A friendship for others : Bonhoeffer and Bethge on the theology and practice of friendship

Parsons, Preston David Sunabacka January 2018 (has links)
This study considers the theology and practice of friendship in Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s academic writing, his pastoral work and thought, his involvement in the Abwehr plot, and his prison letters, taking special interest in the influence of Eberhard Bethge on Bonhoeffer and the influence of Bonhoeffer on Bethge. Friendship, as a locus of interpretation, also provides a fresh perspective on other aspects of Bonhoeffer’s thought, including ecclesiology, divine and human agency, eschatology, vicarious representation, concrete ethics and the divine command, politics, freedom, and obedience. Part I of the dissertation investigates Bonhoeffer’s theology before Bethge. In Sanctorum Communio, Bonhoeffer’s doctoral dissertation and first book, friendship is described as a community that is oriented to God’s creation and eschatological future, and the friend can participate in Christ’s redeeming work through ecclesial practices of Stellvertretung. Bonhoeffer’s failed friendship with Helmut Rößler, and his remarks about friendship within the context of his ministry in London and about the relation between ethics and the concrete command, offer insight into his theology of friendship as a political and ecclesiastical phenomenon in the context of the Third Reich. Part II of the dissertation looks at the theological influence Bonhoeffer and Bethge had on one another. At Finkenwalde, we begin to see this mutual influence begin to take shape, where freedom and obedience become part of the foundation of Bonhoeffer’s later concept of the Spielraum, and where we begin to see Stellvertretung, as a practice, take place between them. In the prison correspondence and through the influence of Bethge, Bonhoeffer develops the idea of the “realm of freedom” (der Spielraum der Freiheit), an expansion of Bonhoeffer’s theology of the mandates, where freedom and friendship become part of his understanding of social and political life. Integrating these theological and biographical resources, the study makes the constructive argument that a friend can be a theological Stellvertreter, taking into special account the particularity of the friend and mutuality that is characteristic of friendship. Through this participation in Christ’s redeeming work, its ecclesial location, and its political significance, a friendship can be for others.

Tři učebnice estetiky (Hugh Blair, Johann Joachim Eschenburg a Johann August Eberhard). / Three textbooks of aesthetics (Hugh Blair, Johann Joachim Eschenburg and Johann August Eberhard).

Martinková, Zuzana January 2018 (has links)
The thesis examines three enlightenment textbooks of literary arts of that period, which were all published in 1783 and significantly contributed to dissemination of aesthetic ideas. Its primary aim is to determine how aesthetics, as a separate philosophical discipline, entered into these three selected textbooks of literary arts of that period, and in what ways it has influenced their interpretation. It raises a question of how the presence or absence of aesthetics influenced the concept of these texts not only as a whole, but also in developing specific theories, themes and ideas that are further compared in this thesis. It analyses the main sections of the textbooks and introduces their basic structure and specific opinions, which are then critically evaluated. The aim of the thesis is to examine the character of the interpretations and grasp the theories of particular kinds of arts depending on whether they were performed within or outside the framework of aesthetics. The presented thesis should contribute to a better understanding of the differences and similarities between German and Scottish reflections of aesthetic questions at the end of 18th century based on these three examples of textbooks.

Leonhard Hurter und die Akademisierung der Chirurgie – ein Student zwischen Medizin und Handwerk – / Leonhard Hurter and the academic professionalization of surgery – a student between medicine and craft

Ertl [geb. Wild], Elisabeth January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The subject of this doctorate project is the translation of Leonhard Hurter’s Theses inaugurales medico-chirurgicae and a subsequent comment on Hurter’s early modern dissertation. When Hurter obtained his doctorate in the 18th century, surgery had not yet become firmly established in the medical curricula in the Holy Roman Empire. While academic medicine was taught and practiced at universities, the reputation of surgery was significantly lower. Taking Italy as a role model, a couple of surgeons began to acquire academic knowledge towards the end of the 17th and at the beginning of the 18th century, which would grant them access to the universities and therefore provide the opportunity to gain political influence. Hurter’s dissertation represents the concept of an Universalis Medicina at the University of Tübingen and follows the trail blazed by early academic surgeons in Italy. A letter of announcement serves as a contextual source and helps to both analyze and emphasize the significance Hurter’s dissertation bears for the academic professionalization of surgery, a field frequently neglected in historical medical research. Moreover, the detailed examination of an early modern disputatio illustrates the potential of this text genre.

Logic of notions in Germany : 1684-1790. Some remarks for the study of the reception of Leibniz’s Meditationes de Cognitione, Veritate et Ideis by Christian Wolff and Immanuel Kant

Alain, Vincent 02 March 2012 (has links)
This Leibniz’s essay of few pages is a true discours de la méthode for the German philosophy. This research tries to justify this declaration and restores the reception of this short text by Christian Wolff and Immanuel Kant. This work studies the development of the Begriffsanalyse in Germany. But, what means analysis for Wolff and for Kant? The study of this logic of notions, its bond to mathematics and with the Cartesian conception of Mathesis universalis, clarifies the Kantian distinction between dogmatic method and dogmatism. This inquiry goes back to the Leibnizian origin of the classical division of analytic and synthetic judgments. This work comes to an end by the study of Eberhard’s critic of the Critic. In short, like Michel Fichant formulated, this study wants to make manifest that « behind German words of Kant lay down Latin words of Leibniz ».
