Previous issue date: 2011-02-09 / This Mastership Dissertation presents analysis of the narrative point of view in the short-stories "The fall of the House of Usher", "The Tell-Tale Heart", and "Berenice", by Edgar Allan Poe, with basis on theories by Norman Friedman, which is approached by Ligia Chiappini Moraes Leite (2002), and Wayne C. Booth, about the unreliable narrator Some theoretical considerations approached by Poe, in the "Philosophy of the composition" (1846) and in other essays translated by Baudelaire (2003), are also utilized. Considerations by Todorov (2004), Freud (1919), Jung (1961) apud Philippov (1999), and Castex (1951) apud Philippov (1999), about fantastic theories are also approached. It is verified that all the analyzed works are narrated in first person. It means that the narrator is always a participating character of the story. It was possible to evidence that there is, in all of them, a contradiction between what the narrator proposes himself to do and that which is permitted by the situation he is inserted in. The trials in helping a friend, who lives in a full of melancholy house, to alleviate a nervous agitation are all vain, since it is the mansion‟s owner who ushers the narrator to execute his habitual activities. In the second short-story, the character who does not accept to be called mad and wants to show all the calm, precaution and perfection he had when he killed the old man he used to look after, suffers from an acuteness of the sense of hearing, which makes him hear the beats of the murdered man‟s heart. This sound shows the limits between the narrator's calm and fury, until the moment in which he, believing that the policemen could hear the same thing he could, and would be making a mockery of him, confesses the crime. Finally, the narrator Egaeus is conscious that he always had a bad health and recognizes that his reality of life is different from the one of other characters around him. In spite of saying that he does not seek to convince, Egaeus makes long explanations about the features of his illness and tries to avoid technical language, so that the common reader is able to comprehend him. He hopes that the revelation of his consciousness of the crime, and of the consequent family dishonor could assuage his guilt.

Previous issue date: 2018-02-23 / This research points to the multiple character of Baudelaire's eyes, multiple because he
did not consolidate himself only in the lyrical genre, he focused on the tale, the novel,
the music, the Plastic Arts, in short, on everything that is touching on art, regardless of
the genus. Baudelaire perceived the condition sign wich walks in the interior of the
artistic work and began, in the middle of the nineteenth century, an intense critical
work. From this critical work translations of the work of Edgar Allan Poe came out and
special attention was given to the tale The Man of the Crowd in the Essay The Painter of
modern Life. In this essay Baudelaire traces the work of a painter, Monsieur G. (Mr.G),
now known by critics, Constantin Guys. In addition to Constantin Guys, two other
painters are placed on a par with Constantin Guys and are part of the second chapter
because of the transgressive character of their works, transgressor in the sense of not
following models so that the production of a work without a soul takes place. The works
of art will be approached with the concept of artistic text wich Iuri Lotman (1978)
conceptualizes in the book The structure of the artistic text and from the perspective of
Julia Kristeva (2012) in the book Introdução à semanálise. Starting from this concept of
text as a sign structure, semiotics will be used as a way of reading the object. One of the
conclusions of the research was the multiplicity of paths left by these writers and
painters, free ways for art to free itself from the bonds of a fixed way of composing. Art
began to act on its own, to weave itself into the accompanying theory, and artists began
to produce critical works by internalizing the need to be aware of their creative process.
Partindo
criativo.

The Un-American American: Edgar Allan Poe and the Problem of National GenreSchneider, Star 01 January 2017 (has links)
This thesis seeks to account for Edgar Allan Poe's reception as an "American" author. Historically, it took time for Poe to become recognized as an American author rather than as an author who happened to also be American. This thesis argues that one major reason for this problem is that the American influences of his work are largely coded, but that Poe nevertheless was writing for an American audience and that his work did develop in response to national influences.

Edgar Allan Poe's Journey and Abyss Motifs: Order vs. DisorderRaffety, Duane N. 05 1900 (has links)
The key to an understanding of what Poe attempted to accomplish with his art lies in his depictions of order and disorder in the universe. Poe's explorations of order and disorder revolve around journey and abyss motifs exemplified in his imaginative approaches toward nature, conscience, art, intuition, and apocalypse. These imaginative approaches serve to unify Poe's- work as a whole and emphasize his importance as a questing artist who not only sought to define the shape of reality in terms of stability and chaos but also sought to formulate a final metaphysical ordering of chaos and finitude.

A Par/ergon For Poe: Arthur Rackham And The Fin De Siècle IllustratorsSlayton, Jessica M. 01 January 2018 (has links)
This project began in Dr. Anthony Magistrale’s graduate seminar focused on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. It is the result of our common interests in Poe’s textual canon, and furthermore in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century illustrative works that were inspired by it. After performing significant research, the conclusion was reached that despite the extensive collection of visual works, catalogued by Burton Pollin, little work had been done that actually explored the relationship between these works and the text. I found myself asking what role this canon of illustrations played in shaping the public understanding of and reception towards the Poe tales that are so widely known today.
“A Par/ergon for Poe: Arthur Rackham and the Fin de Siècle Illustrators” is intended as an introduction for further study on the extent of influence that nineteenth- and twentieth- century artists had in promoting and supplementing Poe’s work. Given that the earliest prominent illustrator of the canon, Édouard Manet, began illustrating “The Raven” at the request of Charles Baudelaire, Poe’s first translator and the man who communicated Poe’s work to the world, the fin de siècle illustrations were produced concurrently to Poe’s burgeoning popularity. In the first chapter, I engage in a literary history of the fin de siècle artistic movements and major figures and their exposure to Poe, including Manet, Gustave Dore, and the Symbolists, Aubrey Beardsley, Harry Clarke, and the Decadents, and finally, Arthur Rackham and the Modernists. I track Poe’s influence after his death, exploring the question of why such prominent artists were interested in representing Poe’s work, specifically, in the first place. Subsequently, this thesis also discovers what elements of their work and aesthetics could be seen as representative of Poe’s. Then, using Jacques Derrida’s ekphrastic theory of the parergon/ergon supplementary relationship, I deconstruct the textual “lack” in Poe’s tales as that which sets up an availability to the illustration. Through this “lack,” the supplemental illustration can insert itself and exert its own power, altering the way the text is received based on the style and time of its reception.
My second chapter turns to Poe’s tales and the subsequent illustrations by Rackham. I place particular emphasis on texts and images of “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” with supplementary references to “Hop-Frog,” “Ligeia,” “The Domain of Arnheim,” and “Landor’s Cottage.” I use textual analysis and visual case studies to demonstrate the way in which the illustrations fill the “lack” present in their respective texts, and build out precisely where this lack can be seen. I explore the way the images both mimic and change the reader’s relationship with the tales and characters, altering the reader’s response and thus, the overarching canonical interpretation. By doing this, my project demonstrates how strong of an impact Arthur Rackham and the fin de siècle illustrators made on the public perception of and reception to the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.

An Examination of the Solo and Duet Vocal Repertoire of Kenneth MahyThomas, Eric Sanders 06 May 2008 (has links)
This doctoral essay examines the vocal solo and duet repertoire of Kenneth Mahy, an American composer of art song and choral music in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. By examining his songs, assessing their difficulty, and analyzing their texts, this essay establishes that Kenneth Mahy is a composer worthy of note. In addition, this study provides pedagogical observations and performance notes of his songs. Furthermore, this essay provides biographical information about Mahy, and examines how his training, education, military experience, and unique experiences as the son of missionaries in China and the Philippines, among other influences, have affected and shaped his compositions. Resources include source material gathered from Mahy's personal archives, manuscripts and scores, and personal interviews with Mahy. This information provides comprehensive insight into a unique and deserving composer of modern American art song.

Poe's Gothic Protagonist : Isolation and melancholy in four of Poe's worksWrangö, Johan January 2008 (has links)
This paper will argue that there are similarities between “The Raven”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “Ligeia” and “Berenice” in their treatment of the common motifs of isolation and melancholy, and, furthermore, that their protagonists are similar due to their relation to these two motifs. The paper will also argue that the usage of the motif of isolation is a strategic way for the author to emphasise the Gothic horror. In order to support my argument, I will, firstly, provide an outline of how melancholy, isolation and the Gothic were understood in the nineteenth century. Secondly, I will demonstrate ways in which the works are similar. By comparing the characters’ personalities and behaviour to each other, I will illustrate how melancholy and isolation are represented in similar ways in the works of this study. Thirdly, I will show how the motif of isolation reinforces the Gothic.

Midnight drearies : three moods on Edgar Allan PoeDavis, Andrew Delamater 03 June 2013 (has links)
Edgar Allan Poe has long been considered one of the great writers in Gothic literature. His works, as he himself suggested in his essay “The Philosophy of Composition,” are intended to strike a unique balance between mainstream appeal and higher literary craft. In many ways, my goals as a composer are similar, not just in mitigating this often tenuous dynamic, but also in tapping into powerful emotional states. Poe is a master at creating moods, for instantly drawing the reader into his dynamic worlds. Many of his works spend a significant amount of time, sometimes paragraph upon paragraph as in the opening to The Fall of the House of Usher, simply detailing his specific vision of the story’s tenor. In this piece, I was interested in musically depicting the imagery, which Poe so eloquently writes. I have chosen three of Poe’s short stories: The Black Cat, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Fall of the House of Usher. In each movement, I deliberately avoid any programmatic connection to the story, that is to say specific events in the music do not coincide with any actual depiction of an event within the intended story. Rather this piece examines and details the specific tone of each story. Midnight Drearies: Three Moods on Edgar Allan Poe was written for Dan Welcher and the University of Texas New Music Ensemble. / text

En berättarteknisk studie av "Ligeia", "The Tell-Tale Heart" samt "The Fall of the House of Usher".
