Friction Bit Joining of Dissimilar Combinations of GADP 1180 Steel and AA 7085 – T76 Aluminum

Atwood, Lorne Steele 01 June 2016 (has links)
Friction Bit Joining (FBJ) is a method used to join lightweight metals to advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). The automotive industry is experiencing pressure to improve fuel efficiency in their vehicles. The use of AHSS and aluminum will reduce vehicle weight which will assist in reducing fuel consumption. Previous research achieved joint strengths well above that which was required in three out of the four standard joint strength tests using DP980 AHSS and 7075 aluminum. The joints were mechanically tested and passed the lap-shear tension, cross-tension, and fatigue cycling tests. The t-peel test configuration never passed the minimum requirements. The purpose of continuing research was to increase the joint strength using FBJ to join the aluminum and AHSS the automotive industry desires to use specifically in the t-peel test. In this study FBJ was used to join 7085 aluminum and GADP1180 AHSS. The galvanic coating on the AHSS and its increased strength with the different aluminum alloy required that all the tests be re-evaluated and proven to pass the standard tests. FBJ is a two-step process that uses a consumable bit. In the first step the welding machine spins the bit to cut through the aluminum, and the second step applies pressure to the bit as it comes in contact with the AHSS to create a friction weld.

Content, form and technique of traditional and modern praise poetry in Northern Sotho

Kgobe, Dominic Mamahlo 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a critical evaluation of the content, form and technique of traditional and modern praise poetry in Northern Sotho. Chapter 1 presents the aim of the study and the method of research and defines the concepts of poetry and praise poetry. Praise poetry is viewed from a traditional and modern perspective. Chapter 2 deals with the content and technique of praise poetry. Content consists of oral praise poetry lauding the heroic deeds of men in battles and casual encounters. Modern praise poetry comments on current events. Devices for rapid composition of the praises are discussed. Techniques differ between poets and according to time, place and occasion. Chapter 3 covers the traditional praises of chiefs, warriors, initiates, animals, birds, divining bones and totem praises, examining them from the perspective of content and form. The praises extol human achievements, peculiar animal characteristics and the interpretation of "mawa" of divining bones. Chapter 4 deals with the development and transition from traditional to modern form as well as the reciprocal influence. The content and form of modern praises of chiefs, academics, community leaders, animals, birds, divining bones, man-made objects and some natural phenomena are discussed. Many modern poets have also written praises of fictional characters. Chapter 5 compares oral and written praise poetry by concentrating on the similarities and differences between traditional and modern praise poetry. This study shows that there are differences in of theme, rhyme, beginning and ending, sentence length and significant emphasis on man-made objects such as cars and locomotives as exceptional modes of transport for commuters. Chapter 6 concludes the study and proves that praise poetry is a living or dynamic entity which will continue to exist. Praise poetry highlights persons, interpersonal relationships, attitudes and values derived from an African conceptions of the universe. / African Languages / D.Litt. et Phil (African Languages)

The objective of this work is to evaluate and compare the mechanical strength of welded joints made of the dissimilar steels such as Maraging 300 steel with 300M-ESR steel by the autogenous Plasma Arc Welding (PAW) and Laser welding process (LBW). The joints were submitted to the mechanical strength evaluation by tensile test and hardness Vickers (HV) at the weld bead and thermally affected zone. Chemical analysis and metallographic analysis of the welded joints were also performed, correlating the microstructure observed with the properties. In both processes, heat treatments were applied before and after welding, with the objective of at harden the materials and seeking to approximate the hardness of both steels and the fusion zone and heat affected zone. Several tests were carried using different times and temperatures to determine which ones were the best heat treatments to be adopted aiming the equalization of mechanical properties. The heat treatments applied after welding proved to be convenient for the leveling of the hardness values, only showing few losses in the HAZs of the Maraging steels. Applying of these treatments, it was also possible to note the equalization of tensile strengths, around 1300 MPa and considerable increases of the same, compared to the same condition without treatment. The welds showed to be efficient for the joining of the plates, however, in some situations the Laser welding presented small flaws, such as presence of pores, in the weld beads, causing to the reduction of the tensile strength limit.

Soldagem de chapas grossas em aço baixa liga temperado e revenido ASTM A514 com aço carbono ASTM A36 pelo processo arame tubular / Welding of ASTM A514 quenched and tempered low alloy steel thick plates with ASTM A36 carbon steel by FCAW process

Marcello Ferrari 09 December 2016 (has links)
In this work it was determined the conditions for welding thick plate of ASTM A36 carbon steel with quenched and tempered low-alloy steel ASTM A514 Grade Q employing the Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) process. For that several coupons of tests were welded in order to evaluate the most appropriate conditions for preparation and welding of these dissimilar materials. The preparation was carried out by means of thermal cutting. The preheat temperature was determined by mathematical models, the recommendations of standards AWS D1.1 and DIN EN 1011-2 being further evaluated using the CTS type weldability test - Controlled Thermal Severity. The welding parameters were determined by qualifying a welding procedure (WPS), according to AWS D1.1. The effects of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) were evaluated by Vickers hardness tests and Charpy. Microstructural characterization was performed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The characterization of oxi-fuel cut surfaces showed the effects of decarburization and also carburization. The preheating temperature of 160 °C determined by calculation and the methodology recommended by the standards was satisfactory in weldability tests. It was possible qualification of welding procedure (WPS) with impact requirements in the condition \"as welded\" but the condition \"after PWHT\" low toughness values obtained in the weld metal, less than 27J, did not allow to qualify a WPS with toughness requirements. The absence of intergranular cracking was observed in both the heat affected zone as the base metal ASTM A514, but the presence of fragile microphase in the weld metal was revealed in the weld metal in the condition \"as welded\" specifically in the root region, intensified by the effect of dilution. The carbon increase at root, the presence of fragile microphase, the large fraction of columnar grains and proeutectoid ferrite combined with the low fraction of acicular ferrite in the weld metal contributed to the low toughness values found in the condition \"as welded \". After PWHT there was a sharp drop in toughness, less than 27J, in the weld metal due to embrittlement caused by precipitation and coarsening of iron carbides.

Estudo da soldabilidade entre o aço austenítico alto manganês de efeito TRIP com o aço microligado ARBL pelo processo de soldagem TIG / Study of weldability of austenitic high manganese TRIP effect with microalloyed HSLA steel by TIG welding process

Juliana Aparecida Rodrigues 28 February 2014 (has links)
In view of the global trend of searching for the weight reduction of metal frames in vehicles, the development of superior mechanical resistance steels presents itself as an important factor for the competitiveness and sustainability of the Brazilian industry, as well as to user safety. In the automotive industry, the reductions in vehicle weight and fuel consumption not only require research of new types of steel but also the use of hybrid components, which result, amongst other things, between the union of austenitic innovative high alloy and low cost (TRIP) with commercial ferritic steels (HSLA). This dissertation analyses the microstructural mechanical properties before and after the TIG welding process, the TRIP steel, and HSLA used by the automotive industry. The main objective of this study was to evaluate possible phase changes in steel structures and transformation in the properties of the welded joints according to pre-determined welding parameters by analyzing extensions of the heat-affected and melted zones of welded specimens. The micro hardness profiles showed no significant changes in hardness in the heat affected HSLA steel, while the TRIP steel showed considerable increase. Additionally, the yield point determined by the traction tests performed, allowed the obtainment of the mechanical resistance levels of the welded joints. Through the tests of scanning electron and optical microscopy was observed the influence of heat input on heat affected zone of HSLA steel. EDX analysis allowed us to observe the presence of molten zones partially diluted in the side of the base metal HSLA, characterization of the chemical composition at the interface of the base metal and weld metal and predicting the microstructure in these regions. The phases present in the base metal and weld zone were characterized too by x-ray diffraction. By quantitative stereology characterized by the phases present in the weld zone and their proportions were determined as a function of heat input.

As a metal filler wire AWS-ERNiCrMo 3ARBL was used both in the buttering 8630M steel sheet as the welding filling. This is a welded joint similar to one of the most used joints in the oil sector that, by the last decade have shown some fractures by circumferential cracking, is being studied worldwide in order to identify the causes and safer solutions for your application. As parameter of fracture toughness is studied the CTOD (Crack Top Open Displecement) using type specimens SE(B) subjected to three point bending. The assays were performed in air after pre-doping cathodic hydrogen into water at 0°C synthetic sea, having to main references the standards ISO 12135: 2002 and ISO 15653: 2010 The results showed a significant susceptibility of the steel 8630M to retained hydrogen, reaching a embrittlement via CTOD around 25%. In turn, the dissimilar welding joint CTOD values present twice that of the base metal (steel 8630M), under the conditions with and without hydrogenation, had virtually no susceptibility to the cathodic hydrogen retained in their microstructure / O presente trabalho analisou a influencia do hidrogênio na tenacidade quase estática de uma junta soldada dissimilar constituída dos metais de base aços AISI 8630M e ASTM A36, classificados como aços ARBL (Alta Resistência e Baixa Liga).

Estudo da resistência à corrosão das ligas de alumínio 2024-T3 e 7475-T651 soldadas por fricção e mistura (FSW) / Study of the corrosion resistance of aluminium alloys 2024-T3 and 7475-T651 welded by friction stir welding (FSW)

Aline de Fátima Santos Bugarin 09 June 2017 (has links)
Friction stir welding (FSW) has roused great interest in recent years and it is now an alternative for joining materials of low weldability, such as the aluminum alloys of the 2XXX and 7XXX series, used in the aircrafts structure due to their high strength /weight ratio. However, FSW causes material microstructural changes, mainly in the stir zone (SZ), the heat affected zone (HAZ) or thermomechanically (TMAZ) affected zones of the materials welded. These generally interfere with the corrosive performance of the welded joint. In the present study, the corrosion resistance of the 2024-T3 and 7475-T761aluminum alloys, joined by FSW was investigated in 10 mM NaCl electrolyte. Agar-agar gel and immersion tests associated with microscopic techniques were performed to investigate the effect of galvanic coupling between the welded materials. Results from this test showed that, when galvanically coupled, the 2024 alloy acts as cathode and the 7475 as anode. Immersion tests revealed galvanic coupling between the alloys in the SZ. The zone most susceptible to corrosion was the TMAZ of the 7475. Intergranular corrosion was observed in this zone since the first hours of immersion. The influence of the welding process on the corrosion resistance of the alloys was also evaluated by electrochemical tests. The electrochemical tests adopted were open circuit potential measurements (OCP) as a function of time of exposure to the electrolyte, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization curves. The polarization tests showed high electrochemical activity in the stir zone indicated by the high current densities measured comparatively to the other tested zones. The global EIS results indicated that in the first few hours of exposure to the electrolyte the corrosion process was predominantly controlled by the 7475 alloy; however, with time of exposure to the electrolyte, the corrosion was controlled by alloy 2024.

Assemblage hétérogène cuivre-inox et TA6V-inox par les faisceaux de haute énergie : compréhension et modélisation des phénomènes physico-chimiques / Dissimilar joining of copper to stainless steel and TA6V to stainless steel by high power beams : understanding and modeling of physicochemical phenomena

Tomashchuk, Iryna 07 October 2010 (has links)
The present study is dedicated to the comprehension of the mechanism of materials mixing during dissimilar welding by high power beam sources. We have been interested in joining of two couples of metallic materials which present different metallurgical problems: • copper- stainless steel (miscibility gap, important difference in physical properties);• TA6V- stainless steel (oxidation on air, formation of intermetallic phases which made the joint brittle). For the first couple of materials, continuous laser Nd:YAG welding and electron beam welding have been applied. The experimental study of morphology evolution, composition, microstructure and mechanical properties has allowed establishing the hypotheses on formation of heterogeneous mixture between the materials having limited solubility. To quantify the physical phenomena of continuous dissimilar welding, the numerical modeling has been carried out by means of FEM software package "Comsol Multiphysics". A number of models reproducing temperature field, convection movements and mixing (diffusion, level set method, phase field method) between the materials has been created. In case of continuous laser welding, the pseudo-stationary formulation of heat transfer based on simplified key-hole geometry and convection has been coupled with two-dimensional problems of diffusion and mixing in horizontal planes. The electron beam welding presenting the nonlinear development of the weld has needed employing of temporary formulation. Final model including complete coupling (simultaneous multiphysical solving) reproduces the process of development of periodic solidification structure during electron beam welding and allows explaining the mechanism of formation of altered structures between immiscible materials which have important difference in thermophysical properties. The second couple of materials presents weldability problems due to formation of brittle intermetallic phases making direct joining by fusion impossible. The local elementary composition becomes the key-aspect of successful joining: the introduction of the third material (pure copper) having better compatibility with titanium is necessary. To determine the ranges of optimal operational conditions, numerical models created previously have been adapted to the case of four joining techniques: electron beam and laser Nd:YAG (continuous and pulsed) welding and laser brazing with filler wire. Elementary analysis of microstructures of resistant welds has allowed developing the solidification scenario and understanding the influence of local composition of heterogeneous interfaces on tensile properties of the joints. The multiphysical models created during this study allow rapid access to high quantity of data on behavior of melted zone in function of welding parameters basing on relatively limited input data and several simplification hypotheses. The multiphysical approach to welding modeling allows recreating the shape of melted zone, to visualization the convection movements and providing the cartography of several elements in good correspondence with experimental results. A set of models allows determination of operational parameters respecting fixed criterions determined by metallurgy of dissimilar couple.

Corrosion of Post-Tensioned Tendons Repaired with Dissimilar Grout

Rafols, Juan Carlos 01 January 2012 (has links)
A failure associated with steel corrosion was identified in early 2011 in a bridge external post-tensioned tendon, approximately eight years after construction. Large voids in the grout and pockets of non-homogeneous material were identified. The non-homogeneous grout was characterized by high moisture content, and in most cases, the chloride content was lower than conservative threshold values. The non-homogeneous grout also had high pH and high content of sulfates (approximately in the range of 10,000-ppm). As a result, there was an interest in the study of possible corrosion development in repaired systems in which the affected tendons have been re-grouted with dissimilar grouts. The presence of two distinct grouting materials, manifested by the existing/simulated base grout and a newly introduced repair grout, provided the dissimilar grout condition studied. Corrosion activity was monitored in un-stressed mock up assemblies, in sections retrieved from the failed tendon, and in samples immersed in simulated pore solution. Corrosion activity was monitored through macrocell current, linear polarization resistance, open circuit potential, potentiodynamic scans, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Samples in simulated pore solutions were studied at various pH levels and constituent concentrations. All samples were repaired or built with commercially available grouts. After analysis, no evidence of corrosion development was found when both existing and repair grout were free of material deficiencies. Corrosion activity was noted in the presence of nonhomogeneous grout and an increase in rate was observed due to macrocell coupling with sections containing normal grout. Results suggest that early exposure to sulfate to hydroxyl ion ratio as low 0.35 may prevent steel passivation and result in early high corrosion rates. Otherwise, sulfate to hydroxyl ratios as high as three may not be sufficient to initiate corrosion after formation of passive layer.
