Stoicism, Moral Education and Material Goods

Burns, David 06 1900 (has links)
Material goods play an important role in ethical life and moral education. Judging which goods are preferable to which − and which are therefore worth pursuing over which − is an ethically crucial process. The currently dominant paradigms of moral education (virtue education, cognitive developmentalism and care theory) do not satisfactorily contribute to this important topic. I argue that the resultant lacuna may be resolved by attending to the insight of the classical Stoics and their modern day neo-Stoic interpreters. Stoicism, I argue, provides a unique set of philosophical resources that fosters critical deliberation and reflection regarding the attribution of value to material goods. I begin this study by detailing the extant lacuna via discussion of virtue education, cognitive developmentalism and care theory as they relate to material good education. Once the lacuna’s existence is established I move on to introduce Stoic philosophy (both classical and contemporary). From this philosophy I construct a moral educational framework. This framework is then applied to two topics related to the material good lacuna: consumer education and environmental education. I conclude that, while Stoicism must be softened and revised for a modern pedagogical audience, its core philosophy has much to offer moral educationalists. / Theoretical, Cultural, and International Studies in Education

Safety Education for Future Mining

Jonsson, Hanna January 2019 (has links)
The work environment in mines have changed during the last decades. Compared to when birds were used to examine the air quality in coal mines, today’s mines strive for a zero-entry production. Which means that the persons who works at the mining company are stationed over ground - instead of under it. With digitalization and automation, companies like Boliden aim to increase a safer work environment. However, zero-entry mines are still in the future, and until future notice, existing risks and hazards need to be managed. This master thesis at Luleå University of Technology in collaboration with the Crusher and Ore Handling System (G55) department at Boliden Aitik. This master thesis aims to improve work conditions and contribute to a safer work environment by increasing awareness and knowledge regarding risks and routines at the G55 department. To accomplish this, I have during this master thesis developed an educational tool as a supplement to the current safety educations provided by SSG. This master thesis focus on providing workers with information with safety educations and motivates by lack of knowledge as a cause of accidents. Through visits, interviews and observations have been conducted to map current and future state at the G55 department and within Boliden as a company. In total ten interviews have been performed as well as several feedback occasions. Trough feedback, adjustments have been done which are beneficial in the iterative working process due its ability to go back and adjust. The current state mapping has been compared to theories in which a theoretical framework has been used as a foundation when– analyzing the current state and developing the material. Included topics in the literature gather are “Health and Safety” and “Understand and Develop training material”. These have been the foundation when discussing improvement areas and when taking decisions when I developed the education material. Since the education material is a supplement to already existing safety educations provided by SSG, training methods have been investigated. The resulting education material delivered to the G55 department resulted in a lecture based presentation material in the software PowerPoint, as well as a pamphlet with summarized information from the lecture material. The lecture training method was chosen due to its advantage of containing personal contact between new workers and existing staff. This makes the introduction material complement current safety education which are performed as a data-based training method and misses personal contact. Delivered material contains information that is consider important for new workers to know before starting their employment. Further recommendations when implementing this material are to translate it to English to reach non-Swedish-speaking persons entering the department as well as keep developing the material. The discussion question if additional educations are the most efficient way to manage and correct risks depending on the classifications of existing risks. But concludes that it is an easily tool for short-term control. According to me, the mapping of the organization should be used to eliminate or separate current risks and hazards for a sustainable solution long-term. Today, I believe that an education supplement is necessary. And hopefully, the G55 department will keep develop their organization, eliminate current risks and long-term achieve a zero-accident vision.

Ernst, Meret 29 June 2022 (has links)

A Newborn Screening Disorders Online Portal for Primary Care Providers and Parents

Whittemore, Jean Becky 01 January 2019 (has links)
Parents do not always receive accurate, timely and comprehensive information regarding a positive newborn screening from their infants’ primary care providers. The dissertation outlines the investigation of this problem. The methodology of the study is discussed including the survey of parents and primary care providers using the past system, the development of a web portal with a focus on plain language and action focused handouts. Without a simple to understand parent handout the newborn screening process is more stressful to families. Review of the literature is detailed including newborn screening, patient education, health literacy, Internet usage, online health education, design of patient education websites and the evaluative process of learning tools. Surveys informed the content of the web-based patient portal for both parents and PCP. Abbreviated parental stress scores did not identify elevated stress in parents during the initial PCP visit when the NBS results and plan of care were discussed. Evaluation of the planned web portal was permanently delayed related to change in statewide policies; thus, a standalone website was developed using Agency for Health Care Research and Quality’s patient education material tool for understandability and actionability of both patient handouts and web portals. Physician actionable NBS handouts were also developed. Formative evaluation using experts’ input, one-to-one trials and small group trials of the handouts for the site were completed with minor revisions made to the portal. The formative evaluation using the simple survey tool would have provided any additional portal changes required. Strengths of the study to include survey response rates, rigor of the comments by both parents and PCPs as well as constructive feedback from NBS experts are highlighted. The weakness is the lack of having a final participant group identified or available related to local NBS policies. Recommendations for future research are highlighted as well as discussion of changes in federal policy that will now allow further NBS research without the limitations once imposed.

Gembert, Linnéa, Sipinen, Linnéa January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the material Praktisk matematik 1 is suitable for use in mathematics teaching in years 1–3 based on the working method concrete to abstract with a focus on the connection to the mathematical abilities and the central content in mathematics from Skolverkets (2019) curriculum. This study analyses which five mathematical abilities students are given an opportunity to practice, through which central content students are given the opportunity to practice these five mathematical abilities and in what way the material is designed for working from concrete to abstract.   This study contains a qualitative content analysis of the material Praktisk matematik 1. To analyse the material, criteria were created based of the mathematical abilities and the central content from the Swedish curriculum (Skolverket 2019). The material’s design for working from concrete to abstract was analysed from this study’s theory.   The results show that students are given the opportunity to practice all five mathematical abilities to a verifying degree through working with the material Praktisk matematik 1. Through the areas number perception and number’s use, geometry and problem-solving students are given the opportunity to practice all five mathematical abilities. Through the areas algebra and probability and statistics are students given the opportunity to practice the ability to comprehend mathematical terms, numeracy, and the ability to solve problems. Through the area connections and change student are given the opportunity to practice their ability to comprehend mathematical terms, numeracy, the ability to solve problems and reasoning ability. These abilities are given a varied opportunity to practice through the different points the areas include. The material is designed to work from concrete to abstract because every card calls on using concrete material. The usage of concrete material is in about half of the cards followed by an abstract calculation.
