Learning to LoveDeagman, Rachael January 2010 (has links)
<p>This study examines medieval edification in all of its rich senses: moral improvement, the building up of community, and the construction of a city or edifice. Drawing from medieval literature, religious writing and architectural sources, my dissertation investigates virtue formation and explores what kinds of communities nourish or hinder those virtues. The Christian virtue of love stands at the center of my project. Drawing from the work of Alasdair MacIntyre, I show that medieval Christians learn the craft of love in a lifelong process into which they are initiated as apprentices to those who teach the craft in the Church. For parishioners in late medieval England, apprenticeship in the craft of love entails participation in sacramental practice, particularly in the sacrament of penance.</p>
<p>Chapter one considers Jacob's Well , a fifteenth-century penitential manual written by an anonymous author that uses architectural allegory to describes the penitential process. I argue that the author, a self-proclaimed "man of craft," apprentices the reader into sacramental practice. The author is both an exemplar to the reader and apprenticed to Christ. In chapter two, I explore the role of the narrative exempla in Jacob's Well. The exempla often resist the paradigm set forth in the allegory of the well. My chapter shows that learning to read these stories trains the reader to recognize forgiveness and sin in others and then to use this recognition to evaluate one's own story. Chapter three considers William Langland's richly complex fourteenth-century poem, Piers Plowman. The horrible failures of the sacrament of penance in this poem cause the Church to crumble. The allegorical Wille is left within this Church with the enjoinder to "learn the craft of love." For Wille to learn the craft of love means more than learning to forgive and to be forgiven - it means learning to be charitable. For Langland, a charitable Church is yet to be practiced, yet to be constructed. My last chapter examines Pearl, a late fourteenth-century apocalyptic allegory written by an anonymous poet. The poem opens with a jeweler lamenting the loss of his pearl in a garden. As the poem progresses it becomes clear that the jeweler is a father who mourns the death of his infant daughter. In a dream vision, his daughter appears to him as a Pearl Maiden, one of the 144,000 virgins from the Book of Revelations. In an inversion of the usual parent-child relationship, the Pearl Maiden teaches the jeweler to recognize that their interlocking narratives stem from the same Christian tradition, although his particular narrative is one of penitential practice and hers is one of grace. The Pearl poet's architectural allegory focuses on the completed City of New Jerusalem rather than on the upbuilding or crumbling of the Church.</p> / Dissertation

Morale, religion et exemplarité dans la littérature fantastique espagnole (1830-1890) : Poétique d’un genre non canonique / Morality, religion and exemplarity in Spanish fantastic literature (1830-1890) : Poetics of a non-canonical genrePédeflous, Justine 24 October 2015 (has links)
Almost unknown in France, Spanish fantastic literature is frequently considered as nonexistent or minor, in comparison with other traditions from Europe or Latin America. A strong presence of moral and religious thematics in the nineteenth century can contribute to explain the fact that she is placed out of the fantastic canon. First, the relationship between Spanish fantastic and morality and religion must be considered through a study of the socio-cultural context, which seems reluctant to the development of the genre. In a second time, we will concentrate on the different manifestations of the hispanization of the genre: the reception of foreign texts, and the national production, as the legend, will be studied in order to show how the fantastic changes in Spain, in particular how it becomes more moral. A comparative perspective will permit to understand the complex phenomenon of hybridization, characteristic of the corpus between 1830 and 1890. Finally, the consequences of cohabitation of fantastic and exemplar poetics will be analyzed. The study of edifying strategies and of illustrations will be completed by psychoanalytical theory in a search of sense, beyond the conscious mechanisms of exemplarity.

According to this study, research indicates that there is not a lot of information surrounding the focus on prayer in church polity and therefore attention is lacking in this field during the training of office bearers and thus the content and composition of prayers leaves one untouched.
The focus of this study is a theoretical approach to the place and content of prayer in church polity according to the practical ministry of prayer during three consecutive synods of the Reformed Churches in South Africa.
The content of chapter one focuses on the idea that both Scripture and theological literature offer material to be integrated into a synthesis of what the ius constituendum imply and where to the practise as ius constitutum is measured with the purpose on an increased focus on prayer in church polity.
Chapter two elaborates on the different aspects of prayer in conjunction with church polity in which the communal prayer of church leaders imposes certain requirements to the prayer leader in connection with the use of language, content and agenda that is embedded on the confession that Christ is the Head of and reigns over his Church.
In the third chapter the focus is fixed on the four core elements of the church: unity, holiness, catholicity, apostolicity and the implication it has on prayer in the reformed church polity regarding more explicit intercession in prayer.
The fourth chapter is an empirical examination of 121 prayers that was recorded during the 2003, 2006 and 2009 synods of the GKSA in accordance to the ius constituendum as discussed in chapters two and three summarised under twenty headings.
The final chapter suggests corrections based on hermeneutical interaction between the ius constituendum and ius constitutum and resulting in improved formulated prayers that focus on the affairs of the agenda. Prayer ministry should not be left to the improvisation of the moment, but detail preparation should be done. Errors which were pointed out in this study, should thus be prevented.
In church government, prayers should reflect the agenda in all prayer elements focusing on the kingdom of God from within the church with an outward spiral to the whole cosmos. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Church Polity))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011

Komparace zábavně poučných týdeníků pro mládež Mladý hlasatel a Vpřed (30.-50.léta 20.století) / Comparison of popular didactic weekly magazine for youth (Mladý hlasatel thirties/forties Vpřed forties/fifties)Meravá, Tereza January 2011 (has links)
Master's thesis "Comparison of popularly educational weekly youth magazines Mladý Hlasatel and Vpřed in 1930s through 1950s" contrasts two youth titles that were published around the WWII. Both titles, connected not only through the editor and father-like figure Jaroslav Foglar, were immensely popular in their time and constitute the phenomenon of journalism for children of that era. Both magazines were published during uneasy times, firstly during the dawn of the war and during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; secondly, after ten years, during the rise of communists' influence and subsequent Communist coup d'état in 1948. This master's thesis follows my bachelor thesis "Mladý Hlasatel and it's authors" describing history, authors and specifics of this magazine. Master's thesis adds comparably detailed information about the magazine Vpřed, but its main objective is to compare the titles published in "free" era before the WWII and after it, and the ones that were published during the limited freedom of the press during the war and after the year 1948. This work seeks not only to compare the content, authors and information in both magazines, but also to comprehend the contemporary context of that era, observe the impact of ideological and political influences, as well as describe different...

Previous issue date: 2017-12-05 / Environmental impacts, which alter the environment and result in the quality of life and well-being of society, can have their causes in the constructive process of buildings. This work presents the results of a research that had as objective to analyze the significance of the environmental impacts resulting from the construction process of three building works. Initially, it was necessary to know the causes of the environmental impacts in the different stages of the constructive process of buildings, as well as to identify these impacts, in order to evaluate their significance, through the criteria used in the method of Seiffert (2011). According to the said method, this significance can be: despicable, moderate and critical. The results showed that 83.78% of the identified environmental impacts represent moderate to critical significance, which is a worrying situation. This demonstrates that the environment is being polluted considerably by the construction industry due to the lack of environmental management and the wrong working method of the companies. The neglect of these companies in the face of environmental issues is notorious, since there is no control in the causes of environmental impacts, that is, there are no actions aimed at eliminating or minimizing them, thereby compromising the quality of life of society.

Edificando comunidades: a educação musical a serviço do reino de DeusErnâni Luís Gauger 15 March 2011 (has links)
This work studies the Musical Education of children and young people as part of
integration and engagement of them in community life and also as promoter of
community edification. It is characterized as a study case from a qualitative
descriptive study. From the reality of a communitarian Music Education, interviews
were conducted with people involved in the project, in other words, some students,
the teacher, the workers, presbyters and students relatives. The data collected were
analyzed in order to identify the contributions to Musical Education in the community
edification. To support and document the analysis the theoretical background was
inquired, through bibliographic research, referring to the works of some theorists in
the Education and Theology areas. The first chapter talks about the presence of
Music in the Bible and makes a brief recovery of the historicity of Musical Education
in the world, in Brazil, in the Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession in Brazil, in
the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul state and in the community where the
project was carried out. The second chapter presents some concepts of the
expression: edify communities and then proceeds to analyze the results of the field
research, comparing the statements of the interviewers with the consulted
bibliography. The third chapter reveals some practical conclusions for the work of
Music Education, because of its musical, personal and communitarian dimension.
Finally, some actions for the organization and implementation of Music Education
projects in IECLB communities and other religious denominations are suggested.
