A fast approach to unknown tag identification in large scale RFID systems

No / Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been widely applied in many scenarios such as inventory control, supply chain management due to its superior properties including fast identification and relatively long interrogating range over barcode systems. It is critical to efficiently identify the unknown tags because these tags can appear when new tagged objects are moved in or wrongly placed. The state-of-the-art Basic Unknown tag Identification Protocol-with Collision-Fresh slot paring (BUIP-CF) protocol can first deactivate all the known tags and then collect all the unknown tags. However, BUIP-CF protocol investigates an ALOHA-like technique and causes too many tag responses, which results in low efficiency. This paper proposes a Fast Unknown tag Identification (FUI) protocol which investigates an indicator vector to label the unknown tags with a given accuracy and removes the time-consuming tag responses in the deactivation phase. FUI also adopts the classical Enhanced Dynamic Framed Slotted ALOHA (EDFSA) protocol to collect the labeled unknown tags. We then investigate the optimal parameter settings to maximize the performance of the proposed FUI protocol. Extensive simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed FUI protocol and the experimental results show that it considerably outperforms the state-of-the-art protocol.

Fast presenter tracking for 4K lecture videos using computationally inexpensive algorithms

Lecture recording has become an essential tool for educational institutions to enhance the student learning experience and offer online courses for remote learning programs. Highresolution 4K cameras have gained popularity in these systems due to their affordability and clarity of written content on boards/screens. Unfortunately, at 4K resolution, a typical 45- minute lecture video easily exceeds 2GB. Many video files of this size place a financial burden on institutions and students, especially in developing countries where financial resources are limited. Institutions require costly high-end equipment to capture, store and distribute this ever-increasing collection of videos. Students require a fast internet connection with a large data quota for off-campus viewing, which can be too expensive for many, especially if they use mobile data. This project designs and implements a low-cost presenter and writing detection front-end that can integrate with an external Virtual Cinematographer (VC). Gesture detection was also explored; however, the frame differencing approach used for presenter detection was not sufficiently robust for gesture detection. Our front-end is carefully designed to run on commodity computers without requiring expensive Graphics Processing Units (GPU) or servers. An external VC can use our contextual information to segment a smaller cropping window from the 4K frame, only containing the presenter and relevant boards, drastically reducing the file size of the resultant videos while preserving writing clarity. The software developed as part of this project will be available as open source. Our results show that the front-end module is fit for purpose and sufficiently robust across several challenging lecture venue types. On average, a 2-minute video clip is processed by the front-end in under 60 seconds (or approximately half of the input video duration). The majority (89%) of this time is used for reading and decoding frames from storage. Additionally, our low-cost presenter detection achieves an overall F1-Score of 0.76, while our writing detection achieves an overall F1-Score of 0.55. We also demonstrate a mean reduction of 81.3% in file size from the original 4K video to a cropped 720p video when using our front-end in a full pipeline with an external VC.

Stakeholder involvement in the management of public technical training institutions in Kenya

The phenomena of stakeholder identification and involvement in the affairs of public entities has become of great importance in the recent years. Literature review reveals the extent of knowledge and discloses gaps that exist in the management of technical training institutions in Kenya. Therefore, key research questions aimed at achieving the objectives of this study were formulated. For empirical responses, a sample comprising three institutions was chosen, where respondents were selected purposively. Focus group and individual interviews were conducted for qualitative data collection from purposively selected respondents. The data analysis led to the conclusion that stakeholders are varied and their involvement in specific issues minimal. This implies lack of clarity of knowledge of the stakeholders and variation regarding the extent to which they need involvement and the effects. One recommendation is to carry out an analysis to establish legitimate stakeholders and their specific potential influences. / Educational Studies

This thesis deals with the possibilities of education of elderly citizens in the Czech Republic. It compromises of a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part of the thesis the characteristics of gerontopedagogy and gerontodidactics were determined, and further the possibilities of education of seniors were outlined. The research in the empirical part of this thesis regards the adequateness of the offers of educational institutions for the elderly. The aim of the research is to determine whether the offer of the institutions in selected Prague districts, which currently provide learning opportunities for elderly, is sufficient for the purposes of their needs and interests. The ultimate research question is: What is the opinion of the respondents on the range of offers of the educational institutions? Further sub-questions were asked, regarding the number of educational institutions, the variety of activities offered, the lack of educational activities, promotion of the activities, the cooperation of the educational institutions with the social welfare department and with feedback from the elderly. Trata-se de uma pesquisa histórica que busca compreender e analisar o processo de criação do Centro Interescolar de Segundo Grau Dr. João Bacelar Portela e a sua relação com as dimensões social, política, econômica e educacional do Maranhão na década de 1970. Também visa compreender a expansão e a transformação em Escola Técnica Estadual do Maranhão; a extinção dos seus cursos profissionalizantes em 1997; as trajetórias educacionais e os destinos ocupacionais dos discentes da turma de Metalurgia do ano de 1987. As fontes oficiais oriundas dos órgãos governamentais, os documentos produzidos na institucionalidade da escola, os jornais, as fontes imagéticas e orais foram privilegiados nesse estudo. A análise das fontes foi realizada mediante as contribuições teóricas e metodológicas da História Cultural dando relevo aos estudos de Michel de Certeau (2014; 2015) Justino Magalhães (2004), Diana Vidal (2005), Viñao Frago e Augustín Escolano (2011), Bosi (1994), Halbwachs (2003). Conclui-se que a criação do Centro Interescolar de Segundo Grau Dr. João Bacelar Portela correspondeu à reforma educacional de 1971 e às estratégias do Ministério da Educação e do Banco Mundial com o intuito de ajustar a educação maranhense ao modelo econômico, porém com habilitação básica que não era aceita no mercado de trabalho. A transformação do projeto de escola, a partir de 1984, representou as iniciativas dos agentes educacionais que pressionaram o órgão educacional para viabilizar projeto de escola voltado para a habilitação do técnico para uma ocupação definida. A mudança de projeto resultou também dos investimentos da Secretaria de Educação que conciliou as demandas do mercado de trabalho com o aumento do número de vagas no ensino de segundo grau. As trajetórias dos (as) ex-alunos (as) revelaram que o surto industrial no Maranhão não absorveu parcela significativa dos (as) egressos (as) de Metalurgia e que o destino ocupacional atingido pela maioria se encontra no setor de serviços. / Based on press, documentary, image, bibliographic and oral sources, this work aims to understand and analyze the creation process of Centro Interescolar de Segundo Grau Dr. João Bacelar Portela and its relation with social, politic, economic and educational dimension from Maranhão; it also aims to understand the expansion, the transition from Centro Interescolar to Escola Técnica Estadual do Maranhão and extinction of its professional courses in 1997, besides understanding its educational trajectories and occupational destination of the Metallurgy learners group in 1987. Source analysis was carried out through theoretical and methodological contributions of Cultural History, giving greater emphasis to Michel de Certeau (2004; 2015), Justino Magalhães (2004), Vidal (2005), Frago and Escolano (2011), Bosi (1994) and Halbwachs studies (2003). It is reported that the creation of Centro Interescolar de Segundo Grau Dr. João Bacelar Portela corresponded to the strategies of Ministry of Education and World Bank to adjust Maranhense education to the economic model, however, with basic qualification, which was not accepted in the job market. From 1984 onwards, the transformation of the school project represented the educational agents initiatives which dimensioned institution functionalities based on their objectives and aspirations that the school provides a qualification from technical to a defined occupation. Former students trajectories revealed that the industrial boom in Maranhão didnt take up a significant part of new students of Metallurgy course and that the occupational destination achieved by the majority finds itself in the service sector.

A partir disso, permitiu-se a identificação da eficácia das instituições participantes, facultando-lhes a tomada de decisões e implementação de melhorias, por meio da auto-avaliação e da avaliação comparativa às demais instituições de ensinos participantes da pesquisa. Para a realização da pesquisa, foram necessárias fases distintas. Na fase inicial de revisão bibliográfica, foi identificado um conjunto de indicadores para apoio a gestão, os quais serviram de base para a segunda etapa que correspondeu a um levantamento com dados coletados, referente ao período de 2007 e 2008, e posterior cálculo dos indicadores (a amostra contemplou 23 escolas públicas municipais, 5 pública estaduais, ambas pertencentes às cidades de Porto Alegre e São Leopoldo, e 11 instituições privada / This research aimed to construct a set of performance indicators that were calculated, analyzed an then evaluated by managers of educational institutions, as excellence standards through benchmarking. Colégio de Aplicação da UFRGS : práticas educativas adormecidas entre o Arquivo e a Memória Oral (1954-1981)

Este é um estudo que tematiza memórias relativas a práticas educativas desenvolvidas pelo Colégio de Aplicação (CAp) da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), especialmente considerando como práticas os exames de seleção para ingresso dos estudantes, os testes de inteligência aplicados aos alunos, as classes experimentais secundárias e os conselhos de classe, entre 1954 e 1981. O recorte temporal escolhido está delimitado pela presença de Graciema Pacheco na Direção do Colégio, pois ela concentrou esforços para a manutenção de um tipo de escola em que os alunos eram escolhidos por provas de seleção e testes de inteligência. Inscrita no campo da História da Educação e suas interfaces com a História das Instituições Educativas, a pesquisa está ancorada nos postulados da História Cultural e utiliza como metodologias a História Oral e Análise Documental Histórica. Deste modo, têm-se como corpus documental, narrativas de memória de cinco professoras que atuaram no Colégio no período em questão, bem como outros tantos documentos localizados no Arquivo da Comissão de Ensino do CAp e no Arquivo da Faculdade de Educação/UFRGS. Para melhor compreender o CAp, foi necessário conhecer também a legislação educacional brasileira, bem como as inspirações estrangeiras associadas aos preceitos da Escola Nova. Cumpre destacar que o escolanovismo, baseado no pensamento de teóricos norte-americanos e europeus, esteve no cerne da idealização de um novo conceito de escola, que culminou na instalação dos Colégios de Aplicação brasileiros, a partir da década de 1940. O princípio destes estabelecimentos de ensino era constituírem-se como escolas laboratoriais e como campo de estágio para os alunos dos Cursos de Licenciatura das Faculdades de Filosofia do país. Sob essa égide, em 1954, teve início a primeira turma do CAp/UFRGS. Para as Diretoras, Graciema Pacheco e Isolda Holmer Paes, os estagiários seriam a mola propulsora da inovação e da irradiação de práticas educativas inusitadas a outras escolas, fossem públicas ou particulares. Ao longo da pesquisa, foi possível estabelecer relações entre os modos como o CAp se apropriava de tendências pedagógicas estrangeiras e procurava disseminá-las. Notadamente, os discursos renovadores franceses fizeram emergir no contexto do Colégio de Aplicação um determinado ideal de escola modelo para a sociedade porto-alegrense naquele período. As práticas desenvolvidas evidenciam a circularidade cultural que agregava educadores franceses e brasileiros, que partilhavam intercâmbios de estudo. Estas aproximações permitiram que o Colégio promovesse uma vanguarda pedagógica que se traduziu em ações escolares, até então, pouco difundidas, entre elas as Classes Experimentais e os Conselhos de Classe. Este estudo pretendeu contribuir na produção do conhecimento em História da Educação, de forma a dar visibilidade a experiências pedagógicas, que corporificaram um modo de pensar o fazer educacional. Além disso, buscou-se compreender a instituição de ensino e sua cultura escolar, da qual, em boa parte, somos herdeiros. / That is a study which thematizes relative memories to eductacional practices developed in Colégio de Aplicação (CAp) from Universadade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), specially considering as practice the selection exam to admission students, the intelligence tests applied to the students, the secundary experimental classes and the class council, between 1954 and 1981. The time frame chosen is limitaded by the presence of Gacriema Pacheco as Director, from 1954 to 1981, which concentraded efforts to maintenance a kind of school that students were chosen by selection and intelligence tests. Registered in the field of History Education and it's interface with History of educational institutions, the research is anchored in principals of Cultural History and uses as methodology Oral History and Historical Documental Analysis. By this mean, it has memories narrativesof five teachers who performed at the school in the time in question, as well as documents located in Arquivo da Comissão de Ensino do CAp and Arquivo Faculdade de Educação/UFRGS. To better understand CAp, it was necessary to get to know the brazilian educational legislation, as well as foreigns inspirations associated to the New School rules. Should be noted that "escolanovismo", based on thoughts of north americand and europeans theorical, were at the heart of the idealization of a new concept of school, which culminated on the installation of brazilians Colégios de Aplicação, from 1940. Those stablishments principles of teaching were to make as labarotory schools and also as internship fiel for the students of Degree course on Philosophy Colleges at the country. Under this umbrella, in 1954, it started the first class of CAp/UFRGS. For the directors, Graciema Pacheco e Isolda Holmer Paes, the interns were the mainspring of inovation and irradiation of unused educational practices to other schools, either public or private ones. During the research, it was possible to stablish relations between the way CAp used to appropriated foreign educational trends and looked to disseminate them. Notedly, the renew frech speeches made emerge in the context of Colégio de Aplicação a determinated ideal of model school to the porto-alegrense society at the time studied. The practices developed tell about roundness cultural that added french and brazilians educators, who shared studies ecxhange. Tose approches allowed the school to promote a pedagogical vanguard that was translaed in school actions, so far, little know, between ehwm and the Experimental Classes and Class Council. This study wished to contribute in the production of knowledge in Educational History, in way to provide visibility to pedagogicals experiences, which incorporated a way of thinking the educacional made. Other than that, it was aimed to understand a teachins instituition and its culture, of which, in a big part, we are heirs.

The number of students in colleges and universities is growing, as well as number of universities and the education institutes are trying to be successful despite poor market conditions and get as many students as possible. Good marketing communications is a tool for universities to create a competitive advantage in the market and thus contributes to strengthening the financial situation of colleges and universities, regardless of its legal form. The thesis contains an analysis of the university market in the Czech Republic regarding the marketing point of view and type of financing particular universities. The thesis analyses the perception research of marketing communication performed by universities to appeal to their largest demographics high school students.

A relação entre os sistemas de gestão por indicadores e o desempenho das instituições de ensino superior / The relationship between management systems by indicators and the performance of high education institutions

Esta pesquisa analisa a influência dos indicadores no desempenho das Instituições de Ensino Superior. Para isso, foi realizado uma pesquisa em duas etapas. Na primeira, identificou-se na literatura um conjunto de indicadores e dimensões que foram submetidos a onze especialistas em ensino e gestão de desempenho. Desta etapa resultou um dashboard composto por nove dimensões e 67 indicadores. Em uma segunda etapa, foi realizado um survey com 109 instituições de ensino, utilizando estes indicadores. Como resultados, todos os especialistas ressaltaram a importância da gestão de desempenho para o atingimento dos resultados e objetivos estratégicos, assim como as principais relações de causa e efeito. A partir do survey realizado, o estudo apresenta, por meio dos testes qui-quadrado, de regressão logística múltipla e de análise de correspondência múltipla associações entre o IGC da instituição e a presença, a importância e a forma como os gestores usam os indicadores. Analisando conjuntamente a presença, a importância e o uso dos indicadores na tomada de decisão, percebe-se que apenas dois indicadores - vínculo a programas internacionais (em sua unidade ou fora dela) e alunos que fazem mais de um curso (fidelização) - mostraram-se associados ao IGC em todas as análises estatísticas. Analisado as dimensões, apenas \"Acadêmico\", \"Sociedade/extensão\" e \"Financeiro\" não se mostraram associadas ao IGC em pelo menos uma análise. As dimensões \"Internacionalização e Pesquisa\", \"Aluno/Cliente\" e \"Mercado\" foram as dimensões que se apresentaram mais associadas ao IGC, o que ocorreu em no mínimo 50% dos testes realizados. Do ponto de vista gerencial, esta pesquisa apresenta um dashboard de gestão para instituições de ensino superior. Destaca-se a apresentação de indicadores e dimensões para se gerenciar uma instituição de ensino e a forma como esses indicadores e dimensões estão associados ao IGC. / The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of performance indicators on the performance of High Education Institutions. For this, the research\'s been organized in two different stages. For the first stage, a set of indicators and dimensions were identified in the literature which were submitted to eleven specialists in teaching and performance evaluation. As result, this stage led to a dashboard composed of nine dimensions and 67 indicators. In the second stage, a survey was carried out with 109 educational institutions, using the 67 indicators. In the result, all experts emphasized the importance of performance management to achieve strategic results and goals, as well as the main relationships of cause and effect. From the survey conducted, the study presents, through chi-square tests, multiple logistic regression and multiple-correspondence analysis, the associations between the IGC of the institution and the presence, importance and the way managers use the indicators. By analyzing the presence, importance and use of the indicators in a whole, in the decision-making process, what can be noted is that only two indicators - international programs links (same institutions or partnership) and students enrolled to more than one course (loyalty) were associated to IGC in all statistical analyzes. Analyzing the dimensions, only \"Academic\", \"Society / extension\" and \"Financial\" were not shown to be associated with the IGC in at least one analysis. The dimensions \"Internationalization and Research\", \"Student / Customer\" and \"Market\" were the most associated dimensions with the IGC, which occurred in at least 50% of the performed tests. From an administrative point of view, this research presents a management dashboard for high education institutions. It is worth to highlight the presentation and dimensions of indicators to manage an educational institution and the way these indicators and dimensions are associated with the IGC.
