relationship between a model and their modeling agency anyway? The study sets sight on local Taiwanese models. In an attempt to hopefully draw a better picture of the Taiwan modeling industry, interviews were conducted with sixteen different interviewees that includes models and industry insiders, along with further observation and field study. Models presents their productivity through bodily exhibition, and the purpose of this paper is to look into these physical skill set, which starts with an understanding between asthetic labor and emotional labor. In terms of bodily performance, models are required to maintain a high level of consistancy, through utilizing embodied emotion and emotional memory to fit the requiremet of different clients. Models in contractual relationship with their modeling agency are subjected to the following institutional arrangemets ¡V contract-signing, training-course and case-by-case wage system. Those in the collaberative relationships are bounded by the collaberative system and getting paid case-by-case. These arrangements work differently with the different groups in terms of ideaology, and causing voluntary servitude with the systems. Models with proper contracts tend to believe that they are bounded by the rules and regulation of modeling agency, while the collaberative models believe that the only relationship tie with their representatives is the collaberative element of the profession. They are also the ones that are more likely to become agents later on in their career. My study has shown that the body of models are essentially the products in play, and modeling agency are capable of obtaining product exclusivity by signing more newcomers to exclusive representative contracts.

Experiencing Class Differences: The Case Of Subcontracted Cleaning Workers In Metu Dormitories

Erdemli, Oznur 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims at examining the class experiences of subcontracted cleaning workers who work in student dormitories on the METU campus. It focuses on the working conditions of workers and control mechanisms in the dormitories in terms of their effects on class consciousness and future dreams of the workers. In addition, the study examines how workers experience class as a matter of self- respect in their workplaces, how they cope with haughtiness of students, the managers and the regular employees, how they explain social inequalities and whether they accept them as legitimate. The role of gender in workers&rsquo / everyday lives is also mentioned. The study argues that university dormitories on the METU campus with their fragmented labor regime, and managerial tendencies, which treat the students as customers, are significant places for the observation of how class differences are experienced by the subcontracted workers. In regard to these issues, the field research of the study was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 23 subcontracted cleaning workers in 12 different dormitories on the METU campus.

Despotic Leadership and Job Satisfaction: Mediating role of Emotional Exhaustion

khan, Muhammad Tufail, Zafar, Hamza January 2021 (has links)
Purpose: Leadership is one of the very important as well as decisive factors in business environment. Following the Blau’s social exchange theory, this study discussed to analyze the despotic leadership effect on employees' job satisfaction in the Pakistani context. This research also analyzes the indirect association of despotic leadership and job satisfaction through the third variable named, emotional exhaustion (as mediator).  Method: Data is collected through an online self-administrated survey from employees working in the hotel industry of Pakistan. Descriptive analysis and inferential statistics were used. Moreover, conditional process technique was used introduced by Preacher and Hayes. Results: In conclusion, this study illustrates that despotic leadership style of the employees in hotel industry is a main antecedent of poor job satisfaction of the employees and this low job satisfaction becomes More low when employee experience the feelings of emotional exhaustion. Importantly, in this study it is found that emotional exhaustion does not mediate the relationship between despotic leadership and job satisfaction.  Originality: This research had added value to the existing literature on negative supervision in the hospitality sector, specifically in Pakistan. This has suggested organizations to identify prevalent despotic leaders and establish accountability mechanisms within the organizations.

Demography and Behavior of Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) Breeding on the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta, Alaska

Johnson, James Matthew 30 November 2006 (has links)
I conducted demographic and behavioral studies of Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) breeding on the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta, Alaska (1998-2005). In chapter one, I estimated apparent annual survival (product of true survival and site fidelity) while correcting for the probability of encounter for 237 males and 296 females. Overall return rates (individual returned to the site in a subsequent season) were lower for females (40%) than males (65%), as was apparent annual survival (± SE, females = 0.65 ± 0.05, males = 0.78 ± 0.03), and encounter rate (females = 0.51 ± 0.07, males = 0.74 ± 0.04). In chapter two, I examined the effects of mate and site fidelity on nesting success (N = 430 nests). Annual divorce rate ranged between 37-83%, with 17-63% of pairs reuniting annually. Reuniting pairs initiated clutches earlier than newly formed pairs, and clutches that were initiated early in the season had higher nest success rates compared to late-season nests. When I controlled for clutch-initiation date, nests tended by individuals with prior breeding-site experience had higher daily survival rates compared to birds breeding at the site for the first time. The effect of site experience was greater for males than females. In chapter 3, I reported that Western Sandpipers exhibited aggregated breeding behavior on a 36 ha plot. Breeding aggregations occurred when dominant and/or older individuals excluded younger, subordinate individuals from preferred habitat. The pattern of habitat occupancy conformed to an ideal despotic distribution with aggregated nesting birds in less preferred habitat experiencing lower reproductive success. In chapter 4, I described and demonstrated the form and function of parent-chick communication in the Western Sandpiper. Through experimental playback of adult vocalizations to chicks in the field, I demonstrated: (1) chicks respond to the alarm call by vocalizing relatively less often and moving away from the signal source, (2) chicks respond to the gather call by vocalizing relatively more often and moving toward the signal source, (3) and chicks respond to the freeze call by vocalizing relatively less often and crouching motionless on the substrate for extended periods of time. I also describe two distinct chick vocalizations (chick-contact and chick-alarm calls). / Ph. D.

從台灣違規高爾夫球場就地合法化:觀察國民黨政府國家力量的轉型 / The KMT state strength transition

陳必成, Cheng, Al Unknown Date (has links)
