Experimental Investigation Of The Seismic Behavior Of Panel Buildings

Shear-wall dominant multi-story reinforced concrete structures, constructed by using a special tunnel form technique are commonly built in countries facing a substantial seismic risk, such as Chile, Japan, Italy and Turkey. In 1999, two severe urban earthquakes struck Kocaeli and D&uuml / zce provinces in Turkey with magnitudes (Mw) 7.4 and 7.1, respectively. These catastrophes caused substantial structural damage, casualties and loss of lives. In the aftermath of these destructive earthquakes, neither demolished nor damaged shear-wall dominant buildings constructed by tunnel form techniques were reported. In spite of their high resistance to earthquake excitations, current seismic code provisions including the Uniform Building Code and the Turkish Seismic Code present limited information for their design criteria. This study presents experimental investigation of the panel unit having H-geometry. To investigate the seismic behavior of panel buildings, two prototype test specimens which have H wall design were tested at the Structural Mechanics Laboratory at METU. The experimental work involves the testing of two four-story, 1/5-scale reinforced concrete panel form building test specimens under lateral reversed loading, simulating the seismic forces and free vibration tests. Free vibration tests before and after cracking were done to assess the differences between the dynamic properties of uncracked and cracked test specimens. A moment-curvature program named Waller2002 for shear walls is developed to include the effects of steel strain hardening, confinement of concrete and tension strength of concrete. The moment-curvature relationships of panel form test specimens showed that walls with very low longitudinal steel ratios exhibit a brittle flexural failure with very little energy absorption. Shear walls of panel form test specimens have a reinforcement ratio of 0.0015 in the longitudinal and vertical directions. Under gradually increasing reversed lateral loading, the test specimens reached ultimate strength, as soon as the concrete cracked, followed by yielding and then rupturing of the longitudinal steel. The displacement ductility of the panel form test specimens was found to be very low. Thus, the occurrence of rupture of the longitudinal steel, as also observed in analytical studies, has been experimentally verified. Strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and story drifts of the test specimens were examined by evaluating the test results.

Extruded aluminium has become the material of choice for building envelope owing to its lightness, wide range of possibilities for profile design, durability and the eco-friendly attitude. In the light of recent technological developments in metal and glass industries, there has been various new approaches towards aluminum curtain wall systems which are mostly preferred by architects in high-rise buildings. Herein, the panel curtain wall system is determined as innovative and the modern aluminium curtain wall system. Furthermore, in the recent prestigious high-rise buildings, the demand of the architects and the contractors begins to replace the conventional curtain wall system which is constructed via stick construction technique, with panel curtain wall system which is applied to the building in a modular form . The main aim of this study is to investigate why the panel curtain wall system comes to the forefront especially for high-rise buildings. Accordingly, the basic architectural, structural and constructional design principles of unitized aluminium curtain wall systems are defined, analyzed and then the advantages and disadvantages of this system are pointed out from an architectural point of view. In order to evaluate the performance of panel curtain wall system against environmental factors, the facade tests, which are new and still-developing methods in Turkey, are used. The extensive facade tests have been conducted on full-scale specimen under field conditions reproduced in an equipped test chamber by authorized facade testing company and the assessment of this curtain wall performance was provided accordance with related standards. The two story full-size specimen, was 3000 mm to 7600 mm, belongs to one of the prestigious office towers constructed in Istanbul. The facade tests conducted to the specimen include watertightness, air permeability, wind resistance and building movement tests. In this study, the performance criteria of panel curtain wall system were investigated not only against environmental factors but also against human sourced factors. It is expected that this study will provide a guideline for system designers on the future research and development phase and for architects on the selection of curtain wall systems for their buildings due to the conducted test results and other advantages taken throughout this study.

Historic towns and historic buildings are important witnesses of the past cultures and civilizations. Their sustainability and transfer to the next generations require continuous maintenance and repair interventions which should be compatible with their original construction techniques, details and materials. In order to define proper interventions to a historic building, it is necessary to understand how and from what it is built. Therefore, traditional construction materials, detailings and techniques should be well understood prior to any kind of intervention to a historic building. The objective of this study is, first of all, to provide a body of knowledge on traditional construction process and techniques / then, to store, structure, process, represent and share this knowledge in a systematic and controlled way by means of a web based GIS portal. In this respect, traditional timber framed houses of Tarakli in Sakarya has been chosen as the case study, on account of being one of the significant historical towns in our country where the tissue together with historical building is still conserved. For this study, among the applications of GIS technology, Web-based GIS has been determined as the most effective and functional tool in order to develop an online information portal for storing, displaying the collected raw data and sharing with other users as utilizable information.

Modeling the post shear failure behavior of reinforced concrete columns

Numerous reinforced concrete buildings vulnerable to earthquake induced collapse have been constructed in seismic zones prior to the 1970s. A major contributor to building collapse is the loss of axial load carrying capacity in non-seismically detailed columns. Experimental investigations have shown that non-seismically detailed columns will only experience axial failure after shear failure and subsequent lateral shear strength degradation have occurred. Therefore, column shear failure and degrading behavior must be modeled accurately before axial collapse algorithms can be properly implemented. Furthermore, accurate modeling of the degrading lateral-load behavior of columns is needed if lateral load sharing between structural elements is to be assessed with reasonable accuracy during seismic analyses. A calibrated analytical model was developed that is capable of estimating the lateral strength degrading behavior of RC columns prone to shear failure. Existing analytical models poorly approximate nonlinear column behavior and require several nonphysical damage parameters to be defined. In contrast, the proposed calibrated model provides the engineering community with a valuable tool that only requires the input of column material and geometric properties to simulate column behavior up to loss of lateral strength. In developing the model, a database of RC columns was compiled. Parameters extracted from database column-tests were scrutinized for trends and regression models relating damage parameters to column physical properties and boundary conditions were produced. The regression models were implemented in the degrading analytical framework that was developed in this project. Two reinforced concrete columns exhibiting significant inelastic deformations prior to failing in shear were tested in support of the analytical work. A newly developed Vision System was used to track a grid of targets on the column face with a resolution of three-thousands of an inch. Surface column deformations were measured to further the understanding of the fundamental changes in column behavior that accompany shear and axial failure and validate the proposed analytical model. This research provides the engineering community with an analytical tool that can be used to perform nonlinear dynamic analysis of buildings that are at risk of collapse and help engineers improve retrofit techniques. Further insight into shear behavior attained through this project is an important step toward the development of better shear and axial degradation models for reinforced concrete columns. / text

Vulnerability in online social network profiles : a framework for measuring consequences of information disclosure in online social networks

The increase in online social network (OSN) usage has led to personal details known as attributes being readily displayed in OSN profiles. This can lead to the profile owners being vulnerable to privacy and social engineering attacks which include identity theft, stalking and re identification by linking. Due to a need to address privacy in OSNs, this thesis presents a framework to quantify the vulnerability of a user's OSN profile. Vulnerability is defined as the likelihood that the personal details displayed on an OSN profile will spread due to the actions of the profile owner and their friends in regards to information disclosure. The vulnerability measure consists of three components. The individual vulnerability is calculated by allocating weights to profile attribute values disclosed and neighbourhood features which may contribute towards the personal vulnerability of the profile user. The relative vulnerability is the collective vulnerability of the profiles' friends. The absolute vulnerability is the overall profile vulnerability which considers the individual and relative vulnerabilities. The first part of the framework details a data retrieval approach to extract MySpace profile data to test the vulnerability algorithm using real cases. The profile structure presented significant extraction problems because of the dynamic nature of the OSN. Issues of the usability of a standard dataset including ethical concerns are discussed. Application of the vulnerability measure on extracted data emphasised how so called 'private profiles' are not immune to vulnerability issues. This is because some profile details can still be displayed on private profiles. The second part of the framework presents the normalisation of the measure, in the context of a formal approach which includes the development of axioms and validation of the measure but with a larger dataset of profiles. The axioms highlight that changes in the presented list of profile attributes, and the attributes' weights in making the profile vulnerable, affect the individual vulnerability of a profile. iii Validation of the measure showed that vulnerability involving OSN profiles does occur and this provides a good basis for other researchers to build on the measure further. The novelty of this vulnerability measure is that it takes into account not just the attributes presented on each individual profile but features of the profiles' neighbourhood.

Aspects of the demographic profile and standard of pharmaceutical services in South Africa / J. Adsetts

The objects of the South African Pharmacy Council in terms of the Pharmacy Act, 1974 (5311974) as amended are, inter alia, "to uphold and safeguard the rights of the general public to universally acceptable standards of pharmacy practice in both the private and the public sector" as well as "to establish, develop, maintain and control universally acceptable standards of practice of the various categories of persons required to be registered.. ." One of the major difficulties health care providers worldwide are faced with is how to maintain a proper balance between the trio goals of health care, namely adequate access, high quality and acceptable costs (Li, 2003:192-193). Relatively little is known about such problems as do exist for patients regarding access to pharmaceutical services (Doucette et al., 1999:1268). Two main objectives were identified for this study, namely to investigate the demographic profile of community and institutional pharmacies registered with the South African Pharmacy Council; and to determine the standard of pharmaceutical services provided by these pharmacies. Inspection results of community and institutional pharmacies were obtained from the South African Pharmacy Council and extracted for the time period 1 January 2004 to 31 May 2005. To determine the demographic and geographic profile of these pharmacies, data of the Register of Pharmacies of the South African Pharmacy Council for August 2003, 2004 and 2005 were merged with the Census data of South Africa of 2001. It was found that the total number of pharmacies in both the public and private sectors increased with 2.1% (n=68) from August 2003 to August 2005. Public and private pharmacies that provided services directly to patients increased with 6.3% (n=33) and 1.3% (n=35) from August 2003 to 2005. It was found that the Gauteng province was the best provided with registered pharmacies in South Africa, as only 0.06% (n=5 783) of the population did not have any registered pharmacy available on municipality level. It was also revealed that the majority of inspections were carried out in Gauteng, whilst this province accounts for only 19.7% of the total population of South Africa. During the study period a total of 1178 community pharmacy inspections were carried out in 1103 community pharmacies (one or more inspections per pharmacy) representing 43% (n=2 550) of the total number of community pharmacies registered with the South African Pharmacy Council during May 2005. Nationally community pharmacies achieved a score of 92.27 (+ 6.65 per cent) for compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice guidelines. The lowest compliance score (73.34 + 27.49 per cent) was obtained for the availability of written standard operating procedures and the highest was for the promotion of public health (99.02 + 6.30 per cent). No practical significant differences (dc0.8) were found between the overall compliance scores obtained by community pharmacies of the different provinces. The highest compliance score was obtained by community pharmacies in the Free State (93.09 + 4.90 per cent), followed by Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu Natal, Limpopo, Northern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the North West. A total of 343 institutional pharmacy inspections (one or more inspections per pharmacy) were carried out in public and state subsidised institutions (n=245), private institutions (n=90) and mine hospitals (n=5). These pharmacies represented 46% of the total number of institutional pharmacies registered with the South African Pharmacy Council during May 2005. Nationally all institutional pharmacies (both private and public) achieved a score of 92.49 + 8.33 per cent for compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice guidelines for all above-mentioned aspects. The technological and innovational developments in steel and glass industries has enabled designers to create completely transparent fa&ccedil / ades. Building fa&ccedil / ade articulations designed to attain maximum transparency, have thus been executed with the contribution of elegant steel supporting systems, having heavy load bearing capacities, by minimizing the dimensions of structural systems. The aim of this study was to define, analyze and evaluate the accumulated knowledge on structural glass wall systems in general, with particular emphasis on those that may be denoted as &amp / #8218 / spider&amp / #8482 / glass fitting elements for potential applications, to formulate a design guide for professional designers. Hence, the primary elements of the system / the support structure, glass, glass connection joints and the other secondary elements have been evaluated within the architectural context. In the second part of the study, glass connection fitting elements were examined. Additionally the products developed by the manufacturing firms and commonly used in various projects were evaluated. Thereafter, whole document, data, photos of the spider fittings were combined in a spider fitting selection table, prepared and created by the author, which describes the types of spider fittings in detail. Finally, technical adequacy, experience, level of organization and workmanship within the context of Turkey, to evaluate the level of knowledge, were studied. In this regard, the glass wall facade the Akman Condomunium Business Center-Medicorium building, constructed with local materials and local manufacturing companies, was examined and compared with the Boeing Headquarters building in USA, which was constructed with a similair glass wall facade system.

This diploma thesis is composed of two parts. The practical part consists of complex 6 drawings A3 and 6 graphics A4 (drypoint) and preparatory sketches. Works are connected by theme of details of nature and show my own view and grasp of the topic. In the theoretical section discusses the importance of nature to man and the important role played by knowledge in its focus on detail. It compares the actual processing of selected Czech artists of the 20th century that dealt with the topic details or nature. It includes brief biographies and examples of works that served as a source of inspiration for this thesis. It also offers some suggestions on how to use the diploma thesis in educational practice, both the theme and selected techniques.

Tanto a Catedral como ambos os museus apresentam vários problemas relacionados à identificação de seu acervo, sendo a grande maioria das obras com procedência desconhecida. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi o de catalogar o acervo da Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Campinas, de 1840 à 1923, abrangendo imagens sacras, pinturas, detalhes arquitetônicos e a obra de talha. Foi possível rastrear e catalogar todo o acervo através de documentos primários e comparações iconográficas. Percebeu-se que, quanto à catalogação de imagens, a correta amplitude da pesquisa deveria partir de 1774 à 1923, uma vez que enquanto a Matriz Nova era construída, formava-se o acervo de imagens na Matriz Velha, mas com a consciência exata de que o acervo seria passado à nova matriz após sua inauguração. Foi possível também descobrir a autoria e o histórico das pinturas originais presentes na inauguração do templo em 1883, bem como descobrir o histórico e a autoria dos evangelistas e apóstolos da fachada, informações inéditas até o momento. Foram desvendadas a origem das estátuas externas do templo e a pesquisa em fontes primárias inéditas possibilitou encontrar equívocos na descrição do atual catálogo do acervo. A pesquisa da obra de talha, encontrou informações que fazem possível hoje, atribuir à quatro entalhadores o conjunto total da talha: Vitoriano dos Anjos, Bernardino de Sena, Raffaelo de Rosa e Marino Del Favero, os dois últimos italianos. Também foi possível atribuir obras a cada um, cuja autoria, até o momento, era desconhecida. Em sua abrangência, a pesquisa possibilitou desvendar o histórico das fachadas do templo e elucidar diversos acontecimentos como os acidentes durante o período de construção, os arquitetos participantes bem como suas contribuições ao templo, sistemas construtivos e materiais utilizados. Dentro ainda da arquitetura, também descobriu-se todos os elementos modificados e construídos na reforma de 1923. Além do catálogo das obras e da arquitetura, como complemento, foi criado um dicionário de todos os artistas que participaram do acervo, com informações biográficas. Esta catalogação deve servir então à duas propostas, como fonte de pesquisa acadêmica e como utilidade prática no uso diário do acervo. Como conclusão, percebe-se que a história da construção do templo e do acervo é muito mais rica, cheia de detalhes e acontecimentos do que até então se conhecia, fazendo desta pesquisa uma referencia para futuros trabalhos relacionados ao seu acervo e sua história / Abstract: The Catedral Metropolitana de Campinas is a religious temple that houses the Museu Arquediocesano de Campinas and the Museu da Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento. Both museums and the Cathedral, present several problems regarding the correct identification of its art collection, with most of the art work of unknown origin. The objective of this research was to catalog the collection of the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Campinas from 1840 to 1923. The collection includes sacred images, paintings, architectural details and carving works. This research made possible to trace and catalog the entire collection of the period thru analysis of primary documents and iconographic comparison. Regarding the image collection, the real amplitude of the research should comprehend the period from 1774 to 1923. As the New Church was being built, the collection of images was being formed at the Old Church, but with the certain that the collection would be transferred to the new site after its inauguration. It was also possible to discover the authorship and the history of the original paintings present at the inauguration of the temple in 1883, as well as the authorship and history of the Evangelists and Apostles statues at the façade. The origin of the external statues of the temple was unveiled and the research on unprecedented primary sources made possible to find misconceptions at the description of the current catalog of the collection. The research of the carving works revealed information that contributed to attribute four woodworkers to the whole carving work at the church: Vitoriano dos Anjos, Bernardino de Sena, Raffaelo de Rosa and Marino Del Favero, the last two Italians. It was also possible to attribute to each one, other artworks, which the authorship was unknown until now. Due to the wide scope of the research, it was possible to unveil the history of the façade construction and to elucidate many of the related events such as the accidents, the architects and their contribution on the project and construction of the temple as well as constructive systems and used materials. Still in the architecture scope, it was disclosed all the modified and built elements at the renovation in 1923. Aside the catalog of the collection, as a complement, it was created a dictionary of all the participating artists of the collection with bio info. The cataloging of the collection intend to attend two distinct proposes, as an academic resource and as a daily reference for the museums. In order to come to a conclusion, one can easily realize that the history of the construction of the temple and the gathering of its collection is far richer than could be imagined making this research a starting point and a solid anchor for future researches / Mestrado / Historia da Arte / Mestra em História
