B.E.T. Building Ecological TransitionMannocci, Silvia 12 May 2022 (has links)
In the era of the Anthropocene, cities are facing significant social, economic and environmental changes that, unlike previous historical periods, are occurring extremely rapidly. The acronym b.e.t. - included in the title - refers to the word bet, whose definition is closely linked to the concepts of unpredictability and risk. But the word bet also refers to the notion of opportunity understood positively as the possibility of success. The challenge that the cities of the 21st century have to face concerns the overcoming of the limits and rigidities of the current urban planning, which seems inadequate to manage the new dynamics in action. The term resilience has been introduced in the lexicon of urban planning and architecture to support a new approach to the management of the contemporary city, capable of implementing the attributes of diversity, variability and redundancy of the urban system. The structure of this research wants to retrace the holistic nature of the theme and is proposed as a mosaic of projects, tools and strategies that have the potential to assemble each time in a different way. The objective is to emphasize the importance of triggering in the urban system a plurality of actions, capable of acting simultaneously on multiple levels to ensure processes suitable for change and multifunctional. This research does not intend to trace a defined path, the assumptions of flexibility and adaptability related to the definition of resilience do not allow to define a new urban planning technique based on a model to be followed for the management of the territory, but proposes an open framework of possibilities to guide the cities towards the ecological transition and make them increasingly livable, comfortable, happy, vibrant and beautiful.

The agroecological transition, as an incentive to process the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, implies the gradual construction of agroecological knowledge through the exchange of knowledge, experiences and interpretation of the farmers about the contexts in which they live and produce by setting up an alternate mode of production, in contrast to conventional current model. New ways to bring biodiversity conservation, self individual achievement and community, and the political and economic self-management, are priorities and urgent. This study aimed to systematise the agroecological transition experience of CooperAPAs, located in Parelheiros, south zone of São Paulo, through the identification of agroecology representations, healthy relationships, environment and public policy, and the main interests and difficulties of farmers and technicians involved in any specific time of training course, implementation and / or development of CooperAPAs. We used the method of systematization of experiences, having as research tools to document analysis, interviews and the timeline building workshop. In general, participants recognized both positive and negative impacts of their actions on health and the environment. Among the identified needs, there is increased awareness and empowerment of all members, so that they can contribute more actively in strengthening the cooperative in order to ensure greater access to existing public policies, market, and marketing, improving, consequently, social, environmental and economic conditions of these farmers. To this end, it recommends the adoption by the cooperative, participatory social and educational strategies such as social learning, to encourage dialogue, conflict negotiation and shared management, as a new way to CooperAPAs.

Étude juridique sur les petites et moyennes sociétés commerciales en transition écologique : l'entreprise sobre en contribution à une nouvelle approche de la RSE / Juridical study on small and medium-sized commercial companies in ecological transition : the sober enterprise as a contribution to a new approach to CSRBaudouin, Valentin 19 June 2019 (has links)
Business is an ambiguous idea of freedom, it is as much a vehicule of progress as a risk. The current ecological crisis is leading enterprises to take into account the effects of economic activity on society and environment. Pressured by new social standards, enterprises are led to change their conduct, especially through a societal and environmental responsibility approach. Then, it is the commercial company – the legal entity of the enterprise, not defined by french law – that is questioned in its definition and its social function. This is reflected in the recent reform of the french commercial company contract to consider social and environmental issues. It’s mainly the adoption of voluntary commitments that contributes to a change in the commercial company through the elaboration by private law persons of soft-law, i.e. norms devoid of coercion. As a post-modern law phenomenom, voluntary commitments lead the company to raise its standard behaviour to a higher degree of responsibility than de lege lata law, may succeed to the engagement of its legal liability. Also, the development of the social and solidarity economy’s corporate forms and the emergence of enterprises inspired by foreign models are a first breach in the classical commercial company approach. Noting the inadequacy of CSR and the corporate forms of responsible commercial companies to really take into account environmental issues, it is proposed to conceptualize a « sober enterprise ». A reflection on sobriety, an emerging legal concept, is carried out on the basis of the terminology already present in the legislation. The juridical definition of sobriety and more precisely, what constitutes sober behaviour, must make it possible to provide support for the integration of the environment into the enterprise. Or for the judge, to characterize the legal standard of sober behaviour. Instruments for characterizing sober behaviour are considered through a review of the elements of the commercial company contract (associate, contribution, profit, social purpose and social interest). These developments are raised in a dynamic of change of the the commercial company and should highlight the need to define the enterprise : both on its social function and to reach to satisfy common interests.

Towards an operational measurement of socio-ecological performanceKettner, Claudia, Köppl, Angela, Stagl, Sigrid 02 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Questioning GDP as dominant indicator for economic performance has become commonplace. For economists economic policy always aims for a broader array of goals (like income, employment, price stability, trade balance) alongside income, with income being the priority objective. The Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi Commission argued for extending and adapting key variables of macroeconomic analysis.
International organisations such as the EC, OECD, Eurostat and UN have proposed extended arrays of macroeconomic indicators (see 'Beyond GDP', 'Compendium of wellbeing indicators', 'GDP and Beyond', 'Green Economy', 'Green Growth', 'Measuring Progress of Societies'). Despite these high profile efforts, few wellbeing and environmental variables are in use in macroeconomic models. The reasons for the low uptake of socio-ecological indicators in macroeconomic models range from path dependencies in modelling, technical limitations, indicator lists being long and unworkable, choices of indicators appearing ad hoc and poor data availability. In this paper we review key approaches and identify a limited list of candidate variables and - as much as possible - offer data sources. / Series: WWWforEurope

Facing the necessity for changes in the environmental and social crisis scenario that we live today, arises the agro ecology as a field of knowledge able to indicate sustainable alternatives replacing the predatory practices of the capitalist agriculture. At the environmental view, the adoption of these sustainable practices would enable the maintenance of natural resources and the agricultural productivity during a big period, generating less adverse impacts to the environment and improving the production with minimal possible external inputs. However, the sustainable rural development is not reached only with the adoption of alternative practices of cultivation in the field. It is more an ideal, as the social justice, and in the other hand, a project from the society which must be built technically, socially and politically. Many family farmers from Brejo area in the Paraíba state have adopted alternative practices of agriculture management, especially in Lagoa Seca city. Despite recent in the adoption of an alternative model of agriculture, these small producers declare to follow the agro ecological principles, gaining new fans to the process of agriculture transition in this region. This study aims to identify the adopted practices by family farmers in Lagoa Seca city, highlighting the local experiences,
experienced, and their social economic and environmental viability to the region, considering the agro ecology principles as a guide mechanism and determinant for such analysis. To achieve the required data by this research, it has been evaluated 20 agro
ecological properties located at Lagoa Seca city, Paraíba state, distributed in the following
regions: Oiti, Cumbe, Floriano and Alvinho. This research is qualitative and had the case
study performed through a base questionnaire, observation in loco (walk around the establishment) and application of semi-structured interview. The adopted practices by agro ecological farmers from Lagoa Seca have provided the conservation of soil, water and the local biota ensuring long-term maintenance of these natural resources to current and future generations. The changes in the institutional political scenario have brought uncountable social and economic benefits to the agro ecological communities; besides strengthen the process of agro ecological transition through the cooperation and dedication among the involved characters. It has been verified also some negative points like the deficiency in the sewage system and water treatment for animal and human consumption which may pledge the agro ecological product image in the various
marketing channels, as well as the farmers’ health and their family. The agro ecological practices of social economic and environmental features have provided considerably the improvement of the life quality of the family farmers from Lagoa Seca city, Paraíba state, showing the importance of agro ecology as an indispensable tool to reach the sustainable rural development.

Previous issue date: 2011-09-19 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / From the dialogue established between the bio-ecological perspective of
development and the Socio-Historical Psychology, the main purpose of this study is to
understand the multiple meanings assigned to the process of ecological transition that
corresponds to the quitting of the adolescents who have experienced living in shelters.
Linking this issue to the future prospects of these adolescents, it was proposed to listen to
the speech of this youth who experienced this process as well as to the professionals who
worked with them. We chose to carry out a qualitative research in a host institution of the
city of Manaus. With reference to the theory of Urie Bronfenbrenner method of anchoring
the Ecological Integration, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five subjects,
including adolescents and members of staff of that institution, as well as participant
observation. Through the method of organizing data for Meaning Core, we obtained the
following results: the process of leaving the shelter contradictory meanings being viewed
both positively and negatively. However there is a predominance of negative meanings,
suggesting the lack of effectiveness of the actions that should be favored by the institution in
the promotion of life projects for young people. The reports revealed that the institution does
not promote the ecological transition by providing resources for adolescents coping with
adverse situations, although some positive experiences can be reported. We conclude that
institutional practices need to be reformulated achieving greater interconnection between the
ecological systems that must integrate the development of these young people / Partindo de diálogos estabelecidos entre a perspectiva Bioecológica do
As
integrar o desenvolvimento destes jovens

Ecologie territoriale et trajectoires de transitions : le cas du Rhône-Médian / Territorial Ecology and trajectories of transitions : the Rhône-Médian case-studyHerbelin, Alice 21 December 2018 (has links)
Territorial ecology is a research field which proposes to analyse the functioning of a territory under the perspective of the flows of matter and energy which passes by and characterize it. This analysis is particularly led through the concept of territorial metabolism. Through this lens, flows are considered in their material dimension but also under the light of the actor systems and of the political and socio-economic issues which influence them. Thus, territorial ecology tends to underline socio-ecological transition levers on the scale of territories. This thesis proposes to test these concepts through a field study in the mid Rhône valley. Looking back to the end of the 18th century, the research firstly underlines how a socio-ecological regime is progressively set around the industry sector and the heavy infrastructures at the scale of the territory. Then, the thesis describes how this regime gets materialized into today’s metabolism through the analysis of four different kinds of flows (energy, water, toxic elements, food). This metabolism is described as intensive and toxic – according to the level of intensity and toxicity of the flows at stake – as well as absorbing – in the way it deals with other territories’ metabolic functions (waste management, food production). These properties of the Rhône-Médian’s metabolism implicate limited capacity for local actors (inhabitants, public actors, farmers) to act towards the reduction or the transformation of these flows. However, within a context of change in production systems and of residentialisation, several local initiatives emerge. Through this process, local actors gain a better understanding and better capabilities to act on the flows of energy and matter in order to engage with sustainable territorial development. These local initiatives lead to several forms of reassessment of existing power relationships but the industrial socio-ecological regime remains, partly because some lock-ins which structure and self-sustain this regime are not questioned.

Beta diversity can be defined as the shift in species composition among sites in a geographical area of interest. Quantifying the relative contributions of different processes that affect beta diversity is essential for understanding how diversity is maintained in communities. Our study focuses on the woody vegetation of the Alto Camaquã region, southernmost Brazil (c. 30-31° S, 52-54° W), which is within the domain of the Pampa biome and presents wide environmental heterogeneity showing natural forest-grassland patches. Aiming to answer which factors are most influential in the structuring of the woody plant communities, we systematically placed 60 sampling plots throughout the study area for vegetation survey. We partitioned beta diversity through partial RDA and verified that the environmental variables - which include climatic, topographic and edaphic variables - explained 28.4% of the variation in species composition, geographic distance accounted for 16.6%, 14.7% was shared between the two components and 40.3% of the variation remained unexplained. The deterministic processes are clearly the most important in structuring the woody communities. Further analysis using multivariate regression tree selected the climatic variables as the most influential. The study region shows a well conserved physiognomy, regardless of its 300-years history of land use for family cattleraising; hence in a second moment we investigated additional factors affecting diversity patterns of the plant communities surveyed, starting from available agroecological zoning data for land management. We explored the effect of the different typologies of family cattle-raising over two strata of the woody vegetation community, seedling and adult plants, controlling the effect of climate heterogeneity using matrix correlations (partial Mantel tests). We found that land management is not correlated with the species turnover of seedlings, yet explains 12% of the variation in the adult plants beta diversity. We concluded, hence, that climatic heterogeneity creates habitat heterogeneity, being the main determinant of community diversity, although neutral processes are also influent. Land management does not affect the woody plant community evenly, thus contributing to the floristic heterogeneity of the region.
